A plumber visit can cost anywhere from $175 to $450. If you don’t have that money lying around, you should have a chat with your TikTok-loving grandkids before they come to visit. A viral TikTok pipe cleaning trend could destroy your home’s sewage disposal system.

It’s all part of a viral trend called “product overload.” Users film themselves filling toilets, baths and sinks with a surplus of astringent cleaners. Not only is it wasteful, but it can also be dangerous.

Before we dive into the details, here’s a quick disclaimer: Not all TikTok cleaning trends are dangerous. In fact, cleaning-focused TikTokers often share some great product recommendations. But this particular trend can cause severe damage to your pipes and your lungs.

This “CleanTok” trend can poison your family

If you’ve ever wondered, “How dangerous is TikTok?” here’s a perfect example. If you’re behind on the times, here’s a quick overview of how it’s even possible for a social media video to put you in danger.

TikTok is a video-sharing app with 1 billion active users as of 2022. It’s hard for moderators to rein in so many people at once. This means dangerous trends can slip through the cracks.

Some videos with the #productoverload hashtag have warnings at the bottom. For example, a footer underneath this video says, “Participating in this activity could result in your or others getting hurt.”

It’s a bit of an understatement since the wrong combination of chemical cleaners could lead to homemade mustard gas. Just in case you forgot this historical tidbit, mustard gas is a chemical weapon of war. The Genoa Convention banned it in 1925.

Maybe it’s hard for you to picture the trend when you don’t have a video. We’ve got you covered. Here’s an example:

@cleaningmamabee Reply to @asyy_yyy  #emojiclean part 1 of 2 #MadewithKAContest #asmrcleaning #cleantok #fypシ #foryou #satisfying #toiletclean #asmr #colorfulcleaning #productoverload ♬ original sound – Cleaning Mama Bee

Notice how the person behind the camera overlays different cleaners. Stacking chemicals like this can burn your throat or skin. It can also poison you or make you pass out.

Here’s why the user is doing this in the first place. They’re responding to a challenge, which you can see in the upper-left corner of the video.

One of their followers challenged them to use toilet cleaners based on emojis. So the TikTok user is cleaning their toilet bowl as an artistic challenge. They’re focusing on colors rather than ingredients.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY: 18 must-have items that help you survive any emergency

Aside from the dangers, this TikTok pipe cleaning trend can damage your home

Costly damage can bite a massive hole out of your bank account. Mixing corrosive cleaning chemicals can damage household drainage systems and pipes. The product overload trend introduces the risks of fires and explosions and can also cause pipe erosion or flooding.

You could even deal with clogged pipes. That’s because a sludgy mixture of cleaning products can make a thick, goopy paste that blocks your pipes. In some cases, the internal pipe damage could impact your entire community’s wastewater.

You might think your city’s wastewater treatment system is too strong to be hurt so easily. But your pipes need lots of water to flush these thick mixes down the drain. These volatile chemical combinations are demanding, which could strain local resources. So, this could hurt the environment.

If you want to cut man-made chemical cleaners out of your life, switch to plant-based products. Here are some of the best natural cleaners you should try.

You need to know about this if you have friends or family members who love TikTok

If you have loved ones who adore TikTok, bring this to their attention. You must warn them ahead of time so they don’t hurt themselves. Actually, they might hurt you if they come to visit!

Share this article with your friends just in case they need a reminder of the most dangerous cleaner combos:

ammonia + bleach = chloramines.

Dish detergent + bleach = Toxic gas.

hydrogen peroxide + Vinegar = peracetic acid.

Lysol + bleach = Toxic gas.

Mildew stain remover + bleach = chlorine gas.

Oven cleaner + bleach = chlorine gas.

rubbing alcohol + bleach = chloroform.

Toilet bowl cleaner + bleach = Toxic fumes.

Vinegar + bleach = chlorine gas.

Oh, and don’t mix different drain cleaners. This can release chlorine gas, leading to fires or even an explosion!

The same goes for your kids or grandkids. Maybe they haven’t taken their chemistry class and need some guidance. Warn them about this trend, or you might catch them doing this in the sink!

Odds are that most San Franciscans have never even heard of the Lake Merced Tunnel, but it’s a historic piece of 19th century infrastructure that’s critical to keeping the city’s sewers flowing without dumping filth straight into the Pacific Ocean.

It’s also in danger of being destroyed by that same ocean, as climate change sends the tides creeping ever inward, forcing the city to embark on a $150 million-plus preservation plan.

According to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the Lake Merced Tunnel is a 14-foot wide drainage pipe that runs underneath the Great Highway and serves the Oceanside Treatment Plant and related pumping station on Ocean Beach.

The plant is one of three in SF responsible for sanitizing both stormwater and sewer discharges before dumping them, and handles about 20 percent of the city’s wastewater.

When there’s too much waste for the plant to take in all at once, like during big storms, the overflow goes into the Lake Merced Tunnel.

While being a giant sewer pipe may not sound very impressive, when it was built in 1896, the San Francisco Call hailed the tunnel as “one of the most difficult pieces of engineering work ever undertaken in the state” and gushed about its completion in just 17 months despite “many difficulties encountered in eddies of subterranean water.” (Note that the tunnel predates the treatment plant by nearly 100 years; the Oceanside facility wasn’t built until 1993, adapting the existing tunnel for its purposes.)

The tunnel was one of the crowning achievements of what you might call a sewer century in San Francisco.

“Back in the 1800s we built more sewers than anyone,” George Engel, an operations manager at the SF Public Utilities Commission, tells Curbed SF.

“We still have in the order of 100 miles of sewers” from the 19th century in operation in San Francisco today, Engels adds, tunnel included.

The Lake Merced Tunnel, like the entire apparatus that disposes of SF’s waste, is a bit of a hidden gem. In 2014 SPUR marveled at the “invisible infrastructure” that keeps the system moving but also out of sight of the beach-going public.

But this obscure bit of plumbing is important—and it’s also in serious danger. The Planning Department warns that erosion and sea level rise threaten to swamp the tunnel and related infrastructure in the near future.

The city has not said in so many words that the coastal water plant itself is in danger—SFist describes the facility as potentially being “flushed into the Pacific”—but there is important plumbing infrastructure inland of the tunnel, and it is plausible to imagine more elaborate problems in the future.

To counter this aquatic encroachment, the city has a $151.3 million plan to pushback the ocean.

In a November memo SFPUC General Manager Harlan Kelly laid out the two critical initiatives: removing several thousand feet of the Great Highway between Sloat and Skyline Boulevard (a stretch that is doomed to be eaten away), and creating a “multipurpose coastal protection/restoration /access system.”

That last one is a broad term consisting of actions ranging from “managed retreat” of the shoreline to “beach nourishment”—ie, carting in vast amounts of sand to replace eroded material (something the city already does every year).

The city hopes to begin actual construction work in 2023.

As the San Francisco Examiner notes, the current price tag has swelled some $60 million compared to previous estimates. The city blames “refinements” in the construction plan for increasing costs.

In 2015, environmental group Surfrider advised that the city consider relocating the Lake Merced Tunnel altogether, arguing that since “sea level rise and climate change‐driven storms are due to intensify in the years ahead” that keeping the tunnel where it is only delays the inevitable, but SFPUC will nevertheless move forward trying to preserve the tunnel at its original location.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan to relax Chicago’s sanitation law to ease the financial burden on homeowners and businesses went through a city council committee on Tuesday, paving the way for increased use of plastic pipe and construction of “more gender-neutral restrooms.”

At the behest of newly appointed building commissioner Matthew Beaudet, the Zoning Committee has approved several changes.

One would permit expanded use of PVC plastic drain, waste and vent pipes, now restricted to above ground applications in residential buildings no higher than three stories.

The changes would allow PVC drainpipe to be used for the residential portion of buildings up to 60 feet, or five stories, even if part of the building houses commercial space.

PVC pipes would also be allowed for underground residential use “if they are completely separate from commercial use. But if they both use the same thing, then it would be cast iron,” Beaudet told councillors.

“These expanded opportunities for residential use will be a huge benefit for homeowners who want to stay in their homes and for multi-family housing, especially for affordable housing,” the new commissioner said.

Despite the changes, Chicago would retain its longstanding need for copper tubing for drinking water. Some cities allow the use of “other materials”, but after consultation with “industry groups” and the Ministry of Water Management, the city hall decided not to relax this part of the code.

Another change allows “small physical stores”, including restaurants with 30 people or fewer, to provide only a single-user toilet.

“By reducing the floor space required for restrooms, the floor space that can be used for business activities increases. … In a small restaurant there might be room for an extra table with two seats,” Beaudet told councillors.

“This will help tremendously as businesses emerge from the pandemic and new businesses seek to open in your business corridors and neighborhoods.”

Gender-neutral bathrooms instead of separate male and female bathrooms would free up space in restaurants and other businesses. Associated Press

Also, the OC would add provisions for gender-neutral restrooms – with gender-neutral signs – that take up less space and therefore free up more revenue-generating floor space for larger restaurants and businesses.

If, as expected, the full Council agrees to the change, so-called “single-user toilet rooms” could be used to provide the required toilet facilities, “either in combination with or instead of multi-stall male and female toilets”. said the commissioner.

The ordinance also allows “all-gender toilets, with multiple private toilet stalls and shared sinks,” Beaudet said. This option includes requirements to “ensure security and privacy for all users,” he said.

“These changes help create toilets that are more user-friendly and welcoming not just for transgender people, but for everyone,” Beaudet said.

“For example, a parent who doesn’t want to send their child to a opposite-sex toilet alone, or an elderly person who needs help from a caregiver of the opposite sex.”

The changes would also clarify requirements for water safety, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and swimming pool design as part of a series of updates to “better align plumbing codes with the Chicago building code revised two years ago.

Also Tuesday, the Zoning Committee expanded the list of property owners who can benefit from Lightfoot’s slow plan to replace leading service lines.

Last year, the City Council approved a permit fee waiver of up to $3,100 for homeowners who volunteer to replace their leading service lines. The problem is that only 20 homeowners in the city introduced the mayor.

The expanded regulation would offer churches and other nonprofits the same break.

Muddy Waters House has been approved for Landmark status

City councilors also granted Historic Landmark status to the Muddy Waters home, 4339 S. Lake Park Ave.

The double apartment was built in 1891 and was the home of the blues legend from 1954 to 1973. Chandra Cooper, Waters’ great-granddaughter and current owner, applied for eviction.

Kandalyn Hahn of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development said the “hospitality shown to Chicago musicians and musicians who came to town to record made the house an unofficial center” for the Chicago blues community.

“It was close to the city’s concentration of record retailers and independent record labels like Chess Records, as well as the South Side blues clubs, which made it a natural meeting place for other blues musicians,” Hahn told councillors.

“Musicians were welcome 24/7. Traveling musicians like Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry were offered not only food and drink, but also accommodation. Band members – including Otis Spann and James Cotton – lived in apartments on the second floor. The rehearsals took place in the basement and went outside in the courtyard on warm days.”

If a leaky whistle interrupts your performance, do like the Royal Marines Band Service and turn it into a hilarious duet.

There are many things that can interrupt a live performance, but typically musicians struggle with buzzing cell phones or a stray clap.

For the drummers at the Royal Marines Band Service, it was a dripping pipe that created the distraction.

But when a plumber rushed in to save the show, he discovered that the plumbing actually had some musical potential …

Of course, the musical sequence is actually a staged slapstick performance by the band.

After all, it was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the last time we checked they did a pretty good job of maintaining their plumbing.

But what he succeeds in is a delightful interlude of good old British humor with a musical twist. And the audience loves it.

By hitting two paddles over several plastic tubes, the handy man can play a surprisingly melodious “Rondo Alla Turca” before the epic duet finale of Rossini’s “William Tell”, which is played alongside the lead percussionist.

Bravo everyone, for brilliant comedy timing …

Chances are most Franciscans have never heard of the Lake Merced Tunnel, but it’s a historic piece of 19th-century infrastructure that’s critical to keeping the city’s sewers flowing without debris going straight into the Pacific .

There is also a risk of being destroyed by the same ocean as climate change continues to creep the tides inward, forcing the city into a more than $ 150 million protection plan.

According to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the Lake Merced Tunnel is a 14-foot-wide drainage pipe that runs under the Great Highway and serves the Oceanside Treatment Plant and its pumping station on Ocean Beach.

The facility is one of three facilities in SF that are responsible for the rehabilitation of rainwater and wastewater discharges prior to disposal. It treats around 20 percent of the city’s wastewater.

If the facility can hold too much waste at one time, such as a large storm, the overflow flows into the Lake Merced Tunnel.

Being a giant sewer pipe may not sound very impressive. When it was built in 1896, the San Francisco Call described the tunnel as “one of the most difficult engineering work ever carried out in the state” and raved about its completion in just 17 months despite “many difficulties with turbulence in underground water.” (Note that the tunnel precedes the sewage treatment plant nearly 100 years. The Oceanside facility was not built until 1993 and the existing tunnel was adapted for its purposes.)

The tunnel was one of the crowning achievements of a so-called canal century in San Francisco.

“In the 1800s we built more sewers than anyone,” George Engel, operations manager at the SF Public Utilities Commission, told Curbed SF.

“We still have on the order of 100 miles of 19th-century sewers operating in San Francisco today,” adds Engels, including tunnels.

The Lake Merced Tunnel is a hidden gem, like the entire apparatus used to dispose of SF waste. In 2014, SPUR marveled at the “invisible infrastructure” that keeps the system in motion, but is also not visible to the public on the beach.

But this obscure piece of plumbing is important – and it’s in serious danger too. The planning department warns that erosion and rising sea levels are threatening to flood the tunnel and the associated infrastructure in the near future.

The city hasn’t said in so many words that the coastal water system itself is in danger – SFist describes the system as potentially “washed into the Pacific” – but there is important plumbing inland of the tunnel, and it makes sense that it is imagine more complex problems in the future.

To counter this aquatic encroachment, the city has a $ 151.3 million plan to push back the ocean.

In a November memo, SFPUC Director General Harlan Kelly set out the two critical initiatives: removing several thousand feet of the Great Highway between Sloat and Skyline Boulevard (a stretch of doomed consumption) and creating “multipurpose coastal protection.” / a multi-purpose restoration ”/ access system. ”

The latter is a broad term consisting of actions ranging from “managed coastal retreat” to “beach food” – that is, bringing in large amounts of sand to replace eroded material (which the city does every year).

The city hopes to start the actual construction work in 2023.

As the San Francisco Examiner notes, the current price is up roughly $ 60 million from previous estimates. The city blames “refinements” in the construction plan for rising costs.

In 2015, environmental group Surfrider advised the city to consider relocating the Merced Tunnel altogether, arguing that “sea level rise and climate change-induced storms will increase in the years to come,” leaving the tunnel only delaying where it is is inevitable, but SFPUC will still try to keep the tunnel in its original location.

SAN RAFAEL (KPIX 5) – In the midst of the fear of the coronavirus, sterilizing cleaning wipes fly off the shelves. Unfortunately, many of these wipes end up in sewer systems.

Many people keep using these wipes more and more to avoid the coronavirus problems. Workers in plumbing and sewage districts in the Bay Area want this to stop because the wipes are clogging the pipes.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Two maskless women spotted attacking Uber drivers in a viral video wanted for assault and robbery

Wes Fredenburg operates one of the vac trucks for the San Rafael Sanitation District. Its job is to clear sewer pipes. He’s been fighting cloths for the past few days.

“They get caught in the pipes and cause deposits, blockages and overflows. Or they can get caught in a pump and stop the pump, ”said Fredenburg.

He showed a KPIX 5 example of how rags and towels can clog and completely block a pump. Not very hygienic for sanitary towels.

“You just don’t break down. It’s like flushing rags in the toilet, ”said Fredenburg.

CONTINUE READING: Project homepage: ‘Perfect Storm’ triggers bidding wars as the housing market in the Bay Area warms 1 year after the pandemic

To demonstrate the usefulness of KPIX cameras, a bowl of water was set up. After inserting equal parts of toilet paper and equal parts of wiping and stirring, the TP quickly begins to collapse. Meanwhile, the wipe remains intact in one piece.

“It’s a pretty big issue for sewage authorities,” said Jason Dow, general manager of the Central Marin Sanitation Agency.

He says a problem with the wipes is the labeling. Some brands actually say they are “flushable”.

“There are laws that require wipe manufacturers to use the correct labeling. If the wipe contains synthetic material like plastic or regenerated cellulose, you will no longer be able to label it as “flushable”, ”Dow said.

The bottom line is that regardless of what the label says, these wipes should be thrown in the trash rather than the toilet.

“Help us out. Keep your towels off our pipes!” Said Fredenburg.

WASHINGTON, 22nd September 2020 / PRNewswire / – The plumbing pipe attorney is urging large, highly regarded plumbing companies in major cities to focus some of their business on repipes for existing single family homes in a desperate need of this service. Most single family homes in The United States are over 30 years old and many of these homes are in need of replacing their entire plumbing system. Often times, when the attorney speaks to homeowners, they are stunned to learn that the 40+ year old galvanized pipe in their home is at the end of its life. They also often have the same conversation with homeowners, who are stunned to learn that their 60-year-old copper pipe on their home is also at the end of its life. What most homeowners fail to realize is that a prescription for their home is likely to cost less $ 10,000-including wall repairs. The group believes that home plumbing restoration is a potential multi-billion dollar business year across the country.

Some of the piping used for scientific experiments in the 1990s through 2010 may require replacement of some of these systems, down to anything made with copper or brass plumbing fixtures China. When a buyer of an existing single family home calls the attorney about faulty plumbing – and they want to know who to sue – the attorney usually tells the purchaser who just bought the older home, “Please sue your home inspector – who had no idea which pipelines – their service life – and / or pipelines – or fittings were made China. “https://PlumbingPipeAdvocate.Com

The plumbing pipe attorney says, “We’re by far the best brand resource on the internet for broken Chinese copper plumbing (Google it). Our bottom line is that major plumbing companies in the metropolitan area need to look for single family homes – and we want to help – by raising public awareness of the problem. If a very reputable large plumbing company in the metropolitan area would like to work with us on this important initiative, please call us at 866-714 -6466. ”

As part of this “Repipe Initiative” for private households, the Plumbing Pipe Advocate would also like to support certain manufacturers of US-made plumbing pipes for private households so that US homeowners know how to identify proven products. These types of domestic plumbing pipes include PEX, CPVC, copper, and cast iron. https://PlumbingPipeAdvocate.Com

The ultimate goal of the Plumbing Pipe Advocate is to protect America’s homebuyers or homeowners from broken plumbing to plumbing pipes that need replacing due to age. The attorney urges homeowners to avoid a pavement approach to plumbing that needs to be replaced. The group urges homeowners and home builders to use only local, highly regarded plumbers and high quality plumbing pipes and fittings that are made in the United States. https://PlumbingPipeAdvocate.Com
