House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her husband, Paul Pelosi, was released from the hospital Thursday after his treatment for injuries from a violent assault last week in which he was attacked with a hammer.

Pelosi said, “Paul remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence. He’s home now.”

Law enforcement officers who responded to the break-in early last Friday witnessed Paul Pelosi being struck in the head with the hammer at least once, according to court documents. Officials said the assault was captured on the officers’ body cameras.

Pelosi was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Speaker Pelosi said her husband was grateful to the 911 operator who directed police to the family residence, emergency responders and the entire hospital staff for “their excellent and compassionate life-saving treatment.”

“The Pelosi family is thankful for the beautiful outpouring of love, support and prayers from around the world,” she said.

Paul Pelosi’s release from the hospital comes as a federal official says the Canadian man accused of breaking into their home and attacking him should have been flagged by immigration officials and blocked from getting back into the US after overstaying his authorized entry more than two decades ago.

David DePape, 42, legally entered the United States in 2000 and later left the country and returned a few times, including entering in March 2008 at San Diego’s San Ysidro border crossing, said a US official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Most Canadians are not required to obtain a visa to enter the US as tourists and can stay for up to six months. The official said it was unclear why US authorities admitted DePape after he overstayed his entry in 2000.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to questions about DePape’s entry to the United States after he violated immigration law. It acknowledged in a statement that DePape was allowed into San Diego from Tijuana on March 8, 2008, but didn’t address any other entries.

San Francisco police said DePape confronted Paul Pelosi in the family’s Pacific Heights home Oct. 28 and demanded to know where the House Speaker was. DePape pleaded not guilty to state charges on Tuesday and was ordered held without bail. His public defender, Adam Lipson, said he looks forward to providing him with a “vigorous legal defense.”

DePape faces state charges of attempted murder, burglary and elder abuse. He also faces federal charges including attempted kidnapping of a US official. His state case will continue Friday, though the defendant will not appear in the courtroom. An arrangement on federal charges has not been scheduled.

In the state court filing, prosecutors detailed the attack in stark terms, saying Paul Pelosi, 82, was knocked unconscious by the hammer attack and woke up in a pool of his own blood.

DePape grew up in Powell River, British Columbia, but relocated to California to be with a girlfriend, stepfather Gene DePape told The Associated Press last week. He has three children with two women, he said. Gene DePape said the suspect had lived with him in Canada until he was 14 and had been a quiet boy.

DePape’s ex-girlfriend, Bay Area nudist activist Oxane “Gypsy” Taub, told the San Francisco Chronicle she met DePape in Hawaii in 2000. The pair lived in Berkeley and had two children during their 15-year relationship.

US officials have long struggled to quantify — let alone track down — people who enter the country legally and overstay visas, believed to be about 40% of the population who are in the country illegally.

There were 684,499 visa overstays from October 2019 through September 2020 among visitors who arrived by plane or ship — more than the population of Vermont or Wyoming – according to the Department of Homeland Security’s latest annual report. The total number of overstays is much larger but has not been quantified because it doesn’t include how many people arrive by land, the primary way for Canadians and Mexicans to enter the United States.

The cost and technological hurdles to develop a checkout system at congested land crossings with Canada and Mexico are enormous. In the 12-month period through September 2020, more than 52,000 Canadians who came to the US by air or sea had overstayed their legally authorized entry.

Despite the challenges, the US official said DePape’s overstay should have been noted in immigration records, which, in theory, should have prevented authorities from admitting him.

“This investment contributes to the development of the Village SF, a six-story building in the heart of the city that provides cultural programs, social services, housing, and medical and dental care, for the 9,000 Native Americans and Alaska Natives who live in San Francisco,” said Gabriel Pimentel (Apache), Executive Director of Friendship House Association of American Indians. “The Village SF is just the beginning of Friendship House’s vision for a thriving and healthy Native community in the heart of every city in America.”

“The park partners of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area are grateful to Speaker Pelosi and for this federal community project funding that will bring to life the dream of a solar project within the Presidio.
The San Francisco district attorney on Monday announced an attempted murder charge for the man accused of violently attacking Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in the couple’s California home last week.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that David Wayne DePape, 42, will be charged with residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder and threats to a public official and their family, in addition to attempted murder.

He is scheduled to be arranged on Tuesday and is facing between 13 years and life in prison, according to Jenkins. She also said a motion to detain will be filed for DePape on Tuesday, citing the “obvious and severe public safety risk” he poses to San Francisco and the outer community.

The state charges were announced shortly after the Department of Justice charged DePape with federal assault and attempted kidnapping.

DePape is accused of breaking into the Pelosi’ San Francisco home in the middle of the night on Friday and striking Paul Pelosi with a hammer, causing serious injuries, authorities said.

Paul Pelosi was transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery to treat a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

In a statement Monday evening, Pelosi, who said her family had been “deluged” with messages of concern, prayers and well-wishes, indicated that her husband “is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process.”

During the news conference announcing the state charges, Jenkins disclosed new details that shed more light on the early-morning attack, and reiterated information that federal prosecutors included in their affidavit.

In line with previous information, Jenkins told reporters on Monday that DePape “specifically targeted the Pelosi home to confront Speaker Pelosi.” Last week, a source familiar with the investigation told The Hill that before the attack, DePape approached Paul Pelosi and shouted “where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?”

Pelosi was in Washington, DC at the time of the incident.

The district attorney said DePape “forced his way into the home through a rear glass door by breaking the glass,” then traveled up the stairs in the house to the second floor, where he found Paul Pelosi “sleeping in his bed” in a loose -fitting pajama shirt and boxer shorts.

“He woke him up confronting him about the whereabouts of Speaker Pelosi,” Jenkins said, adding that there was no security present at the time at the home.

She said the attack appears to be politically motivated, based on statements and comments DePape made in the house during his encounter with Paul Pelosi.

At some point during the encounter between the two men, Jenkins said Paul Pelosi “attempted to access the elevator in the home, which has a phone” — a detail that was not disclosed in the Justice Department’s charging document.

“The defendant then blocked Mr. Pelosi’s access to that elevator,” Jenkins said.

Federal prosecutors revealed earlier on Monday that the two men were downstairs when officers arrived on the scene, but Jenkins’ account described how they made it from the second floor to the first floor.

“It was at some point after that Mr. Pelosi asked to go to the bathroom, which is where he was able to call 911 from his cellphone. The defendant, realizing that Mr. Pelosi had called 911, took Mr. Pelosi downstairs near the front door of the residence,” Jenkins said.

She then walked through the moment DePape struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

“Two police officers arrived at the front door two minutes after that 911 call. When that door was opened, the defendant was holding his hammer, which Mr. Pelosi appeared to be attempting to control by holding a portion of that hammer. The defendant then pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently struck him in the top of his head. The police then immediately approved the defendant,” Jenkins said.

She noted that DePape brought a second hammer, zip ties, rope and a roll of tape to Pelosi’s home, which the DOJ had previously disclosed.

Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was violently assaulted inside his home Friday morning in San Francisco, according to a Pelosi spokesman and local police.

An assailant broke into the home and asked “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?” according to an NBC News source.

Officers arrived at the home to perform a welfare check and found the suspect and Pelosi both having one hand on a single hammer. Police then saw the suspect attack Pelosi, 82, with the hammer, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said during a news conference Friday. Scott added Pelosi was struck at least once in the attack.

The officers disarmed the suspect, Scott said.

“This was not a random attack. This was intentional. And it’s wrong,” Scott said. “Our elected officials are here to do the business of their cities, their counties, and their states, and this nation. Their families don’t sign up for this — to be harmed. And it’s wrong.”

Pelosi was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he is recovering from surgery on his head, a source at the hospital with firsthand knowledge says. Previous reports citing a hospital source said he was undergoing brain surgery.

“Mr. Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Pelosi, said in a statement. “His doctors expect a full recovery.”

Secret Service agents and Capitol Police were staged at the hospital.

The suspect was identified as 42-year-old David Depape, and is being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and several other felonies, Scott said. Depape was taken to the hospital in police custody.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not at the San Francisco home at the time of the invasion and assault. She was in Washington, DC under her protective detail, according to her office. The speaker arrived in San Francisco just before 3:30 pm

According to a family member traveling with Nancy Pelosi, Depape was trying to tie up Paul Pelosi “until Nancy got home,” and when officers arrived at the scene, he said “we are waiting for Nancy.”

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott provides an update on the Paul Pelosi attack investigation.

When Depape wasn’t looking, Pelosi managed to dial 911, the family member said. The family is hoping there is a recording of the conversation to provide more information.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation,” read a statement from Pelosi’s office.

“Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The speaker was not in San Francisco at the time,” the statement read.

“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”

San Francisco police said it responded to the scene in the 2600 block of Broadway for a home break-in. The Capitol Police, the FBI and San Francisco police are conducting a joint investigation into the home invasion assault.

Pelosi’s home was vandalized last January, just a few days before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, as was the home of then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Pelosi’s garage door was defaced with phrases including “$2K,” “Cancel rent!” and “We want everything!” This came several days after Congress failed to approve a measure to increase coronavirus stimulus checks to $2,000.

Meanwhile, politicians from both sides of the aisle took to social media to condemn the attack.

Political Analyst Larry Gerston says there’s definitely a question whether the assault on Nancy Pelosi’s husband at the couple’s San Francisco home is politically motivated.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will step away from Democratic leadership next Congress marked a transformational moment on Capitol Hill Thursday, with liberals and even some Republicans offering praise and kudos to the California congresswoman.

In a highly anticipated address from the House floor, Pelosi, who has led the Democratic caucus for 20 years, said she will continue serving her San Francisco district in the lower chamber but will pass the leadership torch to a “new generation” of Democrats, many of whom have been waiting in the wings for a shakeup among the caucus’s top brass.

The House chamber erupted in a standing ovation when Pelosi, dressed in a white suit, wrapped up her speech.

A swarm of Democrats lined up to hug the outgoing Speaker following her remarks. Some even recorded the moment on their cellphones from the floor. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) brought his young daughter to witness the occasion.

“She’s a historical figure. She’ll be one of the top people in American history,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), a close ally of Pelosi. “This is a tough, strong, smart, courageous woman that knows how to listen to everybody, make a decision, [and] implement.”

“She’s just such a venerated leader,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) said. “It was so dignified, you know, the way that she carried and carries herself in such a dignified fashion. She went on her own terms, and I think there’s just nothing but respect there for her.”

Few Republicans ventured to the House floor to witness the speech from Pelosi, who has long been villainized in GOP messaging. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) attended — and participated in the standing ovation after her speech.

But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who this week was nominated by Republicans to replace Pelosi as Speaker next year when the party controls the House, did not attend and said shortly after that he did not watch her speech.

“I had meetings. But normally the others would do it during votes. I wish — she could have done that. I could have been there,” said McCarthy, who once joked that it would be hard to not hit Pelosi with the speaker’s gavel when he took it over.

The GOP leader and the Speaker have a hostile relationship, particularly during and since the Trump era. Pelosi called McCarthy a “moron” after he criticized the mask mandate she instituted on the house floor during the coronavirus pandemic.

“They’ve both [had] quite a career of how many decades they’ve been working here through,” McCarthy said of Pelosi and Hoyer on Thursday. “It’s a whole new generation for the Democrats.”

Pelosi’s historic reign in Democratic leadership began in 2002 when she assumed the role of House minority whip. She later served as chair of the House Democratic Caucus and minority leader, but will be most remembered for her ascension to the Speakership in 2007, when she became the first woman to secure the gavel.

Throughout her eight years as Speaker, Pelosi helped usher in a number of massive legislative accomplishments: she oversaw the passage of the Affordable Care Act, helped authorize trillions of dollars of emergency relief during the pandemic and pushed through this year’s multi-billion dollar tax and climate bill.

The California Democrat also twice kicked off impeachment proceedings against former President Trump during his White House tenure.

“I just admire her focus, her workmanship, her dedication and her able to get things done and work with folks,” Rep. Gregory Meeks (DN.Y.), chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters. “When I think of the accomplishments that we’ve made under her leadership, I’m glad that I had the opportunity to be here during those times.”

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), a close Pelosi ally who was first to hug the speaker on the floor, called her California colleague “the most effective speaker in the history of the United States.”

The Democratic praise for Pelosi was bicameral. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.), who has served as Pelosi’s counterpart in the upper chamber for years, was present on the House floor during her remarks.

“I just left the floor of the house for one of the most emotional moments I’ve had in my career: the valedictory of Nancy Pelosi, one of the greatest legislators — and greatest people — I’ve ever met,” Schumer later said on the Senate floor.

“Few in American history have been as effective, as driven, as successful as Speaker Pelosi. She’s practically transformed every corner of American politics, and unquestionably made America a better, stronger nation,” he added.

But as Pelosi heads to the leadership exits, some Democrats are emphasizing that the California lawmaker will remain a consequential figure in the party — regardless of the title she holds.

“She’s not gonna leave Dem leadership, she’s still gonna be a leader in this caucus, you know, without all the nightmares of us … without the pains in the asses she had to deal with all the time,” Dingell said. “She’s got a great deal of influence, we all know how smart she is, she’s gonna be able to pull people together. She’s going to be a voice people are gonna listen to.”

“I think that her being still involved will be helpful and it’ll help us to get — get further faster,” Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) said.

Pelosi did get some praise from Republicans.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who said he often speaks to Pelosi on the house floor about her granddaughter and his daughter who share a name, gave her a hug after her speech.

“We don’t agree on a dadgum thing. And I prayed for her husband to get well. But I’m a Christian first, not a Republican,” Burchett said. “We still talk, and I think this country needs a little more than that.”

“We disagreed probably 99 percent of the time. But she’s been a very effective speaker for her own cause,” said Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) “She had a gracious presentation of well-prepared remarks. I think it was very appropriate.”

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) was also present for Pelosi’s speech and hugged her afterwards.

“Part of it was I was first up to present on legislation immediately after. But also, I believe it was a historic moment there, and I usually tend to sit in on those no matter who it is. And thirdly, it’s an Italian thing,” LaMalfa said.

Others, however, did not contain their glee at Pelosi leaving the Speakership.

“I’m thrilled,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). “I think she’s been the most destructive speaker that we’ve had.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) chimed in with a tweet: “Good riddance!”

SAN FRANCISCO — When Paul Pelosi returned to the family’s San Francisco home, he paused at the doorway where he was violently attacked and injured in a hammer attack by a politically motivated intruder.

In a lengthy interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talked about the extent of her husband’s injuries and long journey to recovering both physically and emotionally.

With her voice filled with emotion during the interview, Pelosi said she has not talked about the Oct. 28 assault with her husband.

“We haven’t quite had that conversation, because any revisiting of it is really traumatizing,” she said. “It was hard, and one of the hardest things all week was to go back into the house for him – in the entrance, which is of course where he was hit.”

“The doctors had said, you know, we don’t want him to watch the news,” she continued. “We don’t want him to be revisiting a lot of this, at least not now, because it will add to the trauma. And the operation was a success, but it’s only one part of the recovery. The dramatic, drastic head injury . It takes some time.”

David DePape is charged with six counts relating to the attack, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, false imprisonment and threatening the family member of a public official. He has pleaded not guilty to all state charges.

Federal prosecutors have charged him with attempted kidnapping and assault.

Revisiting the attack also brings a great deal of emotional pain for Nancy Pelosi, herself.

“For me, this is really the hard part because Paul wasn’t the target,” she told Cooper. “And he’s the one who’s paying the price, I mean we all are, but he’s the one who’s really paying the price. But it really – it’s really sad, because it is a flame that was fueled by misinformation and all the rest of that , which is most unfortunate.”

DePape confronted Paul Pelosi in a bedroom, asking repeated, ‘Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?’ Still groggy from being suddenly awoken, Pelosi responded, ‘She’s not here.’

When Pelosi asked DePape why he wanted to see his wife, the suspect answered according to court documents:

“‘Well, she’s number two in line for the presidency, right?'” When Mr. Pelosi agreed, Defendant responded that they are all corrupt and ‘we’ve got to take them all out.'”

San Francisco police said officers responded to the 2600 block of Broadway for a 911 call of a home break-in at approximately 2:27 am

When San Francisco police officers arrived, Pelosi and DePape were wrestling over a hammer.

“When officers arrived on scene, they encountered an adult male and Mrs. Pelosi’s husband, Paul,” SFPD Chief Bill Scott told reporters. “Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer. The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it.”

“Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid,” he added.

The assault left Paul Pelosi with severe head and arm injuries.

“(The head injury was) on the top in two places,” Nancy Pelosi said of the skull fracture. “And that’s pretty awful. That’s pretty awful. But the good news was when he came – when he had the operation, and we were blessed by the health care professionals at San Francisco General. They told us it had not pierced his brain, which is what could be deadly or worse.”

“What they had to do was they had to take off the skull, reshape it, put it back so it didn’t scratch or pierce the brain. It’s pretty – it’s a pretty serious operation… Always concern, the hematomas, all the rest of that.”

Then came a short-lived light moment in the early hours.

“My son Paul told me that when he – see, I got on the plane right away to go, to come to California, but he was now out of the operation,” Nancy Pelosi said. “And Paul [Jr.] said, ‘Mommy’s on her way here,’ and Paul said – the first thing he said, ‘Oh your mother is going to be very happy, because the Ravens won last night.'”

Nancy Pelosi was born and raised in Baltimore.

When asked how her husband was doing, Nancy Pelosi answered:

“He’s doing okay. He is – it’s a long haul. But he knows he has to pace himself. He’s, he’s such a gentleman that he’s not complaining. But he’s also knowing that it’s a long haul. He’s so concerned about the traumatic effect on our children and our grandchildren. And we’re concerned about the traumatic effect on him.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — In the middle of the night, a man broke into the San Francisco home belonging to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and attacked her husband, Paul, with a hammer. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old David DePape, was arrested. The case resulted in multiple charges on both a state and federal level and a closer look at security for American politicians and their families.

Here is a timeline of the events that began with the attack on Oct. 28, 2022.

Updates are usually posted weekdays by 7 pm

Dec 4, 2022

Paul Pelosi makes his first public appearance since the Oct. 28 attack. He and his wife, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, attend the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC

Nov 17, 2022

Nancy Pelosi mentions the attack on her husband Paul as she announces that she will not seek a new leadership role among Democrats in Congress. In her speech, Nancy Pelosi said, “For my dear husband Paul, who’s been my beloved partner in life and my pillar of support, thank you. We’re all grateful for all the prayers and well wishes as he continues his recovery. Thank you you so much.” Her comments were met with applause from the people gathered in the chamber. They stood and clapped for nearly a minute. Bay Area Representative Zoe Lofgren, seated in the front row, could be seen wiping her eyes.

Nov 15, 2022

David DePape pleads not guilty to the two federal charges against him, attempted kidnapping and assault. He was brought into the federal courtroom guarded by five US Marshals and two San Francisco Sheriff Officers. His federal court appointed attorney is Angela Chuang. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 30.

Nov 9, 2022

A federal indictment is handed up by a federal grand jury against David DePape. He is charged with attempted kidnapping as well as assault. Combined, the two charges carry a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison. The indictment reveals that the encounter between Pelosi, DePape, and police at the front door of the home, when Pelosi was struck with the hammer, unfolded within 15 seconds. The indictment says that DePape planned to use Speaker Pelosi to lure another individual he had targeted. Electronic evidence seized at DePape’s Richmond home shows that he had researched an address for that target, but the indictment did not identify the target by name. An additional target is also mentioned, but not named.

EXCLUSIVE: Former partner of accused Paul Pelosi attacker DePape reveals new details about suspect

Nov 4, 2022

A preliminary hearing date for suspect David DePape is set for Dec. 14 on the state charges leveled against him.

For the first time, Nancy Pelosi speaks about the attack on her husband, in a video update posted to her Team Pelosi YouTube page. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words, your prayers and your good wishes for Paul,” the speaker says. “It’s going to be a long haul, but he will be well. And it’s so tragic how it happened. But, nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by family, so that’s a wonderful thing.”

Nov 3, 2022

Six days after the attack, Paul Pelosi is released from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull, received treatment for injuries to his right arm as well as both hands, and is expected to recover. A statement from Nancy Pelosi says, “Paul remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence. He is now home surrounded by his family who request privacy.”

Immigration officials say the suspect, David DePape, is in the US illegally and has overstayed a visa from Canada. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against DePape. The detainer is unlikely to have an immediate impact since deportations often happen after criminal cases are resolved.

VIDEO: Who’s David DePape? What we know about suspect in attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband at SF home

Nov 2, 2022

US Capitol Police had cameras outside of the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but they were not monitored, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. According to the sources, Capitol Police saw the flash of police lights on the camera, rewound the video, and saw the break-in.

Former neighbors of David DePape in the city of Richmond talk about the man they knew. They say he often worked as a handyman and describe him as quiet.

Nov 1, 2022

David DePape makes his first court appearance in this case in order to plead not guilty to six charges against him. This case is heard in a San Francisco courtroom and concerns charges at a state, not federal, level. DePape is being held without bail. He is being represented by public defender Adam Lipson.

A federal affidavit reveals graphic details about what unfolded inside the Pelosi house in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 2022. It says Pelosi called 911 at 2:23 am to report a stranger inside his house. SFPD officers arrived at 2:31 am and encountered Pelosi and DePape inside the house, each with a hand on a hammer. “DEPAPE pulled the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and swung the hammer, striking Pelosi in the head. Officers immediately went inside and were able to restrain DEPAPE. While officers were restraining DEPAPE, Pelosi appeared to be unconscious on the ground.”

VIDEO: State Sen. Wiener remembers Pelosi attack suspect from 10 years ago; details death threats he’s faced

Pelosi spoke with SFPD officers while in the ambulance on his way to the hospital. He told officers he had never seen DePape before he woke him up and “stated he wanted to talk to ‘Nancy’.”

The affidavit describes an interview DePape gave SFPD: “DEPAPE stated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her. If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the ‘truth,’ he would let her go, and if she ‘lied,’ he was going to break ‘her kneecaps’…DEPAPE also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions.” DePape says he broke into the house through a glass door by using a hammer. “DEPAPE had zip ties, tape, rope, and at least one hammer with him that morning. The evidence further shows that DEPAPE assaulted Mr. Pelosi with DEPAPE’s own hammer.”

The affidavit also mentions a witness who was working as a private security guard at a nearby house. The witness “saw an individual in all black, carrying a large black bag on his back, walking near the Pelosi residence” and soon after the witness “heard what sounded like banging on either a door or car and then heard the sirens within a minute or two.”

october 31, 2022

David DePape, the man suspected of attacking Paul Pelosi, is released from the hospital and booked into San Francisco jail. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during his arrest. He’s due in court for his first appearance Nov. 1.

RELATED: Former neighbors describe Paul Pelosi attack suspect David DePape as ‘quiet, evasive’

The San Francisco District Attorney’s office half announces a dozen felony charges against DePape including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and threatening the life or serious bodily harm to a public official. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says the six felony charges carry sentences of 13 years to life in prison. DePape also faces federal charges including assault on the immediate family member of a federal official, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He was also charged with the attempted kidnapping of a federal official, which carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

october 29, 2022

Nancy Pelosi releases her first statement about the attack. In a post on Twitter, the House Speaker thanks people for their concern about her husband, Paul, saying “Thank you for your prayers for my husband and our family.” Paul Pelosi remains hospitalized.

David DePape’s former partner talks with ABC7 News and shares her concerns about DePape’s mental health issues. Oxane Taub, who goes by the name Gyspy, was a well-known local nudist activist who is currently imprisoned. The two have children together.

RELATED: Paul Pelosi attack: Security cameras at SF home not monitored at time of break-in, police confirm

october 28, 2022

Paul Pelosi is attacked inside his San Francisco home and hit with a hammer. His wife, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was not home at the time of the attack. Outside their Pacific Heights house, broken glass is clearly visible by an exterior door.

Paul Pelosi, who is 82 years old, is admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and undergoes surgery to repair a skull fracture. He also has serious injuries to his right arm and both hands. A spokesman for Nancy Pelosi says doctors expect a full recovery. She arrives around 4 pm after flying in from Washington, DC

The suspect is arrested and also hospitalized. He is identified as 42-year-old David DePape. His current address is in Richmond, but he has past connections to the Berkeley art crowd and was involved in nude protests in San Francisco.

Six days after suffering a fractured skull in a vicious attack, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been discharged from the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Mr. Pelosi, 82, is resting at home, recovering from injuries to his head, arm and hand. He spent most of his time at the hospital in the intensive care unit, according to a person familiar with the matter.

“The Pelosi family is thankful for the beautiful outpouring of love, support and prayers from around the world,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement. “Paul is grateful to the 911 operator, emergency responders, trauma care team, ICU staff and the entire ZSFGH medical staff for their excellent and compassionate lifesaving treatment he received after the violent assault in our home.”

She added that her husband “remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence. He is now home surrounded by his family who request privacy.”

A 42-year-old man, David DePape, has been charged by federal prosecutors with attempting to kidnap Ms. Pelosi and assaulting a relative of a federal official after breaking into the couple’s San Francisco home on Oct. 28. He also pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to several state felony charges.

Mr. DePape, who had embraced far-right conspiracy theories, struck Mr. Pelosi with a hammer in front of the police, according to prosecutors, and told investigators that he wished to break Ms. Pelosi’s kneecaps if she “lied” and see her “wheeled into Congress” as a lesson to other lawmakers.

His early morning break-in to the Pelosis’ house, in the upscale neighborhood of Pacific Heights, was detailed in a filing made by local prosecutors this week as they argued Mr. DePape should be detained without bail. On Friday, prosecutors and Mr. DePape’s defense team will appear before a San Francisco judge, who will set a date for his preliminary hearing and a bail hearing.

Mr. DePape, who brought zip-ties and two hammers, smashed through a glass door at the back of the house and confronted Mr. Pelosi, who had been asleep in his bedroom, according to two filings issued this week by state and federal prosecutors . The suspected demanded to see Ms. Pelosi, who was in Washington at the time, according to the authorities.

After some discussion, Mr. DePape allowed Mr. Pelosi to use the bathroom, where Mr. Pelosi called 911, and tried to signal surreptitiously to the dispatcher that he was in trouble while Mr. DePape listened to the call, the prosecutors said. When police officers arrived at the house, they witnessed the two men, who had moved downstairs, struggling for control of one of the hammers.

Mr. DePape pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and smashed him on the head with it before being tackled and restrained by officers. “Mr. Pelosi remained unresponsive for about three minutes, waking up in a pool of his own blood,” according to the local prosecutors’ filing.

Later, according to the same filing, Mr. DePape told officers that he was there on a “suicide mission,” looking for Ms. Pelosi, and that he had other targets as well: a local professor and several state and federal politicians, as well as their relatives.

“I’m sick of the insane fucking level of lies coming out of Washington, DC,” Mr. DePape told officers, according to the authorities.

Mr. DePape grew up in British Columbia in Canada and moved to California about two decades ago. For years, Mr. DePape was living in Berkeley, Calif., where he was at times homeless, before moving to a garage in nearby Richmond about two years ago.

Mr. DePape was easygoing, quiet and a diligent worker, according to Frank Ciccarelli, a carpenter who employed him for the past six years. But he also began embracing political conspiracy theories and believed that the 2020 election had been stolen, Mr. Ciccarelli said.

A few years ago, Mr. Ciccarelli tried to help out Mr. DePape, moving him off the street and into his friend’s garage. But Mr. Ciccarelli believed that gave Mr. DePape greater access to the internet, allowing him to become more isolated and captive to his darkest thoughts.

Mr DePape appeared to have written a blog filled with rants about the 2020 election, antisemitic beliefs and QAnon conspiracy theories. “He went down the rabbit hole,” Mr. Ciccarelli said.

On Tuesday, Adam Lipson, Mr. DePape’s public defender, signaled that his client’s “vulnerability” to political misinformation and propaganda could be a possible strategy for his legal defense.

“That’s certainly something we’re going to look into,” Mr Lipson said.

More on the Paul Pelosi Attack
