She never wanted to miss a party, so she joined her late husband Clayton Matthew Hogan in heaven to celebrate her 82nd birthday.
Funny, loyal, smart and beautiful inside and out, she is loved by many. Famous for her quirky one-liners and for not being outdone on the dance floor with her signature dance move, she will be sorely missed.
Amy was born in Vallejo, California, where her late father, Donald B. Brown, worked as an executive at the Hearst Corporation. Her late mother, Anne Brown, was an artist and homemaker to her and two siblings, sister Barbara Turcios (Robert) and late brother Donald B. Brown, Jr. (Pamela). After her father's sudden death when Amy was six, they moved to San Francisco. Amy attended St. Monica Elementary School and Star of the Sea High School in San Francisco. Amy met the love of her life, Clayton Matthew Hogan, in high school. They married early and had five loving children; Amy Weaver, Carrie Birkel, twin sons Clay Hogan (Barbara) and Sean Hogan (Karen) and Jennifer Hogan-Perlstein (Michael). Affectionately known as Gramy, she lit up any room with her bright and infectious smile. She is survived by nine grandchildren; Morgan (Andy), Samantha (Richard) and Cameron Weaver, Samantha (Zack) and Jacqueline Birkel, Stella and Angelica Hogan, Nicholas and Matteo Hogan and four great-grandchildren.
She dedicated her life to raising her five children and played an active role in supporting her family business, the San Francisco Plumbing Company. Amy loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her favorite activities included family dinners in Tahoe and spending time on her boat.
As they became empty nesters, Amy and Clay enjoyed traveling the world with their friends and family. Some of the best memories include card games and family dinners in Italy.
In her free time, she enjoyed listening to speakers at the Commonwealth Club, going to lunch and the theater in San Francisco with her dearest friends, and spending time with her companion Ronald Sligar.
She was a wonderful matriarch, mother, grandparent and family was her entire world. She will be greatly missed because to know her is to love her. The family will host a private celebration of life for Amy at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Amy's memory to Collabria Care in Napa.
Collabria Care Foundation
414 South Jefferson Street
Napa, CA 94559
https://collabriacare.org/

She would remember how her father, Harry, a building contractor, surprised her with her first indoor plumbing job when she was five years old, and with his tenacity as he traveled door-to-door as a chimney sweep when work was scarce. She boasted about her mother, Clara, an accountant, and her tireless volunteer efforts alongside LaVonne in the Masonic Youth Service Organization, the Rainbow Girls and the Methodist Church. In high school, she starred in Down In The Valley and was admired for her beautiful voice and many musical talents.
She remembered her parents' importance of the power of education and their support and encouragement as she enrolled in the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, in 1952. As a music education major, she was proficient in several instruments, most notably clarinet, piano and voice. She was president of Mu Phi Epsilon and sang in the a cappella choir.
Music was her first love until she met and married her husband Don Smith in 1955. Together they completed their education at UOP and eventually moved to Chico, California to raise their two children. They spent family vacations camping on the California coast, in Tahoe and Oregon. Her respect for nature and her gentle spirit undoubtedly stemmed from her deep reverence for all living things, past and present.
LaVonne has enriched the lives of countless children as an elementary and secondary music educator for the Chico Unified School District. During her more than 25-year career, she introduced students to music with choir, band and orchestra and sacrificed evenings at home for rehearsals and concerts. Her enthusiasm and commitment to musical enrichment were admired by her family, friends and community.
After retiring, she and Don moved to Washington state, where they lived briefly on a boat and eventually reconnected with their community in Birch Bay, volunteering in music programs at nursing facilities and as a singer and pianist for various churches and Eastern Star to engage. With three grandchildren in California and cold winters in the north, she then spent winters in Sonoma, where she shared her love of music in each of her classrooms, as well as her voice and piano with Eastern Star and the Methodist Church. Over the course of fifteen years, she also developed a stream of after-school piano students, culminating in a spring concert each May before returning to Washington State for the summers. She was so proud of each of them and had an uncanny way of harnessing their uniqueness. As with her own children and grandchildren, she made each child feel individually understood and important. She was full of insight and patience.
LaVonne was fascinated by and studied the subjects of numerology and astrology and enjoyed helping those who would become her clients. She loved the orchestra and the opera. She looked best in purple and knew it, and back then she could wear an Oakland A's baseball cap like nobody's business. Mention ice cream and she was at the door any day, any time.
Her family and caregivers will remember her as a “songbird.” We will sorely miss this voice, her gentle presence. As Don noted, “Her love of music was paramount throughout her life.”
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Don Brooks Smith of Bellingham, Washington, her son Greg Smith of Chicago; her daughter Lori Maggioncalda of Sonoma and her three grandchildren Danny (San Francisco), Greg (Seattle) and Emma (Seattle) Maggioncalda.
A special thank you goes to the carers of people with dementia and their families. It requires the deepest kind of love and patience. Our families are forever grateful to each and every one of you.

    Nov. 20.11.1933 to 11.11. 6. 2013

Tom Lehane, a proud native San Franciscan, was born just steps from the corner of Noe and Valley Streets and lived a life marked by devotion to family and faith. He leaves behind the love of his life, Evelyn Lehane, née Desmond, to whom he was married for 54 years. Deeply proud father of Mary Lehane-Matheson, Andrew Desmond Lehane and Melissa Lehane Rawlinson. He is preceded in death by his sweet boy, Matthew Thomas Lehane. Besotted Grandpa by Christopher Lehane, Xavier Matheson, Abigail, Amelia and Isabella Rawlinson. Cherished father-in-law of Mark Rawlinson, Nena Duran Lehane and Michael Matheson. He is survived by his sisters C. Patricia Casey and Margaret Caramucci and his brother Fr. Francis Lehane. His brothers John, Donald and Bill passed in front of him. Among his closest friends were his brothers-in-law Tom Casey, Joe Caramucci, Frank, Gerald and Tom Desmond. Tom is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the Lehane and Desmond families.

Tom's life is the embodiment of the American dream for Irish immigrants. He attended St. Paul's Grade School and Sacred Heart High School and then joined the United States Navy, where he served during the Korean War as a member of the Navy SeaBees Mobile Construction Battalion, which built the U.S. naval base at Subic Bay in the Philippines . After his service, he began his plumbing career with UA Local 38, where he worked as a journeyman plumber before joining the City and County of San Francisco Building Inspection Department in 1972. He was an inspector for the downtown district where he saw San Francisco. The city skyline grows, changes and blossoms. In 1985, Tom was appointed Chief Plumbing Inspector, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. His tenure as chief was characterized by innovation, modernization and, above all, fairness. As a boss, Tom was active locally, nationally and internationally with the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and served on the Board of Directors for six years. Tom was a popular instructor of UA Local 38 plumbing apprentices for over 27 years and an IAPMO plumbing and mechanical codes instructor, teaching in every major city west of the Mississippi as well as at U.S. Air Force bases in Asia. Tom never tired of teaching and never ran out of stories and anecdotes for his students.

Tom's first love was his wife, children and family. He enjoyed traveling with Evelyn, visiting her friends (especially the St. Mary's girls) and enjoying all the experiences San Francisco had to offer together. He enjoyed playing cards and checkers with his grandchildren and discussing the latest Giants game with Frank Desmond. His passion for his family was matched by a quiet devotion to the Catholic Church, where he devoted much of his time to helping build and improve the facilities at St. Anne's School and Sacred Heart Elementary, now Mission Dolores Academy.

Friends may call at Duggan's Funeral Service, 3434 17th Street, San Francisco, on Sunday, November 10, beginning at 3:00 p.m. and praying the Rosary at 4:00 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Avenue, San Francisco. Parking is available at Koret Center, Parker Avenue and Golden Gate Avenue. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission Dolores Academy, 3371 16th Street, San Francisco, California, 94114.
