Oakland plumbing firm robbed twice in a single month

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – An Oakland business owner lost thousands of dollars in equipment after his technicians were robbed twice in less than a month.

One of the robberies was caught on camera. The owner said that the people who work for him are like members of his family and that it greatly disturbs him to see this latest robbery filmed.

“It's very disturbing and hurtful to me to see what's happening,” said Ygnacio Becerra, owner of Oakland Rooter and Plumbing.

Becerra said his plumbing technicians have been robbed twice in the last month while trying to do their jobs. The second incident occurred on Tuesday and was captured on her clients' home surveillance video.

“It's pretty simple, my boys were targeted. “The thieves circled the block a few times before deciding on their move,” Becerra said.

In the video, the two suspects walk toward the technician and one of the suspects holds his arm up as if he had a weapon.

“Three men with a gun approached my technician and demanded the camera equipment. They said, 'We're here to take your camera.' Don't worry, you don't want to die, you don't want to lose your life, just give us the camera and we'll let you go,” Becerra said.

At the end of the video, the suspects take everything and flee. Becerra said they use video equipment that costs about $20,000 to conduct sewer line inspections for people buying or selling a home.

He said a similar incident had already occurred on August 12. After both incidents, he filed reports with Oakland police.

He doesn't believe his particular company is being targeted. He believes it's the neighborhoods that attract criminals.

“Targeting tends to happen in affluent neighborhoods. That doesn’t really happen in the lowland areas, but it does happen in the affluent neighborhoods where they know people can afford remodels,” Becerra said.

He said his goal is to make people aware that crimes like this happen every day in the city of Oakland. Despite these recent robberies, Becerra said he's sticking with it.

“I am very proud to be born and raised in Oakland. For me, naming my company after Oakland was a big decision. I'm here for the long haul. I’m not going anywhere,” Becerra said.

He said his technicians knew it wasn't worth losing their lives over a device and that they should leave it to the suspects.

The Oakland A’s have typically needed to do more with less.

It is a part of their reality considering ownership’s refusal to spend on payroll. Despite those limitations, the A’s have had success in the regular season, reaching the playoffs in three of the past five years. That included their winning the AL West in 2020, a feat that was all the more impressive as they were the only team over .500 that year.

The cost of that success? Approximately $325 million. That number is skewed by the A’s decision to slash payroll to an absurdly low level for the 2022 season, but it does not change the fact that the A’s have typically been forced to shop at Dollar Tree for free agents. Even that was too expensive for the 2021-22 offseason.

Then there are the Giants. They are looking to find their way back to the postseason after a disappointing showing in 2022 and are willing to spend whatever they need to do so. That was evident with their signing of Carlos Correa, who inked a 13 year deal worth $350 million.

Obviously, there are two different realities for the Giants and A’s. The Giants’ ownership wants to be somewhat profitable, but has every desire to win. The A’s, meanwhile, are focused on the bottom line and stuffing as much money into John Fisher’s coffers as possible. This leads to a situation where the Giants were able to give out a contract that not only would have covered the A’s payroll for the last five years, but would have possibly been able to help alleviate issues such as the plumbing not working at the Colesium.

The Oakland A’s have not spent much on payroll over the last five years. Compared to the San Francisco Giants, they have done an impressive job.

Plumbing crew robbed at gunpoint in Oakland, sewer cameras stolen

A small business owner in Oakland is concerned for his workers’ safety after they were robbed at gunpoint twice in recent weeks. Each time it happened when crews were working on a job. The workers and business owner said the robberies were traumatic. A sewer camera system and a van were stolen.

OAKLAND, Calif. – A small business owner in Oakland is concerned for his workers’ safety after they were robbed at gunpoint twice in recent weeks.

Each time it happened while crews were working at a job site.

The most recent incident happened Tuesday morning.

The surveillance video showed the armed robbery.

Two thieves walked up to a plumbing crew working in Oakland’s Laurel District around 9:15 am

“It’s hurtful, traumatizing,” said Ygnacio Becerra, owner of Oakland Rooter & Plumbing.

“Twice in a matter of three weeks. But this year, we’ve had three vans stolen, thousands of dollars of equipment stolen from us,” said Becerra.

This time, one thief grabbed plumbing equipment and ran to the getaway car.

And shortly after, a thief opened one of the work vans and stole tools.

“It happened pretty fast. It happened pretty quick,” said Jose, one of the three workers on site, who asked KTVU not to show his face.

He said two thieves walked up to him in the driveway and the one armed with a gun approached him.

“He said don’t say anything. And don’t do nothing or I will kill you right now. I just got scared,” said Jose.

He said the thieves wore face masks, black hoodies and black jean.

He added that the thief with the gun spoke English with a Central American accent and he wore black and red Nike tennis shoes.

“Last night when I got home, I could still see his face,” Jose said he could identify the thief even though he wore a mask.

The robbery took place in the driveway of Gilbert Chin, who is a client of Oakland Rooter & Plumbing.

The plumbing technicians were there to repair a sewage line.

Chin was inside his home at the time of the robbery but his surveillance camera captured what happened.

“I’ve been here for 31 years. I’m very comfortable here. We’ve got to do something about the crime,” said Chin.

Becerra showed the expensive sewer camera system that was stolen.

He said this equipment alone costs $20,000.

He estimated that the loss from the armed robberies and stolen vans add up to $100,000.

“Someone’s going to get hurt. Someone’s going to get killed, either us as field techs or the thieves,” said Becerra.
