Joe Rosswho began the Washington Nationals' road trip with a 9.85 ERA in 19 games, one start and 24 2⁄3 innings pitched this season, was scoreless through 11 1⁄3 after going six innings on the mound in the series finale with San Francisco's Giants at Oracle Park.

Ross held the Giants to two walks and three hits in the scoreless appearance and threw 99 pitches, including 59 strikes, which ultimately led to a 4-1 victory that gave the Nationals a sweep of the three-game set in the City blessed bay.

Horse against the Giants: Joe Ross He walked five batters last time out but held the Arizona D-Backs from the field for over 5 1⁄3 IP and allowed just one hit in a 3-0 win at Chase Field.

In two starts prior to today in 2019, the 26-year-old right-hander was (1-1) batting .237/.356/.316 with a 2.53 ERA, seven walks, nine strikeouts and a line in 10 1⁄3 IP , after struggling in a backup role earlier in the season and being sent to the ground and stretched out.

To build on his performance against the Diamondbacks, Ross appeared today against the Giants in the series finale in San Francisco, throwing four scoreless throws on 61 pitches, working to a 4-0 lead and limiting the home team to one hit and a walk.

Kevin Pillar And Brandon Crawford hit back-to-back singles against Ross in the first two pitches of the fifth. Pillar went to third on a one-out fly ball up the middle Brandon Beltand a two-out walk to Austin Slater preloaded the bases Mike Yastrzemskiwhich popped out just to the right and secured third in Ross' fifth scoreless frame.

A 13-pitch, 1-2-3 sixth capped Ross' outing, leaving him with 99 total pitches and a total of 11 1⁄3 scoreless innings on the mound in two starts on the Nationals' road trip…

Joe Ross's line: 6.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 2BB, 5KS, 99P, 59S, 5/5GO/FO.

Anderson vs. the Nats: Shaun AndersonThe 24-year-old was actually drafted in the 40th round in 2013 by the Nats but didn't sign, and he was eventually drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2016, signed, and then traded to the Giants in July 2017 in a deal for Eduardo Nunez.

Anderson was called up to make his MLB debut in mid-May, and heading into today's series finale against the Nationals at Oracle Park, the right-hander (3-3) had made 15 starts, posting a 5.08 ERA, 28 walks, 53 Ks, 11 HRs allowed and a .293/.353/.467 line against it in 79 2⁄3 IP.

Two hits in a row Trea Turner And Adam Eaton started Anderson's first career game against the Nationals, and both runners moved up by one Anthony Rendon Groundout to second before Turner hit an RBI groundout from Juan Soto1-0.

Eaton hit a single to start the top of the third inning and Juan Soto went down with one before Gerardo Parra hit an 0-1 fastball the other way for a three-run home run that made the Nationals 4-0. Parras 7th, doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.

Power on + JuOn SotOBP: Before today's game, the leader of the Nationals Trea Turner had a 15-game on-base streak in which he was 20 for 62 (.323/.400/.548) with three doubles, one triple, three home runs, six RBIs, eight walks and 12 runs scored 15 games.

Turner extended his streak to 16 in a row with a runaway single in the first at-bat of the game and scored the Nationals' only run in the first inning.

Juan Soto came into the finale at Oracle Park with a 13-game on-base streak in which he was 12 for 46 (.261/.417/.565) with two doubles, four home runs and 13 walks.

Soto successfully singled out Giants right winger Shaun Anderson the first time around and managed a 14-game streak on base the second time around.

BULLPEN ACTION: Andrew Suarezan unsigned 2014 second-round pick of the Nationals took the mound for the Giants in the fourth round and allowed back-to-back 2-out hits Turner and Eaton, who were 5-6 overall at the time. Suarez scored Anthony Rendon to load the bases with two outs*, but got out of the jam when Steven Duggar made a diving catch in the gap in right-center to rob Juan Soto of additional bases. Still 4-0 Nats.

Suarez was eliminated from the Nationals in the fifth game of the series.

Sam Coonrod came into the game at the start of the sixth for the Giants, with the score still 4-0 in favor of the Nats, and eliminated the Nationals in order.

Williams Jerez worked around a single by Asdrúbal Cabrera to secure a scoreless eighth-quarter lead.

Hiking serum reached the round of 16 for the Nationals and earned a two-out single by Buster Posey and a double by Evan Longoria in a scoreless 26-pitch frame.

Reyes Moronta gave up a one-out double to center off a pinch hitter Andrew Stevenson in the bottom of the ninth, but failed as the only runner to reach base.

Sanchez vs San Francisco:

Aaron Sanchez had surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder, which kept him from pitching in the majors in 2020’s 60-game COVID campaign, and the right-handed starter had a biceps issue which limited him to just nine games (seven starts ) and 35 1⁄3 IP with the San Francisco Giants in 2021, after he signed a 1-year/$4M deal with the club.

This time around, Sanchez, 29, got a 1-year/$2M contract from Washington (which includes up to $4M in performance bonuses), and he started the season at Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals’ system, but came back up to the majors to start against the Giants last weekend in the nation’s capital, giving up six hits, a walk, and four earned runs in 4 1⁄3 IP.

“I just stayed on the attack all day, really,” he said after his 2022 debut. “That’s my game. Try to get guys on their heels, and then when they start swinging, then you mix it up, just didn’t fall my way today.”

“He’s a ground ball guy, and he throws a lot of ground balls. When he’s good, that’s what he does. So I was definitely pleased by that, they found some holes, but he threw the ball well,” manager Davey Martinez said following a 5-2 loss to the Giants in DC

Tonight at San Francisco’s Oracle Park, Sanchez took the mound with a 1-0 lead, courtesy of Juan Soto, who homered in the top of the first inning, and the starter worked around a 2-out single in a scoreless first, but gave up a two-out single and two-run home run, by Giants’ CF Austin Slater and third baseman Jason Vosler, respectively, in a 16-pitch home-half of the second inning.

Slater singled to start the Giants’ fifth, took third on a one-out single by Joey Bart, and came in on a sac fly by Luis González, which made it a 5-3 game after five innings, with Sanchez up to 71 pitches after the 13 pitch bottom of the inning.

With the Nationals up 9-3 after five and a half, and a long top of the fifth inning, the visiting team went to the pen…

Aaron Sanchez’s line: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 Ks, 1 HR, 71 P, 51 S, 5/3 GO/FO.

Wood vs Washington:

In his third start of the season for the Giants, with whom he signed a 2-year/$24M deal this past November, after signing on with San Francisco on a 1-year/$3M in 2021, Alex Wood, 31, gave up four hits, a walk, and two earned runs over five innings, in which he struck out five Washington Nationals’ batters in a 77-pitch effort in a 5-2 win for the lefty and his club.

The outing left the lefty with a 2.51 ERA, a 3.69 FIP, four walks, 16 Ks, and .241/.305/.389 line against in 14 1⁄3 IP.

Wood’s ERA was up to 3.07 after he gave up a one-out solo shot to center by Juan Soto, who crushed an 0-2 sinker and hit a 409-foot home run off the Giants’ lefty, his 4th of 2022, 1- 0

Maikel Franco lined a double to left field to lead off the second, and scored two outs later on an RBI line drive to left-center by Victor Robles, who came around on an opposite field single by Alcides Escobar for a 3-0 lead after one and a half.

It was 3-2 in the third when Nelson Cruz walked with one down, took third on a misplay in right on a Josh Bell single, and scored on another double by Franco, 4-2, and then 5-2 on Lane Thomas’s two -out infield single.

Alex Wood’s Line: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 1 HR, 86 P, 62 S, 8/1 GO/FO

Soto Solo:

Juan Soto finished the Nationals’ 10-game homestand 6 for 32 (.188/.366/.281), taking the 23-year-old Nationals’ outfielder from a .289/.460/.553 line on April 17th to . 243/.418/.429, and he hadn’t hit a home run in 48 plate appearances going back to the 16th of April.

The three home runs he’d hit on the season were all solo shots too, for his only 3 RBIs in 21 games this month.

His fourth was a one-out solo shot in the top of the first tonight, 108 miles off the bat, out to center in Oracle Park, 409 feet from home. Wood wants that one back. Soto picked up his first RBI on a non-solo home run later in the game…

Bullpen Action:

Giants’ righty Yunior Marte took over on the mound in the top of the sixth, and gave up a hit by Victor Robles (2 for 3), then hit Alcides Escobar, setting César Hernández up with an RBI opportunity he cashed in with a line drive to right field on a first-pitch slider, 6-3.

Jarlín García came on to face Juan Soto, lefty vs lefty, with two on and one out, and Soto lined a 1-1 changeup off the top of the brick wall in right in the Giants’ home for an RBI hit, and a 7 -3 lead. Hernández scored in the next at-bat on a throwing error on a double play attempt on a Nelson Cruz grounder to first, 8-3, and 9-3 when Cruz took second on the E, and scored on a Josh Bell grounder by third .

Austin Voth gave up back-to-back singles to Wilmer Flores and Brandon Crawford after he took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth, but struck out the next two batters (with a wild pitch moving both runners in scoring position).

Steve Cishek took over with two out, and runners on second and third, and the side-arming right-hander popped Austin Slater up to end the threat. Quiet 9-3.

Sam Clay gave up a solo home run to left by Joey Bart in the bottom of the seventh, 9-4.

Giants’ righty Kervin Castro walked Juan Soto to start the eighth, and Soto took third on a ground-rule double by Josh Bell, then scored on an RBI single to center by Maikel Franco, 10-4. Lane Thomas drove in a run with a single as well, 11-4, and two runs scored on Victor Robles’s fourth hit of the night, (after he had 7 in 52 PAs before today), 13-4, and 14-4 on an Alcides Escobar single.

Francisco Perez gave up a leadoff single and back-to-back, 2-out walks in the eighth inning, and was replaced by Paolo Espino, who got out No. 3 to leave the bases loaded.

Josh Bell and Maikel Franco were both 4 for 6 after singing in back-to-back, 1-out at-bats in the ninth.

Espino came back out in the ninth and wrapped up a long night on the east coast with a scoreless ninth…

Final Score: 14-4 Nats

Nationals now 7-15

Lane Thomas led off on Saturday, after he’d hit mostly 6th or 7th in the Nationals’ lineup over the first few weeks of the 2022 campaign, and Washington skipper Davey Martinez moved César Hernández, who’d led off in each of the 16 games he’d played in early this season, to sixth.

“I just wanted to see if we could jumpstart Lane a little bit,” Martinez said when asked about the moves after the club’s 5-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. “[Thomas] did well for us in the leadoff spot [in 2021]and also too when I talked to Cesar last night [we talked] about letting him relax a little bit and not trying to put so much pressure on him trying to get on base, and just swing the bat. And he did well today, they both did well, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow. I know we got a right-handed pitcher against us, I’m going to look at everything tonight, and then make a decision how we’re going to do that tomorrow.”

Hernández’s 2 for 4 game left him 17 for 73 (.233/.263/.274) so fat this season. Thomas went 1 for 4 with an RBI in the loss, leaving him 9 for 46 (.196/.255/.261) on the year.

Was the experiment on one-time thing, or a change Martinez will stick with for a while to try something new to spark Thomas, Hernández, and the lineup as a whole?

“We might do that,” he said. “Look, Lane hits left-handed pitchers really well, so it was nice to get him up there against the lefties and see if we can get two cracks at them, so I liked it. He hit a couple balls hard today so we’ll see what happens moving forward.”

Thomas’s hit, at the top of the order, was the only one for the Nationals’ first four+ hitters.

Thomas, Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz, and Josh Bell (who was injured and replaced by Lucius Fox early in the game) were a combined 1 for 15 in the loss. How do they turn it around?

“I think we need to just start relaxing … stay up the middle of the field. These guys are going to hit,” Martinez said. “These guys have hit their whole career, they’re going to hit, just don’t try to do too much, stay in the zone, and take your walks. I preach all the time, ‘Hey, take your walks, get on base for the next guy. Don’t chase.’ So, but I got all the confidence in the world that those guys will hit. If we continue to do what we’re doing in the bottom part of our lineup, we’re getting on base, I like that, so it’s just a matter of time before the whole lineup starts clicking, and we start scoring runs again. ”

As for Bell’s injury?

“He’s got right hamstring tightness, so we took him out,” the manager explained.

“He went to get an MRI and we’re waiting for him to get back with the results. I wanted to be cautious. With the other leg, with his knee.”

Bell is not in the lineup today. Maikel Franco is getting the start at first…

Mike Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in DC’s Grant Paulsen back in April 2015 he was not a fan of the designated hitter, and he said then he preferred the National League style of baseball which is a now a thing of the past, since the universal DH was adopted as part of the new CBA this season.

“I hate the DH,” Rizzo said flatly back in ’15. “I always hated the DH. I’d hate to see the DH in the National League.”

Now that it’s here, however?

“It’s here,” Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in DC’s Sports Junkies this past Wednesday.

“So deal with it. live with it We got a good one and we’re happy that we have [Nelson] Cruz as our primary DH, and if we didn’t have him I might have a little different opinion of it.”

Cruz was available to sign when he did in mid-March, at least in part because he waited for a decision on the universal DH in the CBA, so he could have a clear picture of his options if the NL adopted the designated hitter.

“I got a few offers before the lockout,” the 41-year-old, 18-year veteran explained in Spring Training. “But definitely I wanted to explore what was going on after the lockout, from the [standpoint] of the universal DH.”

Manager Davey Martinez has also previously stated his preference for the old NL style of ball, but he too told reporters this week he’s learning to live with it.

“For me, it doesn’t seem all that bad, because we have Nelson Cruz DH-ing for us,” Martinez said. “Which is pretty nice. But, yeah, the game is different because there’s a lot of moving parts when you play National League style, and there’s a lot of different things that you have to do.”

“It has definitely been getting used to,” the fifth-year manager acknowledged, “even though we’ve done it, because we’ve played having to go to the other leagues, and have a DH, but to do it every day, it’s definitely different.”

Cruz was 10 for 51 (.196/.281/.255) with a home run, six walks, and 11 Ks in 13 games and 58 plate appearances going into Wednesday afternoon’s series finale with the Arizona D-backs, but he connected for a two-run home run to the left after Juan Soto walked in front of him.

Cruz’s manager said he saw positive signs from the Nationals’ DH at the plate.

“The one thing I noticed today is he was getting ready really early, he was getting his foot down on time, so I mean for me it’s just a matter of time. This guy is going to hit, we know that, but once he starts doing that he’ll start driving the balls, and you’ll start seeing a lot more balls leaving the park. I mean, when he gets hot it’s a sight to see, so hopefully he’s getting there and getting there soon.”

Cruz went 0 for 3 with a walk in last night’s loss. What will he do today?

The San Francisco Giants (55-32) host the Washington Nationals (42-45) Saturday for the second game of their three-game set at Oracle Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines of BetMGM Sportsbook around the Nationals vs. Giants odds with MLB picks and predictions.

San Francisco won the first game of the series on Friday 5-3 with C Curt Casali fill in well for C Buster Posey by hitting 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and 2 RBIs.

Season streak: Giants lead 3-2.

LHP Jon Lester is Washington’s planned starter. Lester is 2-3 with 5.34 ERA (60 2/3 IP, 36 ER), 1.63 WHIP, 3.9 BB / 9 and 6.1 K / 9 with 13 starts.

Last game: No decision with 3 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 BB and 2 K in Washington’s 7-5 win in San Diego Padres on Monday.

vs. Giants in the current squad: 161 at-bats with a .242 / .313 / .447 slashline, 42/14 K / BB, 8 HR and 19 RBIs.

RHP Anthony DeSclafani makes his 18th start for the Giants. DeSclafani is 9-3 with 2.84 ERA (101 1/3 IP, 32 ER), 1.02 WHIP, 2.5 BB / 9 and 8.3 K / 9 this year.

Last outing: Win, 5-2, with 8 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB and 7 K on Sunday at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

vs. Nationals in the current roster: 159 at-bats with a .239 / .288 / .377 slash line, 39/9 K / BB, 5 HR and 14 RBIs.

Money line: Nationals +165 (bet $ 100 to win $ 165) | Giants -200 (bet $ 200 to win $ 100)

Against spread / ATS: National +1.5 (-115) | Giant -1.5 (-105)

Over under: 8.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

forecast

Giants 6, Nationals 2

Money line (ML)

If you look under the hood of DeSclafani’s home numbers, you’ll find that he’s much better off than his base numbers suggest, and he’s due for a solid home breakout.

For example, DeSclafani has a 4.24 ERA at home and a 2.14 ERA on the road this season, but DeSclafani’s xFIP, K-BB%, and Home Run per nine innings are all better in San Francisco.

However, DeSclafani’s .289 BAbip at home (0.212 BAbip on the go) and 62.1% of the link at home (91.1% LOB% on the go) show that he was simply unlucky in San Francisco.

The opposite is the case with Lester’s home / street splits, as his pitching periphery is much worse away than at home. In fact, Lester has an 8.53 FIP on the road and a minus -1K-BB%.

What I’m getting at is this GIANTS (-200) is a fair price I would bet 1 piece on. If your standard unit is $ 100 I’d bet it GIANTS (-200) to hopefully make a profit of $ 50.

Tread Line / Against the Spread (ATS)

“LEAN” to the GIANT -1.5 (-105) for half a unit because we’re paying a pretty high price for the San Francisco money line.

That being said, the Giants have a winning ATS record at home and as a home favorite, while the Nationals have an ATS record of under 500 as a road underdog.

Over / Under (O / U)

CONSIST Even if Lester’s cracks in the street are terrible and Washington’s bullpen is nothing to brag about because San Francisco’s IL is far too long to have much confidence in the offensive.

Well, that was a blow to the heart for the Washington Nationals.

In the middle of the fourth inning of the series finals against the San Diego Padres, it looked like the Nationals were going to score a much-needed series win against one of the better teams in the Major Leagues.

Then it all revealed itself in one of the most bizarre innings of Max Scherzer’s career as he allowed seven deserved runs, including a grand slam for reliever Daniel Camarena, and the Nationals would lose to a walk-off single by Trent Grisham.

It’s still baffling that it could happen, and for a mug of Scherzer’s kind, too.

Despite the end of the series, a split against the Padres is by no means bad and the Nationals are currently 5-6 in their difficult stretch against teams over 0.500 before the break.

To round off the first half of the season, the Nationals travel up the west coast to face the San Francisco Giants, who still take first place in the stacked National League West.

These two teams haven’t met that long. In mid-June they played a series split in which pitching was the key, with the two offenses coming together in just 11 runs in the four Washington games.

This was the series that really boosted Kyle Schwarber’s historic run in first place before injuring himself and putting the Nationals back to the brink of competition on their run. For the Giants, they’ve gone 14-7 since that streak and are doing pretty well with a 54-32 record.

Here are the facts from Oracle Park ahead of the three-game weekend series …

The schedule

Game one: Friday, July 9th at 9:45 p.m. EDT. TV: MASN 2, Radio: 106.7 The fan

Game two: Saturday, July 10th at 4:05 p.m. EDT. TV: MASN 2, Radio: 106.7 The fan

Game three: Sunday, July 11th at 4:05 p.m. EDT. TV: MASN 2, Radio: 106.7 The fan

Pitching matches

Game one: Paolo Espino (2-2, 2.48 ERA) vs Logan Webb (4-3, 3.86 ERA)

Game two: Jon Lester (2-3, 5.34 ERA) vs Anthony DeSclafani (9-3, 2.84 ERA)

Game three: Erick Fedde (4-5, 4.53 ERA) vs Kevin Gausman (8-3, 1.74 ERA)

Who is hot

Josh Bell: Surrounded by other storylines lately, you will be forgiven for ignoring the fact that Bell has been one of the hottest hitters for both the Nationals and the Seniors lately.

As of May 13th, Bell has posted .310 / .371.548 with nine homers and 32 RBIs, good for a 146 wRC + in that range. For perspective, Juan Soto had a wRC + of 146 in 2018 and 142 in 2019, so Bell has been beating at a similar level to Soto in its first two years since May 13.

He’s been doing even better lately. In his last 18 games, Bell beats .339 / .406 / .597 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. He only hit four of these 18 games and has more walks than strikeouts in this segment, gets seven free passes and only hits six times.

While Kyle Schwarber still doesn’t have a clear return schedule, the Nats needed Bell to grow and produce. So far, pun absolutely intended, he has answered the bell. I couldn’t help it.

Anthony DeSclafani: It’s been a couple of weeks now, but Nationals fans won’t like to be reminded of how DeSclafani dominated them with a two-goal shutout when the Giants hit the nation’s capital in June.

Including that performance, the right-hander is 4-1 in his last five starts with a 1.56 ERA and 2.97 FIP in 34.2 innings while hitting 35 and only walking eight. He did a great job of limiting hard contact against him during that time, with an average exit speed of only 88.8 mph.

After several injury-ridden years with the Cincinnati Reds, DeSclafani finally seems healthy this year and has been an important part of a Giants rotation that has brought her to the top of the NL.

Who is not

Gerardo Parra: In a way, it feels like Parra never really left the Nationals. Despite a season in Japan and the start of the 2021 season in the minors when Baby Shark played when he stepped on the record for his first setback with the team since the World Series, it felt like 2019 again.

Unfortunately, despite some funny moments, Parra wasn’t quite the clutch hit it was two years ago.

By the time he put down a pinch hit knock on Wednesday night, the optimistic outfielder was hitless in his previous 10 at-bats. After the series in San Diego, Parras slash dropped to a disappointing .172 / .226 / .345 in the season with just three extra base hits.

Despite the injury to Schwarber, who opens up a starting place in the outfield, it looks like Parra will lose game time to the red-hot Alcides Escobar, with Josh Harrison moving to left field more frequently.

Despite his obvious intangibles, as the Nationals keep getting healthier, Parra needs to show something special on the field in order to stay in the bank for the long term.

Alex Dickerson: Since he was swapped by the Padres for the Giants in 2019, Dickerson has been a fascinating story that can always be found in and produced in large at-bats.

This year was mixed for Dickerson. After suffering a shoulder impingement in mid-May and a back injury in June, he only returned from the IL a little more than two weeks ago and has not quite produced at the level of his remaining tenure with the Giants.

In 12 games since his return, the outfielder has only played 0.212 / 0.297 / 0.424, despite having a pair of home runs that increase the slugging percentage and keep his wRC + just above the league average of 100 during that time.

During this period, however, it has a miserable strike rate of 32.4% compared to a gait rate of 8.1%.

With injuries to Jaylin Davis and Mike Tauchman, Dickerson must now be an almost everyday player. With his current performance, he could be one of the few weak points in the Giants lineup.

From the opposing shelter

Check out some of the best Giants storylines from our friends at McCovey Chronicles …

Something else to see

Though the Nationals have been getting a little healthier lately, they were inflicted another injury not long before Thursday’s series finale with the Padres when Joe Ross was put on the 10-day injury list with what the team called the “right elbow” became inflammation. “

Ross was originally supposed to start with the Giants at some point during the series but with this new injury he will now miss that start.

The good news is that Nationals manager Dave Martinez doesn’t think it’s serious.

“He felt a bit tight in his forearm, he has a small sore in his right forearm,” Martinez explained. “So we put him on the IL to get some of the swelling and hopefully it’s just a start he’ll miss.

“Let’s see what happens. He was at the doctor yesterday, he wasn’t very worried, so for the next 10 days we will only see how he develops here.”

If Ross can get back on his usual turn right after the All-Star Break, the Nationals could be forced to make some rotation decisions in the not-too-distant future.

Max Scherzer will continue to lead the rotation. Ross and Erick Fedde impressed with more fixed roles in the rotation this year. Beyond that, however, there are question marks about what the Nats should do with their remaining two rotation positions.

The team’s two left-handers, Patrick Corbin and Jon Lester, both have ERAs north of 5:00 and the latter has struggled to get deep into the games. Meanwhile, Paolo Espino has been impressive since joining the rotation and Stephen Strasburg is making further progress in his recovery from nerve irritation in his neck and could soon begin a rehab assignment.

Both Lester and Espino will start this series with the Giants for the Nationals. With rotation spots running out soon, they hope to impress to keep theirs.
