The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is coming back to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this summer after the 2021 edition was pushed back to October because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A limited number of “Eager Beaver” tickets went on sale Wednesday for the festival taking place between Aug. 5-7. General admission three-day tickets, starting at $359 apiece, and VIP three-day tickets, which went for $799, were quickly sold out.

Some three-day tickets remain for the most expensive package, Golden Gate Club in collaboration with Ken Fulk, which promises an “ultra-luxe festival experience” including fine dining and front stage viewing for a whopping $4,495 per person.

San Francisco Lands Top Spot In Clean Energy Rankings For First Time

San Francisco took top honors in ACEEE’s 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, followed by Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Minneapolis; and Boston and New York.

San Francisco took top honors for the first time in the sixth edition of the 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, followed by Seattle (#2), Washington, DC (#3), Minneapolis (#4), and Boston and New York (tied for #5). The annual American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) report ranks 100 major US cities on efforts including reducing energy waste in homes and buildings and moving toward a cleaner power grid—and doing so equitably. It identifies the leading cities, the most improved, and those with ample room for progress, citing opportunities for each to advance.

Cities earned credit for policies and programs such as requiring large buildings to reduce energy waste or subsidizing access to transit and other efficient transportation options for historically marginalized groups, and for their success in reducing their overall greenhouse gas emissions.

San Francisco launched a new program that provides free home energy-saving kits to residents in areas that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution and are economically disadvantaged. The city also updated its energy code for new residential and commercial buildings with requirements that will reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and it was the top scorer on transportation policies.

“I’m so proud of the all the work we’ve done in San Francisco to achieve the top City Clean Energy ranking this year,” said San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed. “Thanks to consistent investments in our city’s clean energy program, innovative policies to decarbonize our buildings, and advancing environmental solutions centered around equity, we’ve shown that it’s possible to drastically reduce our carbon emissions while growing our population and economy. I’m looking forward to our continued work with ACEEE and cities around the nation to continue striving toward bold climate action.”

Source: 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)

Making Moves In Transportation

This year was the first time ACEEE assessed cities’ progress toward their climate goals for the transportation sector—which are based on either greenhouse gas emissions or vehicle miles traveled—using a comprehensive review of their reported data. Twenty-five cities have adopted such goals, and only three are on track to achieve them. Seventeen of the 25 cities could not provide sufficient data to assess their progress. San Diego showed the strongest progress in this category, achieving a nearly 3% annual reduction in transportation greenhouse gas emissions since 2015.

The report also found that cities’ most recent clean energy policy actions have primarily focused on sectors other than transportation. Of the 177 new city clean energy actions scored in the report, only 23 were related to transportation, which is responsible for the largest share of US emissions.

“Most cities haven’t set a goal for reducing vehicle travel or transportation emissions, and of those that have, only a few show progress, so that points to a big area for improvement,” said Stefen Samarripas, local policy manager at ACEEE and lead author of the report. “From investments in transit to incentives for installing electric vehicle charging stations and zoning changes that allow dense, mixed-use development, cities have to use all their tools to support an affordable transportation system that works better for all while slashing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Additional Findings

The report, which evaluated cities from May 2, 2020, to July 1, 2021, also found:

Seattle’s advocacy in the state legislature allowed its municipal utility to expand its electric vehicle charging initiatives; Washington, DC earned points for incentivizing the purchase of new electric vehicles by waiving the excise taxes on them.

Madison (Wisconsin) (#39), Charlotte (#42), and Honolulu (#24) are this year’s most-improved cities. Madison increased its investments in renewable energy and adopted requirements to install electric vehicle chargers in all multifamily and some commercial buildings. Charlotte created a program to train energy efficiency and renewable energy workers and directed city agencies to purchase efficient vehicles. Honolulu adopted a new climate action plan.

Many cities dropping in rank fell by not keeping up with peers who have adopted leading clean energy practices, increasingly rewarded in the Scorecard’s metrics.

Many cities encountered funding, staffing, and operational challenges for their clean energy efforts because of the COVID-19 pandemic, though a small number adapted their operations and plans quickly and effectively. Overall, the pandemic slowed many cities’ actions through 2020, but efforts generally recovered in the first half of 2021 with a renewed focus on the buildings sector.

“COVID relief and infrastructure funds from Congress provide a big opportunity for all cities to step up their efforts,” said Samarripas. “Cities can invest in upgrading buildings to cut costly energy waste. They can invest in efficient transportation, including public transit, to help lower-income residents reduce their travel costs and protect the climate. The leading cities provide helpful models for those at much earlier stages of their efforts.”

The Scorecard ranks cities in five policy areas: community-wide initiatives, buildings policies, transportation policies, and local government operations.

For the first time, the Scorecard grouped cities into six types based on the population of their metropolitan areas and their rates of growth, allowing for an examination of trends across city types. The Scorecard also includes a new analysis and scoring of cities’ smart growth strategies and a new tool (developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory) to quantify the potential of a city’s transportation system to connect people to services and activities in an energy-efficient, convenient, and cost-effective way.

You can read the full report online, including individual fact sheets that describe each city’s performance and recommend ways to improve.

A man died after being rescued from the cold waters near San Francisco’s Lands End Thursday, fire departments said.

The San Francisco Fire Department said a passerby swam just before 3 p.m. to rescue a man struggling in the water near Eagle’s Point and called for help. Bystanders called 911 and the fire brigade and naval units responded with lifeboats and located the victim.

Paramedic lifeguards transported the victim from the rocky shoreline to a paramedic lifeboat and emergency care was provided, the department said

“Unfortunately, the victim was declared dead,” said the fire brigade. “It is not known how or why this person was in the water.”

The fire department didn’t specifically comment on the cause of death, but the ocean off San Francisco can be deadly, especially in winter when temperatures drop into the 1950s.

While winter is still around the corner, the buoy off San Francisco has recorded water temperatures of 54 degrees in the last few days.

“The water temperatures are currently in the mid-50s – that, together with the cooler air temperatures, can also accelerate hypothermia,” said a spokesman for the US Coast Guard.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – A large mixed-use project in South San Francisco that will include a new Safeway store is advancing the purchase of a select lot for development by a real estate company.

Steelwave, a seasoned developer acting through a subsidiary, has purchased a large lot at 180 El Camino Real in South San Francisco on which the project is to be built, according to documents filed with the San Mateo County Real Estate Agency.

The subsidiary paid $ 98 million for the package and bought the 14.5-acre site from Shamaim LLC, according to district documents filed on Dec. 28.

Newmark brokers Steven Golubchik, Nicholas Bicardo, Edmund Najera, Jonathan Schaefler and Darren Hollak arranged the real estate transaction, the commercial real estate company said.

“180 El Camino was one of the few remaining opportunities to grow in South San Francisco,” said Golubchik, a Newmark vice chairman and head of the real estate company’s Northern California Capital Markets Unit. Golubchik added that the property had received “robust” interest from potential buyers.

The Steelwave entity completed the property purchase through a cash deal, according to the county records.

According to the planning documents of South San Francisco, one of the heart of the project will be a new Safeway store.

“The revitalization of this property has been in the works for many years, but it’s worth the wait,” South San Francisco Mayor Mark Addiego said in a prepared announcement.

The new Safeway store will be approximately 63,700 square feet, city officials said.

An existing mall on the site, known over the years as the Spruce Shopping Center, located on the southeast corner of El Camino Real and Spruce Avenue, has stood vacant in recent years.

Steelwave is also planning several buildings consisting of offices and research sites on the site adjacent to the Safeway business location.

The office and research buildings are expected to have a total area of 750,000 square meters, according to a very tentative proposal submitted to the city council.

With the exception of the Safeway store, 19,500 square feet of retail space could potentially be part of the project.

Steelwave is coordinating the exact plans for the office and research space as well as the additional retail locations outside the Safeway store.

Construction of the new Safeway store is slated to begin this spring and be completed in the summer of 2023, officials from South San Francisco said.

The development area is within 2 miles of the San Bruno BART station.

Residents of South San Francisco have been waiting for the retail complex to be modernized for several years, but earlier proposals had not been implemented as an actual project.

“The new Safeway will anchor and stimulate positive improvements in the area and provide our residents with more shopping and dining options,” said Mayor Addiego.

Young Thug – the hip-hop star who tops the Billboard 200 with his new album “Punk” – will not take the stage at Outside Lands in San Francisco this year.

The highly influential rapper, who meanwhile has three number 1 albums on his account, was originally supposed to perform on the second day (Saturday, October 30th) at 5 p.m. on the festival’s big Lands End Stage. It was one of the highly anticipated sets of the three-day festival, which runs through October 31.

The organizers of the festival announced earlier today that the set would not take place.

“We are deeply disappointed that we have just been informed that Young Thug will not make his planned appearance at Outside Lands,” said a post on the festival’s Twitter account, @sfoutsidelands.

The organizers did not give a reason for the cancellation.

It’s a big loss as Young Thug is one of the most popular artists today. He just released the second full-length “Punk” on October 15th and it debuted at number 1 and is said to have moved around 90,000 album equivalents in the first week of release.

Fans will still get to hear some hip hop during this time window, however.

“We are happy to announce that Aminé has been added to the line-up and will perform at Lands End at 5 pm,” the tweet continued.

Amine – aka Adam Aminé Danie – is a definite up and coming star of the genre. A native of Portland, Oregon, who now lives in Los Angeles, is best known for the multi-platinum single “Caroline” from 2016, but he also has his two studio albums – “Good for You” from 2017 and “Limbo “From 2020 – reached Top 40 on Billboard 200.

– Outside Lands (@sfoutsidelands) October 30, 2021

It’s the second big cancellation at Outside Lands this weekend. On Friday, organizers announced that electronic music musician and YouTube star Marc Rebillet had to step down from the October 30 festival lineup due to an injury and will be replaced by singer, musician and comedian Reggie Watts. The set is at 7:10 p.m. on the Sutro stage.

Immediately behind the Lands End viewpoint, a flock of birds flying over the water directs Colleen Yerges gaze up and away from the dusty ground. The rocky surface is barren except for the riveted bases of two 19th century cannons that flanked the cliff until the late 19th century. If you have visited this area for the past 17 years you will find that something is missing here. Yerge definitely does.

Since 2004, the site has served as the canvas for one of San Francisco’s most notable, not-so-secret landmarks. A 10 meter high stone labyrinth by the artist Eduardo Aguilera has been attracting curious visitors to the lookout point since 2004. Yerge took over the management role around 2008 and has been tending the maze ever since, picking grapefruit-sized stones from the nearby Mile. rocky beach dragged up a windy path.

The labyrinth was deliberately destroyed in the past, especially in 2011 and 2015, but remained undisturbed for many years. The current chain of vandalism is different. Last year it was destroyed three times, with every single stone probably thrown into the water, as it is nowhere to be seen in the surrounding landscape. After two time-consuming renovations, Yerg’s efforts feel like a Sisyphus. She suspects that the labyrinth would suffer the same fate if she reconstructed it.

“Someone was paying attention and really didn’t want it here,” says Yerge.

Lands End’s Maze Caretaker Colleen Yerge stands at its former location.

Dan Gentile

Like so many San Franciscans, Yerge did not initially intend to live in the Bay Area for the long term. She planned to live here for a year after graduating from college but stayed another 26 years and lived in North Beach for more than two decades. She has worked as a doula, life coach, caretaker and baker (a few years ago she sold her company Mama’s Cookies). The maze is something of a haven for her, but she has taken a break from visiting the room and has been here for the first time in months.

“This has always been a place I like to come to at 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. when no one is around just to work on it,” says Yerge. “I don’t want it to be dramatic, but for me it’s symbolic of loss. I work out a lot of S — t in my head when I do this. It’s like my meditation. “

In Greek mythology, the labyrinth was a maze-like structure built by King Minos of Crete to contain the Minotaur, a monster that was part bull and part human. Labyrinths have been found in ancient cave art around the world and used in Cretan, Egyptian, and Italian architecture. They also often appear in Christian cathedrals. On site, you’ll find more mazes at Grace Cathedral, Bernal Heights Park, Potrero del Sol, Duboce Park, and McLaren Park.

The final remodeling of the Lands End Labyrinth.

Courtesy Colleen Yerge

Yerge estimates that Lands End’s maze is comprised of 300 rocks. She has received community support on several rebuilding efforts, but when she does the work alone the task takes about 24 hours because of the long walk from the beach. It is a labor of love, but it has one serious condition: the beach has a limited and dwindling number of stones.

So far, there has been no evidence of who is destroying the maze, and since the structure has not been officially approved by the National Park Service, the destruction is not technically considered a crime. Throwing 300 large rocks off a cliff seems like a tremendous effort for small vandals, so Yerge initially thought conservationists might be behind the destruction that was trying to restore the land to its natural state.

“I’m not mad at whoever does this. I’m more like, ‘What’s going on in you?’ ”She says.

As for the future of the maze, people turn to Yerge and keep offering to help rebuild it, but she is in no hurry. She could organize a meeting sometime in September but said she feels the country needs some time to revitalize and she feels like instinctively she knows when the time is right, one of the recreating San Francisco’s most popular works of art.

“For me, I see this as a gift to the community because of all the things it offers. … It offers something in ourselves. “

San Francisco-based Emma Berman, 12 years old, has always been a fan of Disney / Pixar films.

“My favorite Disney / Pixar movie is Inside Out. We’re so happy and extroverted that we spend a lot of time studying Joy, ”says Berman with a smile.

Berman has always been passionate about acting.

“I really enjoyed playing in school. I always wanted to be the main character, so my mom signed up for summer camp where I did the theater for “Annie” and when Annie was cast. “I have,” says Berman. That’s how I started. “

In late 2019, Berman’s agent auditioned for her new Disney / Pixar film Luka. She couldn’t get any more excited.

“‘Luka’ is a moving story about the friendship and summer adventures of Luka, Alberto and Julia,” explains Berman. “I noticed the character a lot because we are very passionate, determined and hardworking as well as very extroverted and stupid.”

Berman played this role three months after her first audition. As the story unfolds in the fictional Italian town of Portorosso, she had to prepare to master the Italian accent.

“There were certainly some challenges with this new accent, a new dialect,” recalls Berman.

Berman trained with acting coach Bettina Devin, but also found additional support from waiters who worked in his favorite Italian restaurant, Trattoria David Rio.

“I did a few zoom sessions where he taught me a little Italian,” reveals Berman. “He read me the whole menu with Italian pronunciation. It definitely helped. “

“His accent was like a very heavy Italian accent because he had just come from Italy,” adds restaurant owner Vittorio Durzo.

Playing Julia in “Luka” was an unforgettable experience. Therefore, Berman wants to work with Pixar again in the future.

“I really want to keep acting. I really want to work for a Pixar that does animation, ”says Berman. “I really want to know more about it.”
