With the spectacular weather we’ve been having, now is the perfect time to get outdoors and explore Marin and the Bay Area with the kiddos! Here are a few of our favorite local outdoor adventures that are perfect for families with small kids. My kids have been visiting these places since they were little and still enjoy going on a family outing to them today.

Crissy Field is a fantastic destination for walking, bicycling, kite flying, or playing at the beach. It offers a waterfront promenade and trails that are popular with dog walkers, runners, cyclists, and families, and the water here is perfect for wading and playing in the gently lapping waves. Lawn areas and picnic tables, some with charcoal grills, are available, too, so bring a picnic and your beach blanket and umbrella and spend the day. The backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Marin Headlands is simply amazing, too.

The Marin Headlands has much to offer for families and is one of our favorite destinations for a day of outdoor adventure. Wildlife, beaches, history, natural beauty, sweeping vistas of the Pacific and San Francisco — the Headlands has all that and more. The hike to Point Bonita Lighthouse is exciting and has amazing views, Rodeo Beach is always a great place to spend an afternoon exploring and watching the surfers and dolphins playing in the waves, and South Rodeo Beach is a secluded spot that’s far less busy than its neighbor to the north.

China Camp State Park, located along San Pablo Bay in San Rafael, is one of Marin’s hidden gems. Families with kids will want to check out the beach, explore the historic Chinese fishing village, and take an easy hike on the Turtle Back Nature Trail. The Quan Bros. snack shop at the village is open on weekends for food, cold drinks, and ice cream.

The Point Reyes Visitor Center near Olema is one of our favorite destinations for a family adventure. Take a walk on the Earthquake Trail, which tells the story of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and its effects on Point Reyes, visit the Morgan Horse Ranch, check out the exhibits in the visitor center, and have a picnic on the sprawling grounds, which have picnic tables and charcoal grills.

The amazing Tolay Lake Regional Park near Petaluma is a great destination for a family outing with picnic areas, miles of paths and trails, and even some friendly farm animals to visit (including goats, chickens, and Pete the miniature horse). Most of the trails here are easy enough for families with kids, and there’s always something to see. The park offers events throughout the year, including organized hikes, a “family farm chores day” where kids can help feed the animals, and the Tolay Fall Festival each October.

One of our favorite Marin County coastal destinations for families is Drakes Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore. Drakes Beach is sheltered from the weather, so when it’s windy, foggy and inhospitable at the lighthouse or North Beach, it will often be warm and sunny at Drakes. During the months of winter, you’ll often find enormous northern elephant seals camped out on the beach here. It’s quite a sight to see, and there are usually rangers or volunteers on hand to help explain what’s going on.

STANFORD (CBS SF) – Track and field officials announced Tuesday that spectators will no longer be allowed to attend indoor events at Stanford University, including home games for the defending women’s basketball team of the National Championship, and outdoor events this winter in the face of the Rising COVID-19 cases need to be socially distanced due to the omicron variant.

San Francisco may have suffered a painful population loss in 2020, but the city’s luxury real estate market is now rolling back like fog from the bay. Expensive home sales and prices are skyrocketing, and one particularly confident high-end developer just got one special house in Cow Hollow for $ 46 million.

South San Francisco restaurants that want to continue to dine al fresco will need to obtain a $ 500 permit after the pilot expires on Dec. 31 to retain their parklet or sidewalk extension, the city council decided.

In response to the pandemic, the South San Francisco City Council approved an outdoor pilot program in July 2020. Eleven downtown restaurants and another 10 to 12 privately owned restaurants participated in the program.

The most common feedback from companies was that outdoor dining was critical to keeping business alive during and after the height of the pandemic. The most common challenge was that wind and weather largely determine the success of outdoor dining in any given week, said senior planner Christopher Espiritu.

The al fresco dining program participants were also reluctant to remove the rooms in case there was another shutdown amid the variant of the coronavirus, he said.

“I think there needs to be some flexibility here because obviously I don’t want to put additional pressure, financial pressure on companies that think this is a great option but can’t take advantage of it because it’s too expensive for them. “Said Vice Mayor Mark Nagales.

Councilor James Coleman agreed and suggested finding a possible middle ground to put it up and take that seat off the street.

“I share my concern with colleagues that I don’t want the cost of a permit to scare off restaurants that would otherwise be willing to dine al fresco,” said Coleman.

Other reasons besides the price of the permit are that there are enough staff available to maintain the outdoor area. The applicant would have to make adjustments to their parklet to meet new standards and measure the cost of collecting revenue.

“The reopening of the state and economy on June 15 changed the operational landscape for restaurants,” said Espiritu. “More specifically, business operating costs have increased tremendously, especially food prices. There are staff shortages and other factors such as: B. the need to balance the needs for the majority pick-up and drop-off business and an open indoor and outdoor dining area with fewer administrative staff. “

Since reopening on June 15, the use of these outdoor dining areas has declined significantly, and staff recommend removing unused spaces by the end of the pilot, if not sooner.

The staff plans to work in-house to identify specific requirements for future outdoor dining areas and would then contact companies that have unused or underutilized outdoor dining areas between August and December and instruct them to remove those platforms and decks to start bringing them back to the parking lots.

It is also recommended to follow the procedure for removing road structures and platforms described in the permit requirements and to immediately remove structures made publicly accessible by the participating company.

In October 2020 and March this year, the city council approved two extensions of the pilot program to accommodate a full shutdown and ban on on-site meals during the pandemic. It also approved an expansion of the pilot program to several other types of businesses, including salons, hairdressers, and small retail businesses, but received no applications from these types of businesses.

During the coronavirus pandemic, park visits in the Bay Area have spiked as residents look for easy escape routes to find shelter at home. This has led park officials to close select areas where people may congregate, but has also helped move large numbers to popular areas that remain open.

The best example of high usage is the Peninsula’s Crystal Springs Regional Trail, which recorded 122,089 visitors in May and June, according to Carla Schoof, communications specialist with the San Mateo County Parks Department. Crystal Springs, one of the Bay Area’s most popular recreational destinations, had 66,297 visitors over the same period last year.

“We’re very busy,” said Schoof. “We’re almost twice as high in Crystal Springs. This also applies to many of our parks. Parks are clearly the place to be. “

The East Bay is experiencing a similar rush of visitors. “Sometimes we seem like the only game in town,” said Bob Doyle, general manager of the East Bay Regional Park District.

Of the more than 350 recreational destinations in the Bay Area listed in The Chronicle’s Outdoor Guide, more than 300 are open. All or part of the remaining 50 or so could remain closed through the summer, park managers said.

Here’s a rundown of which popular outdoor areas are open and closed in the Bay Area, with tips on how to make a successful visit:

Marin County: At Point Reyes National Seashore, the road to the renovated lighthouse and the adjacent Chimney Rock Headlands is blocked at the Drakes Beach turnoff. North of Bolinas, where every resident has been tested for the coronavirus, a roadblock on Mesa Road will cut access to the Palomarin Trailhead and Coastal Trail for the hike to Bass Lake, Wildcat Camp and Alamere Falls.

The annual Point Reyes Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled for September has been canceled, said Christine Beekman, acting director of interpretation and resource education at Point Reyes National Seashore.

In the Marin Headlands, access to the Point Bonita Lighthouse remains closed according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

It has been three months since San Francisco first placed their stay at home orders, and the city is now taking its first tentative steps to reopen restaurants and cafes for seated service. Outdoor dining officially began on June 12th, and restaurants across town reopened terraces and took over sidewalks to welcome guests who wanted to dine out again. SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Mayor London Breed announced Monday that the state’s repeal of the stay at home order would allow San Francisco to begin easing COVID restrictions starting this Thursday.

The mayor first briefed her on the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic since state health officials lifted the stay at home order on Monday morning.

The mayor said the city’s case rate fell from 372 cases per day to 261 new cases per day on Monday. There are currently 194 people hospitalized in the city with COVID and the infection rate (R-effective) has dropped below one. The city’s ICU capacity is currently stabilized at around 26%, Breed said.

“The good news is that we are in a better place than we have been in a long time,” she said after showing the latest figures.

Breed noted that San Francisco adopted the stay-at-home ordering restrictions early on to help reduce the loss of life from COVID.

“After the Thanksgiving Holidays, we saw the numbers rise aggressively,” Breed said. “We closed early because we were very concerned about what this would mean for our ICU capacity in the city.”

San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area voluntarily became subject to local home-stay restrictions on Dec. 17 and were taking precautionary security measures to cope with the expected vacation spurt of COVID-19 cases.

Had these restrictions not been put in place, Breed said San Francisco would likely just be reaching ICU capacity.

Breed said she expects the state of San Francisco to assign the purple tier on Tuesday on its blueprint for a safer economy so the city can start reducing restrictions on businesses starting Thursday.

“Eating outdoors can resume. Personal services can resume as long as you can wear a mask so you can do your hair and do your nails, ”said Breed.

The loose restrictions also allow for outdoor museums and zoos to reopen, as well as outdoor entertainment such as skate parks and golf courses, as well as limited one-on-one indoor fitness and indoor funerals for up to 12 people.

According to Breed, capacities in grocery and retail stores will also be increased.

A press release issued by the city also said that San Francisco will allow hotels to resume operations for tourism, but the mandatory local travel quarantine will remain in place and travelers from outside the Bay Area will have to be quarantined for 10 days .

The press release also said that San Francisco will continue the first-time requirement introduced by the state to prevent non-essential businesses from operating between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. or from congregating with members outside their household, although people can still leave their homes during this time for other reasons. The requirement will remain in effect until San Francisco is assigned the state’s Red Level.

Breed indicated that more work needs to be done to reduce the spread of the virus.

Dr. Grant Colfax also spoke, noting that the rate of spread had slowed significantly in recent weeks. Colfax noted that while health officials were concerned about the different variants of COVID that had emerged, “don’t panic”.

Colfax said San Francisco administered approximately 59,000 doses of the 127,000 received, while the city’s Department of Health administered 23,000 doses of the 34,500 received.

While the SFDPH is slated to receive over 10,000 new COVID vaccine doses this week, its current supply could be exhausted by Wednesday or Thursday.

“We need more vaccine now so we can hug these shots,” Colfax said.

In answering questions from reporters, Breed defended the Bay Area and early adopted the residence restrictions. He pointed out that San Francisco has the lowest COVID death rate of any major US city.

“Closing a big city like San Francisco and then having the numbers go up and back down are some of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” said Breed. “Because I know what it means, not just for the people who support these restaurants. I know what it means for the workers and the food and what all of these things have to do to be open at all. The fact is, however, that in every decision we have made, we have had to give priority to saving lives. All the numbers we see in San Francisco show that we made the right decision. “

The breed credited San Francisco residents with their resilience to complying with COVID restrictions, which health officials said paved the way for the stay at home order to be lifted.

In San Francisco, alfresco dining and other restricted business activities may resume Thursday morning after the state lifted the stay-at-home order from weeks ago amid rapidly increasing COVID-19.

However, there will be a 10:00 p.m. curfew and 10-day quarantine for travelers entering San Francisco from outside the Bay Area.

With the order being lifted on Monday, the state is returning to its color-coded four-tier system that restricts counties based on the risk of transmission of the virus, which is determined by various metrics.

San Francisco is expected to remain in the purple category, the highest risk category with the most restrictions, when the state updates the counties’ status on Tuesday. However, this means the city can resume business that was closed or restricted when the state’s stay at home order was issued in early December.

“The good news is we are in a better place than we have been in a long time,” Mayor London told Breed as he announced what can be reopened. Daily cases in San Francisco averages 261 now, compared to a high of 372.

As of Thursday, restaurants can again dine outdoors with certain restrictions. The tables must be at least one meter apart and no more than six people per table from no more than two households may be admitted.

Indoor and outdoor personal service companies, including nail salons, hairdressers, and massage services, may reopen. However, face covering must be worn at all times. The operation of zoos and museums in the open air can be resumed up to 50 percent.

Hotels can book rooms for tourists. However, because San Francisco will maintain its 10-day travel quarantine, reservations need only be made for those arriving from outside the Bay Area for 10 days or more.

The city has decided to maintain the 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. curfew, which prohibits non-essential businesses from working and meeting with members outside of their household during these times. It was originally imposed by the state in November, but the state lifted it along with the order on Monday. Counties can, however, impose stricter measures. The curfew will remain in place until The City enters the red level, the second most restrictive category. People can leave their homes during the curfew.

Laurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, which advocates restaurants in San Francisco, was against maintaining the curfew.

“It means that restaurants can no longer realistically sit down after 8:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.,” said Thomas. “This means that many restaurants lose revenue if they are unable to set the table for a second seat.”

She added that alfresco dining has its limits in helping restaurants keep their businesses going, and she will “continue to advocate additional federal, state and city funding”.

Small gatherings of up to three households with a maximum of 12 people are again allowed if social distance is maintained and no food or drink is consumed. Some of the capacity limits set during the order can be expanded. Grocery stores can increase capacity from 35% to 50%.

The state order was imposed when a region’s ICU bed capacity fell below 15 percent, although San Francisco imposed the order earlier than the state mandated and stopped outdoor dining and other activities in early December.

The California Department of Health ended regional stay-at-home orders after ICU capacity was forecast to exceed 15% after four weeks. The Bay Area ICU capacity is expected to be 25% on Feb.21 and nationwide capacity is 30.3%.

While Governor Gavin Newsom warned that “we are not out of the woods,” he cited promising declines in transfer rates as the reason for the order being canceled. The state’s two-week positivity rate has dropped to 9.5% since Monday, when it was 13.6% two weeks ago. The state saw ICU admissions decrease 9.5% from 4,854 to 4,395 in the past two weeks.

“We are able to forecast a significant decline in case rates and positivity rates for four weeks. We expect a decrease, an even bigger decrease in hospital stays and a further decrease in intensive care units. We are therefore canceling this stay. Home order effectively immediately today, ”said Newsom.

When asked if he was moving too fast amid concerns about new, allegedly more contagious variants of COVID-19, Newsom defended the move. “We’re still at these levels, levels that we believe served us well,” Newsom said. “When we see things break in a direction that was not expected, we will take a step to address it.”

He also gave promising indication of further easing of state restrictions in the near future.

“We’ll hopefully move through the steps quickly,” said Newsom.
