Paul Pelosi, the husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is recovering from surgery after he was attacked by a hammer-wielding intruder at the couple’s home in San Francisco.

Mr Pelosi, 82, suffered a fractured skull and injuries to his right arm and hands. He is “receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,” spokesman Drew Hammill said.

The attack on the spouse of the third-most senior politician in the United States has sparked concerns about political violence ahead of the midterm elections on 8 November.

The suspect, David Depape, 42, is said to have tried to tie Mr Pelosi up and demanded to know “where’s Nancy?”, according to reports.

US President Joe Biden described the attack as “despicable” and denounced a corrosive political climate for contributing to violence. “Enough is enough is enough,” he said during a speech in Philadelphia. “Every person of good conscience needs to clearly and unambiguously stand up against the violence in our politics, regardless of what your politics are.”

In the hours following the attack, the US government put out a bulletin to law enforcement across the nation warning of a “heightened threat” of domestic violent extremism against candidates and election workers driven by individuals with “ideological grievances”.

The attack on Mr Pelosi is being treated as attempted murder. A motive has not yet been fully determined, but San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the attack was “intentional” and not random.

Mrs Pelosi – who was on the other side of the country in Washington DC at the time of the assault – flew back to see her husband in hospital.

A spokesman for the senior Democrat said Mr Pelosi had been attacked in the early hours of Friday morning “by an assailant who acted with force, and threatened his life while demanding to see the Speaker”.

San Francisco Police are leading the investigation and are working with the FBI and US Capitol Police.

Ms Pelosi, the highest-ranking Democrat in Congress, was in Washington at the time of the assault, according to US Capitol Police.

The suspected attacker has espoused extreme right-wing views on social media, including conspiracy theories about Covid-19, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing law-enforcement officials.

He also allegedly posted videos from Donald Trump ally and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, as well as theories on the 6 January attack on the Capitol.

DePape also posted links to YouTube videos with titles like “Democrat FARCE Commission to Investigate January 6th Capitol Riot COLLAPSES in Congress!!!” and “Global Elites Plan To Take Control Of YOUR Money! (Revealed)”.

Politicians from both sides of the political divide have condemned the attack.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a fellow Democrat, said in a statement: “What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act.

“I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said he was “horrified and disgusted” by the attack on Mr Pelosi.

He tweeted: “Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

The White House said President Joe Biden was “praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family”.

There is mounting concern about the safety of politicians in the US almost two years after a mob of pro-Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in January, 2021.

Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was violently assaulted inside his home Friday morning in San Francisco, according to a Pelosi spokesman and local police.

An assailant broke into the home and asked “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?” according to an NBC News source.

Officers arrived at the home to perform a welfare check and found the suspect and Pelosi both having one hand on a single hammer. Police then saw the suspect attack Pelosi, 82, with the hammer, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said during a news conference Friday. Scott added Pelosi was struck at least once in the attack.

The officers disarmed the suspect, Scott said.

“This was not a random attack. This was intentional. And it’s wrong,” Scott said. “Our elected officials are here to do the business of their cities, their counties, and their states, and this nation. Their families don’t sign up for this — to be harmed. And it’s wrong.”

Pelosi was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he is recovering from surgery on his head, a source at the hospital with firsthand knowledge says. Previous reports citing a hospital source said he was undergoing brain surgery.

“Mr. Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Pelosi, said in a statement. “His doctors expect a full recovery.”

Secret Service agents and Capitol Police were staged at the hospital.

The suspect was identified as 42-year-old David Depape, and is being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and several other felonies, Scott said. Depape was taken to the hospital in police custody.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not at the San Francisco home at the time of the invasion and assault. She was in Washington, DC under her protective detail, according to her office. The speaker arrived in San Francisco just before 3:30 pm

According to a family member traveling with Nancy Pelosi, Depape was trying to tie up Paul Pelosi “until Nancy got home,” and when officers arrived at the scene, he said “we are waiting for Nancy.”

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott provides an update on the Paul Pelosi attack investigation.

When Depape wasn’t looking, Pelosi managed to dial 911, the family member said. The family is hoping there is a recording of the conversation to provide more information.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation,” read a statement from Pelosi’s office.

“Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The speaker was not in San Francisco at the time,” the statement read.

“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”

San Francisco police said it responded to the scene in the 2600 block of Broadway for a home break-in. The Capitol Police, the FBI and San Francisco police are conducting a joint investigation into the home invasion assault.

Pelosi’s home was vandalized last January, just a few days before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, as was the home of then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Pelosi’s garage door was defaced with phrases including “$2K,” “Cancel rent!” and “We want everything!” This came several days after Congress failed to approve a measure to increase coronavirus stimulus checks to $2,000.

Meanwhile, politicians from both sides of the aisle took to social media to condemn the attack.

Political Analyst Larry Gerston says there’s definitely a question whether the assault on Nancy Pelosi’s husband at the couple’s San Francisco home is politically motivated.

SAN FRANCISCO — When Paul Pelosi returned to the family’s San Francisco home, he paused at the doorway where he was violently attacked and injured in a hammer attack by a politically motivated intruder.

In a lengthy interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talked about the extent of her husband’s injuries and long journey to recovering both physically and emotionally.

With her voice filled with emotion during the interview, Pelosi said she has not talked about the Oct. 28 assault with her husband.

“We haven’t quite had that conversation, because any revisiting of it is really traumatizing,” she said. “It was hard, and one of the hardest things all week was to go back into the house for him – in the entrance, which is of course where he was hit.”

“The doctors had said, you know, we don’t want him to watch the news,” she continued. “We don’t want him to be revisiting a lot of this, at least not now, because it will add to the trauma. And the operation was a success, but it’s only one part of the recovery. The dramatic, drastic head injury . It takes some time.”

David DePape is charged with six counts relating to the attack, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, false imprisonment and threatening the family member of a public official. He has pleaded not guilty to all state charges.

Federal prosecutors have charged him with attempted kidnapping and assault.

Revisiting the attack also brings a great deal of emotional pain for Nancy Pelosi, herself.

“For me, this is really the hard part because Paul wasn’t the target,” she told Cooper. “And he’s the one who’s paying the price, I mean we all are, but he’s the one who’s really paying the price. But it really – it’s really sad, because it is a flame that was fueled by misinformation and all the rest of that , which is most unfortunate.”

DePape confronted Paul Pelosi in a bedroom, asking repeated, ‘Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?’ Still groggy from being suddenly awoken, Pelosi responded, ‘She’s not here.’

When Pelosi asked DePape why he wanted to see his wife, the suspect answered according to court documents:

“‘Well, she’s number two in line for the presidency, right?'” When Mr. Pelosi agreed, Defendant responded that they are all corrupt and ‘we’ve got to take them all out.'”

San Francisco police said officers responded to the 2600 block of Broadway for a 911 call of a home break-in at approximately 2:27 am

When San Francisco police officers arrived, Pelosi and DePape were wrestling over a hammer.

“When officers arrived on scene, they encountered an adult male and Mrs. Pelosi’s husband, Paul,” SFPD Chief Bill Scott told reporters. “Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer. The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it.”

“Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid,” he added.

The assault left Paul Pelosi with severe head and arm injuries.

“(The head injury was) on the top in two places,” Nancy Pelosi said of the skull fracture. “And that’s pretty awful. That’s pretty awful. But the good news was when he came – when he had the operation, and we were blessed by the health care professionals at San Francisco General. They told us it had not pierced his brain, which is what could be deadly or worse.”

“What they had to do was they had to take off the skull, reshape it, put it back so it didn’t scratch or pierce the brain. It’s pretty – it’s a pretty serious operation… Always concern, the hematomas, all the rest of that.”

Then came a short-lived light moment in the early hours.

“My son Paul told me that when he – see, I got on the plane right away to go, to come to California, but he was now out of the operation,” Nancy Pelosi said. “And Paul [Jr.] said, ‘Mommy’s on her way here,’ and Paul said – the first thing he said, ‘Oh your mother is going to be very happy, because the Ravens won last night.'”

Nancy Pelosi was born and raised in Baltimore.

When asked how her husband was doing, Nancy Pelosi answered:

“He’s doing okay. He is – it’s a long haul. But he knows he has to pace himself. He’s, he’s such a gentleman that he’s not complaining. But he’s also knowing that it’s a long haul. He’s so concerned about the traumatic effect on our children and our grandchildren. And we’re concerned about the traumatic effect on him.”

A federal indictment is handed up by a federal grand jury against David DePape. He is charged with attempted kidnapping as well as assault. Combined, the two charges carry a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison. The indictment reveals that the encounter between Pelosi, DePape, and police at the front door of the home, when Pelosi was struck with the hammer, unfolded within 15 seconds. The indictment says that DePape planned to use Speaker Pelosi to lure another individual he had targeted. Electronic evidence seized at DePape’s Richmond home shows that he had researched an address for that target, but the indictment did not identify the target by name. An additional target is also mentioned, but not named.

A preliminary hearing date for suspect David DePape is set for Dec. 14 on the state charges leveled against him.

For the first time, Nancy Pelosi speaks about the attack on her husband, in a video update posted to her Team Pelosi YouTube page. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words, your prayers and your good wishes for Paul,” the speaker says. “It’s going to be a long haul, but he will be well. And it’s so tragic how it happened. But, nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by family, so that’s a wonderful thing.”

Six days after the attack, Paul Pelosi is released from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull, received treatment for injuries to his right arm as well as both hands, and is expected to recover. He is now home surrounded by his family who request privacy.”

Immigration officials say the suspect, David DePape, is in the US illegally and has overstayed a visa from Canada. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against DePape. The detainer is unlikely to have an immediate impact since deportations often happen after criminal cases are resolved.

US Capitol Police had cameras outside of the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but they were not monitored, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. According to the sources, Capitol Police saw the flash of police lights on the camera, rewound the video, and saw the break-in.

Former neighbors of David DePape in the city of Richmond talk about the man they knew. They say he often worked as a handyman and describe him as quiet.

David DePape makes his first court appearance in this case in order to plead not guilty to six charges against him. This case is heard in a San Francisco courtroom and concerns charges at a state, not federal, level. DePape is being held without bail. He is being represented by public defender Adam Lipson.

A federal affidavit reveals graphic details about what unfolded inside the Pelosi house in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 2022. It says Pelosi called 911 at 2:23 am to report a stranger inside his house. SFPD officers arrived at 2:31 am and encountered Pelosi and DePape inside the house, each with a hand on a hammer. “DEPAPE pulled the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and swung the hammer, striking Pelosi in the head. Officers immediately went inside and were able to restrain DEPAPE. While officers were restraining DEPAPE, Pelosi appeared to be unconscious on the ground.”

Pelosi spoke with SFPD officers while in the ambulance on his way to the hospital. He told officers he had never seen DePape before he woke him up and “stated he wanted to talk to ‘Nancy’.”

The affidavit describes an interview DePape gave SFPD: “DEPAPE stated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her. If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the ‘truth,’ he would let her go, and if she ‘lied,’ he was going to break ‘her kneecaps’…DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions.” DePape says he broke into the house through a glass door by using a hammer. “DEPAPE had zip ties, tape, rope, and at least one hammer with him that morning. The evidence further shows that DEPAPE assaulted Mr. Pelosi with DEPAPE’s own hammer.”

The affidavit also mentions a witness who was working as a private security guard at a nearby house. The witness “saw an individual in all black, carrying a large black bag on his back, walking near the Pelosi residence” and soon after the witness “heard what sounded like banging on either a door or car and then heard the sirens within a minute or two.”

David DePape, the man suspected of attacking Paul Pelosi, is released from the hospital and booked into San Francisco jail. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during his arrest. He’s due in court for his first appearance Nov. 1.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s office half announces a dozen felony charges against DePape including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and threatening the life or serious bodily harm to a public official. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says the six felony charges carry sentences of 13 years to life in prison. DePape also faces federal charges including assault on the immediate family member of a federal official, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He was also charged with the attempted kidnapping of a federal official, which carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The suspect is arrested and also hospitalized. He is identified as 42-year-old David DePape. His current address is in Richmond, but he has past connections to the Berkeley art crowd and was involved in nude protests in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — In the middle of the night, a man broke into the San Francisco home belonging to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and attacked her husband, Paul, with a hammer. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old David DePape, was arrested. The case resulted in multiple charges on both a state and federal level and a closer look at security for American politicians and their families.

Here is a timeline of the events that began with the attack on Oct. 28, 2022.

Nov 9, 2022

A federal indictment is handed up by a federal grand jury against David DePape. He is charged with attempted kidnapping as well as assault. Combined, the two charges carry a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison. The indictment reveals that the encounter between Pelosi, DePape, and police at the front door of the home, when Pelosi was struck with the hammer, unfolded within 15 seconds. The indictment says that DePape planned to use Speaker Pelosi to lure another individual he had targeted. Electronic evidence seized at DePape’s Richmond home shows that he had researched an address for that target, but the indictment did not identify the target by name. An additional target is also mentioned, but not named.

A preliminary hearing date for suspect David DePape is set for Dec. 14 on the state charges leveled against him.

For the first time, Nancy Pelosi speaks about the attack on her husband, in a video update posted to her Team Pelosi YouTube page. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words, your prayers and your good wishes for Paul,” the speaker says. “It’s going to be a long haul, but he will be well. And it’s so tragic how it happened. But, nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by family, so that’s a wonderful thing.”

Six days after the attack, Paul Pelosi is released from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull, received treatment for injuries to his right arm as well as both hands, and is expected to recover. A statement from Nancy Pelosi says, “Paul remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence. He is now home surrounded by his family who request privacy.”

Immigration officials say the suspect, David DePape, is in the US illegally and has overstayed a visa from Canada. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against DePape. The detainer is unlikely to have an immediate impact since deportations often happen after criminal cases are resolved.

US Capitol Police had cameras outside of the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but they were not monitored, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. According to the sources, Capitol Police saw the flash of police lights on the camera, rewound the video, and saw the break-in.

Former neighbors of David DePape in the city of Richmond talk about the man they knew. They say he often worked as a handyman and describe him as quiet.

David DePape makes his first court appearance in this case in order to plead not guilty to six charges against him. This case is heard in a San Francisco courtroom and concerns charges at a state, not federal, level. DePape is being held without bail. He is being represented by public defender Adam Lipson.

A federal affidavit reveals graphic details about what unfolded inside the Pelosi house in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 2022. It says Pelosi called 911 at 2:23 am to report a stranger inside his house. SFPD officers arrived at 2:31 am and encountered Pelosi and DePape inside the house, each with a hand on a hammer. “DEPAPE pulled the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and swung the hammer, striking Pelosi in the head. Officers immediately went inside and were able to restrain DEPAPE. While officers were restraining DEPAPE, Pelosi appeared to be unconscious on the ground.”

Pelosi spoke with SFPD officers while in the ambulance on his way to the hospital. He told officers he had never seen DePape before he woke him up and “stated he wanted to talk to ‘Nancy’.”

The affidavit describes an interview DePape gave SFPD: “DEPAPE stated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her. If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the ‘truth,’ he would let her go, and if she ‘lied,’ he was going to break ‘her kneecaps’…DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions.” DePape says he broke into the house through a glass door by using a hammer. “DEPAPE had zip ties, tape, rope, and at least one hammer with him that morning. The evidence further shows that DEPAPE assaulted Mr. Pelosi with DEPAPE’s own hammer.”

The affidavit also mentions a witness who was working as a private security guard at a nearby house. The witness “saw an individual in all black, carrying a large black bag on his back, walking near the Pelosi residence” and soon after the witness “heard what sounded like banging on either a door or car and then heard the sirens within a minute or two.”

october 31, 2022

David DePape, the man suspected of attacking Paul Pelosi, is released from the hospital and booked into San Francisco jail. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during his arrest. He’s due in court for his first appearance Nov. 1.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s office half announces a dozen felony charges against DePape including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and threatening the life or serious bodily harm to a public official. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says the six felony charges carry sentences of 13 years to life in prison. DePape also faces federal charges including assault on the immediate family member of a federal official, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He was also charged with the attempted kidnapping of a federal official, which carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

october 29, 2022

Nancy Pelosi releases her first statement about the attack. In a post on Twitter, the House Speaker thanks people for their concern about her husband, Paul, saying “Thank you for your prayers for my husband and our family.” Paul Pelosi remains hospitalized.

David DePape’s former partner talks with ABC7 News and shares her concerns about DePape’s mental health issues. Oxane Taub, who goes by the name Gyspy, was a well-known local nudist activist who is currently imprisoned. The two have children together.

october 28, 2022

Paul Pelosi is attacked inside his San Francisco home and hit with a hammer. His wife, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was not home at the time of the attack. Outside their Pacific Heights house, broken glass is clearly visible by an exterior door.

Paul Pelosi, who is 82 years old, is admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and undergoes surgery to repair a skull fracture. He also has serious injuries to his right arm and both hands. A spokesman for Nancy Pelosi says doctors expect a full recovery. She arrives around 4 pm after flying in from Washington, DC

The suspect is arrested and also hospitalized. He is identified as 42-year-old David DePape. His current address is in Richmond, but he has past connections to the Berkeley art crowd and was involved in nude protests in San Francisco.

The husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was attacked during an early-morning break-in at the couple’s San Francisco home, her office said Friday.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” Drew Hammill, a spokesman for the speaker, said in a statement. “The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.”

An initial report says that the suspect used a hammer in the attack, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk freely about the incident.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said.

The US Capitol Police said in a statement that it is assisting the FBI and San Francisco police in an investigation of the break-in and attack.

“Special Agents with the USCP’s California Field Office quickly arrived on scene, while a team of investigators from the Department’s Threat Assessment Section was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and the San Francisco Police with a joint investigation,” US Capitol Police said.

Nancy Pelosi, who has been fundraising and campaigning with Democrats around the country, was in Washington at the time with her protective detail, according to Capitol police. The speaker, who is second in line to the presidency, has a security detail provided by US Capitol Police.

The speaker had been in Zagreb, Croatia, earlier this week for a forum on Crimea, returned to Washington to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and was in San Francisco on Wednesday morning for an event at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Because he is not an elected official, Paul Pelosi does not receive protection from the United States Capitol Police or any other entity when he is not with the speaker, according to three people familiar with the security protocol.

President Biden spoke to Nancy Pelosi to “express his support after this horrible attack,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

“The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family,” Jean-Pierre said. “He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (DN.Y.) said in a statement that he expressed his concern in a call with the speaker.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act,” Schumer said. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

In a tweet, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wrote, “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who was recently threatened at her home, said Speaker Pelosi “was very sympathetic to the need to get additional security for members.”

“She really recognizes the changed threat to members in this environment and particularly after January 6,” Jayapal said, referring to the 2021 attack on the Capitol.

Jayapal added that the need for security for family members “has been an ongoing concern” because family members don’t receive protection, and that it has been a challenge because such arrangements must be approved in the appropriations process by both parties.

Paul Pelosi owns Financial Leasing Services, a San Francisco-based real estate and venture capital investment and consulting firm. He met his wife while studying at Georgetown University. She was a student at Trinity College at the time. The Pelosis have been married for 59 years and have five children.

Paul Pelosi was in the news in August when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and causing injury stemming from a May car crash in Northern California.

In 2021, the Pelosi home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood was spray-painted and a pig’s head was left on the sidewalk in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day. The incident was apparently in criticism of Congress over insufficient coronavirus pandemic relief.

SAN FRANCISCO — Nancy Pelosi has made two very different, almost irreconcilable statements about her political future.

In 2018, she pledged that 2022 would be her last year as House Democratic leader, acceding to a term limit to quell an uprising and secure a second stint as speaker. In January, she announced she was running for another two-year term in the House.

With the House’s passage of the sweeping measure to address climate change and prescription drug prices on Friday — “a glorious day for us,” Ms. Pelosi beamed — and her China-defying trip to Taiwan serving as a diplomatic career capstone, the question of what comes next for Ms. Pelosi is only intensifying.

Will she press to stay on as speaker if Democrats somehow hold the House? Or, if Republicans take control, will she simply retire?

She could break her 2018 pledge and seek to remain Democratic leader in the minority. Those close to her describe only one option as inconceivable: a demotion to the backbench.

Ms. Pelosi, 82, has avoided discussing her plans past November and declined to be interviewed. A spokesman, Drew Hammill, issued the same, terse statement he has offered previously: “The speaker is not on a shift,” he said. “She’s on a mission.”

Some clues to Ms. Pelosi’s future may be found closer to her home in San Francisco — where the tantalizing possibility of the city’s first open congressional seat since the fall of the Soviet Union has become the political talk of the town.

Would-be candidates, labor leaders, political strategists, donors and activists are already busy plotting what a race to succeed her would look like — albeit almost entirely in secret, to avoid antagonizing Ms. Pelosi, who has made plain she wants to retire on in their own terms.

“This is very much the campaign that shall not be named,” Dan Newman, a San Francisco-based Democratic operative, said of the early jostling. “Nancy Pelosi is a force of nature, and no one wants to appear in any way disrespectful or dismissive.”

In interviews, more than a dozen officials said local Democrats were preparing for the possibility that Ms. Pelosi could resign rather than stay and hand the gavel to a Republican. That would trigger a snap special election in San Francisco, held within 150 days — a sprint for what, given the city’s politics, could amount to a de facto lifetime appointment to Congress.

Adding to the intrigue: One potential successor is Ms. Pelosi’s daughter Christine Pelosi, a party activist and Democratic National Committee executive committee member who serves as an adviser to her mother, has written a book about her and often accompanies her to local union halls, speeches and parades. She slings her opinions online from a Twitter handle, @sfpelosi, that at a glance could be confused for one her mother might use.

Wrapped up in the elder Ms. Pelosi’s decision and its timing are intertwined questions of power, legacy and dynasty, and how fully a barrier-breaking, notoriously competitive public figure can stage-manage her exit.

There is also Washington politics: Ms. Pelosi called herself “a bridge to the next generation of leaders” four years ago, signaling her desire that her departure coincide with those of her fellow-octogenarian lieutenants, Representatives Steny Hoyer, 83, and James Clyburn , 82. Neither has agreed.

In San Francisco, similarly, the Pelosi name remains beloved, but there is no guarantee of a controlled succession.

A popular state senator, Scott Wiener, whose district overlaps Ms. Pelosi’s, is widely seen as laying the groundwork for a campaign. Mr. Wiener spent nearly $2.5 million on his re-election and has been wooing supporters under the guise of good politics, though his ambitions to become San Francisco’s first openly gay congressman are an open secret.

In an interview at a Brazilian pastry shop, the 6-foot-7-inch Mr. Wiener refused even to broach the possibility of a post-Pelosi era. “The longer she stays, the better for our country,” he said. “I’m on Team Nancy.”

It was a comment befitting what Tony Winnicker, a longtime local Democratic strategist, called “the first rule of wanting to run for Nancy Pelosi’s seat.”

“You never talk about it in a way that suggests Nancy will ever leave,” he said.

Christine Pelosi, too, declined to comment.

As former chair of the women’s caucus of the state Democratic Party, the younger Ms. Pelosi, 56, has been outspoken in fighting sexual harassment.

Increasingly, she and Mr. Wiener, 52, are crisscrossing at local events, like a Pride breakfast where he and the elder Ms. Pelosi both delivered speeches. “This has been a family affair for us for more than 30 years,” Nancy Pelosi said, recognizing her daughter’s presence. (She also acknowledged Mr. Wiener.)

This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause.

Just as she has in Washington, where she has outlasted a generation of potential male successors — Rahm Emanuel, Chris Van Hollen and Joseph Crowley among them — Ms. Pelosi has kept an array of ambitious local officials on ice since 1987.

Willie Brown, the former San Francisco mayor, said that those planning House campaigns were smart to get started, even if somewhat premature. In an interview over lunch, he speculated that Ms. Pelosi would prove a powerful ally to her daughter, eventually.

“If her mother is not around, Christine would be a formidable candidate,” Mr. Brown said. “Because her mother would make her a formidable candidate.”

Few expect the speaker to reveal her intentions until November. Doing so any sooner could reduce her sway over the razor-thin House Democratic majority, not to mention her power as a fund-raiser. She hosts a major donor retreat in Napa next weekend.

Whenever her house seat opens up, it will be a chance to not just succeed the first female speaker in United States history but to also represent a city that has long punched above its weight in national politics, despite a population smaller than that of Columbus, Ohio.

Today, the No. 2 and no. 3 officials in the presidential line of succession — Vice President Kamala Harris, once the city’s attorney district, and Ms. Pelosi — both cut their teeth politically in San Francisco. Democrats who emerge in the city’s notoriously cutthroat liberal politics, from Gov. Gavin Newsom to Senator Dianne Feinstein to Ms Pelosi, have found ways to place the oft-warring factions of the Democratic Party.

“The fight gives you muscle,” said Debra Walker, an artist and activist who has served as the president of the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club. Ms. Walker was appointed in June to the San Francisco Police Commission, as Mayor London Breed sought to defuse a blowup between the police department and the city’s annual Pride Parade organizers, who had sought to bar officers from marching in uniform.

Even among Ms. Pelosi’s friends and allies, some have wondered if Christine Pelosi, who wrote a book on campaigning but has never run for office herself, is sufficiently prepared.

“I would rather see Christine start at a state level rather than Congress,” said Joe Cotchett, a major Democratic donor and family friend.

Mr. Cotchett expected Nancy Pelosi to support her daughter, up to a point. “Do I think that Nancy will push her? Emotionally, she’s her daughter,” he said. “But I don’t think Nancy is the type of person who would step in and attempt to block anyone from running.”

If the elder Ms. Pelosi is known for her deft relationship management, that has been less true for Christine, whose years as an activist have included pressing for DNC resolutions — trying to ban corporate contributions, demanding a 2020 climate debate — sometimes to the exasperation of party officials.

Her last name has insulated her from public criticism, but hidden frustrations have mounted, according to a half dozen officials on both coasts.

She antagonized the Newsom team, for instance, when she suggested during the 2021 recall that Mr. Newsom should step down if he looked likely to lose. Publicly, she sought to undercut Mr. Newsom’s central strategy of labeling the recall as a Republican power grab. Privately, she was directly texting Mr. Newsom to complain about his tactics, according to two people briefed on the messages she sent.

Mr. Newsom defeated the recall in a landslide.

In a city where politics is often personal and fractious, Mr. Wiener has accumulated critics, too.

“People talk about it all the time,” Mike Casey, president of the San Francisco Labor Council, said of the race to succeed Ms. Pelosi. “But mostly, like, who don’t we want. Like Scott Wiener has really gotten on the trades’ and a number of our bad side.”

And while Mr. Wiener and Ms. Pelosi are progressives by any national metric, neither would necessarily satisfy the city’s ideological purists, a wing that could field a candidate, too. “I haven’t ruled it out,” said Jane Kim, a 45-year-old former supervisor and executive director of the California Working Families Party.

Jen Snyder, a San Francisco-based strategist who works with progressives, could summon little enthusiasm for a Pelosi-Wiener contest.

“It will be Mothra versus Godzilla,” Ms. Snyder said. “I guess I’ll be on the sidelines eating popcorn.”

Another possible candidate is Ms. Breed, the first Black woman to serve as mayor. She has indicated she is uninterested in a congressional run, according to people close to her.

“I can tell you as a friend of hers, she’s not,” said Lee Houskeeper, a local public relations veteran, who joined Mr. Brown for the lunch interview.

“I can tell you as a friend of hers, she better be,” Mr Brown interjected.

Clint Reilly, who managed Ms. Pelosi’s 1987 congressional campaign and has known her family since, declined at first to talk. “Leave me alone!” he insisted. “They won’t be happy with anything I say!”

But Mr. Reilly, an investor who now owns The San Francisco Examiner, agreed to talk, including about how Ms. Pelosi won that first race, defeating a gay rival, Harry Britt, who ran to her left, in a multicandidate scrum.

Her prophetic slogan: “A voice that will be heard.”

If Democrats loose in November, Mr. Reilly said, “most people would call it at that time.” But not necessarily Ms. Pelosi. “She loves the game,” he said. “She hates to lose.”

“How it ends?” hey mused “I don’t think even she knows the answer.”
