The handyman lover of a married Queens mom claimed he killed her because he thought she had given him HIV during their two year affair and tossed her laptop into the Hudson river because it had explicit videos.

David Bonola, 44, of Queens, was arraigned on Tuesday on a 13-count indictment for the April 16 murder of Orsolya Gaal, 51, who was stabbed 58 times in her basement and stuffing the body in a duffle bag while her son was upstairs .

According to the court documents, when detectives questions him on April 20, Bonoal allegedly claimed Gaal was cheating on him and that, ‘She gave me HIV,’ the New York Post reported.

‘She lied to me, she used me. She told me that she loved me. She couldn’t be with one person.

‘I took her laptop because she had sex videos on the laptop,’ he added. ‘I threw her laptop in the Hudson River where I used to visit her.’

Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise charged Bonola with two counts of murder in the second degree, two counts of burglary in the first degree, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

If convicted, the handyman faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison.

Prosecutors said Gaal had returned to her home in Forest Hills on April 16, at around 12:30 am, when Bonola went into the house just a few minutes later.

Bonola, who had worked as Gaal’s handyman for the last two years and had an affair with the mother of two, got into an argument with her and went on to slash her throat while they were in the basement, according to the charges.

NYPD officials said Bonola had gone over to the home in an attempt to resurrect the affair as the relationship had come to ‘the end’.

According to the statements from the April 20 interrogation, Bonola also confronted Gaal about the HIV claim.

‘I told her that I just wanted her to tell me the truth about why she gave me HIV,’ Bonola told police. ‘She said she didn’t have HIV.’

When Gaal told him the affair was over, he said she grabbed a knife and ordered him to leave, but Bonola told the police he refused.

‘I grabbed the knife and cut her from the neck,’ Bonola allegedly told the police. ‘She kept fighting and we fall. She was moving and trying to grab me so I stabbed her in the neck to get her to stop attacking me.’

Prosecutors said he went on to stab her 58 times before grabbing one of her son’s hockey duffle bags and stuffing her body inside. Gaal’s 13-year-old son, Leo, was asleep upstairs when the murder allegedly took place.

Her husband, Howard Klein, and oldest son, Jamie, were out of town looking at colleges.

Prosecutors said police were able to trail the blood from the duffle bag to Gaal’s home, where the found the knife hidden in the house as well as Bonola’s jacket.

After he was arrested and questioned, Bonola allegedly admitted to police that he stabbed Gaal and moved her body, according to court records.

He also admitted to going to the hospital for a deep cuts he suffered on his hands.

In a statement following the indictment, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said: ‘This heinous murder left two teenagers without a mother and terrified an entire community.

‘As alleged, this defendant brutally stabbed the victim over 50 times before stuffing her body into a duffel bag – which he then dragged for several blocks in an attempt to dispose of the victim’s remains.

‘The defendant has now been indicted and arraigned on very serious charges and faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.’

The criminal complaint charging Bonola cites both surveillance video footage and his own ‘statements and admissions’ as evidence in the case against him.

Bonola, who hails from Mexico and had moved to the US more than 20 years ago, was arrested on Thursday.

Police sources who spoke with the New York Post say he spilled his guts in an entirely ‘matter of fact’ manner – and then proceeded to eat a bagel with cream cheese as if nothing had happened.

‘It was very matter of fact, very thorough, he answered every question they had,’ a police source told the newspaper. At no point did he request a lawyer.

Then, as he was put in a police car on Thursday in front of journalists asking why he killed her, he screamed: ‘F**k you motherf****r!’

Bonola and the victim first started seeing each other in 2020 after he worked in the family home where Gaal lived with her 53-year-old husband and two sons. It was an on-off relationship which they rekindled in April, but which had recently ended again.

According to NYPD sources, Bonola had gone over to the home in an attempt to resurrect the affair after it had come to ‘the end’.

‘A heated argument ensues between the two in the basement. A knife is brandished. A violent struggle ensues, resulting in our victim being stabbed ruthlessly and brutally in excess of 55 times, causing her demise,’ NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig explained.

He then retrieved her son’s hockey bag and waited until 4am, then wheeled her body out of the home and dumped it less than half a mile away. He also sent a text to Klein, Gaal’s husband, claiming to have been someone she once sent to jail in a failed attempt to throw police off his scent.

‘What’s the sense of this? I don’t know the reason why he did it. She’s gone,’ Richie, a worker at 7-11 told Fox News. ‘What did he accomplish?’

A local florist, Martin Calixto, said that Bonola would often stop by and buy a single red rose each and every time. He even recognized Gaal from photos that Bonola had showed him in the past.

‘He was very in love with her. He was talking about her as a very nice girl, very respectful. It’s hard to believe. He was a nice guy, dammit. For me it’s hard to believe,’ he went on.

A pedestrian was killed after a SamTrans bus struck a 63-year-old man at the South San Francisco BART Station Monday night, a SamTrans spokesperson confirmed.

At approximately 7:59 pm on Monday, a pedestrian was struck by a northbound Route 130 bus, resulting in his death, SamTrans said. Emergency personnel, including the transit police, SamTrans management staff, and the coroner, responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and the man was identified as being from San Francisco.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office did not release the name of the man killed, and SamTrans did not have any additional information. The South San Francisco station is located at 1333 Mission Road.

In December 2019, a 70-year-old woman was struck and killed by a SamTrans bus near the Caltrain station in downtown Redwood City at the intersection of James Avenue and El Camino Real.

Helping people was important to Jason Murphy and he was doing just that — working as a handyman — when he was killed last week in St. Paul.

On Monday police identified the two men fatally stabbed in a Payne-Phalen residence on Thursday as Murphy, 40, and Jon R. Wentz, 56.

The parents of Murphy said Monday they have many questions about what happened and the biggest is why the suspect was allowed to live in a sober-living house.

“It’s very senseless, very unfortunate and very sad,” Marsha Murphy said.

The Ramsey County attorney’s office charged Joseph Francis Sandoval II, 32, on Friday with two counts of second-degree murder. He had just moved into the residence at the 1100 block of Lawson Avenue. Last year, he was civilly committed for being mentally ill and chemically dependent. He had several pending charges, including for first-degree assault.

Murphy was doing work in the home and Wentz was a resident, according to the criminal complaint against Sandoval. Police said they were both St. Paul residents.

Sandoval told police that he sat down on the couch in the home and the “TV kept saying ‘take your opportunity,’ so I took my opportunity.” When an investigator asked Sandoval what he meant, he said, “The TV said they’re going to kill me.”

Sandoval made his first court appearance in the case on Monday and a judge ordered an evaluation about his competency to proceed with the court case.

Murphy was a caring, quiet man, and the father of a 15-year-old, said his parents, Bob and Marsha Murphy.

“It really meant a lot to him to help, especially the less fortunate, because he’s had some hard times in life,” Marsha Murphy said.

Jason Murphy especially enjoyed woodworking and made “beautiful furniture” that was inlaid with different types of wood, his mother said. He previously worked for a bathtub repair and refinishing company that his parents used to own.

“He did the actual work and he was very, very good at it — very particular about how he did things,” Marsha Murphy said. “He liked things to be done well and that followed into when he started to make things out of wood.”

Friends and coworkers are raising money on behalf of the family of a west county stabbing victim to pay for the transportation of his body to Mexico.

Francisco Marcelo Olivera Arellanes was killed on March 23 at a home in the Guerneville area on Old Cazadero Road. His friends and relatives have launched a fundraiser on gofundme.com to benefit his family.

Loved ones want funeral services and burial to take place in Mexico where his mother and two children live.

The 31-year-old was a handyman and gardener for River to Coast Children’s Services, a Guerneville-based organization serving west Sonoma County child care providers, families and communities.

He’d worked there for years and was popular among staff, said Diana Avila, child development program director.

“He was a hard worker,” she said. “He had this contagious laugh, which was super bubbly.”

Around 9 pm March 23, Sonoma County dispatchers received reports that a vehicle had been driven into a home and that someone inside the home was dead.

Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies performed CPR on Olivera Arellanes, who was the person inside the home. He’d been stabbed at least once, officials said, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Investigators say Guerneville resident Drake Myhre, 24, attacked him, then fled and later stabbed another person 7 miles away on River Drive near Forestville. That person survived.

Authorities found Myhre’s body on rocky ground below the Highway 116 bridge over the Russian River in Guerneville. His death is considered an “apparent suicide,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Friends of Myhre’s, contacted by The Press Democrat, declined to comment.

Investigators say Myhre and the second victim knew each other but they haven’t identified a connection to Olivera Arellanes.

According to his colleagues, Olivera Arellanes worked around the Guerneville area with his brother, Rey. They were known as the “dynamic duo,” Avila said.

In the gofundme.com profile, organizers wrote that, “He wanted to be like his big brother and they share a unique relationship like no other. They had big plans for their future, for their families and for the community surrounding them.”

Olivera Arellanes often played soccer at the Guerneville Elementary school and was known for his willingness to help others under any and all circumstances.

QUEENS, NY– The suspect in the murder of a New York mother of two whose body was found in a duffel bag made his first court appearance late Thursday night, and more details of the grisly crime emerged.

And while 44-year-old David Bonola is being prosecuted for murder, federal immigration authorities are looking into whether he entered the country illegally from his native Mexico 21 years ago and have filed a detainee with the court.

“ICE focuses its civil immigration enforcement priorities on the apprehension and removal of noncitizens who pose a threat to our national security, public safety, and border security,” an ICE spokesperson said.

Prosecutors say the victim, 51-year-old Orsoyla Gaal, let Bonola inside her Forest Hills home in Queens and that the two had an on-again, off-again affair over the past two years.

The prosecution submitted a transcript of Bonola’s taped statement made to police, during which they say he confessed.

Gaal let him in “because she knew him,” but he overstayed his welcome, a prosecutor said, stating that Gaal asked Bonola to “leave multiple times” before he stabbed her nearly 60 times.

“The defendant and victim were known to each other,” assistant district attorney Josh Garland said. “Because she knew him, she let him into the house. He then engaged her in a verbal dispute and unfortunately she had to ask him to leave multiple times.”

Prosecutors also revealed Bonola allegedly slashed Gaal’s throat before stuffing her body in a hockey bag and dragging it and dumping it at the end of a long trail of blood that led back to Gaal’s home.

“Two boys are left without a mother and a young teenager faces the added trauma of being home when this heinous murder took place,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. “As alleged, the defendant stabbed the victim over 50 times and then attempted to dispose of the body by stuffing it into a duffel bag and dragging it across a quiet residential neighborhood, leaving a trail of blood and a terrified community. The defendant is now in custody and will be held to account for this horrific crime.”

During the investigation, police recovered a bloody jacket and blood-stained tissues from inside Forest Park.

On Wednesday, the defendant offered to speak to police and, during questioning, made incriminating statements, police said.

Bonola allegedly revealed that some time on Saturday he went to a New York City hospital for a cut on his hand. He also told police he and the victim argued, he allegedly confessed to stabbing her and moving her body, according to prosecutors.

“Based upon information provided by persons known to the New York City Police Department and the Queens County District Attorney’s office, recovered video surveillance, and statements and admissions made by the defendant, David Bonola, that, at the above-mentioned date, time, and place of occurrence, the defendant did stab the victim, Orsolya Gaal, numerous times with a knife, thereby causing her death, after which he placed her body in a duffle bag and moved it to the sidewalk at another location,” the criminal complaint said.

Bonola was ordered held without bail on second-degree murder charges and, at the request of defense attorney David Strahan, was placed on suicide watch.

Bonola is due back in court next week. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

A San Francisco public school educator was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday while walking in Cow Hollow, steps from the school where he taught, officials said.

Andrew Zieman, 30, was a paraeducator at Sherman Elementary School and the community is mourning the tragic loss.

“Andrew was a long-time staff member at our school and attended Sherman himself as an elementary student,” the school’s principal, Helen Parker, wrote in a letter sent to families and posted by KRON. “We are struggling to understand this tragic loss of life, especially since he meant so much to so many students, families, and staff. Andrew taught from the heart. He was patient and kind, and always a positive role model. I am sure you will join me in offering our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

“Death never really hit me as hard,” Zieman’s cousin, Kevin Cabacungan, shared in a social media post. “He was a good, kind soul and I cannot believe it. We talked about nostalgia and movies almost all the time. We had dreams & ideas He went for his and was in a great place last I talked to him.

Zieman attended Sherman Elementary School as a child, KTVU reported.

The collision, which involved a pedestrian and two vehicles, was reported at around 7:55 am, minutes after school started, near the corner of Franklin and Union streets, the San Francisco Police Department said.

Despite live-saving measures by paramedics, Zieman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Police are investigating what caused the collision.

The incident marks the city’s 12th pedestrian death in a traffic collision this year, Walk SF, an organization dedicated to making SF’s streets safer, said

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends,” Walk SF Executive Director Jodie Medeiros said in a statement on Wednesday. “Too many people are paying the ultimate price for unsafe streets.”

Although Franklin Street is not considered to be part of the city’s “high-injury network” — 13% of city streets where 75% of its crashes occur — the three-lane one-way street is a major thoroughfare and drivers tend to speed as they head north and down a steep hill, Walk SF said.

Since her death nearly three years ago, what would have been Elizabeth Wiesenfeld’s first grandson was born and her first granddaughter is set to arrive soon.

But Betsy, as she was known to her family, never had the chance to meet them. Instead, she was killed and taken from her Whitehall home and left in a wooded area of ​​Plum, where she was found nearly a year later.

“I feel that my sister was just beginning a new chapter in her life, one that would be full of joy and satisfaction as she was a person with a great reservoir of love in her heart, and the role of grandmother would have been that outlet , that fulfillment,” wrote her brother, Christopher Lagi, in a victim impact statement to Allegheny County Common Pleas Court. “She died on the verge of a great outpouring of love.”

On Monday, the man who killed Wiesenfeld, 67, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and related counts before Common Pleas Judge Alexander P. Bicket.

As part of a plea agreement in the case, Douglas Berry, 50, of McKeesport, will serve 17 to 40 years in state prison.

He apologized to the victim’s family.

“I want everyone to know how sorry I am for the mistakes I’ve made,” he said. “I’ve learned to pray for forgiveness. I apologize to the family for not doing more, and I apologize to Betsy. I can’t move mountains.”

Wiesenfeld went missing the morning of April 30, 2019.

Deputy District Attorney Kevin Chernosky said her daughter, Kathleen Graham, received a text message at 11:11 am that day from her mother’s cellphone, saying that she had met someone and was leaving town.

Graham felt that was out of the ordinary and went to her mother’s home on East Barlind Drive and called the Whitehall police. Inside, they found signs of a struggle, including furniture out of place and apparent blood stains on the bedding.

Wiesenfeld’s home security system showed her front door had opened at 8:40 am, and her garage door opened at 8:55 am Later, surveillance footage from homes in the neighborhood showed a truck similar to one Berry drove pulling into her driveway. License plate reading cameras showed that same truck driving along Route 51 earlier that morning.

Chernosky said a man wearing a distinctive hooded sweatshirt also was seen using Wiesenfeld’s debit card to withdraw $500 from an ATM. Later, that same card was found melted inside a beer can at Berry’s home, the prosecutor said. The card had prints from Berry’s thumb and index finger on it.

Berry, who had performed handyman work at Wiesenfeld’s home, quickly became a suspect. He was charged with illegally possessing a firearm on May 2, 2019, and has remained in custody since then.

He was charged with criminal homicide in September 2019, before Wiesenfeld’s body was found on April 19, 2020, by a Plum police officer patrolling an area known for illegal dumping.

Chernosky told the court that a plea agreement had long been considered by the victim’s family, particularly before her body had been found.

“We very much desired to find her,” he said.

Prior to sentencing, prosecutors submitted 15 letters to Bicket, all of them describing the impact that Wiesenfeld’s death has had on her family.

She was one of six siblings and worked as a nurse at an adult day care facility. When her mother became ill, she cared for her.

Wiesenfeld was known for her soft, sweet and caring personality.

She was married to a former Pittsburgh police officer, who died several years ago. They had one daughter.

Wiesenfeld made everyone feel loved, her family wrote. She was gracious and compassionate.

She also loved God.

“She always wanted everyone she met to know that they were loved by God,” Graham said. “She would joke that she was a preacher and would never stop preaching.”

Graham wrote that, as an only child, she and her mother were very close. She last saw her a few days before Wiesenfeld was killed.

“I remember dropping her off at her house, and it was raining,” Graham said. “She stood in the rain at her front door and waved to me goodbye until I couldn’t see her anymore.

“That was my mother’s love, she wasn’t bothered by the rain at all. And when I think of my mom, I picture that last moment, her smiling and waving goodbye.”

Wiesenfeld made delicious artichoke dip and sweet potato casserole, said her loved ones, and was known as the glue that held their large extended family together.

Beth Graham, Kathleen Graham’s mother-in-law, wrote in her letter to the court that their families joined together for holidays, birthdays and Sunday suppers.

Beth Graham said that at Wiesenfeld’s mother’s funeral, Wiesenfeld sang “Amazing Grace” during the service.

Every night, as Beth Graham now rocks her grandson to sleep, she sings that song.

“I tell him how his grandma Betsy would have loved him and sang to him, too,” she wrote. “It makes me sad to know that he will never get a warm hug or an I love you from her.

“But one day I will tell him what a great grandma she would have been and how much she would have loved him.”

On Wednesday, the defendant offered to speak to police and, during questioning, made incriminating statements, police said.

Bonola allegedly revealed that some time on Saturday he went to a New York City hospital for a cut on his hand. He also told police he and the victim argued, he allegedly confessed to stabbing her and moving her body, according to prosecutors.

“Based upon information provided by persons known to the New York City Police Department and the Queens County District Attorney’s office, recovered video surveillance, and statements and admissions made by the defendant, David Bonola, that, at the above-mentioned date, time, and place of occurrence, the defendant did stab the victim, Orsolya Gaal, numerous times with a knife, thereby causing her death, after which he placed her body in a duffle bag and moved it to the sidewalk at another location,” the criminal complaint said.

Bonola was ordered held without bail on second-degree murder charges and, at the request of defense attorney David Strahan, was placed on suicide watch.

Bonola is due back in court next week. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
