“I think the next is a knighthood!” Dick Van Dyke, 95, targets the Queen’s honor after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award

Dick Van Dyke has announced that he would like to be knighted.

Speaking at the 2021 Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony, which honored the 95-year-old Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor with a Lifetime Achievement Award, when asked what’s next, the movie star replied, “I think the next one is a knighthood. “

The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony was held in Washington, DC, in early May, and Dick was in high spirits as he walked the red carpet with his much younger wife, Arlene Silver.

According to Der Spiegel, Dick quickly raved about his lifetime achievement award.

He said: “The recognition from your colleagues is always the icing on the cake. How did I get a Kennedy Award? I never trained or did anything. I just enjoyed it. ‘

The Hollywood icon also joked, “I just turned 95 so I’m happy to be anywhere. Had I known I would live that long, I would have taken better care of myself. ‘

At this month’s ceremony, the film, television and Broadway star was joined by other cultural luminaries, including influential folk singer Joan Baez, actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, violin virtuoso Midori and country music superstar Garth Brooks.

The ceremony was originally scheduled for December 2020 but has been postponed to May due to the ongoing pandemic.

Dick, who told ABC News that the award was “the highlight of my career,” seemed overjoyed to be there with his fellow artists.

The Mary Poppins star sported an infectious smile with lots of laughter as he walked the red carpet in a classic black tuxedo.

Even though he moved on the cane, he still looked energetic and sported the shaggy white beard he has worn for the past few years.

Dick’s red carpet appearance comes after being seen handing out bundles of money to those in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Beloved Mary Poppins star, who played chimney sweep Bert in the 1964 classic alongside Julie Andrews, gave back to his ward when he ran errands in Malibu in March.

The actor stopped by the Malibu Community Labor Exchange on Civic Center Way, a nonprofit that helps people find day jobs in the area.

Dick left a small group of job seekers stunned after parking in front of the facility and handing out bills from his car window to people waiting in line for employment.

The generosity came when millions of Americans struggled to make ends meet after losing their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dick himself is believed to be at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19 due to his older age, but appeared unwavering and in high spirits as he helped those in need.

While accepting his latest Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center for Contribution to American Culture, he told The Mirror that he had another prestigious honor in his sights.

“I think the next one is an accolade,” said the beloved entertainer.

“I just turned 95 so I’m happy to be everywhere,” he joked at the ceremony at the Kennedy Center. “If I had known that I would live that long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

If Van Dyke were honored by the Queen, he would become one of many entertainment Americans to win Knighthoods, including Bob Hope and Steven Spielberg.

Recipients cannot refer to themselves as Sir or Dame, but can use the post-nominal letters KBE or DBE.

Van Dyke’s career began on the radio in the 1940s before moving to the Broadway stage, where he eventually won a Tony Award for Bye Bye Birdie in 1961.

He rose to more mainstream fame as the star of the sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show in the 1960s before moving to the big screen with roles in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

He then appeared in the 2018 sequel, Mary Poppins Returns, in which he portrayed the older banker’s son, whom he played under heavy makeup in the original film.

Last year he made a cameo on the Showtime comedy series Kidding with Jim Carrey.
