The Post Baccalaureate RN Residency Program (PB-RNR) is a nationally funded training program through the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA). The mission of the San Francisco VA PB-RNR is to provide a one-year transition to practice training program for post baccalaureate registered nurses supporting role socialization through robust, veteran-centric clinical and didactic learning experiences. The PB-RNR offers new nurses the opportunity to gain confidence and competence through enhancing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to care for our nation’s veterans.

About the PB RNR

Throughout the one-year PB-RNR program, the resident nurse is supported with 100% protected learning time to master the complexities of providing nursing care as an advanced beginner to a competent care provider. The robust veteran centric curriculum is designed using the 2021 CCNE Standards for Accreditation of Entry-to-Practice Nurse Residency Programs and consists of a comprehensive four-part clinical rotation and didactic training program. Residents participate in precepted clinical rotations in ambulatory, acute and specialty care areas and conclude the program with leadership development training. Nurse residents participate in engaging and interactive didactic learning experiences, specialized training opportunities, interprofessional collaboration, and professional role socialization in areas like evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and early career development. Upon completion of the one-year PB-RNR, nurse residents are eligible for hire in a variety of locations within the SFVAMC.

PB-RNR Program Objectives

At the conclusion of the Post-Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency Program the participant will be able to:

• Demonstrate enhanced confidence and competence from entry-level, advanced beginner nurse to competent, autonomous professional nurse through a one-year, veteran-centric PB-RNR.
• Apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide effective decision-making skills and sound clinical judgment for the care of veterans.
• Use effective communication and collaboration skills with nursing and interprofessional teams to ensure quality and safety in the care of veterans.
• Apply research and develop evidence-based practice standards to support quality and safety in the care of veterans.
• Demonstrate professional role socialization as a member of the health care team through the one-year PB-RNR.
• Apply clinical leadership skills in the care of veterans.
• Create an individual nursing career plan promoting lifelong learning and a commitment to professional nursing practice.

Nurse Resident Qualifications

• Be a graduate of baccalaureate or master’s level entry to practice program with a 3.0 or higher from an accredited school of nursing by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
• Possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a state, commonwealth or territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, prior to the start of the PB-RNR program.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Be serving in his or her first Registered Nurse role.
• Be a recent graduate within the past 12 months.
• Provide proof of current immunizations.
• Pass the VA pre-employment medical exam/drug testing

Upon Selection to the PB-RNR the resident will receive:

• 12-month grant in the amount of $68,174
• Health insurance
• Accrued annual and sick paid leave
• Paid Federal Holidays off

This 12-month post-graduate program provides clinical and academic experience for new graduates transitioning into professional roles as PMHNPs. The San Francisco VA Healthcare System, with academic partnership from UCSF, promotes mentorship and fosters a supportive interprofessional learning environment for providing evidence-based care to our Veteran population.

Program Structure

• This is a 12 month program
• Residency curriculum includes:
  • Clinical rotations on interprofessional teams
  • Integrated and parallel didactic sessions
  • Learner-selected quality-improvement project
  • Didactic sessions frequently occur in conjunction with other UCSF-SFVAHCS resident training programs to promote interprofessional learning
  • Core clinical rotations include longitudinal learning experiences in general outpatient psychiatry, addiction and recovery treatment, PTSD, and women’s health
  • Block clinical rotations include the psychiatric emergency service, community mental health, TMS, and psychotherapy groups
  • Residents are assigned a faculty mentor and advanced practice nurse preceptors during clinical care rotations to serve as resources and provide support as they transition to performing as autonomous PMHNPs
• Upon successful completion of the residency a certificate is awarded
• Candidates who successfully complete the residency training program will be given the

opportunity to apply for available vacancies at the SFVAHCS

• Must have graduated from an advanced practice psychiatric nursing program within the 12 months preceding the residency start date
• ANCC PMHNP board exam completion within 90 days of employment
• Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (ie, Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District

NP residents work as members of an interdisciplinary team in collaboration with internal medicine, pharmacy and psychology residents, social workers, dieticians and other allied health professionals. Teams collaborate to provide excellent care for Veterans using a patient centered approach. Primary care clinics are mentored by NP and MD faculty to facilitate the development of skills in patient-centered and team-based care and communication, clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills, continuous quality improvement, and equity-based and scholarship activities. Specialty placements are a requirement of the program with the option of either longitudinal or rotation-based experiences. A variety of specialty placements are available, and every effort will be made to match the resident with the specialty experience of their choosing.

Nurse practitioner residents are responsible for a panel of approximately 200 primary care patients with supervision. NP residents work in a patient-centered medical home model (called PACT: Patient-Aligned Care Team within the VA) with a “teamlet” consisting of resident physician practice partners, a registered nurse case manager, licensed vocational nurse, and clerical staff. A pharmacy resident, behavioral health psychology fellow, social work intern or dietetics fellow may also be included in their clinical care team. NP residents conduct routine follow-up, new patients, telephone and video-based care, women’s health, and urgent care visits.

Specialty placements are a requirement of the program with the option of either longitudinal or rotation-based experiences. Options may be available in cardiology, dermatology, pulmonology, palliative care, gastroenterology, liver, long-term care, pain, hematology/oncology, emergency department, care for the unhoused, wound care, nephrology, endocrinology, infectious disease.
