Lewisville residents with limited incomes can breathe a little easier thanks to a new housing initiative aimed at fixing those pesky HVAC problems at no personal cost. The recently announced Minor Housing Rehab Program, supported by the Community Development Block Grant, promises to help eligible homeowners with essential repairs or replacements to their heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

According to the city of Lewisville, Texas, the program is aimed exclusively at low- to moderate-income residents who could help keep their homes comfortable and safe year-round. To qualify, residents must have owned their home for at least two years, use it as their primary residence, be current on mortgages and insurance, earn less than $57,500 per year as a single homeowner, and have less than $20,000 in savings have liquid assets. Each additional household member increases the income eligibility by $8,250.

Applications are currently being accepted, but the service will only be provided by an HVAC contractor selected and vetted by the city. The deal is straightforward: Once approved, all funds for the necessary work will be disbursed directly from the City of Lewisville to the contractor, so residents won't see a single invoice.

Additionally, City staff will assist applicants in Hakha Chin, Spanish and English during scheduled sessions at the Lewisville Public Library to ensure that no language barriers impede participation in the program. The first of these sessions took place on Tuesday March 5th, with two further opportunities for personal assistance on Wednesday and Thursday, where Spanish assistance will also be available.

Those in need of this vital support have been directed to the City's official website where they can find further information, guidelines and online applications. It's a solid move by the city government, which recognizes that maintaining a home goes beyond aesthetics and is about maintaining the health and well-being of community members. Every resident deserves warmth in the winter and relief from the heat in the summer, and through the Minor Housing Rehab Program, Lewisville ensures its citizens have just that.

The Salesforce Tower is an extraordinary building in San Francisco, but not just because of its size and remarkable shape. Before erecting the nearly 1,000-foot tower, the building's owners, Boston Properties, worked with Salesforce and city officials to develop a plan to retrofit a gray water system in an adjacent building while also building an on-site recycled water system to treat “black” water. Black water contains human waste, while gray water usually consists of drains from sinks, bathrooms, laundromats and kitchens.

In total, Salesforce's on-site system recycles approximately 7.8 million gallons of water per year, which the company says is equivalent to the same amount of water that 16,000 residents would use in a year.

“There is ongoing drought in the state of California and in and around the Bay Area,” said Amanda von Almen, Head of Emissions Reduction at Salesforce. “We really wanted to make sure that when we looked at the sustainability of the building, we thought about it locally. “What are the local problems? What environmental factors need to be taken into account? It became clear that we had to do something about water and we really showed leadership here.”

South San Francisco officials announced the city has launched an automated license plate recognition program with 28 solar-powered cameras installed at key public locations, as a way to help solve increased property crimes in the hotel corridor.

“The use of this technology has already proven to be a game changer in the fight against crime and a valuable tool for our officers to help solve otherwise difficult-to-solve cases,” Police Chief Scott Campbell said in a press release. “The safety of our residents and visitors is paramount and the investment in this program shows how committed we are to keeping South San Francisco a safe place.”

The cameras are built by Flock Safety, a public safety technology company that helps neighborhoods, communities and law enforcement work together to fight crime. Flock Safety ALPR cameras help law enforcement investigate crime by providing objective evidence — license plates and vehicle characteristics, according to the city.

The South San Francisco Police Department will maintain an updated policy around usage of the ALPR system. Each search requires a justification, and the data is never sold or shared with third parties. The cameras will be used to solve and reduce property and violent crime and are not intended for minor traffic or parking violations, according to the city.

Flock Safety cameras are in use in more than 2,000 cities across 40 states, and the company works with thousands of law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement have reported crime reductions of up to 70% when deploying Flock Safety in their communities, according to the city.

There are an estimated 40,000 job openings in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. An estimated 2,000 of those openings are in Pennsylvania.

To help address the ongoing need for HVAC technicians, the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association Technical Education Center (PPATEC) — the training arm of the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association — has created a 10-week HVAC & Energy Professional Program.

While open to anyone interested in pursuing the HVAC industry as a career, the PPATEC is reaching out specifically to military professionals that are making the transition to civilian careers or veterans looking to make a change — to let them know about the training option.

The newly-launched HVAC & Energy Professional Program offers a curriculum that is designed to give veterans the baseline skills they need to secure a job in the in-demand industry.

“On Veterans Day, we all take the opportunity to thank those who have served. Our organization is working to offer our veterans something in addition to gratitude: an opportunity for a secure future,” Ted Harris, the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association’s executive vice president, said in a statement.

The program offers veterans another key advantage, according to the association. The Pennsylvania Petroleum Association Technical Education Center is a Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved private licensed school. In an emailed response to questions, Harris added that because the organization is also a VA-approved training provider, it allows veterans to use their GI Bill benefits for qualified military service members.

“The GI Bill can cover their tuition cost and lodging expenses while they pursue their education — which is a benefit to both the student and the employer — if the student is already working for an HVAC company and wants to step up their technical capabilities,” he said in the emailed response.

Completion of the program provides graduates with an “immediate path” to a well-paying career, according to a press release. The average HVAC technician salary in Pennsylvania is $54,740. In addition, graduates of the program will have access to the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association’s 400 member companies — many of which are continually seeking qualified technicians.

The Pennsylvania Petroleum Association Technical Education Center also has a separate scholarship program to assist veterans and other students in completing the program with lower — or zero — out-of-pocket costs.

The program is new, having completed a successful “first run” in September. The initial session had four graduates who attended the inaugural session, according to Harris. Two of the participants were veterans. One of the veteran participants used his GI benefits to pay for his entire tuition. He graduated on a Friday and began his new career at Suburban Propane the following Monday, he added.

In addition, there were several technicians from some of the association’s member companies that attended “specific portions of our curriculum through the 10-week course.”

Each session can accommodate up to 14 students according to Harris, to allow for effective student-to-teacher interaction and allow for optimum contact with the equipment.

Currently, there are two, 10-week sessions scheduled in 2023 (starting Jan.15 and July 10), but Harris added that more sessions could be added based on demand from veterans and others interested in a heating and cooling career. He also added that the organization also plans to enlarge its hands-on learning areas in the coming months.

Individuals interested in the program are encouraged to visit https://ppatec.com/train/begin-your-career/ to learn more.

Training offered through the Middletown-based Pennsylvania Petroleum Association Technical Education Center is specifically tailored for energy marketers in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Member companies contribute to coursework to help design training programs that offer students a direct, hands-on learning experience that results in strengthening the professional skills of their employees and ensuring they maintain proper industry certification.

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Andersen — the leader in tax, valuation, financial advisory, and related consulting services — and The University of San Francisco (USF) have extended their partnership to create The Enterprise MBA program, in which eligible Andersen employees can earn an MBA in three to five years, fully funded by Andersen on behalf of its employees. Modeled after the USF Masagung Graduate School of Management’s rigorous Part-Time MBA offering, the new program offers a standard MBA curriculum with courses tailored to address the specific professional development needs of Andersen employees in today’s complex, global business environment.

The new program is available to employees of Andersen member firms and collaborating firms, starting with US employees and rolling out worldwide in 2023. Full- and part-time Andersen employees from senior associates to partners — regardless of tenure — are eligible for the program. Participating students must take three to four courses per year, delivered online and asynchronously, to complete the program requirements in five years. The first cohort of nearly 50 students started the pilot program in June 2022. USF welcomed 14 new Andersen students to the program in November 2022 and is targeting another 25-50 for January.

“Andersen strives to be the best professional services firm in the world and this new program is consistent with our dedication to continuous professional development and stewardship,” said Mark Vorsatz, CEO of Andersen. “To be the best in our industry, we have to attract and retain the best talent — that’s why we’re so committed to investing in our people. Working closely with the innovative educators at USF, we’ve built a customized program that reflects and enhances the work Andersen employees do on behalf of our clients every day. As the program grows, we expect it to be a unifying employee experience across our practice areas and global offices.”

Andersen’s offering is unique in the degree to which the firm was involved in course development, and the fact that the program is global in nature, fully funded by the firm, and does not have any kind of clawback, employees should choose enrolled in the program to leave the firm.

“Andersen’s culture is what keeps us together and what sets us apart,” continued intent. “Our investment in our people at all stages is just one component of how we are building and maintaining that culture.”

A Customized MBA to Meet Andersen’s Business Needs

Andersen and USF’s Masagung Graduate School of Management worked together to create a customized program, including content, delivery, modality, structure and timing, and even jointly creating a special elective class on the importance of company culture. In addition, in certain classes, Andersen senior staff may serve as adjunct professors to aid in instruction. Three trimesters of courses are offered each year: from early January to mid-to-late February; from early May to the end of August; and from early-November to mid-December. Given Andersen’s tax-centered business, program courses are offered outside of the busy tax seasons between March 1 and April 15 and between September 1 and October 15.

“This a truly unique and collaborative program and the close partnership between USF and Andersen sets a new standard for the future of corporate education,” said Otgo Erhemjamts, Dean of the School of Management at USF. “It demonstrates how educational institutions and companies can come together to address skill gaps and prepare organizations and their personnel for the rapidly evolving business world.”

Andersen and USF started their collaboration in 2014 when the organizations first partnered to provide Andersen personnel the opportunity to earn a Master of Laws in Taxation (LLM) or a Master of Legal Studies in Taxation (MLST) from the University of San Francisco School of Law . To date, more than 120 employees from 11 countries have graduated from those programs.

“The University of San Francisco, founded by the Jesuits in 1855, has long worked with the business community in and beyond the City to strengthen their talent pool,” stated USF President Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, SJ “Our work with Andersen has been a terrific iteration of this work. The alignment of our cultures makes this excellent teaching/learning experience possible. We are especially grateful to Mr. Vorsatz for envisioning this dynamic partnership.”

Andersen Global is an international association of legally separate, independent member firms comprised of tax and legal professionals around the world. Established in 2013 by US member firm Andersen Tax LLC, Andersen Global now has more than 13,000 professionals worldwide and a presence in over 390 locations through its member firms and collaborating firms.

About the USF School of Management

Founded in 1925, University of San Francisco’s School of Management is on the forefront of educating the next generation of conscious, mindful business leaders.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco announced that, in partnership with participating member financial institutions, more than $2.2 million has been donated to HUD-approved housing counseling agencies through the Bank’s Empowering Black Homeownership matching grant program. This funding has been distributed to 22 HUD-approved housing counseling agencies so that they can better serve homebuyers and homeowners in communities of color.

“The Empowering Black Homeownership matching grant program is a key component of FHLBank San Francisco’s commitment to working to narrow the Black homeownership gap and reduce racial wealth disparities,” said Teresa Bryce Bazemore, president and CEO of FHLBank San Francisco. “We are grateful for the member financial institutions that have partnered with us to advance racial equity by providing financial support for housing counseling agencies directly serving populations that have been historically disadvantaged when it comes to building wealth through homeownership.”

The Empowering Black Homeownership grant program, which launched in March 2022, made $1 million available for the Bank’s member financial institutions to request dollar-for-dollar matching grants of up to $125,000. FHLBank San Francisco is grateful to each of the following Bank members for delivering generous donations along with our matching grant funds to 22 local housing counseling agencies for HUD-eligible activities, which include capacity building, operations, and pre-and post-purchase homeownership counseling .

Several FHLBank San Francisco member institutions shared their thoughts on the impact that FHLBank San Francisco’s Empowering Black Homeownership matching grant program will have on homebuyers and homeowners of color in communities where they do business:

“Thank you to our partners at FHLBank San Francisco for making this important grant matching program available via its member banks,” said Cheryl Ryman, Farmers & Merchants Bank vice president, community reinvestment act officer. “We applaud Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles, NeighborWorks OC, and Affordable Housing Clearinghouse for the valuable work they do in our community, and we are grateful for the opportunity to assist in achieving their mission.”

“City National Bank is proud to support Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County and its mission of helping more families realize the American dream of homeownership,” said Sal Mendoza, City National Bank senior vice president, community reinvestment act manager, “We want to also thank FHLBank San Francisco for matching our grant and helping us make a difference in the communities where we live and work.”

“The racial homeownership gap is persistent and pervasive in the Bay Area, so we thank FHLBank San Francisco for making this funding available to partners doing critical work to make homeownership more attainable for Black families,” said Bobbie Salgado, Silicon Valley Bank’s senior director, community reinvestment act and community affairs manager. “We are proud to work with FHLBank San Francisco and our local housing services partners to put these funds to work in our communities.”

Empowering Black Homeownership Program matched funds the Bank’s member financial institutions donated to housing counseling organizations serving communities of color

Story continues
