714 Steiner St., also known as the “Pink Painted Lady,” has been listed for sale for $3.6 million — the same price it was purchased for in January 2020.

Owner Leah Culver told SFGATE that unfortunately, it was “possibly the worst timing ever.” The pandemic hit the US just months later, which slowed down permitting and design plans. Then, supply chain issues followed while they searched for materials. Plus, with a booming housing market and so much economic uncertainty, the project has become much more expensive than she anticipated.

When Culver, a software engineer and angel investor, first spoke with SFGATE in February 2020, the house was in terrible shape. She estimated that renovating the interior would take about three years and $3 million. Now, she said she couldn’t even make a new estimation of how long it would have taken if she had kept at her quest.

“I had to just make the call,” she said. “I didn’t see an end in sight.”

Leah Culver looks at a drop ceiling in the front room of the Pink Painted Lady in 2020. The interior needs major renovations.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGate.com

Culver had dreamed of owning a Painted Lady, the homes most recently made famous by the 1990s sitcom “Full House” and its reboot “Fuller House,” for years prior to her purchase. She’d even toured the real “Full House” house on Broderick (which is definitely not for sale), and while she said she liked the interior, it ultimately wasn’t what she wanted.

She is listing the home for the same price she purchased it for since she said she’s made no improvements aside from some exploratory demolition. She has, though, had some plans approved by the city and she’s willing to hand over the architectural plans from David Armor Architecture to the next owner. Her construction plans are currently with the city’s building department and she said she hopes those will be approved this summer.

Leah Culver in front of the Pink Painted Lady in February 2020.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGate.com

Culver also made the announcement of the sale on her popular Instagram account @pinkpaintedlady, which had amassed nearly 19,000 followers. She said she’s happy to hand over the accounts to the new owners as well, though obviously wouldn’t expect anyone to take the public along on the journey like she did.

Mostly, she just hopes someone with as much passion as she had for renovating such a culturally important part of the city is the next buyer. “I’m looking for someone who really cares about this home and its significance to San Francisco,” Culver said. “I’m super sad about it. It’s not really what I wanted or expected.”

A home on one of San Francisco’s most recognizable blocks is back on the real estate market.

The Victorian-style home, one of the city’s “Painted Ladies” near Alamo Square Park, is listed for sale for $3,550,000.

The 2,500-square-foot 19th century home made headlines in early 2020 when a San Francisco software engineer bought the property with hopes of remodeling.

The home was built in the 1890s and has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and a two-car garage.

The current owner of the “Painted Pink Lady,” Leah Culver, documented her time in the home and the remodel via social media over the last two years.

The homeowner announced her intent to sell the property on Instagram on Friday.

“I’ve come to realize that I do not have enough time or resources to dedicate to truly restoring this home with the care and attention to detail that it deserves,” the Instagram post said.

That was my thought the first few hundred times I went to the Painted Ladies’ homes in Alamo Square. I felt a little pity – or at least as much pity as you can muster for someone who lives in a stunning house in San Francisco.

It seemed like some kind of dark magic curse: your house is on puzzles for sale at the San Francisco airport. Your home is on a Starbucks coffee mug. Your home will forever be the backdrop for a potluck picnic for the reruns of “Full House”. The line of people in newly purchased Alcatraz sweatshirts pointing cameras at the front of your home will never end.

But cynicism, it turns out, doesn’t live in the world’s most famous three-story Victorians.

George Horsfall, owner of the light blue Painted Lady with royal blue trim, does. He invited three Chronicle journalists on a tour. It was a lesson in San Francisco’s history, San Francisco’s pride, and the unexpected gifts of living in a city that attracts millions of tourists each year.

“I love meeting people and I’ve met people all over the world,” says Horsfall, listing his new friends, including a Bavarian SWAT policeman who hosted Horsfall at Oktoberfest in Germany and a Belgian family, who writes to him weekly. “You would really expect a miserable life if you didn’t like people and bought one of these houses. It’s a great icebreaker. When you meet someone in the park, everyone wants to talk to you. ”

Long-time San Francisco resident George Horsefall lives in one of the iconic Painted Ladies. That’s the way it is. Video: Ryce Stoughtenborough

65-year-old Horsfall bid on his Painted Lady in 1999 but passed out at the last minute and settled in another tourist epicenter: a rooftop apartment across the curvy block of Lombard Street. His mother, Catherine Sheehan Horsfall, bought the blue Painted Lady a few years later, and he inherited her when she died in January.

Horsefall and his mother had always enjoyed sharing the house with corporations or historians. But his point of view changed about 15 years ago, he says, when a lady in a car paid its tribute on the Bay Bridge outside Horsfall. At a time when his mother was sick, he was working too hard and needed the kind reminder.

“I drive across the bridge with tears on my face,” recalls Horsfall. “So what I did after that, when I ran into someone in the park, when someone came up to me and talked, I would invite them over and ask them if they knew what ‘prepay’ was.”

Since then, he has received more than 100 letters from his new friends explaining what they did to keep paying it. About two months ago, Horsfall took the next step, set up an Instagram account under the handle @bluepaintedladyhousetour and met in front of his house at 4pm most days and gave them a tour of the house. (He needs a mask and accepts $ 20 for the hour-long tour, mostly for some planned upgrades to the Painted Lady.)

As we walk through the house with Horsfall, two happy Golden Retrievers hit a back door near a more modern kitchen that immediately catches the eye; unlike the rest of the house, it has 21st century appliances. The house itself is breathtaking everywhere. Much of the interior is unchanged from its original design (although Horsfall confirms that the Painted Lady has WiFi). He’s added his own museum pieces, including San Francisco history and family history – Horsfall has relics from the city’s Panama-Pacific Exposition from 1915 and a slice of family wedding cake from 1885. There is a collection of more modern souvenirs he’s featuring in the front room his house of the Painted Lady on the front. His favorite: this Starbucks trophy in which a golden retriever stands in front of a painted lady.

However, the tour becomes really meditative when we are up on the top floor and look out of the small window directly under the pointed roof. There is a steady stream of tourists on the grass hill in front of the house. There is no sound to be heard against the thick redwood walls and the closed window; In the darkened room, the feeling is not exposed, but invisible.

“Can you believe how quiet it is when I look out the window?” Says Horsfall. “We can see the park and we can see everyone out there, but it never feels like someone is staring at you.”

There are always at least a handful of people staring at the house or taking pictures, chatting, taking selfies, then moving around, always being replaced by more.

And then, at a lovely moment, I realize that the world is a little less sardonic than I thought … and that we were goldfish all along.

One of the brightly colored Victorian San Francisco Victorian homes sold for $ 3.55 million, up $ 800,000 from the $ 2.75 million price tag.

The house at 714 Steiner Street features the popular architecture associated with the city, but the property’s real estate agent told Business Insider it was a “fixer-upper”. A full interior restoration is required.

The line of Painted Ladies Houses has become one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions thanks in part to her appearance on the sitcom “Full House,” which first aired in the late 1980s.

You can find more stories on the Business Insider homepage.

There are seven houses, including San Francisco’s iconic Painted Ladies range, and one of them sold for $ 3.55 million, $ 800,000 above the $ 2.75 million price tag, like SF Curbed’s Brock Keeling reported.

The house at 714 Steiner Street has all the elements of that typical San Francisco charm: the pointed roofs, the moldings, the ornate details, the opulent colors. The centuries-old house urgently needs a complete interior renovation.

The house’s listing agent, Jeremy Rushton of Coldwell Banker, told Business Insider that the property was a “fixer-upper”.

Photos show peeling paint, dusty windows, dirty walls, and discolored tile floors. The famous residence is likely to need updates to its plumbing and electrical systems and a complete remodel of its kitchen and bathrooms, Rushton said. The home’s ownership history is complicated, according to Rushton, and this was the first time it has landed on the market in decades.

The line of Painted Ladies along Alamo Square Park has become one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Its namesake originated in a 1978 book about the town’s distinctive architecture, and the site was popularized in part through its appearance on the sitcom “Full House”.

Painted ladies’ houses in the market are a rarity – only two have been listed in the past decade, Rushton said. In a city with a housing shortage and its status as an unofficial landmark of San Francisco, it was unsurprisingly enough to find a buyer despite the necessary renovations. And when we spoke to Rushton before it went on sale in early January, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if it sold above the asking price, and that’s exactly what happened.

Take a look inside one of the famous, colorful Painted Ladies houses.
