Cole, pictured, was likely murdered in her home before her body was placed in the septic tank, authorities said

Since her death nearly three years ago, what would have been Elizabeth Wiesenfeld’s first grandson was born and her first granddaughter is set to arrive soon.

But Betsy, as she was known to her family, never had the chance to meet them. Instead, she was killed and taken from her Whitehall home and left in a wooded area of Plum, where she was found nearly a year later.

“I feel that my sister was just beginning a new chapter in her life, one that would be full of joy and satisfaction as she was a person with a great reservoir of love in her heart, and the role of grandmother would have been that outlet , that fulfillment,” wrote her brother, Christopher Lagi, in a victim impact statement to Allegheny County Common Pleas Court. “She died on the verge of a great outpouring of love.”

On Monday, the man who killed Wiesenfeld, 67, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and related counts before Common Pleas Judge Alexander P. Bicket.

As part of a plea agreement in the case, Douglas Berry, 50, of McKeesport, will serve 17 to 40 years in state prison.

He apologized to the victim’s family.

“I want everyone to know how sorry I am for the mistakes I’ve made,” he said. “I’ve learned to pray for forgiveness. I apologize to the family for not doing more, and I apologize to Betsy. I can’t move mountains.”

Wiesenfeld went missing the morning of April 30, 2019.

Deputy District Attorney Kevin Chernosky said her daughter, Kathleen Graham, received a text message at 11:11 am that day from her mother’s cellphone, saying that she had met someone and was leaving town.

Graham felt that was out of the ordinary and went to her mother’s home on East Barlind Drive and called the Whitehall police. Inside, they found signs of a struggle, including furniture out of place and apparent blood stains on the bedding.

Wiesenfeld’s home security system showed her front door had opened at 8:40 am, and her garage door opened at 8:55 am Later, surveillance footage from homes in the neighborhood showed a truck similar to one Berry drove pulling into her driveway. License plate reading cameras showed that same truck driving along Route 51 earlier that morning.

Chernosky said a man wearing a distinctive hooded sweatshirt also was seen using Wiesenfeld’s debit card to withdraw $500 from an ATM. Later, that same card was found melted inside a beer can at Berry’s home, the prosecutor said. The card had prints from Berry’s thumb and index finger on it.

Berry, who had performed handyman work at Wiesenfeld’s home, quickly became a suspect. He was charged with illegally possessing a firearm on May 2, 2019, and has remained in custody since then.

He was charged with criminal homicide in September 2019, before Wiesenfeld’s body was found on April 19, 2020, by a Plum police officer patrolling an area known for illegal dumping.

Chernosky told the court that a plea agreement had long been considered by the victim’s family, particularly before her body had been found.

“We very much desired to find her,” he said.

Prior to sentencing, prosecutors submitted 15 letters to Bicket, all of them describing the impact that Wiesenfeld’s death has had on her family.

She was one of six siblings and worked as a nurse at an adult day care facility. When her mother became ill, she cared for her.

Wiesenfeld was known for her soft, sweet and caring personality.

She was married to a former Pittsburgh police officer, who died several years ago. They had one daughter.

Wiesenfeld made everyone feel loved, her family wrote. She was gracious and compassionate.

She also loved God.

“She always wanted everyone she met to know that they were loved by God,” Graham said. “She would joke that she was a preacher and would never stop preaching.”

Graham wrote that, as an only child, she and her mother were very close. She last saw her a few days before Wiesenfeld was killed.

“I remember dropping her off at her house, and it was raining,” Graham said. “She stood in the rain at her front door and waved to me goodbye until I couldn’t see her anymore.

“That was my mother’s love, she wasn’t bothered by the rain at all. And when I think of my mom, I picture that last moment, her smiling and waving goodbye.”

Wiesenfeld made delicious artichoke dip and sweet potato casserole, said her loved ones, and was known as the glue that held their large extended family together.

Beth Graham, Kathleen Graham’s mother-in-law, wrote in her letter to the court that their families joined together for holidays, birthdays and Sunday suppers.

Beth Graham said that at Wiesenfeld’s mother’s funeral, Wiesenfeld sang “Amazing Grace” during the service.

Every night, as Beth Graham now rocks her grandson to sleep, she sings that song.

“I tell him how his grandma Betsy would have loved him and sang to him, too,” she wrote. “It makes me sad to know that he will never get a warm hug or an I love you from her.

“But one day I will tell him what a great grandma she would have been and how much she would have loved him.”

Cole was last seen alive on Thursday, February 24, at an event in Downtown Jensen Beach.

According to the MCSO, detectives spent hours excavating Cole’s backyard late Friday night and early Saturday morning and located the body submerged in the contents of the tank about four feet underground.

Shortly afterward, detectives located and arrested 34-year-old Keoki Hilo Demich and charged him with second-degree murder. Demich performed handyman duties for Cole.

Pressure mounted Tuesday on the volunteer group redrawing San Francisco’s supervisory districts to finish its work as soon as possible after failing to meet its deadline last week.

Three people sued the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force in response to the group’s delay, which could lead to a judge deciding on new district boundaries. Separately, city lawyers told the task force it must adopt a final draft map when it meets on Thursday.

Task force members narrowly voted last week to blow past the April 15 deadline that the City Charter set for having new districts in place, opting to continue working on shaping the new district boundaries amid intense public scrutiny and political controversy.

Now, the lawsuit raises the possibility that the final map may be picked by a San Francisco Superior Court judge instead of the task force, a step that could have far-reaching consequences for city supervisor elections.

The City Attorney’s Office also contributed to the legal pressure Tuesday, publishing an opinion that said the task force must adopt a new final draft map when it meets again Thursday and approve it as the final map, after two additional hearings, on April 28. Lawyers for the city said in the memo that “there can be no further delays” now that the task force has missed its charter-mandated deadline.

The legal developments mark the latest twists in an unusually tumultuous process over which neighborhoods fall into which of San Francisco’s 11 supervisory districts. The result could affect the political balance on the Board of Supervisors depending on how the lines are drawn.

Todd David, the leader of a San Francisco housing development advocacy group and one of the people who filed the lawsuit, said he was motivated by a desire to defend the democratic process against what he saw as unwarranted political intrusion.

“It was very disturbing to me to watch a group of hardworking volunteers be bullied by the extreme NIMBY left,” David said, referring to people who oppose development. “From a political point of view, nobody loved the maps. It seemed to me that (task force members) did their job.”

The map that the task force had prepared to adopt last week was met with outcry from political activists, neighborhood leaders and other residents who viewed it as an attack on progressive representation. They specifically objected to proposals that would have put the Tenderloin and South of Market into different districts while also splitting up the Bayview and Potrero Hill, among other changes.

The suit filed by David, along with plaintiffs Jon Schwark and Drew Min, asks a judge to hold a hearing early next week and adopt a final district map before May 2, the date by which the Department of Elections needs the map to prepare for candidates running in the November election. In addition to the task force, the suit also names the city elections director John Arntz as a defendant.

Jen Kwart, a spokeswoman for the City Attorney’s Office, responded to the lawsuit with a statement saying her office continued to advise the task force “so that it can complete its work by May 2.” She said city officials had not been served with the suit but would “review it and respond appropriately.”

David said he hoped the task force would sign off on a map of new districts Thursday, rendering intervention by a judge unnecessary. But his suit will remain in the meantime as a “safety valve” in case the task force continues to delay, he said.

“The point of the lawsuit is to get a legal map done as soon as possible,” David said. “We would certainly come together and have a conversation and would seriously consider dropping the lawsuit if the map is done in a very quick time frame.”

The task force’s decision to take more time to work on the district boundaries was met with praise by progressive leaders who saw the group’s earlier proposals as politically tainted. By potentially moving neighborhoods like the tenderloin out of the districts where they are currently located, the task force would separate communities with long-standing ties and shared interests, diluting their political voices, critics say.

For example, the draft map the task force voted down last week would have left the city’s Transgender District — which spans parts of the Tenderloin and SoMa — represented by different supervisors. It also would have done the same to thousands of Filipinos who live in San Francisco, said Raquel Redondiez, director of the community group SOMA Pilipinas.

“If you look at the wealth disparity between the communities they preserved and the communities they broke up, they went after the most vulnerable and marginalized communities,” Redondiez said of the draft map.

Redondiez was among more than 20 community leaders who signed on to an April 13 letter denouncing the now-failed draft map as “racist, anti-working class, and a blueprint for gentrification.”

The task force is in charge of updating the district lines to account for population shifts reflected in the last census. The group’s nine members are appointed in equal numbers by the mayor, the Board of Supervisors and the city Elections Commission.

As the task force’s deadline neared and controversy escalated around the proposed boundaries, the Elections Commission considered removing its three appointees but ultimately decided against doing so. The commission’s move was prompted in part by concerns raised by the League of Women Voters of San Francisco and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

Alison Goh, the league president, called the next meeting of the task force a “positive sign” that members “really intend to listen to community input.”

“We really hope the community continues to show up and make their voices heard,” Goh said. “If any of the community members, especially the most vulnerable, underrepresented folks, feel unheard, this is really the meeting where they need to show up and give comment.”

Thursday’s task force meeting starts at noon in Room 406 of City Hall.

The body of a Florida woman was found by deputies in a septic tank buried in her backyard, and her handyman has been charged with killing her, authorities said Saturday.

Investigators in Jensen Beach, Florida found a body believed to be that of Cynthia Cole, submerged in the septic tank 4 feet (1.2 meters) underground after hours of excavating her back yard late Friday, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Shortly after finding the body, deputies arrested her handyman, Keoki Hilo Demich, who was charged with second-degree murder. Cole, 57, had been missing for more than a week.

No further details were provided. Jensen Beach is almost 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of West Palm Beach.

“There are elements to this case still being investigated,” the post said. “We will update the community with additional information as it becomes available.”

There was no online court record available for Demich, so it was unknown if he had an attorney.

A handyman is facing second-degree murder charges after a missing Florida woman’s body was found in her backyard septic tank, the Miami Herald reports.

Investigators found the body of Cynthia Cole, 57, submerged four feet underground inside the septic tank of her home in Jensen Beach, Florida, about 50 miles north of West Palm Beach.

The discovery comes just two days after Cole was reported missing. She was last seen at a community music and arts event known as the Jammin’ Jensen in Downtown Jensen Beach on Feb. 24.

Shortly after finding Cole’s body, police arrested her handyman, 34-year-old Keoki Hilo Demich, who has been charged with second-degree murder.

“The first person that we really came across that was of interest was a person she had known, as far we know, for years. It was a handyman, somebody who just helped her,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told reporters this weekend. “She was a single woman alone, he helped her.”

Snyder added, “Fairly soon after we began talking to him, we became suspicious. We got so suspicious we started doing almost around the clock surveillance.”

According to Snyder, security footage showed Demich exiting Cole’s car near Demich’s home the same night that Cole was last seen.

“It was probably as challenging a crime scene as I’ve ever seen,” Snyder said. I’ve been doing this 40 plus years. I’ve never seen anything like it. None of us had any experience in recovering evidence from a septic tank. It took us all night.”

Snyder believes robbery could’ve been a possible motive.

A San Francisco college student rented a Tesla and embarked on a road trip nearly a week ago, and his frantic family says they haven’t heard from him since. “PLEASE PLEASE keep on the lookout for him!” Jerry Liang posted on Instagram after losing contact with his brother Christopher. “I’ve attached pictures of him and the rental car (white Tesla) he was driving. PLEASE share this Instagram post on your story to increase visibility. My family is offering 10k dollars to the person who gives us the lead to his finding. You can reach me at jerryliangglobal@gmail.com.” A San Francisco police spokesperson told SFGATE that the department had not been made aware of the case, and that a report had been filed with police in Irvine, California, where Christopher was supposed to meet up with friends but later broke his plans. His brother said the family is especially worried because of the “erratic nature of this trip” and his sibling’s “mental health issues.” “I am at my wit’s end and am now reaching out to the public for help,” Liang wrote.

NORTHSTAR AT TAHOE (CBS SF) – A California Highway Patrol helicopter equipped with high-tech detection equipment began traversing the skies over the Northstar ski area Thursday morning in hopes of receiving a signal from an avalanche safety beacon who may have picked up missing truckee skier Rory Angelotta.

The Placer County sheriff said Angelotta was a skilled skier and reportedly had avalanche gear with her when he disappeared in a snow storm on Saturday.

The search for missing skier Rory Angelotta on @Northstar_CA resumed today. More than 60 employees met today on the first clear day since the search began on Christmas night.
So far, four days of searching in difficult weather conditions have found no trace of Angelotta.

Tracks in deep snow in a remote mountain area had raised hopes on Tuesday, but then found they were being pulled by a bear.

The last of a series of violent winter storms finally moved east early Thursday. As of December 21st, 135 inches – over 11 feet – of snow have fallen at Northstar.

According to the sheriff’s office, friends of Angelotta reported him missing when he failed to show up for Christmas dinner on Saturday night after a day of skiing. Authorities said his car was found in the resort parking lot and his calls went straight to voicemail.

The sheriff’s social media accounts announced Tuesday that the Nevada Air National Guard was deploying a pioneering infrared-equipped Blackhawk helicopter to assist searchers in the current extreme weather conditions.

The sheriff’s office said other resources put in to assist with the search were Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Placer County Search and Rescue, Nevada County Search and Rescue, Butte County Search and Rescue, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol and Northstar California Ski Patrol.

The social media posts featured videos and pictures of the search efforts.

The search for the 43-year-old Truckee resident was hampered by harsh weather conditions that dropped more than four feet of fresh snow. Angelotta was last seen at the Northstar ski resort on Saturday morning.

The investigations have shown that Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstockbahn at around 11.30 a.m. No other activity has been recorded on his passport since then.

“Seekers responded and combed the mountain and surrounding areas despite the extreme weather,” said the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. “Rescuers were on their search with skis, snowmobiles and a snowcat. They were confronted with a high risk of avalanches, strong winds, whiteout thunderstorms, icy temperatures and heavy snow loads. “
