A candidate running in November’s election for the board governing City College of San Francisco posted controversial views condemning critical race theory, often referred to as CRT, in a since-deleted tweet.

The revelation on Twitter of a prior comment by board trustee candidate Marie Hurabiell is now prompting a Democratic club in the city to reopen discussions on their endorsement for her, the club’s president told KQED.

In the tweet, which was published in May 2021, Hurabiell wrote, “CRT was a tactic used by Hitler and the KKK.” These were not her words; Rather, Hurabiell was amplifying the words of a speaker at a school board meeting in Loudoun County, Va.

A screenshot of a now-deleted tweet from board trustee candidate Marie Hurabiell published in May 2021. (Twitter)

Then, Hurabiell added, in her own words, “Gratitude to this strong and passionate parent for fighting this dangerous nonsense.”

Critical race theory is at an academic school of thought teaching how racism is baked into the systems and policies of the United States. It entered the national spotlight last year as a bogeyman of conservatives looking to lambaste local school boards. Striking critical race theory from school campuses is among a number of efforts by conservatives to reform school boards across the country over the past year, including banning books promoting racial equity and LGBTQ+ themes.

Outrage against CRT is usually reserved for screeds on ultraconservative websites like Breitbart, or on President Donald Trump’s social network, Truth Social. It’s certainly not an everyday talking point in liberal San Francisco.

The Virginia school board meeting took place amid heated rhetoric against critical race theory from then-gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin. After he won the race, Youngkin issued an executive order to end “inherently divisive concepts,” which he billed as a way to end critical race theory from being taught in K-12 schools.

Fanning flames against critical race theory was central to Republicans in his race, but in Democratic San Francisco, Hurabiell may have found a sympathetic ear for those views from people wishing to recall several local school board members.

In the deleted tweet, Hurabiell tagged numerous accounts, including an account of the San Francisco Board of Education recall called @recallsfboe that belongs to a group now called the SF Guardians. That group worked to successfully recall school board commissioners Gabriela López, Alison Collins and Faauuga Moliga.

“I think it was a really stupid thing that I said,” Hurabiell told KQED. “I think it was really stupid that I retweeted it and I’m extremely apologetic for that.”

Hurabiell said she believes systemic racism is a “real problem” in the country.

“In my life I have not spent a lot of time digging into CRT, but I’m trying to understand it better now,” she said. “I’m always open to being wrong.”

When asked if she usually calls things she doesn’t know about “dangerous nonsense,” she responded, “I don’t routinely talk about things that I’m not terribly familiar with.”

Hurabiell is an eighth-generation San Franciscan and has been an attorney since the 1990s. She also serves on the Georgetown University Board of Regents. An ardent supporter of the recall campaigns of the three San Francisco Board of Education members and District Attorney Chesa Boudin, she also is a member of the nonprofit Stop Crime SF, which was started by Board of Supervisors candidate Joel Engardio.

Adele Failes-Carpenter, political director for the City College of San Francisco faculty union, AFT Local 2121, said Hurabiell’s views are out of step with the college’s mission.

“We need public education to keep our commitment to ending racism at the center of our work,” she said. “Anyone who is participating in open, reactionary attacks on critical examinations of the history of race and racism in this country is not in a position to help us do that work.”

Hurabiell has been endorsed by at least two local Democratic clubs in their race so far this year: the Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club and the United Democratic Club. These endorsements can be especially key in political races that don’t have as much funding, like down-ballot college board races.

When reached by text, Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club President Bruce Agid said he was not aware of Hurabiell’s tweet about critical race theory, and that he would discuss her views with his club’s board. Bobak Esfandiari, president of the United Democratic Club, did not answer texts inquiring about the club’s endorsement of Hurabiell.

Failes-Carpenter said the clubs should reconsider their endorsements.

“I would ask them to stand by students and by public educators that have committed to fighting racism within our public institutions and within our educational institutions, by not endorsing and supporting candidates who are openly hostile to anti-racist analyzes and anti-racist teaching, ” she said.

The endorsement of Hurabiell by two Democratic clubs may be an odd choice for another reason: For two decades Hurabiell was a Republican. She was appointed to the Presidio Trust Board of Directors, where she served for three years, by former President Donald Trump in 2018.

Records from the San Francisco Department of Elections show she was a registered Republican in San Francisco from at least 2000, which is as far back as more easily accessible records could reveal. She changed her party preference to Democrat on Aug. 18, 2022 — six days after she filed paperwork to run for the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees.

San Francisco Democratic Party Chair Honey Mahogany said the organization’s bylaws do not specify how long someone needs to be registered as a Democrat before a Democratic club can endorse them. Furthermore, Democratic clubs are allowed to endorse someone of any party in nonpartisan races, like for City College’s Board of Trustees.

Hurabiell would have had an uphill battle running for office advertising herself as a Republican in San Francisco, where the party is widely disfavored in local elections.

San Francisco has no elected Republicans in office. The last Republican elected in San Francisco was the late James Fang, who formerly sat on the BART Board of Directors. He was first elected in 1990 and served until his defeat in 2014.

Hurabiell said she changed her party registration after joining a group called “No Labels,” and finding moderate Democrats who agreed with her on issues, but disliked her being known as a Republican Party member.

“We just wanted to solve problems. We just wanted to work together and effect positive change in our community,” she said.

The San Francisco Chronicle praised Hurabiell during her 2020 run for the college board — which she lost — endorsing her for “fiscal savvy.” Indeed, in her interview with KQED, she professed a desire to set City College on a fiscally solvent path, and expressed concern that too many classes that are still being offered are under-enrolled.

When Hurabiell said she didn’t know much about CRT, we asked whether she believed in other progressive causes that may be valued at City College, like the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I’m not sure I fully understand that movement,” she said, repeating her same explanation for having no stance on CRT. While the death of George Floyd left her “disgusted and devastated,” she said, “I want to say yes to that, but again I’m not sure I understand enough about it.”

Responding to Hurabiell’s repeated claims of not understanding both CRT and the Black Lives Matter movement, Jane Kim, state director of the California Working Families Party — who championed and won free City College tuition during her time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors — bristled.

“Listen, it is one thing for an individual in our society or to say that they don’t know a lot about critical race theory or Black Lives Matter, but if you are a candidate that is running to represent over 800,000 residents of San Francisco , many of whom are people of color, then I think that it is your job to understand those things,” Kim said. “If you don’t understand the Black community, the Latino community, API community, then you shouldn’t be running for office.”

Oakland, California, officials announced Thursday that Tony Batalla, who spent eight years as chief technology officer and innovation manager for the San Francisco Bay Area city of San Leandro, has been appointed as its new chief information officer.

Batalla, who will start in the new role May 2, will lead an IT agency with 85 employees and a $37.5 million annual budget. He had left San Leandro earlier this year for a four-month stint as CIO of Santa Cruz County, which sits south of Silicon Valley.

Tony Batalla (LinkedIn)

“Tony is an innovative IT executive who is passionate about public service,” Oakland City Manager Ed Reskin said in a press release. “His equity-driven focus on digital inclusion and expertise in expanding community access to government through technology – along with a keen focus on core system and infrastructure robustness and reliability – will be pivotal to Oakland’s efforts to enhance service delivery through digital innovation.”

Batalla joined the San Leandro government in 2014 as an IT manager, overseeing the development of a fiber optic master plan and a “smart city” agenda, which were adopted by that city in 2018. He also led a digital inclusion strategy in the 90,000- persons city, which installed free public Wi-Fi and distributed computing devices.

In 2019, Batalla got the additional title of CTO, putting him in charge of both the innovation and information technology divisions.

Oakland’s deputy CIO, Kevin Fong, has been leading IT efforts there on an interim basis since the resignation last June of Andrew Peterson, who left for a private-sector job in San Francisco. At the time, Oakland’s IT office had been working on expanding public internet access, upgrading the city’s digital services and increasing transparency of technology used by the city’s police department.

“I’m thrilled to join as CIO and build on the successes of the IT Department, focusing on collaboration, customer service, and innovation,” Batalla, who called himself an East Bay native, said in the press release.

Dear San Francisco: A High-Flying Love Story, opens Tuesday night at Club Fugazi (678 Green Street) and marks a new life for the venue that was home to Beach Blanket Babylon for 45 years. The new show was announced last year and in June we learned that there would be some sort of revue with acrobatics, choreography, spoken word, video projections, shadow plays and original music.

The show is designed as a love letter to the city and offers many moments, tableaus and spoken pieces that celebrate the history of the city or represent its peculiarities and charm. But by and large, this is a show that uses the loose framework of the city’s identity – with its historical earthquakes, fires, free love, poetry, drugs, tolerance, and technology – as the backdrop for some sometimes stunning stumps and kinetic dance sequences that Combine aerial work, juggling, pole work and acrobatics of various kinds. Think Cirque du Soleil, but with more words and less makeup, in an intimate setting with some hefty splashes of San Francisco’s pizzazz.

The opening number, which revolves around the earthquake and fire of 1906 and features an original song by composer Colin Gagne, is surprisingly moving – the entire ensemble moves both in tandem and in all directions, symbolizing a collective that survived the disaster and comes out of the other side.

The show is the creation of two women with San Francisco in their blood who have spent the last two decades building a circus troupe and style of performance with Montreal’s acclaimed group The 7 Fingers. Gypsy Snider, who was born in SF’s iconic Pickle Family Circus, is the co-artistic director of The 7 Fingers and co-creator of Dear San Francisco, while Shana Carroll is the daughter of longtime Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll and is also co- Artistic director and co-designer. Both are considered directors of the show.

The troupe who run the show includes two San Franciscans – acrobats Devin Henderson and Natasha Patterson, who are both Bay Area veterans and veterans of the local Cricus scene. But the rest of the cast is an international mix of talent from China, Australia, Canada and elsewhere in the US

Ruben Ingwersen (left) and Jérémi Levesque. | Photo credit: Kevin Bern

Impressive talents include Melvin Diggs, who came to the 7 Fingers through Circus Flora in St. Louis and Cirque du Soleil. As an amazing acrobat and graceful performer, Diggs does some incredible aerial stunts and also gives some formidable muscle support to his stage mates. The Australian Ruben Ingwersen and the Canadian Jeremi Levesque play a death-defying teaterboard number in the middle of the show, which vaguely addresses an earthquake. And Junru Wang’s talent at hand balancing is being saved for the penultimate act on the show – and the directors also created a poignant vignette that matches her talents.

Junru Wang | Photo: Kevin Bern

The kinetic pace and general thrust of Dear San Francisco is contagious, and after a brisk 90 minutes it’s hard not to want to stop. But the show is mind-blowing and is likely to appeal to a wide audience in the style of Stomp and the Cirque du Soleil franchise, while also playing the role of cultural cheerleaders and odists for the City by the Bay. Over time, the team intends to evolve and modify the show, much like Beach Blanket Babylon has done, to allow for repeated viewings over the years.

A quick foray satirizing SF’s recent tech boom falls a little flat – though it’s not without a laugh – and a sequence celebrating the poetry of the beat generation in North Beach, with short lines from Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Diane Di. Prima, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and among others the recently deceased Jack Hirschman is serious, but could perhaps do without the Beatnik berets.

Whatever you’re looking for from this show, you’re likely to be surprised, amazed, and a little out of breath like the seemingly tireless performers themselves.

Keep in mind that the food and beverage service hasn’t started yet – and it will likely only be available before and after each performance – cups and plates don’t really work in a room where the performers are often everywhere at the same time, riding a unicycle across the bar in front of you.

Dear San Francisco: A High-Flying Love Story runs at Club Fugazi for an indefinite period. Tickets are available for as little as 39 US dollars.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF / AP) – Even in the wacky world of real estate, San Francisco has a $ 475,000 voluntary buyout that was offered to a couple to move out of the apartment they’ve lived in for three decades Attention from social media and local residents attracted residents.

The voluntary purchase is considered the largest in the city’s history and reflects the high quality of the apartment.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Pediatricians in the Bay Area are preparing as the FDA considers approving a vaccine for children ages 5-11

The tenants, a couple in their 60s with teenage children, had recently paid $ 12,500 a month for a seven-bed, eight-bath apartment. It occupies most of a floor in a centuries-old building and offers expansive views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the nearby Presidio Park. They refused to be named.

San Francisco has one of the strongest tenant protections in the country, which encourages tenants to hold onto the apartments as market prices rise. While California recently introduced rental price caps and other tenant protection measures, San Francisco passed its rental price ordinance back in 1979 to alleviate the city’s housing crisis.

This means that landlords can only increase the rent for some properties by a certain amount each year, with the current increase being less than 1%. Landlords cannot terminate tenants without good cause, such as failure to pay rent. Owners who want to move into their own family home have to pay tenants for the evacuation. The maximum amount renters in a unit can receive for moving is $ 22,000, with an additional $ 5,000 for households with minor children or seniors 60 and over.

In this case there were no moving costs; The landlord and tenant have made a voluntary departure agreement.

Steven Adair MacDonald, the lawyer representing the couple, said the reaction was split to a six-figure buyout, which is enough to buy a home in most parts of the country.

“The landlord’s lawyers think it’s cheek and everyone on the tenant’s side is excited, they think it’s great,” he said. However, MacDonald believes the landlord will be the winner as they can rent the apartment for $ 25,000 a month and recoup the amount in just over three years.

“It’ll be a sauce after that, so it’s a great investment,” said MacDonald.

MacDonald is also suing landlord Friedman Properties on behalf of “fairly well-heeled” tenants in nine other units who moved out since March and can’t stand the constant noise and dust of ongoing renovations in the building.

CONTINUE READING: Body Clock Boost: Afternoon workouts can be a benefit to getting in shape, researchers say

Marty Friedman, listed as the Company’s authorized representative, did not respond to a call for comment.

KPIX asked the landlord’s attorney, David Wasserman, for an opinion on the buyout.

He stated that constructive clearance was never the landlord’s intention, noting that the landlord had several much-needed renovation and maintenance projects planned prior to the pandemic. These projects got complicated after the San Francisco pandemic led to the stay at home order.

The Financial Times was the first to report on the agreement.

In 2020, more than 300 rental purchases were submitted by tenants to the San Francisco Rent Board. The average takeovers are $ 50,000, according to MacDonald, and they’re increasing given the difference between market rent and tenant length of stay.

San Francisco rents fell during the pandemic but are still among the highest in the country. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $ 2,750, according to the Zumper rental platform. The average sales price for a home is $ 1.5 million, according to Redfin.

Tenant groups say that without the rent cap, poor and working-class residents would be evicted from San Francisco because they would not be able to keep up with market rents.

Charley Goss, who is in charge of government affairs for the San Francisco Apartment Association, said landlords accept that rent control is part of doing business in the city. But there are situations where wealthier tenants are clinging to a rent-controlled apartment, he said. The association represents around 4,500 landlords.

“Paying half a million dollars to a wealthy person who has a rent-pegged apartment in a city with housing shortages and an affordability crisis speaks to the way our local rent-cap is distorting the market,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Dick Tidrow, a former Major League pitcher and longtime front office member of the San Francisco Giants, has died. He was 74.

The Giants announced his death on Wednesday on behalf of the Tidrow family. He died unexpectedly on Saturday in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

“Our entire organization is heartbroken at the news of Dick’s death,” said Larry Baer, Giants president and CEO. “So much of our success over the past three decades is directly related to Dick’s contributions. We will all miss him very much and our thoughts are with Mari Jo and his entire family during this difficult time. “

Tidrow set up parts of 13 major league seasons for the Indians, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox and Mets. The 6-foot-4 right-handed man had a career record of 100-94 with a 3.68 ERA over 620 appearances with 138 starts.

Tidrow most recently served as senior advisor to the Giants to the president of the baseball business. He spent 28 seasons in half a dozen roles with the Giants after joining the franchise as a major league scout prior to the 1994 season.

The former pitcher’s leadership was vital during the Giants’ three World Series championship seasons in 2010, ’12 and ’14. The 2010 championship was the first for the franchise since moving west in 1958.

“Dick was a unique and special person whose influence and impact was legendary throughout the game, and whose fingerprints are all over our three World Series trophies,” said Brian Sabean, executive vice president and senior advisor for the Giants. “On a personal level, we have shared some incredible ups and downs and I am forever grateful for his 40 years of friendship and support.”

Before returning to his native San Francisco, Tidrow worked as a Special Assignment Scout for the Yankees from 1985 to 1993.

“Crushing! We lost another great baseball man!” Former Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen posted on Twitter. “The ‘ninja’ was so influential to all of us. His random moments when he showed up, maybe said a few words that might help you, a few words that you might not want to hear at the time. But he was ALWAYS HONEST! “

Tidrow was born in San Francisco on May 14, 1947. A retired Marine, he attended high school and college in Hayward, a suburb of East Bay, graduating from Mount Eden High in 1965 and Chabot Junior College two years later.

He leaves behind his wife Mari Jo, three children – Andy, Matt and Richelle – and a grandchild, Trista.

“Dick was truly one of a kind. He is loved and missed beyond measure and is irreplaceable in our hearts and lives,” said Mari Jo Tidrow.

Services were due.

Richard Hake, a WNYC host, reporter, and producer for 28 years, died Friday at his Manhattan home. He was 51 years old.

Goli Sheikholeslami, the executive director of WNYC, confirmed the death on Saturday. A cause of death was not yet known.

“For all of us on New York Public Radio and in the WNYC listening community, Richard was one of the first voices we heard every morning,” said Ms. Sheikholeslami, adding that he liked to say he “woke up in New York.”

Mr. Hake produced and created live radio feature segments for WNYC that focused on breaking news, culture and artistic sound portraits.

His work has also been featured on local and national NPR programs, including “Morning Edition,” which he hosted, “Weekend Edition,” “All Things Considered,” and “On the Media”.

Mr. Hake has received awards from the Associated Press Broadcasters Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and other organizations for his feature film and documentary work, including the Coney Island Cyclone Anniversary and The Perfume of the Bronx.

Karen Frillmann, editor and colleague of Mr. Hake at WNYC for nearly 20 years, said he was a “very local young man who brought his passions for New York to the WNYC newsroom”.

“He was unshakable as a broadcaster,” she said. “He really had an appetite for everything New York had to offer.”

Ms. Frillmann said Mr. Hake could deliver breaking news as it was still coming in, noting, “He had to fill up a little time and tap dancing and say the right things and not speak wrongly, live on the radio which is really a trick trick. “

“Richard was always calm,” she said, adding that he made the people sitting across from him feel, “OK, we’re just talking to each other.”

Ms. Frillmann recalled the 2003 power outage, in which 50 million people lost power, and said radio station staff worked with flashlights. “That’s hard to do,” she said. “And still be live on the radio and still be coherent.”

Richard Scott Hake was born in the Bronx on January 4, 1969, to Richard James Hake, a New York police officer, and Joy Mekeland, a clerk and secretary. His parents divorced in 1986 and his mother married IT consultant Joseph Colombo in 1994.

Mr. Hake graduated from Fordham University in 1991 and served on the Advisory Board for Masters of Arts in Public Media.

Chuck Singleton, the general manager of Fordham broadcaster WFUV-FM and former professor of Mr. Hake, remembered him in his early college years as driven, hungry, and fearless to step in front of a microphone.

“I worked with him on the newsroom, trained him on the newsroom, and also taught him the style of long-form audio production that NPR is known for,” he said, adding that Mr. Hake went straight to the radio.

Ms. Colombo described her son as a social person who also loved theater. In December 2011 he made his Broadway debut as Chimney Sweep in “Mary Poppins”.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Hake is survived by his father; his stepfather; his brothers Ryan and Jack; and a sister, Christine Hake.

Aimee Ortiz contributed to the coverage.

Upwork, a service for freelance workers to register on a digital marketplace, will be relocating its headquarters from Santa Clara to San Francisco.

Part of this is for convenience, reported the San Francisco Business Times. The new offices are more easily accessible to customers outside the bay and are located near a CalTrain stop.

However, a key component of the business is less floor space, according to the Business Times – the offices in San Francisco will be much smaller than the current offices, which will be sublet for the next 10 years to overcome the current rental situation. The new office is located in SoMa, 47 Brannan St.

In fact, CEO Hayden Brown told the Silicon Valley Business Journal that the move is part of an effort to normalize remote working after the pandemic – and not force people to come to the office every day.

“That will create a magnetic pull,” said Brown. “I don’t want other people to feel the pressure or that I try to create a kind of face-time culture myself by being there.”

Brown also said that much of Upwork’s 570 workers stayed in the bay during the pandemic. (Also note: she said her employees are paid by location.)
