New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day have been, for many generations, a way to see the old year out and welcome in the new year with confidence, courage and the hope that it will bring us joy and new opportunities. It is a time to shed pessimism and be optimistic about a new start.

Different cultures have different months and many different ways to celebrate the New Year.

The Native American’s welcomed the new year, but the fact that today our calendar unlike dictates the first day of January as New Year’s Day, the Indians used the winter solstice, the movement of the stars and the lunar cycles to determine the months of the year . Depending on the tribe, January is the Wolf Moon, Hard Moon, Snow Moon, or Moon of Strong Cold. The celebration could take at different times each year.

This from the Big Piney Examiner, December 30, 1915: An Old Indian’s New Year Greeting – That you may always have a tent and no sorrow as you travel. That you may always have a cache for your food and food for your cache. That you may never find a tree that will not give sap nor a field that will not grow grain. That your bees may not freeze in winter, that the honey may be thick and the comb break like snow in the teeth. That your heart may always be like the morning, and that you may come slowly to the Four Corners where men say, “Good Night.”

From The Indian Progress. Published Semi-Monthly by The Pupils of the Wind River US Indian Industrial School, Wind River, Wyoming, January 1, 1910.

Snow. More snow. Most snow. Happy New Year! Le Roi est mort; Vive le Roi! wanted– one good strong Chinook. Apply to any legal resident in the Rocky Mountain States.

It must have been a cold, snowy winter in 1910.

In Sheridan and Wyoming New Year’s Eve was a time for suppers, dances and masked balls.

The Sheridan Enterprise Dec. 30, 1919

It was common for many of the forts to have New Year’s balls. From the Cheyenne Leader Dec .21 1872 The chief of the Leader returns his thanks for an invitation to attend a grand bull to be given in the hall of Co. K, second cavalry at Fort Laramie on New Year’s Eve.

Old Bedlam at Fort Laramie

Not sure how well the menu would go over today, but this is from The Sheridan Post, January 4, 1894: SH Smith and Co., proprietors of the Bodega, spread an excellent lunch for their customers New Year’s Eve. It consisted of opossum and sweet potatoes, roast chicken, plum pudding, wines, beer, etc. Everything was served up in the best of style, and the friends and customers of the house enjoyed and appreciated the treat.

From an Unknown paper January 1, 1896 Probably the Enterprise

The Sheridan Inn figured prominently in the social life of Sheridan during the early days, and New Year’s Eve was no exception. This from The Sheridan Post December 27, 1910: New Year’s at the Inn – New Year’s dinner will be served at the Sheridan Inn, beginning at 5:30 pm To those who have been fortunate enough to be the guests of this famous hostelry on special occasions, the mere announcement is sufficient to inform them that the dinner will be the acme of the chef’s art. The service at the Inn is always perfect, and the best is none too good for its guests. After the dinner there will be dance, and delightful evening is assured.

And almost exactly 100 years ago, Dec. 28, 1922, from the Sheridan Daily enterprise, there is this letter notice. new year: Reservations are now being taken for the annual New Year dinner and dance at the Sheridan Inn. This affair is always one of the brilliant of the holidays.

A little bubbly is often consumed on New Year’s Eve

Private suppers were also held for various groups, like this on in 1907. From the Enterprise, Sheridan, January 4: Mrs. RC Bates tendered the Brotherhood of Trainmen a surprise on New Year’s Eve, in the form of a bountiful supper and card party . Neat invitations were printed and sent to quite a number of the Brotherhood. Supper was served from 7:30 until 9:30 after which cards were indulged in until midnight, when those present bade farewell to the old year and to their hostess, wishing her and each other a happy New Year

Prohibition was still the law of the land in 1919, but there is this clipping from The Sheridan Post December 31, 1919:

As mentioned at the start of the story, different cultures had different ways of celebrating the New Year.

This from The Enterprise, December 1907: The World Around: New Years is not the day in the United States as it is in some countries. The Pilgrims believed that its observance was a recognition of the Roman God, Janus, he of the two faces, the one looking back in retrospect and the other looking forward in hope and anticipation of the new year. Another image of the New Year is Father Time, falling and dying and his newborn personification rising. Both are nevertheless beautiful and expressive and worthy of perpetuity.

“Watch night” is probably the most distinctive feature of the coming of the new year. Religious services are held in almost every church and sometimes three or four sermons are preached. There are also many gatherings in clubs and homes “to watch the old year out” and they are occasions of much revelry and the repeating in humorous ways the superstitions believed in the olden times. Much of the social prestige of the day remains, such as calling and exchanging gifts, is due to the early Dutch settlers, who kept the old customs alive until the middle of the last century.

Sheridan Churches celebrated Watch Night as well. Sheridan Post, Dec. 28, 1899. A union Watch Night Service will be observed In the ME church next Sunday evening beginning at 8 pm There will be an excellent program prepared consisting of responsive services, solos, choruses, songs, papers and addresses, closing with consecration service Everybody is very cordially invited to come and join with us in saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming in the New Year.

The Chapel in the Park at Ucross

The article continues: In France it was the custom, until the time of Oliver Cromwell, of exchanging presents on New Year’s Day. But in the western world generally the practice has been absorbed by the Christmas festival. There is, however, a striking exception to this rule in France. New Year’s is the chief festival of the year, and the “gift” is the chief feature of the festival. It is believed that the French observance of the day combines the ancient customs of the Druids, Romans and Christians, New Year’s Day is everybody’s day.

Scotland. As in France, so in Scotland, New Year’s is the chief festival of the year. The eve of the day and the day itself are called “Daft Days,” or crazy days. And the eve separated from its “daft” associate is called “Hogmanay.” But what this means, no one seems to know.

The application of the term is in a custom of children to en-robe themselves in a street and go the rounds of houses on New Year’s Eve, knocking at the doors and crying “Hogmanay.” In response they always get an oat cake, rich with fruit, and sometimes, in addition, some cheese and goodies. This is their “Hogmanay.”

Housewives are kept busy days in advance preparing little cakes for their ghost-like visitors and it is regarded as something of a bad omen to run short and not be able to supply the demand.

England. Customs in England are very similar and in many interchangeable with those of Scotland. In parts of England the old year is “swept out” by men and boys whose black faces resemble (chimney) sweeps, and in other places it is “rung out” with muffled bells until the midnight hour, then allowing the clear notes to sound. A “hot pint” of the wassail drink at the midnight hour is still common. The front and back doors art opened at 12 o’clock to let the bad spirits out and the good spirits in while all the peacock feathers before this event are thrown out lest ill luck follow during the year.

The Far East. In Japan the New Year’s Day of the Gregorian calendar Is observed. It is a universal rule there and in China that all debts must be settled at the end of the year, but the feature of the day in Japan is in calling on friends and the giving of “awabi,” a kind of mussel shell, an emblem of times long ago when their forefathers were of necessity very frugal.

In China the people meet in the streets on New Year’s Day and salute each other “Kung-hi, Kung-hi” “I humbly wish you joy,” or “Sin-hi!” “May joy be yours.” The cities are decorated with lanterns and with red paper mottoes on their homes. When blue paper is seen it is a sign that there has been a death during the year.

A Chinese Dragon

The Chinese New Year celebrations are held over a 16-day period, and parades are also held in the streets to celebrate the New Year, and fireworks are enjoyed.

Many towns with a fairly large Chinese population have Chinese New Year Celebrations. San Francisco hosts one of the largest in the world. This year, the Year of the Rabbit in Chinese astrology, the Grand Parade will be held on Saturday, February 4.

Up until a few years ago, there was a Chinese New Year parade in Deadwood, SD. According to the South Dakota Magazine, there will be a celebration on Jan. 28, for grades K-6 at the Homestake Adams Research and Culture Center where students can learn about the Chinese culture.

happy New Year

On New Year’s Eve, 2022, celebrate the achievements of the old year, sweep out the disappointments, and bring in the New Year with optimism and hope for better things in 2023. Happy New Year everyone.

In California overall, prices dropped year-over-year, as sales collapsed, supply more than doubled. No dear, this isn’t just a seasonal dip.

By Wolf Richter for WOLF STREET.

San Francisco and Silicon Valley are now in the solid leadership role of the housing bust playing out in California with sales collapsing and prices heading south from the peak in April at an astonishing pace.

Just about everything that could come together came together. After a two-year outflux of workers due to working from anywhere, there came the collapse of the startup and crypto scenes, starting in 2021 and continuing unabated, leading to the early entries into my pantheon of Imploded Stocks. In early 2022 came the spike in mortgage rates. In mid-2022 came the downturn in employment at Big Tech. By that time, the Fed had been hiking its policy rates relentlessly, and Quantitative Tightening had kicked off. This was punctuated over the past two months by the chaotic dismantling of the workforce at Twitter and its ecosystem.

Local budgets have fallen into deep deficits – although most are still flush with cash from the pandemic funds received from the federal government and the state.

Vacant office space that is on the market for lease and sublease continues to balloon, while landlords have started to file for huge reductions in assessment values to lower their property taxes, which is going to cut revenues further.

This comes garnished by stories in the New York Times that Twitter stopped paying rent on its leased office spaces, and that it was instructed not to pay vendors. At least one of those unpaid vendors – a Silicon Valley company whose software Twitter had licensed – filed a lawsuit last week in the San Francisco Superior Court for nonpayment. It stated, “shortly after Musk’s purchase of Twitter closed, Twitter refused to pay the outstanding quarterly invoice, which was due on November 30, 2022, and Twitter disclaimed any obligation to pay any future invoices…”

These are all signs that the housing market is going to get a lot messier. Prices have plunged the most in San Francisco, followed by the Silicon Valley counties of San Mateo and Santa Clara.

In San Francisco.

The median price of single-family houses sold in November in San Francisco plunged by 11.4% from October to $1.50 million, and by 27% from the peak in April, according to the California Association of Realtors. A nasty-looking chart:

Condo prices plunged by 4.3% from the prior month to $1.15 million, and by 9.5% year-over-year. Since the peak in April, the median condo price is down by 15.5%. Condo sales in November have collapsed by 49%.

Seasonally, the lowest months are December and January. So that’s still to come.

But who is going to buy in the spring selling season? Prices normally rise as demand picks up in the spring; but who will be the exuberant tech workers that will want to overpay for a house by borrowing against the collapsed value of their stock options? Those lucky ones that still have jobs and stock options?

The housing markets in San Francisco and Silicon Valley are tied to the boom-and-bust cycles of the startup scene – now combined with the crypto scene and cryptos – and they’re tied to the stocks of startups and big tech and social media companies in the area, to the jobs that have to be done locally, and to the value of the stock options. All of them are puking.

Year-over-year, the median price of single-family houses in San Francisco plunged by 21%, the sixth month in a row of year-over-year declines. It was the biggest year-over-year plunge since the peak of Housing Bust 1:

Silicon Valley, San Mateo County.

The median price of single-family houses in San Mateo County, which forms the northern part of Silicon Valley, plunged by 6.2% from October to $1.78 million, and by 26% from the peak in April.

Year-over-year, the median house price plunged by 20%.

Silicon Valley, Santa Clara County.

Santa Clara County, which forms the southern part of Silicon Valley and includes the Bay Area’s largest city, San Jose, is lagging behind but is moving right along. The median price of single-family houses dropped by 1.5% in November from October to $1.60 million, and by 19% from the peak in April:

Year-over-year, the median house price dropped by 5.5%, the first significant year-over-year decline in this cycle. Prices had already undergone significant year-over-year declines in 2018 and 2019, and were on a downward path until the trillions in money-printing, the surge in the stock market, and the interest rate repression began to boost prices again.

Currently, Santa Clara County lags San Francisco and San Mateo by a few months, it seems.

In all of California.

Sales of single-family houses in California collapsed by 47.7% in November, compared to a year ago, the biggest decline since 1980, according to the California Association of Realtors. Condo sales collapsed by 46%.

Unsold inventory more than doubled year-over-year to a supply of 3.3 months, and days on the market also more than doubled – before sellers pulled the unsold homes off the market again.

For all of California, the median price of single-family houses plunged another 3.0% in November from October, which pushed the price down year-over-year (-0.6%). The median condo price fell 2.1% in November from October, which whittled down the year-over-year gain to just 2.7%.

Clackamas County Historical Society recovers 40% of potential revenue from event space.

Thanks to generous donations, a new HVAC system was installed at the Museum of the Oregon Territory on May 4th.

In early 2020, the Clackamas County Historical Society’s HVAC system on the third floor failed, making events impossible in the CCHS’s Tumwater Ballroom, which generated 40% of the historical society’s revenue. Fortunately, according to CCHS Marketing Director Waldo McGinnis, the Clackamas County community donated 27% of the total goal of $ 143,000, or just over $ 38,000, which CCHS used as a down payment to secure a loan to cover installation costs.

“The COVID-19 pandemic had already profoundly affected Tumwater’s operations; however, the paralyzed HVAC system ensured that the ballroom would not be able to host events at full capacity due to this critical system failure.” said McGinnis. “However, we are still happy about financial donations, as these contributions would help to relieve our reserves and ensure better financial stability for the institution.”

McGinnis said the historic society is “eternally grateful” to its supporters who helped make this HVAC installation a reality.

“We know last year was a particularly difficult one, and we appreciate your donations even more,” said McGinnis. “Please know that the Clackamas County Historical Society would not be here without your contributions. While the HVAC units are now installed, we are not out of the woods yet. ”

The CCHS loan is due by the end of the calendar year, so donations of all sizes continue to be accepted on clackamashistory.org for more information on the museum’s exhibits and services.

“The less money we have to pull from our reserves, the more exhibition updates and relevant programs we can make available to the community in the years to come,” said McGinnis.

On April 7, the Museum of the Oregon Territory returned to full operating hours, four days a week.

MOOT overlooks the Willamette Falls, which changed the region’s industry by powering mills and electricity, as shown by the exhibits in the museum. MOOT is home to petroglyphs and Native American artifacts, the original maps of Oregon City from 1850 and San Francisco from 1851, a piece of the Willamette meteorite, original items from 19th century immigrants to Clackamas County, and thousands of other objects, photographs, and documents representing the Reflecting the history and culture of Clackamas County.

Admission is $ 8 for adults, $ 5 for children ages 5-17, and $ 7 for seniors 65 and over. Veterans get free entry with ID.

NBA All-Star Game – The Trail Blazers Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons caused a sensation at Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta.

Lillard scored 32 points and took two half-pitch shots as he helped Team LeBron beat Team Durant 170-150 in the pseudo basketball game.

Lillard was the second top scorer in the game but didn’t make all 16 shots like MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo on the defense-frowning show.

Lillard during the half-field shots, one at the end of the first half and a second to win for Team LeBron:

“I didn’t do it in an actual game, but tested it in live action (now). Felt decent, fine. Like a regular jumper. I can shoot it pretty easily.”

Simons defeated rookies Obi Toppin of the Knicks and Cassius Stanley of the Pacers in the competition and made a name for himself by almost kissing the edge as he dived.

The competition was judged by five former dunk champions: Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Dee Brown, Jason Richardson, and Josh Smith.

“Having the chance to be a part of it and win is surreal,” said Simons.

College Baseball – After the state of Oregon beat BYU, it will face Oregon 10-1 in Corvallis this Friday through Sunday. The Beavers had excellent pitching, not allowing more than three runs in any one of 10 straight wins. Team ERA is 1.64 and their opponents beat .172.

Oregon (6-2) won four games at UC Santa Barbara last weekend, the first four-game race by a high-ranking opponent in program history. The ducks defeated UCSB 38-16 and fought .302 with 14 extra base hits in the sweep.

Portland played one of three games outside the Gonzaga conference and was 3-6 over the weekend in a March 9 game in Washington and a four-game home game against Utah Valley.

College Cross Country – The University of Portland’s men’s and women’s teams and the Oregon State women’s team will compete in the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Monday, March 15 (TV live at 9:30 a.m.) ESPNU).

The pilot men are 17th. UP women 20 are led by WCC Champion Anna Pataki. The OSU women finished fourth in the program at the Pac-12 Championships on March 5 and are being referred to nationals for the second time in program history.

Individually, Oregon Redshirt Senior (Sheldon High) will have his third individual appearance at the NCAA championships.

Oregon’s focus is on the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, where the Duck men (12 entries) are # 1. The Duck women have eight entries in the indoor championship.

College Volleyball – Oregon made a dazzling comeback on March 7, beating seventh Washington in five straight sets. The huskies swept the first meeting last weekend and then did the first two sets on Sunday before the ducks recovered. Oregon (9-3) will play two games at Stanford next.

The State of Oregon (5-7) will host Washington State on March 12-14, after winning both games in California.

Portland State scored its first Big Sky win, defeating Montana in four straight sets on March 7th. The same teams should play on Monday.

College Men’s Football – The Portland Pilots will host Loyola Marymount on Sunday March 14 at 1:00 p.m. to claim their first WCC victory after losing 2-1 at Pacific on March 7.

Oregon State, 6-0, and 10th on United Soccer Coaches poll on March 2nd, face a big game on Saturday, March 13th at Stanford in 3rd place.

College Women’s Football – Two goals from Taryn Ries led Portland to a 2-0 win over Pacific on March 6. The pilots (2-2-0, 1-2-0 WCC) play in San Francisco on March 13th.

Oregon (2-3-1, 1-2 Pac-12) and Oregon State (2-4-0, 0-3-0) lost at UCLA and USC respectively last week, with the Beavers being UCLA No. 3 in overtime resulted in a 2-1 loss. Schools in Arizona visit the Willamette Valley for Friday and Sunday games.

College Softball – Oregon State is scheduled to visit Oregon for a non-conference game on Saturday March 13th. This is part of a weekend where the Beavers (8-5) and Ducks (13-1) host Nevada and Sacramento State. Oregon’s only defeat goes to UCLA No. 1, and the Ducks have a win over the Bruins.

Portland State is 1-8 en route to Seattle for games against Seattle U and Washington in 5th place.

ON COLLEGE HOOPS / VON PAUL DANZER / PORTLAND TRIBUNE / UP Hoopsters gain self-confidence and achieve two close victories

Terry Porter knew there would be many educational moments this basketball season for his Portland Pilots squad, which includes four freshmen and six freshman players.

Last week the pilots experienced the best way to learn: lessons in winning.

Portland (10-15, 4-8 West Coast Conference) prevailed in extra time against Pepperdine in extra time and Loyola Marymount in two late free throws. Sure, the victories went to the only teams among the pilots in the WCC rating. But such tense victories can leave a lasting impression.

“At the beginning of the year we had sales from our young people in late game situations that we didn’t do well. And we learned from that,” said Terry Porter after Saturday’s 68:66 win against LMU. “We did a much better job in all of these games by running the track at both ends of the floor.”

Examples of the growth in this profit have been the game-winning game. The newcomer Marcus Shaver Jr. was able to drive to the basket, pull a foul and knock down two free throws with 2.3 seconds on the clock. In Thursday’s win against Pepperdine, Shaver scored seven out of 14 points in extra time in Portland.

The razor and colleague JoJo Walker also took turns keeping LMU’s top scorer, James Batemon, six points below his season average.

Freshman striker Tahirou Diabate hit a game high of 19 against Pepperdine and scored a blocked key shot late in both games – a kind of momentum shifting game that Diabate has consistently started.

The Mali-born 6-9 Diabate who appeared as a high school player in Japan has started the last 10 games. It was included on the grid at the start of the conference schedule to provide rim protection and rebound.

“He stuck to his work and learned and was very receptive to what everyone had to say to him. He is an example of our growth as a team,” said senior wing D’Marques Tyson. “At the beginning of the season he would have been worried about where he should be and not worried about protecting the rim. He recognizes that now and takes on his role and is a solid rim protector.”

For his part, Tyson has taken on a role as the bench’s goalscorer. In Saturday’s game against LMU, he made 6 of 8 3-pointers and scored 22 points.

Terry Porter calls Tyson the pilot version of Vinnie “Microwave” Johnson, who set Porter’s Trail Blazer on fire in the 1990 NBA Finals.

The two narrow victories are an emotional upswing for a pilots team that doubled their overall WCC victory last season, 4-8 in the conference.

“We started to play more as a team. That’s how we achieved these two wins,” said Redshirt student Franklin Porter, who scored 12 points in both wins last week, including eight of the last 16 minutes against LMU. “It only builds trust for the whole team. If we go down this route, we have a schedule that we think is more favorable and we’re just trying to get a higher starting value for the conference tournament.”

The pilots who visit Damon Stoudamire’s Pacific Tigers on Thursday in San Francisco and on Saturday and then play three of their last four at home have a lot to learn.

“Our boys are growing. We are making progress,” said Terry Porter. “We still have a long way to go to find the right path. But it’s great to have momentum, great to get these guys involved in what we’re trying to do.”

‘Boo Boo’ boom

Portland wasn’t the only one getting great pieces from newbies on Saturday. Portland State’s Holland “Boo Boo” Woods led the Vikings to a much-needed win over Eastern Washington at Lewis & Clark.

Woods hit all 10 of his shots from the ground (a program record for most field goals without a miss) en route to 29 points. The point guard also had nine assists and no turnovers as the power supply ended up with 22 assists and six turnovers to stop a three-game skid.

Portland State manager Barret Peery describes Woods, who finished second in the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year last season, as wise beyond his years.

“He’s been great all year round with his ability to handle the ball for us for longer minutes,” said Peery. “When he shoots the ball like that, he’s really hard to protect because he can make you come and go.”

The month of January was full of comings and goings for the Vikings, who were understaffed for most of the month due to illness, injury and suspension. Top scorer Deontae North has missed three games and was suspended indefinitely earlier this week.

Woods and Bryce Canda are the only Vikings to have started all 10 Big Sky games, and Peery used five different starting fives in those 10 games.

By comparison, the Idaho team that hit the PSU a week ago have been using the same five starters all season, according to Peery.

“January was a turbulent, crazy month. We’re just hoping for a nice, smooth February and trying to keep things as normal as possible,” said Peery.

Senior striker Brandon Hollins returned to the starting line-up last weekend after suffering from pneumonia for a few weeks.

Hollins leads the conference in Field Goal Percentage (.588).

“He was a tremendous energetic guy to us,” said Peery. “He’s a rebounder, a defender and can hit the ball on the edge.”

Having too few players means adjusting the pressure on the field and the steady pace that Peery introduced this season. Despite some gunfights in the conference, the Vikings finished fourth in the nation that week (88.3 points per game).

The Vikings face a challenging week of games in the Montana schools.

The first is a Thursday visit to the Grizzlies, who are 11-0 in the conference game. Montana’s closest Big Sky game was a 92-89 win over PSU on January 13 in a highly competitive game at Lewis & Clark.

On Saturday afternoon, the Vikings will be shooting for a second win against Montana State, which starts the week half a game before the power supply in the conference standings.

• Jefferson High Grade Victor Sanders had 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds in Idaho’s 97-88 win over PSU last week. It was the last game in Portland for Sanders, who finished second in his career in Idaho. … Columbia Christian The senior Arkadiy Mkrtychyan, also senior, had 11 points and seven rebounds for Idaho.

Knighthood

The Warner Pacific men’s basketball team was named Team of the Week for the Cascade Collegiate Conference after winning last weekend against Northwest Christian and Corban.

The Knights, who have won five of their last six and ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Division II coaching poll, start an important weekend with second place in the CCC 12-4 against Eastern Oregon. The climbers visit Warner Pacific’s CC Perry Gym on Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday visit to the first place College of Idaho (15-1 and # 7 nationally).

Coach Jared Valentine points out that better defense is the key to the Knights’ recent success – and that “D” will be key to avenging losses to EOU and C of I.

“I’m starting to be a little pleased with our defense work,” says Valentine. “I don’t know we fully understood the defensive execution in the first half of the conference.”

One thing the knights know is rebounding. Senior De’Jon Bowman, a 6-6 year old from Las Vegas, won a school record of 24 boards (and scored 21 points) when he won at Northwest Christian. It averages 9.7 rebounds.

After this week, WPC will end the regular season with street games against Northwest and Evergreen State.

Second place is important as it provides the opportunity to play at home in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the conference tournament.

Valentine expects the CCC to include four teams in the national tournament. A second place would mean a higher rank and better seed for this competition.

In the neighborhood

• After disappointing losses in Idaho and east Washington, Portland State women return to Lewis & Clark to entertain Montana at 7pm on Thursday and Montana State at 1pm on Saturday. A season high of 31 sales condemned the Vikings in their seven-point loss in east Washington. With 5-5 (11-10 in total) the power supply is in eighth place in the Big Sky.

• The Portland Pilots women (5-18, 1-11 WCC) will be in San Francisco on Thursday at 7:00 pm and Pacific on Saturday at 2:00 pm.

• With four games remaining, the Lewis & Clark women are fourth of four playoff spots in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers (11-10 total) are 6-6 in the conference and one game in front of Puget Sound and Linfield. You will host Pacific Lutheran on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and visit Linfield on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The last two regular season games will be played at George Fox and the following weekend against Puget Sound.

• The men’s Concordia basketball team is still shooting its first victory at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, hosting Saint Martin’s on Thursday at 7:30 pm and Seattle Pacific on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Of the Cavaliers’ 14 GNAC losses, six are by five points or less (and two of the last three are by one point).

• The Concordia women (6-8 GNAC) host the Alaska Schools Thursday and Saturday at 5:15 pm.
