SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP / KPIX) – Millions of online users lost access to popular websites and services when Amazon’s cloud service network went down for hours on Tuesday, even disrupting its own delivery service for its customers. The service provides remote computing services to many governments, universities, and corporations, including The Associated Press.

About five hours after numerous companies and other organizations began reporting issues with Amazon Web Services, the company said in a post on the AWS Status page that it had “mitigated” the underlying problem that caused the outage . Shortly thereafter, it was reported that “many services have already recovered,” but noted that others were still working on a full recovery.

CONTINUE READING: Steph Curry joins the 3-hand record as Warriors Top Blazers

The problem primarily affected Amazon’s web services in the eastern United States, it said. The problems started this morning on the US east coast, said Doug Madory, director of internet analytics at Kentik Inc, a network intelligence company – including Amazon’s own e-commerce operation.

In a statement, Amazon spokesman Richard Rocha confirmed that the AWS failure had also caused problems in Amazon’s warehouse and delivery operations. Rocha added that the company is “working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible”.

It is not just large companies that have felt the effects of the Amazon Web Services shutdown. It is unclear how or if the Amazon outage affected the federal government. The US agency for cybersecurity and infrastructure security said in an email response to questions that it was working with Amazon “to understand the possible impact of this outage on federal agencies or other partners.”

What is certain is that when a great service like this fails, there is a domino effect that can be felt worldwide.

“The reason we’re seeing this more often is because the internet is centralized,” said CNET editor at Large Ian Sherr.

Deliveries were canceled, some apps were unresponsive, and customers trying to book flights with airlines were unable to connect. Those were just a few of the problems.

Students like Kayley Flanagan also felt the effects.

“Some people were in the middle of the finale when it shut down and they couldn’t access it,” Flanagan said.

Platforms like Canvas, which enable online learning and teaching for academic institutions as well, are closed, leaving students desperate and desperate for answers on social media.

“I couldn’t access my homework or the study guides for the final exams,” Flanagan said.

CONTINUE READING: Berkeley Police Department arrests a convicted sex offender for allegedly assaulting teenagers and alleging a police officer

“Thirty, 40 years ago, when we first developed the Internet, the whole idea was to have it decentralized and to have information accessible from anywhere in case there was an attack,” said Sherr.

Scherr believes centralizing the Internet with a handful of companies under control is part of the problem as incidents like Tuesday’s outage with huge economic repercussions are just waiting to happen.

“A lot of companies rely on Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, and as a result, things can go wrong and it can get really bad online,” said Sherr.

Customers trying to book or rebook trips with Delta Air Lines have had problems connecting with the airline. “Delta is working quickly to restore functionality to our AWS-supported phone lines,” said spokesman Morgan Durrant. The airline apologized and urged customers to use their website or mobile app instead.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines said it switched to west coast servers after some airport-based systems were affected by the outage. Customers reported DownDetector, a popular clearinghouse for user outage reporting, still outages, more than three hours after launch. Southwest spokesman Brian Parrish said there had been no major flight disruptions.

Toyota spokesman Scott Vazin said the company’s eastern US region for dealer services has declined. The company has apps that access inventory data, monthly payment calculators, service bulletins, and other items. More than 20 apps were affected.

According to DownDetector, people who tried using Instacart, Venmo, Kindle, Roku, and Disney + have reported problems. The McDonald’s app was also down. But American, United, Alaska and JetBlue airlines were not affected. Kentik posted a 26% decrease in traffic to Netflix, among the top web-based services hit by the outage.

Madory said he didn’t think the failure was anything nefarious. He said a recent accumulation of outages among providers hosting large websites reflects the evolution of the networking industry. “More and more of these outages are the result of the automation and centralization of administration,” he said. “This ultimately leads to failures that are difficult to completely avoid due to operational complexity, but are very effective when they occur.”

Public data access technologist and public data access activist Carl Malamud said the outage shows how much the internet’s original design goal – a distributed network with no central point of failure that makes it resilient to mass disasters like a nuclear attack – has been skewed by big tech.

“If we put everything in one place, be it the cloud from Amazon or the monolith from Facebook, we are violating this basic principle,” said Malamud, who developed the Internet’s first radio station and later an important database for the US Security and Stock Exchange Commission online posed. “We saw when Facebook became the instrument of a massive disinformation campaign, we only saw it today with the failure of Amazon.”

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – The sports world reacts to the comparison of the NFL design process to the slavery of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the six-part Netflix documentary about his life, “Colin in Black & White.”

The former star athlete said potential conscripts will be stabbed, stabbed and examined during the NFL Combine and “no boundary will be respected, no dignity will be left intact”. The episode then shows a group of black rookie football players moving from a training field to an auction block.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Marin County’s goal is to vaccinate most 5 to 11 year olds before the holidays

Lorenzo Neal, who played 16 seasons in the NFL and went through the Combine, said Kaepernick used poor wording.

“If you’re talking about a combine, combine Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, he’s been through it – there were no exceptions,” said Neal. “You judge who you are. They want to make sure they are getting the goods they are getting because they are preparing to pay you a handsome salary. But isn’t that the case when you’re interviewing for a job? “

Neal said that when people talk about slavery, many actually “have no idea what it is like to be beaten, whipped or mutilated”.

“I think if Colin makes that statement and then tries to go back to a place in a league that you feel is treating you like a slave, he just has to be careful using that type of language” said Neal.

Dr. Shaun Fletcher, assistant professor of public relations and sports communications for the state of San Jose, used to work on the other side of combine harvesters.

He worked for the operational side of a college football team and attended combines. He said there is a process of the pre-design process that cameras are not allowed to capture, but he said he still wouldn’t compare it to slavery.

“Hands are stretched to see how wide their hands are, they are moved and pulled in unusual positions,” Fletcher said. “The combine ended when it ended, not in incapacitation (sic) and death. It didn’t end with the lines breaking up. For many it ended in generational wealth. I am sure that many players would tell you in the end, because I have spoken to many of them myself, that they would do it again. “

In his new special, The Closer, comedian Dave Chappelle jokes everyone from Jews to Mike Pence to Martin Luther King Jr. to himself. But he also had the audacity to poke fun at the gay and transgender community to make, and for this Chappelle has (once again!) earned the wrath of intolerant wokescolds.

A transgender activist and showrunner for the Netflix show Dear White People, Jaclyn Moore, slammed Chappelle and said she would boycott Netflix as long as the company “continues to benefit from obviously and dangerously transphobic content”. Meanwhile, the left-wing activist organization GLAAD condemned Chappelle for “mocking trans people and other marginalized communities” and called for his deplatformation. In a sadly typical hit for the liberal media coverage of the special, NPR published an article accusing the black Chappelle of “using white privilege to excuse his own homophobia and transphobia”. (The NPR article also misquoted Chappelle and had to make a correction.)

I shared the story of my transition for @netflix and @ most’s Pride Week. It’s a network that was my home on @DearWhitePeople. I loved working there.

I will not work with them as long as they post and benefit from overtly and dangerously transphobic content.

– Jaclyn Moore (@JaclynPMoore) October 7, 2021

Dave Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities. Negative reviews and viewers loudly condemning his latest special are a message to the industry that audiences do not support the spread of anti-LGBTQ diatribes. Do we agree? https://t.co/yOIyT54819

– GLAAD (@glaad) October 6, 2021

In his new Netflix special, Dave Chappelle tries – and often fails – to justify push-button jokes about gays, transsexuals and feminists, writes NPR critic Eric Deggans.https: //t.co/gG1zFMv2eM

– NPR (@NPR) October 6, 2021

All of these critics need to get a grip. After seeing the insane backlash, I sat down and actually watched the special on Netflix. It’s not hateful; it’s comedy – and good comedy at that. Furthermore, the ultimate message is actually empathy.

Yes, Chappelle is joking at the expense of the gay and transgender community, both in terms of gay rights and the transgender community. He pokes fun at the newfound status that allegedly oppressed gays now have in the culture, and ironically laments the story of a black rapper who was recently “canceled” for anti-gay comments and who, says Chappelle, “shot once” [N-word] and killed him at Walmart, ”but that didn’t hurt his career.

The comedian jokes that rapper DaBaby “slammed the LGBTQ community straight into AIDS”. But Chappelle continues that DaBaby made “an egregious mistake”. He only deplores the fact that “in our country you can shoot and kill” [N-word] … but you shouldn’t hurt the feelings of a gay person! “

As a gay person, I don’t find that offensive. It’s funny! Plus, Chappelle makes fun of the gay community as he makes fun of pretty much every other group during the special.

“You mix up the emotions,” says Chappelle to his critics. “You think I hate gays … what you really see is that I’m jealous of gays. We blacks look at the gay community and say, ‘Damn it, look how well this movement is going. We have been trapped in this predicament for hundreds of years. … How the hell are you making such progress? ‘ I can’t help but believe that if slaves had body oil and booty shorts, we might be free 100 years sooner. “

This last line, which made me cackle audibly in real time, particularly stirred up left-wing critics online. But ironically, these bright reactionaries who can’t take jokes are actually proving Chappelle’s point of view.

“I don’t hate gays at all. … I respect the shit of you – well, not all of you, ”he says later in the special. “I don’t really like these newer gays. Too sensitive, too brittle. These are not the gays I grew up with. … I miss these old school gays, this stonewall [N-words]. They are the ones I respect. They fought for their freedom. “

On this front, Chappelle is absolutely spot on. A generation of older gays experienced real oppression, fought for their rights, endured pseudoscientific anti-gay talk therapy, and more. Too many gays today, at least those who are overrepresented on Twitter and in the media, think they are victims when a comedian makes a joke at their expense. Give me a break.

The comedian goes on to tell how a white gay man called the police during a verbal confrontation. “Gays are minorities until they have to be white again,” he rips off.

For this and other comments, in fact, Chappelle has been accused of overlooking the existence of blacks and gay minorities. But that review is obviously coming from people who haven’t actually seen the special. The comedian goes on almost immediately throughout the story that “a black gay man would never have done that”.

The most controversial part of The Closer, of course, is when Chappelle roasts the transgender community again. And this part of his routine is admittedly outrageous. He jokingly compares the surgically altered genitals of transgender women who are born biologically male with “Impossible P ****”, which refers to the synthetic, vegetarian Impossible burger. He is also defending author JK Rowling, who has come under fire for her allegedly “transphobic” public questioning of the transgender movement on women’s rights issues.

Are these jokes cross-border and shocking? Yes sir. But that’s the point, and these are no more than his jokes about others (including blacks and himself!). It seems to me that if gays and transgender people really believe in equality, they should want to be treated the same way comedians treat any other group of people, and not enjoy special, condescending protection, as if we are more mentally fragile than anyone else.

The real salvation of Chappelle’s routine is that it doesn’t ultimately come from a place of hate or malice. He tells a moving story about a transgender comedian he became friends with, Daphne, who laughed at all of his gay and transgender jokes. He even gave her, an amateur, the opportunity to open for a large event that he was hosting in San Francisco. Chappelle lovingly relates how they bonded through their mutual love for comedy and how all she ever asked him to respect their humanity was.

“Just think I’m human and I’m going through this,” she told him.

“I believe you because it takes you to know you,” he said back.

It’s getting dark here. Chappelle recounts how Daphne stood up for him following the release of his controversial Sticks & Stones special in 2019 when he was widely attacked for being “transphobic”. But the transgender community turned on them and viciously harassed them online. She killed herself a week later.

Chappelle immediately jokes about her suicide. Yes, seriously. But then he realizes that Daphne would have loved the joke and explains that after her death he set up a trust fund for her daughter.

With this dark note, Chappelle hits the real message of his special. The point is that we have to give up our hypocrisy and instead speak honestly about our differences. More than anything, we need to embrace outrage, break in culture, and self-sacrifice.

“Empathy isn’t gay,” says Chappelle. “Empathy is not black. Empathy is bisexual – it has to go both ways. “

Does all of this make Dave Chappelle a “transphobe” or a “fanatic”? Only if you define these words to the point of meaninglessness, so loosely that you include anyone who questions, contradicts or makes fun of the constantly evolving dogma of the awakened left. Bigotry, correctly understood, is not about what jokes you make; It’s about where you are from and whether you have hatred in your heart. And certainly not Chappelle.

Yes, The Closer is desperate at the stifling impact of political correctness on our culture, and in it Chappelle mercilessly mocks many groups of people. But its ultimate message is not bigotry; it’s one of empathy for those who see the world differently, and that’s exactly what the self-righteous critics of Dave Chappelle lack.

According to US media reports, Netflix tried to tighten its rule against sharing passwords with people who live elsewhere on Friday.

Some Netflix users, who appeared to have accessed other people’s accounts, reached out to Twitter to share news of an obvious course of action, as well as posts with a notice letting them know they must be subscribers in order to continue the service to be able to track.

Netflix has included an offer to test the service free of charge for 30 days. This is evident from a copy posted on Twitter.

“Oh no, Netflix does the purge?” The Twitter user wrote in the post.

Netflix offers to verify who is trying to sign into an account by sending a code to the subscriber via SMS or email to confirm that the user lives with them.

“This test is intended to ensure that people who use Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,” a Netflix spokesman was quoted as saying that the US media such as The Streamable were carrying the news.

It was not certain that testing the account user verification would result in a crackdown on password sharing across the service.

Almost a third of subscribers to TV streaming services like Netflix share their passwords with people who do not live with them. This is the result of a survey by the consulting company Magid from last year.

The practice has long been tolerated by Netflix of California. According to Netflix, there are “guard rails” to prevent extreme abuse when sharing passwords.

People stuck at home due to the pandemic have turned to the internet for entertainment, from streaming television to playing online video games.

By the end of last year, Netflix cemented its leadership position in video sharing by overtaking 200 million paid subscribers worldwide for the first time.
