Charlie Walker, who recently starred in a film starring Luke Cage's Mike Colter, has died aged 89.

In the 1960s, Walker led protests to open public construction jobs to black contractors, who were excluded and intentionally discriminated against and passed over in favor of white truckers and white-dominated unions.

He later became one of the most successful truckers in the United States and was highly regarded for cleaning up San Francisco Bay after an oil spill in the early 1970s.

The post Charlie Walker, San Francisco's Black Contractor Hero, Honored by Biopic Star Mike Colter in Face of His Death appeared first on Blavity.

Walker's legacy was immortalized in the recent biography I Am Charlie Walker.

“Charlie Walker was a true original. Cut from the same cloth as men like my own father and uncles,” Colter said. Men from the 70s who seized the opportunity. Charlie was unapologetic about his ambition and his desire to carve out a place for himself in the world. He paved the way for his family and set an example for future generations. He was a character who moved through the world with a certainty and pride that made people notice him. He deserved to have his story told. It was an honor to portray him. He will never be forgotten. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Mike Regan, producer of I'm Charlie Walker, said: “On behalf of our executive producer Bill O'Keeffe and our entire cast and crew, we are all devastated by Charlie's death, but at the same time we are here to celebrate his amazing To celebrate life.” Our thoughts are with his beautiful wife Annette, his entire family and his beloved community of Bayview Hunters Point in San Francisco. We could talk endlessly about Charlie's achievements and the impact he had on so many, but we also know that Charlie would tell us to get back to work. And that’s exactly what we will do to continue to honor his legacy and wonderful life.”

“Like many others, I had the honor and privilege of spending a lot of time with Charlie as he reveled in stories and wisdom,” said Patrick Gilles, director of “I’m Charlie Walker.” “He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.”

In 2022, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to honor Walker by naming a street in Bayview Hunters Point “Charlie Way.”

Walker is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annette Walker, his daughters Charlette Carnegia and Ruedell Walker, his son Charles Walker Jr., his eleven grandchildren, including his eldest grandchild, Geoffrea Morris, whom he helped raise, and his Family 13, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews as well as friends from the community.

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants first base coach Antoine Richardson and San Diego Padres third base coach Mike Scheldt hugged the field before their game Wednesday, a day after Richardson was fired following an incident he said included Scheldt’s suspension of “racist undertones.”

Richardson said Shieldt used an expletive and told Giants manager Gabby Kapler to take control of Richardson on Tuesday night. At the time, Richardson said he interpreted Scheldt’s comment “as if I were to be under the control or piece of property or enslaved.”

On Wednesday, the two men chatted in the square and shook hands before addressing the media about the exchange. They hug after talking to reporters.

“I don’t think he’s a racist,” said Richardson, who is black. “I think, however, for the point, that he recognizes that some of his words, ours, are powerful and moving. And we just want to spread awareness of a situation that I think is important to our community.”

Scheldt, who is white, admitted he used inappropriate language and said he appreciated Richardson saying he was not racist.

“I am grateful to Antoine for making that clear,” Scheldt said. “He’s obviously misinterpreted, and I think he knows it, my value as a human being is to love people. That’s exactly what I stand for. So I appreciate him explaining that to myself and my family.”

He said, “I don’t know Antoine’s heritage. I can’t walk in his shoes. I can only have sympathy and love, which I have, and always have in my life.”

Padres’ third base coach Mike Scheldt, right, speaks at a news conference next to Giants first base coach Antoine Richardson on Wednesday. Photo by Associated Press/Jeff Chiu

Richardson told reporters Tuesday night that his expulsion stemmed from an incident that began when Scheldt approached his San Francisco hideout.

Richardson said he asked Scheldt what he needed. The Giants coach said that Scheldt used an expletive and told Kapler to “control” Richardson. “At the time, I went up a notch and said, ‘Excuse me, I didn’t believe what I heard’ and he was sent off, after Tuesday’s game,” Richardson said after Tuesday’s game.

Scheldt said on Wednesday that Padres’ players and coaches had upset the Giants team. Stephen Duggar He stole second base in the second half with San Francisco leading 10-1. When Schilt went for third base training at the top of the third, he and Richardson exchanged words.

“There are some feelings running through. We looked at each other and then I looked into the bunker to find a couple who don’t really need to reveal their names, but guys I’ve had relationships with since they were younger or I am,” said Scheldt.

“I was looking for some support to try and defuse the situation. I couldn’t find her and then we exchanged words. I won’t touch who started it. We’re past that point… and I could have handled it differently with my words.”

Schilt said he believes something positive will come from the controversy.

“The truth is, we’ve approached this difficult solution publicly as men, with a solution in our hearts without any animosity. And I think it’s a great example of how people connect together regardless of backgrounds, colors or situations,” he said.

After Richardson was sent off, Giants assistant coach Alyssa Naken took his place at first base. Nakin made history as the first woman to coach on the field in a MLB season game.

The Giants won 13-2.

The Dallas Cowboys made the most with first-round pick Micah Parsons in 2021, as the rookie out of Penn State put together a monstrous season en route to taking home NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Honors. Parsons proved himself as a versatile playmaker en route to terrorizing opposing offenses, and versatility is something Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy wants to maintain with Parsons “moving around” despite questions over a potential full-time move to defensive end.

“The people that say, ‘Hey, why don’t you play him at defensive end?’ (are) very fair. That’s a very fair question,” McCarthy said, via the team’s website. “But we’ve made it clear: We want him moving around.
GREENVILLE, SC — Tom Izzo straightened out his quarter-zip, folded his arms, stared into the crowd and exhaled. It was right before tipoff, a few minutes past 5:15 pm For the next 40 minutes, he would find himself deadlocked in a high-stakes, narrative-filled coaching battle, against a team more talented than his, with a chance to play spoiler. The sweet spot.

These opportunities, on a stage like this, are the ones Izzo lives for. This was the type of matchup basketball fans and sports fans at-large tune in to watch unfold, largely because of the two faces of these programs. Duke versus Michigan State. Izzo versus Mike Krzyzewski, one final time. A storyline only topped by the game that transpired.

It just wasn’t the result Izzo or his Michigan State team were looking for.

“He’s got another game to play, and I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do,” Izzo said of Krzyzewski. “(I’ll) probably be beating myself up for a week because not many times do you get an opportunity to be right there in the threshold of something special, and it slipped away.”

That’s how Izzo will remember this one — Michigan State’s 85-76 loss to Duke and Coach K in the second round. As he answered questions in his postgame news conference, Izzo said his team didn’t do what it needed to in order to pull out a win like this. When he says that, he’s speaking from experience. There’s a good chance he’ll look back at this, perhaps on the flight home, and think about what went wrong. Because for all its wars, this team was right there.

If he were to win this game, with this team, against that coach … well, you can only imagine how satisfying that would’ve been for Izzo. Maybe that’s why he won’t soon forget this one. Because there was a point where it looked like it was meant to be.

New Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel quickly ascended to his first NFL head coaching job. And Peter King wrote in Football Morning in America that McDaniel owes some of that success to the leap made by Deebo Samuel.

“The story of the new Miami Dolphins coach is actually a story about Deebo Samuel,” King wrote. “How McDaniel, the 5-9, 165-pound former Yale wide receiver, climbed the ladder from unpaid coaching staff intern/gopher in Denver in 2005 to the exclusive 32-coach fraternity is instructive. In fact, it says everything about McDaniel, who looks far more like a Geico account executive than one of 32 NFL leaders of men.”

McDaniel took the story from there.

“So,” McDaniel began, “Deebo. we [the 49ers coaching staff] had him on our team at the Senior Bowl the January before we got to the Super Bowl. We had a saying: From Mobile to Miami, because the Super Bowl was in Miami that year, with our players. And we actually did it. He started calling me his favorite coach then. I don’t really know why. We were always close and whatever.

“This past season, I had a talk with him in the offseason. I was meeting with Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo at 6 am every day during training camp because we needed them to step up. I asked Deebo, ‘Are you the best player on the offense?’ He was like, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘The time is now. Do you really want to be great? Greatness is hard. That’s why it’s great. It’s not easy. It’s a burden, really.'”

Samuel fared well with that burden, putting up a career year and turning into one of the NFL’s most dangerous all-purpose threats. He caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns, all of which would have been enough for a terrific season, except that he also added 59 carries for 365 yards (6.2 yards per rush) and eight scores on the ground.

McDaniel said on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz that he hopes to tap into similar potential in Dolphins wideout and former Alabama star Jaylen Waddle.

“Waddle!” McDaniel said, when asked which player other than quarterback Tua Tagovailoa that he could get the most out of. “I just talked with him on Monday, and I think he understands his leadership role on this team. He’s a phenomenal talent, and guess what, the best and easiest way to get yards is give it to a really talented player. The 49ers, the last four or five years, have led the league in YAC. The reason is because we were addicted to getting our skill position players that are good with running the ball the ball. So yes, I would start him in fantasy. Beyond that, I think you should see some jumps in the Miami Dolphins’ offense next year. What those look like will be determined this offseason and the way the players work and attack things moving forward.”

SANTA CLARA (AP) — The Miami Dolphins hired San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their head coach Sunday, making him the first minority candidate to get hired so far this offseason.

McDaniel, who is biracial, replaces Brian Flores, who was fired despite posting winning records in the final two of his three seasons in Miami.

READ MORE: Graffiti Mob Targeting San Francisco Mission District Businesses

Flores sued the NFL, the Dolphins and two other teams last week over alleged racist hiring practices for coaches and general managers, saying the league remains “rife with racism” even as it publicly condemns it.

McDaniel had worked under 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan for the past 11 seasons and got his first shot as a head coach after only one year as offensive coordinator.

McDaniel was credited for his role in developing San Francisco’s creative running game that featured receiver Deebo Samuel as a running back at times, along with other wrinkles.

“Mike is awesome,” 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said last month. “He really is. He’s kind of that, I don’t want to say the mastermind behind everything, but he’s kind of that guy in the background that doesn’t say a whole ton to a lot of people, but his mind is always moving. The ideas that he comes up with are so fresh and new that it’s a cool guy to have on the staff. …

“He’s a lot smarter than most of us. So he dumbs it down for us and kind of gets us all on the same page.”

McDaniel could bring some of those wrinkles to Miami to feature playmaking receiver Jaylen Waddle in even more creative ways,

The Dolphins struggled offensively this season despite finishing 9-8 in a roller-coaster campaign that featured a seven-game losing streak followed by a seven-game winning streak.

Second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa struggled at times and Miami ranked 22nd in the league in scoring this season.

READ MORE: Woodside Officials Forced To Reverse Course On Mountain Lion Sanctuary Declaration

The 49ers had a much more productive offense despite also having a quarterback with limitations in Garoppolo.

The Yale-educated McDaniel got his coaching start on Mike Shanahan’s staff in Denver in 2005. He worked an offensive assistant in Houston for in 2006-08 when Kyle Shanahan was on that staff. McDaniel then worked in Washington for three years with Mike Shanahan as coach and Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator before working under Kyle Shanahan when he was a coordinator in Cleveland and Atlanta.

McDaniel then joined Shanahan’s staff in San Francisco in 2017 as run game coordinator and took over the offensive coordinator role this past season.

The Dolphins’ hiring of McDaniel followed some paths the team has used in the past, most notably how he is yet another first-time NFL head coach.

McDaniel becomes the 10th consecutive hire by the Dolphins to have exactly zero previous games as the person in charge of an NFL sideline, following Jim Bates, Nick Saban, Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, Dan Campbell, Adam Gase and Flores. Bates, Bowles and Campbell were all interim hires.

Of those, including McDaniel, six have come during Ross’ ownership.

And all of those moves have come in the last 18 years, starting with the firing of Dave Wannstedt and Bates being put into place nine games into the 2004 season.

The Dolphins haven’t won a playoff game since 2000 for the second-longest active drought in the NFL to the Detroit Lions.

The hiring of McDaniel leaves the NFL with four minority head coaches with openings remaining in Houston and New Orleans. Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, Robert Saleh of the Jets and Washington’s Ron Rivera are the others.

MORE NEWS: Suspected DUI Driver Slams Into Salinas Police Investigating Double Homicide

The 49ers will receive two extra third-round picks the next two years as compensation for developing a minority head coach.

While it’s little more than a talking point, the idea of the 49ers trading right tackle Mike McGlinchey this offseason has been tumbled.

The grass is not always greener on the other side.

A year ago, San Francisco 49ers fans regularly pointed out Mike McGlinchey’s shortcomings. Playing under ideal weight perhaps, McGlinchey wasn’t always a full commitment in pass protection. But when he was beaten, he was badly beaten. Just looking at some of these puffs can indicate that.

So it might have come as a surprise when the Niners exercised McGlinchey’s fifth-year option for 2022, fully guaranteed $10.88 million according to Over the Cap last offseason, with full intentions that he still at least another year remains.

While fans might not have had total confidence in McGlinchey’s abilities, San Francisco clearly did.

Not nearly as strong as the 49ers’ perennial Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, McGlinchey nevertheless looked much better during his 2021 season before suffering a serious quadriceps injury that ended his season after eight games.

However, amid all the speculation about what they might be doing this offseason, an idea was raised that the Niners might be trading with McGlinchey in 2022:

Trading Mike McGlinchey would save the 49ers $10.8 million this season. Should the 49ers consider moving it?

— Leo Luna (@LeoLuna93) February 3, 2022

The overwhelming response to the poll was “yes,” which isn’t too surprising.

But as is usual with things like this, who would be McGlinchey’s replacement if he were traded? And would a team even want to trade for him?

Mike McGlinchey is far from perfect, but not bad

Again, McGlinchey looked better in 2021 than he did in 2022, and his efforts to block running haven’t exactly let up since his 2018 rookie campaign.

It’s not a perfect assessment. But Pro Football Focus gave McGlinchey a 70.0 pass blocking rating in 2021 compared to 58.3 the season before, and he was on track to concede just four sacks and six quarterback hits versus the five and six quarterback hits, respectively .eleven allowed last season.

While Tom Compton managed to close the gap in McGlinchey’s wake in the second half of the year, and with only so-so results, it’s pretty obvious that San Francisco trusts McGlinchey as a vital cog on the offensive line. particularly in support of the running game, where he was already successful during his college days at Notre Dame.

Would any of this be enough to prompt a trade?

More importantly, the team must have a contingency plan in place. Center Alex Mack is aging, the 49ers need to consider an upgrade for right guard Daniel Brunskill, and left guard Laken Tomlinson is a pending free agent this offseason.

Would creating another need on the O line be a smart move?

The 49ers might struggle to trade Mike McGlinchey even if they wanted to

True, the Niners could settle all of McGlinchey’s $10 million+ in 2022 if they traded him.

It’s rare, however, that other teams are willing to offer much in return for year-long “loan” players, unless those teams have plans to create a long-term renewal following a trade.

That shouldn’t be a problem for the 27-year-old McGlinchey, who is still awaiting his first free-agent deal after his rookie contract expires.

Read more: 49ers 2022 Free Agency Tracker: Who’s Coming and Going?

But the guaranteed nature of this 2021 deal could certainly act as a distraction, and the fact that he’s picked up a serious injury that could easily affect his ability next season will almost certainly act as a deterrent as well.

Put simply, any team interested in O-Line help this offseason probably won’t want to offer more than an early third-day NFL draft pick in return for their services, especially given their risk of not making it on time to recover.

And since San Francisco doesn’t exactly have a high-quality backup plan to replace McGlinchey, it seems a lot more likely that he’ll see through at least the final year of his contract.

The Denver Broncos are still settling into the new Nathaniel Hackett era.

The brand-new head coach has already made a few momentous coaching hires, installing former Green Bay tight ends coach Justin Outten as offensive coordinator, former Minnesota OC Klint Kubiak as QBs coach/pass game coordinator, and former San Francisco assistant Butch Barry as offensive line coach.

In hiring Barry, Hackett opted to move on from Denver’s venerated O-line coach Mike Munchak, which came as a bit of a shock to many in Broncos Country, considering his reputation and resume. Over the last few days, Hackett hasn’t stopped at Munchak.

9NEWS’ Mike Klis has reported that Hackett has notified multiple Vic Fangio holdovers that they won’t be retained. Those coaches are: DC Ed Donatell, LBs coach Reggie Herring, defensive pass game coordinator Chris Beake, TEs coach Wade Harman, assistant DL coach Mike Heistand, and offensive quality control coach Chris Cook.

Two of those coaches were on Denver’s Super Bowl 50 championship staff — Herring and Beake. Some fans will have misgivings over those two dismissals, especially Herring, whose resume coaching linebackers in Denver speaks for itself, elevating relative no-namers like Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall in days of yore and recently, Josey Jewell and Alexander Johnson, to say nothing of 2021 rookie Baron Browning and Jonas Griffith.

Hackett is moving to install his own hand-chosen guys, and for the most part, that is par-for-the-course for a new head coach. Hackett is mostly keeping his hires thus far within the Shanahan/Gruden coaching-tree family.

Hackett informed former OC Pat Shurmur that he would not be retained. The Broncos also let former special teams coordinator Tom McMahon hit the bricks.

It’ll be interesting to see whether D-line coach Bill Kollar is retained by Hackett, along with WRs coach Zach Azzanni and RBs coach Curtis Modkins. All three have created a lot of production within their respective position groups, even though it hasn’t come out in the wash relative to team success.

As much as these coaches’ departure might sting a little, it’s important to remember that this collection of coaches hasn’t been able to cut the mustard over the last few years. The Broncos haven’t made the playoffs since hoisting the Lombardi Trophy six years ago and haven’t even sniffed the postseason since Gary Kubiak’s final season in 2016 where the team finished 9-7 and narrowly missed out on the tournament.

The Hackett hire signed GM George Paton’s resolve to really shake things up in Denver and rebuild this team — starting with the coaching staff — in his image. Out with the old, in with the new.

At this point, the Broncos have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain from hiring younger, hungry coaches still championing at the bit to make their mark in the NFL. let it happen
