TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Tyler ISD had a helping hand in passing new legislation that will allow high school students to be licensed as a Tradesman Limited Plumber after taking the required amount of CTE plumbing courses in high school and subsequently passing the state board examination .

East Texas community sends food, resources to those devastated by Kentucky tornadoes

This revolutionary opportunity for students was made possible by Texas House Rep. Matt Schaefer, who added the amendment to HB 636 during this year’s legislative session. Now, the bill is law and students can easily be trained in plumbing in high school and immediately join the industry upon graduation.

“We cut the red tape that had closed doors for students to learn the plumbing trade in public schools. Now, the plumbing trade will open to thousands of students who will be able to turn that training into success immediately. Restoring real-world skills training to students and giving them more options to succeed is good for all Texans. Tyler ISD was instrumental in helping me pass this law. We are seeing interest in starting plumbing courses in public schools all over Texas, and we are excited.”

Rep. Matt Schaefer

Gary Brown, executive director of college and career for Tyler ISD, was also instrumental in the passage and implementation of the new law. “I testified in Austin at a committee hearing in support of Rep. Schaefer’s legislation,” Brown said. “Once the bill became law, I worked with Rep. Schaefer’s team, Texas Education Association (TEA), State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC), State Board of Education (SBOE), and the Texas State Plumbing Board of Examiners (TSBPE) to develop the implementation plan.”

Prior to the bill’s passage, anyone seeking a plumbers license was required to complete a minimum of 4,000 hours working under a master plumber to be eligible to take the test. However, under the new program created by the bill, Tyler ISD can provide classroom training and work-based learning experiences in high school.

Huntington Highsteppers share experience of performing at 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Brent McDonald, owner of Rub-A-Dub Plumbing in Tyler, also tested in support of the legislation. McDonald is on the Tyler ISD Career and Technology Education (CTE) Executive Advisory Board that provides industry insight and gives feedback on curriculum, instruction, and equipment to Tyler ISD.

“We are thrilled that these future plumbers will be stepping into a high-demand, high-wage career,” said Brown. We will offer four levels of study with classes taught by a Master Plumber.”

The new CTE plumbing program will be open to students beginning in fall 2022.

Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach and passing coordinator Jerry Gray is pleased with cornerback Eric Stokes’ performance so far and the rookie’s week 2 game should keep him moving on the field.

The Packers’ first-round pick, Stokes, played 44 snaps against the Detroit Lions, delivering two pass breakups and forcing a total of three imperfections.

“I think Eric is doing a really good job right now,” said Gray on Thursday. “He makes his pieces.”

Stokes only allowed one catch in his first two NFL games. He is also the top rated rookie cornerback on Pro Football Focus.

Gray said Stokes did an excellent job finding the ball in the air, especially breaking the fourth down pass in the end zone in the second half on Monday night. He believes that a young cornerback who is able to turn his head, find the ball in the air and not panic or grab the receiver is a confident cornerback.

“Making plays builds confidence, especially if you’re a rookie and have most of the balls coming your way,” said Gray.

Stokes was tight in cover and made a 4th and 1st throw against Quintez Cephus in the third quarter, which was an incompleteness and a major turning point in the Packers’ 35-17 win.

“That’ll justify him more games,” said Gray.

The Packers brought in Stokes as perimeter cornerback by bringing Kevin King and Jaire Alexander into the slot more against the Lions. Construction could continue on Sunday in San Francisco.

The performance wasn’t perfect. Stokes and King had coverage hiatus on the Lions ‘first touchdown pass, and the rookie wasn’t in a perfect position in Quarters coverage on the Lions’ second touchdown pass.

Gray said the Lions fooled Stokes’ eyes on Jared Goff’s touchdown pass to TJ Hockenson. With better discipline and more experience, the rookie would have fallen out of cover and had a chance of an interception.

“If you’re in the quarters, you should intercept the game,” said Gray.

If a leaky whistle interrupts your performance, do like the Royal Marines Band Service and turn it into a hilarious duet.

There are many things that can interrupt a live performance, but typically musicians struggle with buzzing cell phones or a stray clap.

For the drummers at the Royal Marines Band Service, it was a dripping pipe that created the distraction.

But when a plumber rushed in to save the show, he discovered that the plumbing actually had some musical potential …

Of course, the musical sequence is actually a staged slapstick performance by the band.

After all, it was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the last time we checked they did a pretty good job of maintaining their plumbing.

But what he succeeds in is a delightful interlude of good old British humor with a musical twist. And the audience loves it.

By hitting two paddles over several plastic tubes, the handy man can play a surprisingly melodious “Rondo Alla Turca” before the epic duet finale of Rossini’s “William Tell”, which is played alongside the lead percussionist.

Bravo everyone, for brilliant comedy timing …

There is hardly a eucalyptus tree in sight.

Former South San Francisco High School baseball diamond in Orange Memorial Park, Bob Brian Field was known for three things: eucalyptus trees, acorns, and hard-nosed baseball. After the look of the South City Warriors’ new baseball diamond on campus, which opened for full-time training this week, the only one of those things that has a chance to perform is die-hard baseball.

It was 2018 when the ball got rolling on South San Francisco’s new baseball and softball diamonds on campus. When the project was finally completed last September, the teams were unable to access their new facilities due to the coronavirus shutdown. Two weeks ago, the Warriors were finally able to take part in baseball and softball activities in their new fields.

“I never thought I’d see a day when I could leave the sports office and come here for training,” said Matt Schaukowitch, sports director and baseball manager in South San Francisco.

And this week the baseball team started training five days a week, finally ushering in a new era in South City athletics.

“It was basically just sitting there (during the closings),” Schaukowitch said. “We had to do a bit of conditioning from October to December, but we couldn’t use any equipment for that. But now we can use the actual equipment and actually practice. “

South City used to have two lawns that were used for practice fields and were on the north and south sides of the central gym. The softball diamond is now north of the gym. The baseball diamond is past an asphalt on the south side.

It’s a quaint baseball backdrop, with a home plate overlooking the panorama of the South San Francisco Hillside Sign and the field itself, trimmed with natural old-school Kentucky bluegrass.

And the best thing, according to Schaukowitch: No “OP hops” – that is, Orange Park hops, the nickname for infield grounders who would take bad hops if they had tied bad acorns.

“We’re happy to have both (fields) on campus,” said Schaukowitch.

It is a common story in the coronavirus era, children wanting to return to school activities, including athletics. This was a more difficult problem in the South San Francisco Unified School District, as South San Francisco and El Camino high schools were prohibited from resuming track and field practices, even if Peninsula programs from other school districts playing in the same Peninsula Athletic League were allowed to.

South San Francisco parents and students challenged the ban at a special meeting of the SSF school board on Jan. 28. South City soccer player Luis Bernardino was one of many to address before athletics were allowed to resume later that evening after a unanimous vote by the school.

“Not just for our sport, but for other sports … I think it was just as fair for us to get a shot for our season,” said Jaden Francisco, a senior from South City and four-year-old baseball player.

Francisco, like many high school athletes, depends on his senior year to guide his future. The senior said he would like to show off his skills this spring in hopes of playing at the college level. When it looked like there might not even be a baseball season this year, many seniors had to worry if they would ever play the sport again.

“I would say it was very emotional because our season was 50:50 and we didn’t have the answer to play our senior season,” said Francisco. “And for me, I want to keep playing baseball. This is the sport I grew up with. Hopefully, playing my senior season will get me looking at other colleges and I’ll be able to explore my options. ”

Now South City isn’t just back on the baseball diamond enjoying honest practices with bats and balls and all. The Warriors have scheduled the opening day for March 29th, when they hope to debut their new digs with Capuchino at 4 p.m. Necessary personnel will be admitted on site. Spectators are not allowed at the game.

“I would say they were pretty excited,” said Schaukowitch as his team climbed the diamond again. “When we were out here, we weren’t 100 percent sure where the season was going. But the reaction from them, they are just happy to be out here and get some work. “

The warriors had long called the Bob Brian Field off-campus home. Aside from being dodgy arboriculture, the field also had its limitations in terms of baseball operations, as there was no batting cage or bullpen, or a place to store equipment such as practice umbrellas and pitching machines.

“Down in Orange Park you had to use Wild Hill to throw a bullpen,” Schaukowitch said. “So that really limited what you can do.”

The new diamond on campus offers all of these conveniences. And the silver lining from the later start of the season – the Central Coast Section baseball traditionally opens in the last week of February – has given the Warriors over a month to break in their new diamond.

“It’s good for us that we have a little more time here on our new field and see how it plays and all the nooks and crannies that go on,” said Schaukowitch.
