SANTA CLARA, California – San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw’s second NFL season is over.

After spending most of the 2021 season treating a nagging problem with his right knee, Kinlaw was seen by Dr. Neal ElAttrache is operating in Los Angeles, which will end his season early.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Kinlaw will soon land on the injured reserve in hopes the 24-year-old will finally be free from the knee problems that have plagued him.

Kinlaw’s 2021 season ends with eight tackles and a quarterback hit in four games. If the 49ers lose Kinlaw to injured reserve, they are expected to defend Kevin Givens from that list as he recovers from a high ankle sprain.

Aside from Kinlaw, the 49ers have many other problems on the defensive. You could do without Dee Ford (concussion) and Samson Ebukam (ankle) against the Chicago Bears on Sunday and have to do without the failed defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (calf). Posey, 34, was drawn during an 8-0 win over the Mets in the fifth inning Tuesday night after umpire Greg Gibson told Kapler that Posey was out.

Kapler said the seven-time all-star was moving well on Wednesday and planned to test his knee in a catcher squat during punch training. Curt Casali should start one way or the other with the catcher.

“It’s just good news at the moment,” said Kapler. “But obviously these things take turns and turns, so let’s keep an eye on it.”
