MLB’s most sought-after free agent, Aaron Judge, has touched down in San Francisco.

A video captured Judge upon arrival, where he gave an interesting remark about what he’s doing in town.

“Visiting some family and friends, that’s about it. That’s about it,” he said winking to the camera.

Bronx, NY: New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo and New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge in the dugout in the 3rd inning in game 4 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York on Oct 23, 2022.
(Photo by Thomas A. Ferrara/Newsday RM via Getty Images)

Judge is from Linden Calif., which is about 90 minutes away from San Francisco where the Giants, a team connected to the 2022 AL MVP in free agency, plays. Judge also grew up a Giants fan during his days of terrorizing baseball teams while playing for Linden High School and Fresno State, eventually being selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

So what exactly does Judge’s “friends and family” have planned?

“We got something,” he said smiling.

AFTER YANKEES’ ANTHONY RIZZO OPTS TO STAY IN BRONX, HE LOBBIES FOR AARON JUDGE TO RETURN

Looking to best the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, the Giants are looking to make a splash, and there would be none better than a homegrown product like Judge. And while there are many other suitors, including the Yankees, San Fran do have money to spend.

According to Spotrac, the Giants have the 14th-highest payroll in MLB at $95.95 million right now.

On the other hand, teams like the Yankees and New York Mets are at the top of the bunch and still willing to open their check books for Judge’s services.

Anthony Rizzo, who recently re-signed with the Yankees on a two-year deal, lobbied for his clubhouse buddy in Judge to head back to the Bronx.

“I hope Judge stays just for the sake of the game,” Rizzo said Wednesday, “because you see a lot of franchise icons not getting what they deserve for the team that they have done so much for.”

Rizzo has even said Judge deserves to be the next Yankees captain if he re-signs.

ROB MANFRED ‘ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT’ YANKEES, METS DID NOT COLLUDE IN AARON JUDGE SWEEPSTAKES

But the offers will be steep following his MVP campaign, and it may come down to who outbids the rest of the field. Will the Giants step up? Will the Yankees, Mets or maybe even the Dodgers flex their financial muscles?

Judge and his team will find out just how far each team is willing to expand their payroll in the coming weeks.

The 6-foot-7 slugger was named the AL MVP this past Thursday, receiving all but two first-place votes after a season where he set the American League record for most home runs in a single season with 62.

Other than home runs, he also led the majors in RBI (131), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.686), runs (133), OPS+ (211) and total bases (391).

His 111 walks were tops in the American League, and his .311 batting average ranked second in the AL, putting him in the Triple Crown conversation until the last couple of days of the season.

Bob Burnside is much more than your local Castro handyman.

After completing Peace Corps service in Peru and teaching in New York, he arrived in San Francisco in 1968, drawn by the idea of communal living. Since then, he’s lived in different communes and been a community activist, a newspaper editor, a gardener, a published author, an artist and, of course, Your Castro Handyman.

We caught up with Bob at his home and learned some more details about his very productive tenure here in the Castro.

How did you get into being a handyman?

“My dad had a shop, I learned basic carpentry skills from my dad and the rest I learned from taking things apart and being curious and paying attention. Before I started my own business as a handyman, I had a business called Custom Services, where I made fabric covered office dividers and reconfigured peoples offices. I also worked at a cabinet-making shop. When both of those stopped, I just started doing handy work around the neighborhood and it developed into my handyman business.”

What do you like about being a handyman?

“I like the hours, I have a lot of free time, and I enjoy helping people out and problem-solving. I also appreciate other people’s homes. Actually, I have a site called Unusualsfarchitecture.com. I appreciate going into different buildings, new buildings, old buildings, Victorians… I’ve even done jobs in the new developments around the Castro.”

What’s your take on all the new development?

“I think it’s largely done by speculators. I think they haven’t taken into full consideration the impact on San Francisco, especially the traffic.”

You’re also a sculptor. How did you get into that?

“My sculpture started with a senior project at RISD in 1964. Using the ability I have to visualize in three dimensions, I developed a geometric language based on the basic joint of 12 intersecting triangles. I did large-scale sculpture in the 1980s, both civic and corporate sculpture. I have pieces in Alaska, Reno, Wisconsin, and of course here in San Francisco (you can see them here). I got into sculpture because I got my degree from Rhode Island School of Design in industrial design, so it kind of led to that.”

What’s the biggest sculpture you’ve ever made?

“Probably the one in Alaska. It’s 12 feet high and it’s made of aluminum. I got $30,000 for that one.”

You used to run a publication called The Castro Star. Tell us about that.

“The Castro Star was started in 1995 by me as a member of CAPA (Castro Area Planning and Action), a community organization I was active in for ten years. I recruited volunteer writers because the Castro didn’t have a neighborhood paper. It’s kind of like what Hoodline’s turned into. We, like you, wanted to introduce important, interesting people living in the Castro, plus we dealt with neighborhood issues. We also published historic pictures of the Castro.

“Our print circulation was 2,000 copies. The only person paid was the delivery person, who we found out later was a homeless person living in Golden Gate Park. The newspaper ran for two years. After that, we combined with The Western Edition and became the San Francisco Observer for two years.”

You and your partner David started the Corona Heights Community Garden. How did you do it?

“We spent two years getting the garden set up, over neighborhood opposition because they said we’d take up all their parking. We started bringing kids to the Parks Department meetings from Rocky Mountain School. They pleaded for the park and started to make the old people look silly. After that, the Parks Department granted us the space and actually gave us money to develop the plot and gave us fruit trees, etc.”

“There are over 2,000 pictures of plants, shrubs, and trees I’ve taken that you can download for free and turn into a background, a screen saver, or make anything you want. I just thought the way people trim shrubbery sometimes, or the way Japanese people treat plants was interesting, so I put this all together with trees from the tree line of the Sierras and many other places, along with shrubs and trees from the neighborhood.”

Tell us about your involvement with Positive Resource.

“I started Positive Resource as a work referral service in my living room in 1989 using a word processor with a search function to join people with HIV with people wanting to help them by offering work. I left the organization when it combined with AIDS Benefit Councilors and became the Positive Resource that it is today.”

You’ve self-published two books. What were they?

“The first was a children’s book called The Adventures of Ed the Head. I had met a guy on a queer connect website, and instead of having sex, we decided to do a project together. That’s his head featured in the book. We each submitted concepts, and he liked mine better.

“I wanted to do a children’s book. My mom was a kindergarten teacher and I’m interested in child development. The other book is a book about foraging in San Francisco. There was an older guy who had a garden plot in the community garden , and he had all this knowledge about local edible plants. We followed him around Golden Gate Park and the Presidio, taking pictures of things he identified as being edible. Both are available for purchase online at Blurb.com.”

What’s your favorite tool?

“My Makita drill and driver. It’s powerful, it’s very portable, and I use it everyday for anything from hanging pictures to carpentry projects.”

If you’re in need of Bob’s handyman services, you can reach him by phone at (415) 336-7330, or at your castrohandyman (at) gmail [dot] com. He charges $70 per hour and claims that “no job is too small”.

The San Francisco Chronicle is excited to unveil the SFNext initiative. A new team of seven talented journalists will focus on tapping into our diverse city to find solutions to its most challenging problems.

SFNext wants to take a different approach to local journalism. The project, which launched Friday, June 10, will be solutions-focused and include public forums, polling, reported stories, a newsletter and a weekly podcast called “Fixing Our City,” which debuts June 21. In SFNext’s first story, reporter Noah Arroyo examines the tough road to economic recovery for Downtown San Francisco.

Let’s meet the team behind SFNext:

SFNext Director Jonathan Krim

Jonathan Krim
ProjectDirector

Krim joins The Chronicle with over four decades of experience in print and digital journalism. His career includes stints at the San Jose Mercury News, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, during which he focused on local, international and business/tech news. He supervised coverage that won two Pulitzer Prizes and launched numerous digital initiatives.

“Civic engagement is vital to the health of any community,” he said. “We hope to connect with San Francisco residents from all areas and walks of life in a collaborative effort to address our great city’s most pressing difficulties.”

Krim is a native of New York and a graduate of the University of Montana. He currently lives in Oakland with his wife, Joyce; their dog, Toast, and their cat, Kona.

Noah Arroyo
reporter

Arroyo is an award-winning, versatile journalist with a decade of experience covering local issues in San Francisco. He has spent most of his career examining the city’s intractable homelessness and housing-affordability crises, and is at home building reporting projects from the ground up. He previously wrote for the San Francisco Public Press and Mission Local.

“I thought for about a year that I was going to be a geologist,” Arroyo said. “Turns out there’s a lot of overlap, looking at minerals out in the field and poring over government documents.”

A native of Whittier, he attended San Francisco State University. He currently lives in the Tenderloin.

Courtesy of Adriana Rezal

Adriana Rezal
Data reporter

In addition to writing stories that focus on data as the key element, Rezal collaborates with other reporters to collect and analyze data.

Rezal covered local business, government and education news in the Greater Houston area while working as a reporter for the Community Impact newspaper. She then spent a summer in Chicago as a reporting intern for Borderless Magazine and wrote about immigration in the Midwest. She later gained national news experience while working as a data journalism intern for US News and World Report.

“I’m excited to play an active role in discussing the future of San Francisco by diving into the city’s data,” she said.

Rezal was raised in Baytown, Texas, a suburb east of Houston. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 2019 with a degree in international relations and global studies with a minor in journalism.

Laura Wenus
Podcast host/reporter

Wenus will host SFNext’s upcoming podcast, “Fixing Our City.” She is a local multimedia journalist who has worked in digital, print and radio newsrooms on daily, breaking and enterprise stories.

Wenus comes to The Chronicle from the nonprofit San Francisco Public Press, where she helped launch and hosted the podcast “Civic,” examining local social and political issues, with a special focus on nonpartisan election coverage.

“The things that affect our day-to-day lives the most tend to be local, so I want to keep digging into how we as a city do things, what that means for people who live and work here, and what new approaches we could try,” Wenus said.

She has also covered San Francisco housing and development news for Mission Local, reported an audio series about long-term nursing care, and has been a producer for a live current affairs show on the public radio station KALW. She lives in the Castro.

Cintia Lopez
Podcast producer/reporter

Lopez joins The Chronicle as producer and reporter for the “Fixing Our City” podcast.

She comes to The Chronicle from CapRadio in Sacramento, where she was a producer for their daily talk show, “Insight.” She has a background in newspaper and audio reporting from her previous jobs at WBUR in Boston and The Daily Democrat in Woodland, Calif.

“My first editor told me the best way to get to know a city you are reporting on is to get lost in it,” Lopez said. “I’m excited to do just that as I talk to people and get to know what they think of a city that is becoming my new home, while telling the stories that can help us create a better San Francisco.”

Lopez was raised mainly in the suburbs of Sacramento, where she attended community college before transferring to Sacramento State University and graduating with a degree in journalism.

Gary Baca
Podcast sound engineer

Audio engineer Gary BacaCourtesy of Gary Baca

With a background in independent films, DJing, radio and podcasts, Baca brings almost 10 years of multimedia experience to The Chronicle, including work on notable projects such as KQED’s “Rightnowish” as a producer. He has also worked at KPFA/KPFK in radio broadcasting.

“I want to bring light to the struggles people go through in an effort to create long-term solutions,” Baca said.

Born and raised in Richmond, Baca has spent the last decade living in Oakland.

Courtesy of Audrey Brown

Audrey Mei Yi Brown
Social media/engagement manager

Brown wants to use social media to create channels of thoughtful conversations to help reach residents beyond The Chronicle’s readership. Among other things, Brown will manage and moderate the @sfnext Twitter.

“I joined the SFNext team because I’m a San Franciscan who wants to play a role in healing my city,” Brown said. “I arrived in San Francisco when I was less than a year old, a Chinese American adoptee, and it will always be my first true home. Many of the city’s problems from my childhood persist today, and they’ve grown deep roots.
San Francisco would need an additional $1.3 billion in order to meet the state-mandated affordable housing production requirements set to kick in next year, according to a report from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development.

That’s just the start: The number swells each year, topping out at $2.4 billion by 2029.

While San Francisco is still working on its “housing element” — a housing production plan every California city is required to complete every eight years — city planners face a daunting task: how to create 82,000 new homes in the eight years from 2023 to 2030, including 32,000 that are affordable to very-low-income and low-income families. The housing requirements assigned to every city are known as Regional Housing Needs Allocation, or RHNA.

The looming affordable housing funding gap was the topic of a hearing Thursday at the Board of Supervisors Government Audit and Oversight Committee.

At the hearing, Committee Chairman Dean Preston questioned whether the city was doing enough to prioritize homes for working-class residents in a city where under 20% can afford market-rate rents — which reach into several thousand a month.

“What is clear is the existing strategies are not going to get us there,” he said. “In the best-case scenario, with traditional approaches, we chip away toward our goals but we certainly don’t get anywhere near them. New tools are needed.”

While San Francisco produces more affordable housing than any other city of comparable size — it currently has 11,000 units in its pipeline — its production of market-rate housing far outpaced its affordable-housing output in the current eight-year RHNA cycle. The city built 48% of its affordable goal and 151% of its market-rate goal.

The city is currently facing stern headwinds on both the creation of market-rate and low-income housing.

The Sister Lillian Murphy Community in San Francisco is an example of affordable housing coming online in San Francisco in 2022. The city says it does not have enough funding to push toward its affordable housing goals.

Samantha Laurey/The Chronicle

On the market-rate side, development applications have slowed to a trickle as for-profit builders have postponed or canceled projects because they don’t work financially. Market-rate projects generated $208 million for affordable-housing fees in the last five years.

On the subsidized side, soaring construction costs have added millions of dollars in costs to many projects, which puts San Francisco at a disadvantage when competing against other California cities for affordable-housing tax credits and bonds.

Lydia Ely, deputy director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, said that the city has little or no money beyond the projects that are already in the planning or construction phase.

She said that San Francisco is “disadvantaged” by a 2020 change in the way that California divides tax credits and affordable-housing bonds, the two programs that pay for most low-income housing construction. Before 2020, San Francisco could count on receiving the OK for all of its bond and tax credit applications. Under the new system, the city is losing out to cities that have far cheaper construction costs and land value.

She called the changes “the biggest threat to our production.”

“Those sources used to come as a right, over the counter,” said Ely. “Right now they are highly competitive and oversubscribed.

“Even though we are robustly pursuing all the local sources, we cannot expect those sources to grow significantly; it’s just too volatile, and the unknowns are too unknown,” she said. “Beyond the fact that we need more, we can’t anticipate what those sources will be.”

Ely said construction costs have risen 25% in the past two years, and every project that “is starting construction is needing a couple of million more” from the city.

Preston used the hearing to advocate that the city earmark all of the money generated by Proposition I for affordable housing. Prop. I, which Preston sponsored and which voters approved in 2020, increased transfer tax on properties over $10 million.

Preston said that voters “went and created $170 million of annual revenue general fund for affordable housing, yet we seem to be in a fight every year.”

Jeff Cretan, a spokesman for Mayor London Breed, said Prop. I is a general fund tax “not dedicated to any specific purpose by the voters.”

“The mayor and the board of supervisors make decisions how to allocate the general fund during the budget process, which kicks off in two weeks when the mayor introduces her proposed budget,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco woman was arrested this week after police said she flew to Detroit and rented an Airbnb in a nearby suburb to meet with a teen.

Stephanie Sin, 32, rented an Airbnb in Royal, Oak, Michigan, authorities said, according to media outlets. She ordered an Uber to the home of a 15-year-old in nearby Novi to pick him up, authorities said. The teen told his parents when the ride arrived, and they called the police.

Officials suspect she talked to the teen for more than a year.

Online court records showed she was booked into the Oakland County jail Monday night on sex offense charges and using a computer in commission of a crime.

Novi police said Sin met the boy on an app when he was 14, WJBK-TV reported. Their talks escalated from the app to text messages and became increasingly more explicit, police said.

In 2020, a five-alarm fire burned chef Simileoluwa Adebajo’s commissary kitchen to the ground. The only reason she wasn’t in the San Francisco building was because she had slept in for the first time in years.

“As my bus approached the downtown area, I could see this huge plume of smoke,” says Adebajo, chef-owner of Èkó Kitchen, the city’s only Nigerian restaurant and catering company. “As I got closer my brain started to boot and put the location at my kitchen.”

On that hot July day, her equipment and inventory — mostly imported from Nigeria — had been destroyed. But in a short time, amid a pandemic that had shifted the way people eat, Adebajo had evolved her business and fed thousands of people in need with comforting dishes like spicy jollof rice and honey bean porridge. To say she’s been very busy is an understatement.

This month alone, Adebajo is hosting a Feb. 18 pop-up dinner, curating virtual cooking classes for Black History Month and celebrating the release of her self-published cookbook, “From Èkó with Love: A Guide to Modern Nigerian Cooking” (Èkó Kitchen LLC, $50). Did we mention she is 26?

“She has great ambition and energy and is very inspiring to work with,” says Fabien Santos, owner of Merkado, the South Beach restaurant where Èkó Kitchen operates its catering and Saturday take-out. “Her food is something I had never tasted before. The depth of flavor is something you can really taste.”

In 2018, Adebajo quit her job as a financial analyst at Amazon’s Twitch to found Èkó Kitchen after seeing that Nigerian food was nowhere to be found in San Francisco’s otherwise diverse dining scene. (The East Bay, however, has two Nigerian spots: Hayward’s Golden Safari, which opened in 2017, and West Oakland’s newer Jolly-Jolly Coffee & Kitchen.) Adebajo also noticed that few people knew much about her home city of Lagos, Africa’s largest metropolis, beyond its social unrest.

Adebajo, who was born in New York but spent 14 years living in Lagos before moving to San Francisco for graduate school, describes Nigerian food as bold, audacious and spicy.

Simileoluwa Adebajo, chef-owner of Eko— Kitchen, San Francisco’s first Nigerian restaurant, serves up a dish of goat asun with fried plantains (dodo) and sweet potatoes, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group )

“It is very much like Nigerian people,” says Adebajo, who likes to steal a glance at diners who are tasting Nigerian food for the first time. “I want to see the emotion on their face, the shock and wonder. I want them to feel transported. So, I want them to feel comforted. It isn’t the healthiest food, but it is opening their eyes to a whole new world.”

Adebajo puts a modern spin on traditional Nigerian food. Her honey bean porridge is plant-based, with coconut instead of meat or fish, and her jollof rice is made with seven spices, including cameroon, cayenne, ginger, thyme and curry.

“It’s the way you layer them into the dish that makes them stand out,” she says. “It’s aromatic — sweet, spicy and smoky all at the same time.”

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 9: Simileoluwa Adebajo, chef-owner of Èkó Kitchen, San Francisco’s first Nigerian restaurant, serves up a dish of chicken suya, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

Nigerian food is not often in the spotlight, so when a recent TikTok challenge about fufu and egusi soup went viral and very negative, it caught Adebajo’s attention. Egusi soup is a nutty soup thickened with roasted and ground seeds of squash, melon or gourd. It usually has leafy greens — Adebajo puts spinach in hers — and is eaten with pounded yam.

“Some people were trying it and saying, ‘It’s so nasty’ and ‘This is homeless food,'” Adebajo says. “But this dish is such a big part of West African culture. It is nutritious and has high protein content. It’s not pretty, and it’s not familiar, but when I serve it I want to help people understand that just because something is not pretty doesn’t mean it’s not delicious.”

Adebajo started Èkó Kitchen by offering a delivery and catering menu of egusi soup, peppered chicken, puff puff and other authentic dishes out of that Mission District commissary kitchen. Her party-vibe dinners — with bar bites like suya spice-marinated beef skewers and Afrobeats playlists — grew such a fan base that she moved to a larger shared restaurant space in 2019.

But when the pandemic hit and dine-in eateries shuttered, Adebajo was forced to move back to the commissary kitchen. One week later, that massive fire, which took out six structures including the prep spots for at least five other food businesses, destroyed Èkó Kitchen.

Determined to rebuild, Adebajo launched a GoFundMe that caught Santos’ eye. Soon after, she accepted his offer to share the kitchen of his Mexican restaurant in the mornings. This enabled Adebajo to not only keep the eatery going, but to prepare nearly 15,000 meals for first responders and others in need as part of SF New Deal, the initiative that helped restaurants stay afloat by providing free meals for the city’s most vulnerable. Today, she is the youngest board member of the nonprofit.

In September 2020, she told Bon Appetit that she was simply doing what Nigerians have always done when they see their community in need. But Adebajo’s humanitarian work — including a fundraiser that sent food, masks and hand sanitizer to slums in Lagos — came at a time when she was suffering her own crippling losses.

These days, Adebajo is taking on more catering and private chef work, and developing her other businesses. Whipped Ori is an essential oil-infused skincare line made from shea butter imported from Nigeria and whipped to a light consistency. Her latest business, Apere, is a lifestyle brand that sells hand-woven bags, baskets and other home goods made by artisans in Lagos.

She would love for Èkó Kitchen to have its own space one day, but taking on a lease and the other associated costs of a restaurant are less than ideal right now.

“I’m still passionate about food,” she says. “I just want to do it in a way that makes sense for my life.”

Vincent Yuen likes to talk trash.

He walks around the city every day, picking it up. He keeps trash logs, documenting how much he found and where. He peppers his conversation with words like “garbology,” the study of garbage. His wife calls trash his greatest passion.

Lucky for Yuen, he lives in San Francisco, a filthy city that offers him a case study on just about every sidewalk. Lucky for San Francisco, Yuen is determined to see our city sparkle.

Yuen is the founder of Refuse Refuse — meaning reject trash — which has gone from a one-man cleanup operation outside his Inner Richmond home to a citywide effort, attracting legions of volunteers with their plastic bags and garbage pickers. Since its founding in March 2021, Refuse Refuse has collected 58,136 gallons of garbage.

I added a few more gallons to the tally Sunday in a cleanup of North Beach. Yuen tweeted a few months ago that he’d love former Giants star Hunter Pence; his wife, Lexi Pence; chronicle culture critic Peter Hartlaub; and me to join him.

After schedule conflicts and rain delays, we finally pitched in along with scores of other volunteers organized by Together SF, a civic engagement and volunteering group that helps Refuse Refuse coordinate its events. Before we picked up garbage, I asked Pence — known as the Reverend for his inspiring locker-room sermons — for a 2022 pep talk as the pandemic slogs on.

“’Finding Nemo’ is our mantra — just keep swimming, just keep swimming,” he said. “Pick up trash, plant trees, love on each other, be kind. We’ve just got to keep doing the best we can with what we’ve got.”

Yuen gave the crowd some tips before we started. Namely, stick to beginner trash and leave the needles, feces and dead animals to the professionals. On that cheerful note, we set out.

It turns out you notice new things about your city when your eyes are trained on the ground. For example, despite seeing very few cigarette smokers this day, San Francisco is blanketed in cigarette butts.

Yuen said they compose 35% of the garbage he finds citywide and even more in some neighborhoods. He said Hayes Valley is the No. 1 neighborhood when it comes to butts; there, they make up 60% of litter.

Other often-spotted pieces of litter on Sunday were disposable masks, coffee cups and their cardboard sleeves, candy wrappers, chip bags, banana peels and napkins. One-offs included a thank you card, a windshield wiper and a coconut with a straw in it.

Yuen said the biggest problem when it comes to trash is single-use products that companies churn out endlessly and that consumers use mindlessly and toss away — too often on the ground.

Ineffective city trash cans and their pallet number are another factor, he said. They’re easily broken and rifled through, spilling trash around them. In the city’s endless saga of building a new and improved city can, the manufacturing firm charged with making the prototypes should have them placed for testing on city streets in June, according to a spokesperson with Public Works.

In addition to lackluster city bins, another culprit in San Francisco is the wind that grabs trash, including from overstuffed, unlocked household bins, and sends it flying. Yuen said he’s found far more trash on the western sides of streets than the eastern sides because of wind patterns. The dirtiest street in the city, he said, is Brighton Avenue in the Ingleside neighborhood, which sits in a wind tunnel.

“It doesn’t help they have a McDonald’s on one end and a liquor store on the other,” he said.

Overall, though, Yuen said the dirtiest neighborhoods are the usual suspects: the Tenderloin, South of Market and the Mission. He said the homeless population does add to the city’s trash problem, but that they’re unfairly blamed for having an outsized role in the matter. Instead, he said, people of all income levels in all neighborhoods are responsible for our dirty city.

Bronte Wittpenn/The Chronicle

Yuen’s garbage fascination is a new development. So is his commitment to community service and his devotion to San Francisco despite living here since 2003. The 40-year-old Pasadena native worked as a self-employed sales consultant for years and saved enough money to take time off during the pandemic. His wife, Megan Yuen, works as a director of account operations for a retail consultant.

In seeking out safe, outdoor activities for his daughters, aged 5 and 7, he turned to picking up trash outside their inner Richmond home each day. Slowly, the block grew so clean, their trash walks got longer. Neighbors spotted them and joined, and their area grew notably cleaner. A post about his efforts on Nextdoor took off, and still more people tagged along.

In March 2021, he formalized the effort, though Refuse Refuse is just a community service group with a website. It’s not a nonprofit, and he accepts no donations. He is making $35,000 through a six-month contract with Together SF and Shine On SF, another new civic group committed to cleaning the city’s streets.

After a few hours of picking up trash with Yuen, I felt tired but satisfied. There aren’t very many civic problems in San Francisco that you can tackle on your own and see an immediate difference. I’ll certainly participate in more cleanups this year, and you can, too, at refuserefusesf.org.

Yuen doesn’t know what comes next. Friends have urged him to enter politics, but he’s not convinced he could make more change at City Hall than he can with his trash picker. So he’ll keep at it until one day, he hopes San Francisco’s reputation shifts from being dirty to pristine. He figures he owes it to the city.

“I have not been a very civically engaged person,” Yuen admitted. “I really haven’t done much for my city. I couldn’t name the supervisor of my district if my life depended on it until recently.

“I’m a homeowner in San Francisco, which elevates me to the top 1% of the world. Talk about privilege,” he said. “It only took a global pandemic to shake my head loose.”

According to a new study, 25 percent of San Franciscos don’t earn enough income to meet their basic needs.

United Ways of California published the study, which examines a factor called the Real Cost Measure, which estimates the amount of income it takes to make ends meet in California.

In California generally, nearly one in three people is struggling to meet daily needs, the study found, with black and Hispanic households being disproportionately affected. That’s 3.5 million families — 2.5 times the number of Californians who fall below the poverty line by federal government standards. Basic needs include rent, transportation and health care, among others.

Of these 3.5 million households, 97% have at least one working adult. More than half of these households have children under the age of 6.

The situation in San Francisco is similarly dire. The study found that 76,737 households are below real cost measure, 98% of which have at least one working adult. An urban family of four (two adults, one toddler, one school-age child) would need to hold more than three full-time, minimum-wage jobs just to achieve economic stability, the study found. It has been estimated that a family of four would need to earn $127,332 each year just to meet basic needs.

It’s no secret where most of San Francisco residents’ income goes: 28% of all households in the county spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Transportation, taxes, and food were also high costs for the region.

The study further breaks things down by neighborhood. In the historically black neighborhoods of Hunters Point and Bayview, 47% of households live below real cost. This compares to 18% in the Inner Mission and Castro neighborhoods.

“This study shows that many more working families in California are struggling to meet the cost of living than is officially estimated, and identifies significant gaps between what it costs families and their children to live with dignity and what it costs.” they actually deserve,” Peter Manzo, president and CEO of United Ways of California, said in a statement.

“This new perspective should be the yardstick by which we set our priorities, and the study is a wake-up call for local community partners, civic leaders, the business sector and elected officials that so much more needs to be done to help families not only survive, but actually thrive.”

Demand for home learning this fall was much higher than expected from San Francisco schools, creating a number of logistics issues that have left some children in limbo or are still awaiting the start of the school year.

The San Francisco Unified School District is struggling to accommodate any students whose families tried to remotely study them because they were uncomfortable about the transmission of the coronavirus. District staff initially planned an online program for approximately 450 students, or one percent of the student population, who were classified as “medically fragile” under federal guidance, with the remaining students expected to be in person again.

Instead, 735 students applied and were accepted, district officials said on Monday. And in July, state lawmakers passed Assembly Bill 130, which allows independent instruction of children at risk for personal instruction as directed by a parent or guardian. Just a few weeks before the start of the school year, the district had to add another 1,200 places.

In total, more than 1,900 students were offered places in the online programs that were not yet completely finished. This has left some students with no instructions or curriculum to learn from as their parents keep them at home for safety reasons.

“We did not have the lead time to start and implement this program thoughtfully,” said Eikia Ford-Morthel, SFUSD deputy headmistress, at a school committee meeting on Monday. “The resource and personnel constraints are real. There is a great personnel crisis in the education sector. “

Despite these setbacks, the staffing levels for the online learning program for the medically vulnerable students are now set. But the on-demand tutorial for parents who feel personal learning is too risky for their children needs 55 more educators, with dozens more open educator positions open, Ford-Morthel estimates. She said they hoped to leverage existing staff at websites that the online students are familiar with.

SFUSD was unable to provide demographic information on students seeking distance learning in time for release, but staff said very few attend high school. There is also evidence that Chinese families living in communal housing have strong online preferences. The Chinatown Community Development Center surveyed 294 families living in single rooms prior to the school year, 70 percent of whom were against sending their children for personal study.

Almost 900 students who have been admitted to either program have yet to confirm their participation by signing the agreement. Some may not know or have not accessed the agreement, but others struggle to understand what it involves and whether it is the right step as the schedule includes far less live teaching than distance learning.

Monolingual families in particular fear that their children will be left behind without practical support and staff to connect with. Some parents reported school management members Monday that more than a month had passed and they either had no information about their application status or had received schoolwork for their children to learn from.

“You are stuck in this dilemma,” said Jen Chan, resident services manager at CCDC, which owns and runs SROs. “Some of them may still be enrolled in their current school to take the risk. Some parents are at home trying to teach them. It also brings a lot of psychological anxiety to the families. “

Nearly 500 students admitted to the online program have returned to the physical classroom since their admission, while 577 opted out for distance learning.

School and public health officials have worked to reassure families that face-to-face learning is safe and that COVID-19 cases among adolescents are falling. The Department of Health noted that schools in San Francisco had no COVID-19 outbreaks, defined as “three or more cases in unrelated households where the source of infection was at the school”. By September 10, about 90 percent of children between the ages of 12 and 17 had been fully vaccinated.

School board members Jenny Lam, Gabriela López and Alison Collins met with SRO families in Chinatown to hear concerns about access and distancing testing in schools, Han said. Lam said the focus is on understanding concerns and educating families about safety measures and guidelines to increase confidence in sending children in person.

“That’s why it’s so important that we communicate consistently so that families know what we’re doing to protect our students,” said Lam. “We know that we have to do even better in strengthening communication, increasing the number of staff and implementing the program.”
