These San Francisco style noodles are an American mashup of Vietnamese and Italian cuisine

The other evening, I made the most popular recipe of the year, at least according to the New York Times. The recipe, which was viewed more than 1.2 million times, is a San Francisco-style noodle dish from food writer J. Kenji López-Alt.

Among its simple list of ingredients is an eye-opening 20 cloves of garlic, as well as fish sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce and Parmesan cheese. Since garlic is pretty much a food group in my house, and I always have parm, fish sauce and oyster sauce in my fridge, I figured I would give it whirl.

What Are San Francisco-Style Vietnamese American Garlic Noodles?

This garlicky noodle recipe is a twist on a classic San Francisco dish, created by Helene An at her Thanh Long restaurant in the early 1970s, where it has been famously served with baked Dungeness crab for the past five decades. An fled Vietnam during the war, settling in the Bay Area and eventually launching a restaurant empire.

In the early days, as López-Alt writes, An “felt that the restaurant would find more success by eschewing authenticity in favor of dishes that were designed specifically to appeal to the local clientele.” She was inspired by a disappointing garlic pasta dish at an Italian restaurant to create her own rendition.

Though popular, the real recipe remains a secret. In López-Alt’s interpretation, he calls for spaghetti rather than Asian noodles and intuitively the use of Southeast Asian sauces such as fish sauce and oyster sauce as ingredients. Coupled with soy sauce, Parmesan cheese and all that garlic, it’s an intense, unique dish.

Why Do You Need 20 Cloves of Minced Garlic?

Since this dish became so popular this year, there has been online debate on how to make it. One of the biggest points of discussion is how to handle the 20 cloves of garlic, which are to be “minced or smashed in a mortar and pestle.”

Minced garlic can be achieved in a number of ways. Mincing with a knife can be tricky if you don’t have good knife skills, and you run the risk of not having uniform pieces that cook evenly. Smashing the garlic before you mince makes things faster and slightly easier. I choose to use a microplane grater instead of a knife for ease. The risk with a grater is that the garlic can be a little more spicy or bitter, but since I’d be cooking the garlic for a few minutes, I wasn’t worried about that. If you have a mini food processor, that works too. But avoid a larger food processor, which will chop the garlic too big and unevenly.

How to Make San Francisco-Style Vietnamese American Garlic Noodles

The great thing about cooking this dish is that once you learn the basics, you don’t really need a recipe anymore. Two quirks of the recipe involve cooking the spaghetti. First, the Times’ suggests cooking the pasta in a skillet or sauté pan, covered by 2 inches of boiling water, rather than a big pot of boiling water. The reason here is to get starchier pasta water, which you’ll want to reserve to toss with the pasta. The other quirk is to remove the pasta from the boiling water before it’s totally al dente (about 2 minutes less than the time on the package). The pasta will continue to cook as you add it to the sauce to toss over high heat.

Ingredients

4 tablespoons of unsalted butter

20 garlic cloves, minced

4 teaspoons oyster sauce

2 teaspoons soy sauce

2 tea spoons fish sauce

1 pound dry spaghetti

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

One bunch of scallions, thinly sliced

directions

Step 1: Combine ingredients

Melt butter in a saucepan or wok over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes, being careful not to brown. Add oyster sauce, fish sauce and soy sauce, stir to combine, then remove from heat.

Step 2: Cook the pasta

Bring a couple of inches of salted water to a boil in a skillet or saucepan, over high heat. Add the spaghetti. Stir the pasta a few times as it cooks until it’s almost al dente (about 2 minutes less than the recommended cook time on the package).

Step 3: Bring it all together

Using tongs, transfer the cooked pasta to the garlic-umami sauce, along with whatever water clings to it (be sure to reserve the pasta water!). Bring heat to high, and add cheese. Stir and toss vigorously until the sauce is creamy and emulsified. Add reserved pasta water if it looks too greasy or dry. Stir in scallions and serve immediately.

Canh

A true Vietnamese meal is not complete without Canh, an everyday Vietnamese soup made from water instead of stock. While some can be simple, more complex Canh recipes marry together either meat or seafood with an abundance of different vegetables to create sweet, sour and savory profiles.

Cà phê trứng

Although only served at cafes in Hanoi, Cà phê trứng is where a quick pick-me-up meets delightful dessert decadence. Made with robusta coffee, egg yolk and creamy condensed milk, Cà phê trứng is an experience simultaneously reminiscent of tiramisu, eggnog and fluffy egg custard.

SAN FRANCISCO — Supervisors voted Tuesday to ban motorists from a popular road in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, making permanent a closure that started in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic when people needed space to exercise and distance socially.

After a 12-hour meeting, the Board of Supervisors voted 7-4 for Mayor London Breed’s proposal. The majority sided with supporters who said a car-free promenade was in keeping with the city’s commitment to safer roads and cleaner climate.

Other roads in the park — which sees more than 24 million visitors a year — will stay open to drivers.

Critics argued that permanently closing the 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) portion of John F. Kennedy Drive would cut off park access to people who are disabled, elderly or live farther away while benefiting select bicyclists and runners.

Some people asked for a compromise to keep the road car-free on weekends only, saying drivers needed access during the week.

“To close down portions of the park says to a certain geography, says to a certain class of people, says to a certain race of people here in San Francisco that you weren’t welcome before and you’re still not welcome,” Board President Shamann Walton, who represents one of the most diverse and low-income parts of the city, said during the meeting.

The battle between motorists and pedestrians and bicyclists has raged in San Francisco for roughly two years. In August, Breed announced that a stretch of coastal highway that was closed to cars in 2020 would reopen to vehicles during the week.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A mask mandate for commuter rail passengers is back by popular demand in the San Francisco Bay Area, the region that two years ago imposed the nation’s first coronavirus stay-at-home order and now is bucking the national trend away from required face coverings.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit system, known as BART, had decided last week to drop its rule in line with a federal court ruling but that decision prompted an outcry, spokeswoman Alicia Trost said Friday.

“We started to immediately hear from riders in phone calls, emails, tweets, that they felt unsafe on the train if there was not a mask mandate,” BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said Friday.

BART’s board of directors decided in a meeting Thursday to temporarily restore the mask rule until at least July 18, the agency said in a statement. Children ages 2 and under as well as people with medical conditions that prevent them from wearing masks are exempt from the mandate.

The decision makes the Bay Area’s largest transit system the latest in California to bring back a mandate for face coverings after Los Angeles County restored its masking rule a week ago for all public transportation including buses, trains, subways, taxis and airports.

The reinstatement came 10 days after a federal judge in Florida ended the nation’s federal mask mandate on public transportation, freeing airlines, airports and mass transit systems to make their own decisions about mask requirements. A mix of responses has taken shape across the country that reflects the nation’s ongoing divisions over how to battle the virus.

Major airlines immediately dropped mask requirements after the decision, as did many local transit agencies around the country.

New York City, Chicago and Connecticut, however, continued to require masks for travelers.

San Francisco and Los Angeles public transit agencies initially dropped their mask requirements, but many have since flip-flopped.

Thursday’s BART board meeting was flooded by callers who voiced support for reinstating the policy in particular to protect vulnerable riders, Trost said.

BART, which connects San Francisco to its eastern and southern suburbs, is struggling to restore ridership that plummeted from pre-pandemic highs of over 400,000 weekday riders to about 130,000, according to recent data. It quickly became clear that banishing mask mandates would not help.

“We are still really trying to win back riders, and I think masks can play an important role in doing that,” Trost said.

San Francisco and the wider Bay Area have had some of the strictest pandemic regulations and compliance with the rules in the nation, starting in March 2020 when the Bay Area became the first to declare a state of emergency. Many residents have continued to wear masks in supermarkets and other indoor venues even though indoor mask mandates were largely lifted in February. Similarly, most BART riders have continued to wear masks in the past week, despite the temporary lifting of the mask rule.

BART said its police force will emphasize education-based enforcement by offering masks to riders before issuing citations up to $75 or ejecting anyone. BART officials said that police won’t use those enforcement options for the first week of the mandate.

COVID-19 infections in California have multiplied in recent weeks, following a trend seen around the country, but hospitalizations remain low in California. The Bay Area has reported a more pronounced spike in cases than elsewhere in the state with a seven-day average of 26 new cases per 100,000 residents, compared to 10.6 cases per 100,000 in California overall.

However, Los Angeles County on Friday reported more than 28 new cases per 100,000 residents. Public health officials said the county was experiencing “a high rate of transmission” and cases were steadily rising.

LATEST Feb 9, 12:15 pm San Francisco Animal Care & Control confirmed to SFGATE that the rats at the Hellen Diller Civic Center Playground appear to be domesticated rats which have been illegally dumped on the premises. They’re now conducting an investigation and will humanely capture and rehouse them.

Feb 8, 12:20 p.m Just a block away from San Francisco’s City Hall on the corner of Larkin and Grove St., children play at the Helen Diller Civic Center Playground: a park that provides open space for families living in the close quarters of the Tenderloin, Western Addition, Hayes Valley and South of Market neighborhoods. But lately, the popular playground has been getting some unusual visitors: rats.

“We saw a big, white, rat. Came out twice to look at us. It was about 8 inches long, albino white, and pink nose,” Oakland resident Chad Avellai told ABC7.

The white rat had company. More rodents have been spotted at the Civic Center playground in the late afternoon, while two more were seen under a set of chairs Sunday night. Several more were seen on Friday, including a rat that scurried under a slide that was being used, ABC7 reported.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health says on its website that a rat running across an open space is usually the first sign of an infestation. However, it’s still unclear if traps have been set or if the city has any other plans to get rid of the rats.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that, worldwide, rats and mice can transmit up to 35 diseases both directly and indirectly. Common, milder infections include salmonella and tularemia, but one of the more severe illnesses, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, can be transmitted through rat droppings, urine, saliva and nesting materials. “Rats can transmit quite a few infections,” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong of UCSF told ABC7.

However, he says that he still won’t stop sending his kids out to play. Instead, he advises parents to be extra vigilant and take more sanitary measures. “Number one, wash your hands. Instruct kids not to put their hands in their mouth after running around a potentially rat infested area.”

The San Francisco Department of Health did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment at the time this article was written.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – Sunday is the last day for the public to ponder a plan to collect fees at some national parks in the Bay Area.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is part of the national park system that was built for the good of the people, but now it looks like the people who actually visit the parks need to help maintain them.

Saturday was National Public Lands Day, a day all national parks can be visited for free. In San Francisco, Baker Beach, with its spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, is always free, but that may not last long by the time you head there. The GGNRA plans to charge $ 3 an hour up to $ 10 a day for parking. That didn’t go over so well with those used to being free.

“Some people can’t afford to get out and just think parking is another place they can’t come and enjoy,” said Priscilla Haynes, who visited Baker Beach from home in San Jose.

“I don’t think it will hit the tourists that much,” said Gemma Southerington from Vallejo. “I don’t think this would be a primary target so I think it would harm the locals more than anything.”

The fees would be charged for parking at Baker Beach, China Beach, Stinson Beach, Rodeo Beach, Lands End, Sutro Heights, Navy Memorial, and Fort Cronkhite. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was the second most-visited national park in America in 2020, and the park district says it needs the money for basic needs like garbage collection and janitorial services.

“We are viewing these fees as a last resort to cover some of the costs that have increased dramatically from the extreme visits to some areas of the park,” said Juan Espinoza, spokesman for the National Parks Service.

“I don’t believe you when you say that,” says Donel Haines, who spends a lot of time on Baker Beach. “I think a lot of money is being wasted.” He said much of the beach cleanup is done by volunteers and he thinks the government is simply not efficient with its spending.

“The cost of things has gotten out of hand,” he said. “That bears no relation to the basic activities of the people.”

His opinions weren’t unique. Many of the people we spoke to have wondered why the parks’ budget doesn’t seem to be able to cover basic expenses.

“I’m not sure where the money is going,” said Shontre Jackson from Vallejo. “I mean, I hope they have good intentions with it, but knowing what they’re actually doing is, he says, she says.”

“There are advantages and disadvantages, right?” said John Strishak of Berkeley. “On the one hand, you want to make sure that the park stays clean. On the other hand, you want to make sure that everyone can use it. Where do you draw this line? “

But Susan Mah, visiting from Burlingame, thinks it’s important to pay to keep things nice.

“Change is hard when people aren’t used to paying,” she said, “but at the end of the day it’s worth it. The low price – $ 5.10 – would be worth it to me. “

The public comment period ends on Sunday and, if approved, would begin gradually over several years from mid to late 2022. To learn more or to leave a comment on the parking fee plan, visit this GGNRA page.

Much like other major music festivals like Lollapalooza and Bottle Rock, a handful of popular concert venues in the Bay Area will now require proof of vaccination to attend their shows this fall, amid an increase in cases of Delta variant.

Live entertainment company AEG Presents announced Thursday morning that ticket holders and crews would need proof of vaccination at all venues it oversees. In San Francisco, these include the Warfield, the Regency Ballroom, and the Lodge and Social Hall in the Regency Center. The updated policy also affects a number of festivals including Coachella, Stagecoach, and Day Trip in Indio, Day Club and Splash House in Palm Springs, and Second Sky in Oakland. Attendees can also submit a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event, if allowed, AEG Presents said in a statement.

“We concluded that it was up to us, as market leaders, to take a real stand on vaccination status,” said Jay Marciano, COO of AEG and Chairman-CEO of AEG Presents, in a statement. “Just a few weeks ago we were optimistic about where our business and our country were going. The delta variant, combined with hesitation in vaccinating, is pushing us back in the wrong direction. We know some people see this as a dramatic move, but it is the right one. We are also aware that there could be an initial setback, but I am confident and hope that at the end of the day we will be on the right side of history and do the best for artists, fans and live event staff. “

The new policy will go into effect no later than October 1, the company said, so people who haven’t been vaccinated can do so in time for the event they want to attend.

“Certain government regulations may override our mandate, or some artists may not want to jump into the plan right away, but we know that using our platform to take a strong stance on vaccination can have an impact,” said Shawn Trell. AEG COO and General Counsel presented. “The message we want to send is simple and clear: the only way to be as safe as possible is for everyone to be vaccinated. And we are confident that others who were not yet ready to make this full commitment will follow our example. “

Coronavirus cases have been linked to other festivals and shows. More than 1,000 coronavirus cases were linked to the Verknipt outdoor festival in the Netherlands during the summer, despite the organizers requiring an entry test, CNBC reported in July. That same month, shows by a Grateful Dead cover band in the Santa Cruz district may have sparked a similar outbreak. BottleRock headliner Stevie Nicks announced Tuesday that she will be leaving the festival and canceling five more appearances for the remainder of 2021 due to concerns about COVID-19 and her age.

Most new infections in the Bay Area are spread among unvaccinated people.

The new policy may change based on updates to “infection rates, transmission dates, variant developments, and local and state regulations,” AEG Presents said.

Demiraiakian, who does furniture assembly and artisan work, said she was once tasked with allegedly removing small tree stumps only to find out that it would require much more powerful tools than she brought with her – information she says she doesn’t were forwarded to her until she got to work. After trying to remove the stump anyway, she left with not only a collection of defective tools that she estimated to cost $ 500 and would have to replace herself, but also with her salary if she left the job early. (A cell phone spokeswoman said Demiraiakian had been paid in full for the job in question. When asked about the discrepancy with Demiraiakian’s account, which she also submitted as part of a legal statement, the spokeswoman declined to comment.)

She says she was charged $ 50 for canceling jobs after learning they were 100 miles away (cell phone customer service said she was charged for “walking away from a booking within the penalty time.” “; the company does not cover the transportation costs for the jobs employees under their policy) who were not reimbursed for the additional time they spent completing tasks because a customer customer did not adjust the booking times and sexual harassment on Workplace has experienced. But she always comes back when she needs to.

“When money runs out, I know I can find a job or two on cell phone,” she told CNN Business. “I don’t know much to expect.”

Handy may not have received as much attention as on-demand counterparts like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash, but it emerged in the same age and has a similar business model. Handy was founded in 2012 and later acquired by Angi, the parent company of Angie’s List (now also known as Angi). The company relies on a workforce of independent contractors in hundreds of cities across the United States. As contractors, these workers largely lack the basic legal protections that workers are entitled to, including minimum wage, compensation, paid sick leave and sexual harassment prevention training.

In the latest example of broader billing in the US via the gig economy, several major cities are questioning how cellphone classifies and treats workers like Demiraiakian.

In a letter this week to Oisin Hanrahan, co-founder of Handy and CEO of Angi, Workers in Philadelphia, Seattle and Chicago write that it is “very likely” that the company will misclassify its workers as independent contractors in order to avoid certain responsibilities it would have as an employer under applicable labor laws, such as a copy of the shared Writing out first with CNN Business. It will be signed by Andrew Fox and Steven Marchese, directors of the Chicago and Seattle Labor Standards Offices, and Amanda Shimko, director of the Philadelphia Office of Worker Protections.

“Cell phone’s treatment of its employees shows classic characteristics of the relationship between employer and employee,” said the letter. Workers use the “Economic Realities” test under the Federal Act on Fair Labor Standards to support their assessment. Officials note that this is a “far more forgiving standard” than local “ABC” tests, which use three criteria to determine whether workers are salaried in states like California and Massachusetts. (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart spent more than $ 200 million passing an election measure to exempt their companies from a new California labor law – Assembly Bill 5 or AB-5 – that requires an ABC test on the ballot contain.)

An integral part of this “economic reality” test is the level of control a company has over its employees. The letter says that cell phones control everything based on the information it tells workers about a job and employee communications with clients to compensate, including charging various charges to punish workers.

In a statement to CNN Business, a spokesman for Handy said that its employees, whom the company describes as professionals, “are properly classified under both tests.”

“Professionals decide if, when, where, how often, for whom they want to provide their services, and are not obliged to accept a certain number of jobs or even to work via the platform at all,” the statement said. “Professionals use the mobile platform to supplement their income and find jobs that fit their schedules, including other jobs and personal commitments.”

The spokesman said cell phones limit “length of communication only for the safety and protection of professionals,” claiming employees could exchange information with customers for future jobs outside of the app. However, Handy charges employees a fee for arranging off-platform jobs with customers, according to its website.

Labor officials also raised concerns outside of the worker classification issue, writing that they believed Handy violated other local regulations that protect workers, such as being an essential company in certain markets during part of the pandemic, even though they did not meet the requirements as failure to comply with various local protective measures for domestic workers. (The cell phone spokesman said he “fully adhered to public health rules and regulations in all markets during the pandemic”.)

An industry that is being scrutinized

The investigation comes at a time when the local workforce is increasingly scrutinizing how workers are being treated by companies. A report by Terri Gerstein of the Economic Policy Institute earlier this week found that an increasing number of prosecutors and attorneys general are taking on employers on issues ranging from employee misclassification to wage theft. Meanwhile, gig economy companies like Uber and Lyft are struggling more than ever to cement a business model that doesn’t require certain workers to be classified as workers.

Fox, the director of the Chicago Office of Labor Standards, said in a statement to CNN Business, “We have worked hard in Chicago to ensure that all of our employees receive a living wage and receive the stability, fairness and reliability they deserve . ” . ”

He said his office is “proud to join forces with our colleagues in encouraging Handy to get involved and provide their employees with the protection they have guaranteed here in Chicago and across the country.” The letter describes requests for additional information from Handy about its business practices.

With this move, Handy is now being closely monitored in five of its top markets – as measured by the number of detergents it works with in those areas – for its business model, according to Jenny Montoya Tansey, political director of the Public Rights Project. The Public Rights Project is a legal, not-for-profit organization that works with state and local governments, including Philadelphia, Seattle, and Chicago, to step up enforcement of potential labor rights violations.

In March, San Francisco and Los Angeles district attorneys filed a lawsuit against Handy for allegedly misclassifying its workers under AB-5. Demiraiakian, along with several other workers, filed a statement in support of the lawsuit earlier this month, outlining their experiences as part of the case. The cell phone spokesman said the suit was “categorically wrong and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of cell phones business” and that the company “will aggressively combat this misguided action”. The suit is still ongoing.

In Angi’s annual state-of-the-art filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it was “particularly sensitive to adoption of employee classification laws” and noted “adverse tax, legal and other consequences” if it did the status of an independent contractor of its workers is challenged. Handy had some success lobbying local carve-out bills to defend its business model, exempting it and other gig companies from labor standards like minimum wage and hourly laws and unemployment insurance.

“We focused on cell phones”

The California litigation came after the Public Rights Project filed a complaint with the California Department for Fair Employment and Housing last fall alleging that some cell phone cleaners in the state reported having been sexually harassed at work , and that the company not only had not done enough to address incidents, but at times penalized workers with fees for leaving jobs early after incidents. The New York Times reported that Handy at the time said it was responding to such incidents and “workers are only charged a fee if the customer complains about an unfinished job,” which could be verified and not by the worker was contested.

Handy general counsel Jennifer Bishop said in a statement to CNN Business that training for the support team on responding to harassment reports has increased. “Any time a professional is harassed, we encourage that professional to leave the site immediately and report it to our team. The professional is paid in full, reimbursed for travel expenses from the location of the incident, and receives a call from our specially trained response Team, “Bishop said in a statement.

According to Montoya Tansey, there are a number of factors that have led cell phone to be scrutinized, including an increasing organization of domestic workers and new local domestic worker protection.

“We started tracking the problem of low-wage worker misclassification a few years ago when AB-5 was advancing in California legislature,” said Montoya Tansey, adding that home services was one of the sectors she added to this The exact time examined came to enforcement.

“We got into cell phones pretty quickly … because they seemed to have significantly more control over their people than some of the other companies in the market,” she said, noting that this matters as the control factor is used to determine it whether the workers are properly classified.

Action in the art world over the past 12 months has been marked by closings, cancellations, postponements and filming of online shows and performances as COVID-19 security measures have required most personal venues to be closed for extended periods of time.

However, now is the time to turn the script around. Some museums and outdoor venues are reopening or planning to reopen as news of vaccinations and new COVID cases wane.

And in all these steps Vincent van Gogh. Or at least some of his most famous paintings.

Immersive Van Gogh, a touring multimedia exhibition and worldwide sensation, opens in San Francisco on Thursday. The exhibition uses art, light, music, movement and, perhaps most importantly, imagination to shed light on the life and art of the great post-impressionist painter of the 19th century.

The highly anticipated Immersive Van Gogh, which some see as the first major touring arts event in the Bay Area since the pandemic began, is celebrating its west coast premiere at SVN West in San Francisco, South Van Ness and Marktstrasse. With strong ticket sales, Bay Area residents are eager to see live art again and have urged organizers to extend the show, which is now set to run until September 6th in SF.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do one of the first things in a safe way for people during COVID,” says co-producer Corey Ross. “We’ve been with us since July when we opened in Toronto. Just the public reaction to getting out of the house and doing something like we do with the social distancing and the masks and in a way that makes people feel safe has been great for both the public and the public worthwhile being a producer and seeing the public receive it. “

The word “immersive” in the title underscores the fact that this is not a typical exhibition, but a multi-sensory way to “enter” such iconic Van Gogh paintings as “Mangeurs de pommes de terre” (The Potato Eaters, 1885). , “Nuit étoilée” (Starry Night, 1889), “Les Tournesols” (Sunflowers, 1888) and “La Chambre à coucher” (The bedroom, 1889). Large-format projections of over 2,000 works by the artist are shown throughout the historic venue, where legendary concert promoter Bill Grahams Fillmore West lived from 1968 to 1971. In total, the exhibition consumes over half a million cubic feet of projections.

The walk-through exhibit, related to an earlier, much-acclaimed Van Gogh show in Paris, opened in Toronto this summer. It hit Chicago earlier this year with plans to open in Los Angeles in May and New York in June. And it was a huge hit, despite concerns about the pandemic, as producers devised ways to make it a socially distancing-friendly experience and incorporate other safety procedures.

“We found out very early on how exactly to hold an event during COVID and how to conduct it safely,” says Ross. “We take temperatures. Everyone wears masks. We have created social distance circles that are projected directly into the art. As part of the floor projection, there are circles that lead people and keep them away from each other.

“What happens is that you come to the exhibition and find your first circle. Then when the circle next to you empties while people are moving, you have the experience of moving around the room and everyone is safely distant. “

The exhibit also uses hands-free ticketing, timed entry, and strict capacity limits that are in line with city and county San Francisco guidelines. There are also hand sanitizer stations, although some people may not even use them.

“You can come through our exhibition and there is nothing to touch,” says Ross. “You don’t have to wear VR glasses or touch buttons or anything like that. You can get through our show with your hands in your pockets and socially distance yourself from everyone around you. “

The exhibition was designed by the all-rounder Massimiliano Siccardi, who has long been active in the field of fine arts.

“He’s done massive installations in Europe over the past 30 years,” says Ross. “He really is the Steven Spielberg of art installations in Europe.”

Siccardi was also a co-founder of the earlier Van Gogh exhibition in Paris, which Ross describes as a “great success”.

“When we met with (Siccardi) and said we wanted to be his producers, we said, ‘What do you want to do?'” Says Ross. “And he said he would like to take Van Gogh back on – very differently than in Paris. A little darker, a little more nervous and a little more emotional than what we saw in Paris. “

It turned out to be an inspired idea that registered with people amid this coronavirus crisis.

“I think Van Gogh – at this time of the pandemic – is really an amazing choice,” says Ross. “Because van Gogh had this very difficult life. He was isolated. He was depressed. He couldn’t finish what he wanted. And ultimately he was suicidal. A lot of those emotions – a lot of those frustrations, depression, and isolation – are things anyone can relate to getting through the epidemic the way we did.

“But van Gogh’s art ultimately goes beyond the horrific times he had in his life. This transcendence of art – and the fact that we look at it 130 years after Van Gogh’s death and it still moves us and is still relevant – is cathartic in these times. With people coming out of isolation – and this is one of the first things they do out of this situation – there really couldn’t be a more perfect artist we could have chosen. “
