SEATTLE (AP) — Once Josh Jacobs slipped past the last line of Seattle’s defense, all that was in front of him was open field and a place among the greatest single-game performances in NFL history.

Jacobs sprinted 86 yards for a game-ending touchdown and the Las Vegas Raiders won in overtime for the second straight week, beating the Seahawks 40-34 on Sunday.

“When I hit the gap, I see a big hole and I just tried to run as fast as I can,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs finished with a franchise record of 229 yards rushing and two scores. He also had six catches for 74 yards, and his 303 yards from scrimmage were the most in franchise history and the seventh-most in a game in the Super Bowl era.

Jacobs had never had a touchdown run longer than 28 yards, and his extraordinary dash was reminiscent of the Raiders’ Bo Jackson running untouched for a long TD against the Seahawks at the Kingdome on Nov. 30, 1987.

Not bad for a guy who’d been listed as questionable for the game with a calf injury. There was nothing uncertain about Jacobs’ play once he took the field.

“To see him finish like that, I know what he’s been dealing with, I know how hard he works. It was really cool to see that,” Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said.

Las Vegas (4-7) finished with 283 yards rushing and its 576 total yards were the third-most ever allowed by the Seahawks (6-5), who fell one game behind San Francisco in the NFC West.

“He’s hard to bring down. He’s a tough runner with good balance. You really gotta wrap him up,” Seattle defensive tackle Shelby Harris said. “He’s not one of those backs that gets touched and falls. He makes his money off breaking tackles and getting those extra yards.”

Las Vegas forced overtime thanks to Carr’s 5-yard touchdown toss to Foster Moreau in the corner of the end zone with 1:54 remaining that made it 34-all. Carr threw an interception on the first play of the game but finished 25 of 36 for 295 yards and three touchdowns.

The Raiders also got a break when Jacobs appeared to fumble inside the 10 just before Moreau’s touchdown catch, but officials ruled his forward progress had been stopped.

“It started from the first play to the last play. The first play is an interception and the last play is a touchdown,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said. “There was a lot of swings in the game.”

Seattle lost its second straight after falling to Tampa Bay two weeks ago in Germany. Geno Smith was 27 of 37 for 328 yards and two touchdowns. But Seattle’s rushing attack struggled for the second straight game, although Kenneth Walker III ran for two TDs.

In overtime, Daniel Carlson missed a 56-yard field goal attempt on Las Vegas’ first possession. But Seattle went three-and-out, and on the next play from scrimmage, Jacobs broke free.

Jacobs became the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with at least 300 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in a game, and the first since Adrian Peterson set the single-game record for rushing yards (296) in 2007. He’s the first player since at least 1950 with at least 225 yards rushing and 70 yards receiving in the same game.

“It’s kind of crazy, coming in and not knowing if I was going to play, looking the guys in the eyes and telling them they’re going to get everything they’ve got in me,” Jacobs said.

The 86-yard TD run was the fourth-longest overtime touchdown in league history.

“Josh was really terrific today. He had a great game and we didn’t tackle as well as we needed to and we didn’t scheme as well as we needed to,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

For most of the game, it appeared Las Vegas would squander its chance to win despite its unstoppable rushing attack. McDaniels twice decided to kick field goals instead of keeping his offense on the field. He also called a head-scratching toss sweep to Jacobs on fourth down in the fourth quarter that Seattle stopped.

But Carr was terrific on the tying drive in regulation. He went 6 of 8, including a spectacular one-handed catch by Davante Adams for 28 yards, and he floated the touchdown pass to Moreau perfectly into the back corner.

Seattle had a final chance to win in regulation and appeared to have a first down near midfield on Smith’s pass to DK Metcalf with 57 seconds left. But after a lengthy review it was determined Metcalf didn’t have control of the ball as he rolled over and hit the sideline. Smith was sacked by Maxx Crosby on the next play and Seattle punted.

INJURIES

Raiders DT Andrew Billings limped off the field in the fourth quarter and was later carted to the locker room. … Seattle S Ryan Neal suffered an elbow injury in overtime and backup Josh Jones took a poor angle on Jacobs’ winning run.

THROWBACKS

The Seahawks announced that sometime during the 2023 season the team will wear throwback uniforms with the silver helmets, blue jerseys and silver pants Seattle sported in the 1990s.

Bouncing back from drama after drama, the Las Vegas Raiders — even after making the playoffs — are determined to come out with a clean slate.

In October, Jon Gruden resigned from his position as head coach after a series of offensive emails were released. And now the Raiders part ways with the general manager who set up the postseason qualifier:

pic.twitter.com/CnwaKywaCA

— Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) January 17, 2022

The Raiders compiled a 25-24 record in three years under Mayock’s leadership. In fact, Vegas has ended each of the last two seasons with a better record than the year before. It might not seem like much, but going from 7-9 to 8-8 and eventually going 10-7 with a playoff appearance isn’t too shabby. But it’s Las Vegas that doesn’t settle for “too shabby” in a city of endless entertainment options. Especially when “not too shabby” comes along with some high-profile touches.

Defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell was tied for fourth overall pick in 2019, but his playing time has fallen from 66 percent of defensive snaps as a rookie to just 24 percent in 2021. The Henry Ruggs II selection (legal issues due to fatal DUI crash) didn’t pan out. Cornerback Damon Arnette was cut after a video of him making death threats surfaced on his social media account. You may recall that Arnette was picked with one of the picks the Raiders were able to land in trading Khalil Mack. And rookie cornerback Nate Hobbs was arrested on DUI charges just hours after his team defeated the Colts late in the year. Even in their prime, the Raiders were a mess.

At the end of the day, we’re also talking about Mark Davis. The eccentric team owner who thrives on making splashy, headline-grabbing moves. Remember, Davis just made Becky Hammon the highest-paid coach in the WNBA, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. So that brings us to a trend none of us can ignore. Because after prying Gruden off the ESPN airwaves and pulling Mike Mayock away from his incredible job headlining NFL Network’s draft coverage, Davis is back in the market for a new coach and general manager.

In other words, the Chicago Bears now have *ANOTHER* team to compete with in their own search for new footballers at the top.

There was a lot of fuss about the Raiders and Jim Harbaugh. It would make sense for Vegas to take another big swing. And it’s reasonable for Harbaugh to return to where his coaching career began. Throw in his relationship with Davis, and the signs keep adding up. Harness that competitive edge and you’ll understand why a Harbaugh return to the pros isn’t a reach. And finally, think about how Harbaugh’s last NFL run ended. Things didn’t end on a high note. Harbaugh feuded with the 49ers. San Francisco was ready to kick him out the door. And the team fell apart in the immediate years after his departure. In all honesty, I wouldn’t call Harbaugh’s move to the Raiders another jab at his former employer. Especially since it is the former rival of the Raiders from the Bay Area.

And because there’s so much buzz surrounding Bears-Harbaugh, we’ll be keeping an eye on what’s happening in Vegas.

You know what they say: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, probably affects the bears in some way!

Catchy, isn’t it?

LAS VEGAS (AP) – A few weeks ago Derek Carr stood on the podium after a one-sided defeat and announced that this year’s version of the Raiders would be different and could avoid another breakdown in the second half of the season.

After the Raiders lost 17-15 to Washington on Sunday for their fourth loss in five games to deal a big blow to their dwindling playoff hopes, Carr was far less optimistic.

CONTINUE READING: Christmas tree in Jack London Square in Oakland catches fire; Arson investigation ongoing

Another game plagued by slow starts on offense and the inability to finish drives with touchdowns called the Raiders (6-6).

“It’s frustrating. You know, because you’re trying to emphasize, you’re trying to fix it and you go and it doesn’t happen, “Carr said.” It happens once and it doesn’t happen every time. Each piece tells its own story. It is frustrating, I wish I could get up here and resolve the whole thing … To answer your question, it’s frustrating that you stress something, it looks good one week, then the other week, and then it is no more just have to keep working. “

After a promising start to the season with a 5-2 record, the Raiders have fallen apart since coach Jon Gruden’s resignation after posting his offensive emails and the release of receiver Henry Ruggs III after a fatal DUI crash since Bye Week one Have taken their toll.

Las Vegas has scored 16 points out of fewer than six in the last nine games, and lost them all as the offense struggled. The Raiders settled for field goals twice after hitting Washington 20 or closer, which has given them a league high of 43 field goals from 40 yards for the past two seasons.

“I think it’s a mindset,” said Josh Jacobs, looking back. “I think we’re just sailing a little too much. It’s definitely frustrating. “

It’s a similar pattern to the last two seasons, when the 2019 Raiders lost five of their last six games after starting 6-4 and five of their last seven games last season after starting the season 6-3.

“You want to talk about the highs and lows of the season, the highs were pretty good and the lows were really deep,” said interim coach Rich Bisaccia. “Humanistically the lows were very low and then professionally on the grass the lows were low. But again, if you are result oriented all the time then just look at the scoreboard your life is spending up there. There is a process for what we try and do, and there is a process for improving every day. “

WHAT WORKS

Goes with Hunter Renfrow. The only bright spot on the offensive for the Raiders was Renfrow’s passing game for most of the season. He had a career high of nine passes to 10 targets for 102 yards, which earned him back-to-back games of at least 100 yards for the second straight week. Carr has a 111.1 score when targeting Renfrow this season.

WHAT NEEDS HELP

CONTINUE READING: Sonoma County high-speed chase ends in crash, 2 arrested

Starts playing. The Raiders went goalless in the first quarter for the fifth time this season and only scored their first points with a field goal in the final seconds of the first half. Las Vegas was beaten by 30 points in the first quarter, the fifth worst in the NFL.

INCREASE

Nate Hobbs. The rookie cornerback made the greatest defensive game when he intercepted Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarter to set up a green field goal. Hobbs had nine tackles for the game, including one for loss.

Stock

Tre’von Möhrig. Las Vegas’ other high school rookie starter had the chance to seal the game on the final drive when he was in position for an interception. But he dropped the ball and Washington took advantage of it by moving the ball 9 yards over the next two games to set up Brian Johnson’s game-winning 48-yard field goal.

INJURIES

RB Kenyan Drake will travel to Alabama for end-of-season ankle surgery on Sunday following an injury. … LB Denzel Perryman (ankle), LB Nick Kwiatkoski (ankle) and LB Cory Littleton (stinger) are out all day. … TE Darren Waller, LB Patrick Onwuasor and CB Trayvon Mullen could all return this week.

KEY NUMBER

4.3. Carr’s average finish only moved 4.3 yards down as he settled for check-downs multiple times, especially early in the game. The Raiders had a lot more success this season when Carr pushed the ball across the field, with the average finish on wins being 7.7 yards down and just 4.9 on losses.

NEXT STEPS

The Raiders visit Kansas City on Sunday.

Las Vegas came back from its bye week with news that wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was arrested Tuesday in connection with a pre-dawn traffic accident. When the former Alabama standout first appeared on Wednesday, prosecutors said he drives his Corvette on blood alcohol levels more than double the Nevada legal limit and is 2.5 seconds away from a collision involving a 23-year-old Las Vegas was killed at 156 mph too fast woman.

“They are two completely separate entities,” said Rich Bisaccia, the special team coordinator who was taking over as head coach when Gruden left. “I felt like we carried on from what happened before and we had a chance to play two games and now we have been faced with this situation. Again, as adult men, we all have to react in a certain way. We all forge our identities in life, and certainly in the locker room, by dealing with adversity and dealing with adversity. That’s how life goes. I think you understand. We had discussions about that. …

“There is no blueprint for these things. I think we’re all just leaning on each other in there. We have a lot of other coaches who have a lot of experience. We have players who have been through different things so I think we did a good job communicating and we tried to give our players the best possible resources. “

When he got to court, Ruggs was no longer a member of the Raiders. The team did without him on Tuesday evening.

“I think we have come to this conclusion, and owner Mark (Davis) at the time felt it was best for the organization to do so,” said Bisaccia. “I think there are two separate units. There is Henry Ruggs, the football player who is no longer one of the Raiders, and then Henry Ruggs the person who is sure to go through what they go through and face the consequences for the deeds. “

For Henry Ruggs, the person, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had a message.

“He needs people who love him now,” said Carr. “He’s probably got a certain kind of himself right now and he needs to be loved, and if no one else does, I’ll do it.”

Footballer Henry Ruggs leads Las Vegas in the 2021 season with 469 and two touchdowns at 24 receptions. In seven games this season, Ruggs had 17 yards more than 13 games as a rookie draft pick for the first round.

Ruggs helped Las Vegas win five of its first seven games, just half a game off the AFC’s best record – and the 6-2 Tennessee Titans lost their meal ticket to Derrick Henry this week due to foot surgery.

The first game of the Raiders without Ruggs takes place on Sunday when Las Vegas visits the New York Giants.

“From a footballing perspective, we’re ready to go,” said Carr on Wednesday. “We had a great practice. We have a lot to do this year, that’s for sure. Lots of guys: ‘What a crazy year.’ I’ve heard that a couple of times. I heard, ‘Gosh,’ you know, like, ‘Man, can we please? Nothing else. ‘ Not for ourselves, but for everyone else, for everyone involved. But in terms of football and competition, we are ready to play football. There is no doubt about that. We know where we are from that point of view, and we know what to do. We know this was the time of year we took a couple of breaks and we can’t let that happen no matter what. …

“Is it fair? No, because I want to have emotions about things. I want to think about things as a person. Football is secondary when something like this happens. We talk about life – many different lives and many different situations. But from a footballing perspective, it is our way of thinking that we’ll be ready to play. That’s for sure. “

The Raiders have three wide receivers on their active list – Bryan Edwards, Zay Jones and Hunter Renfrow. You can also reach up to your practice team to the wide receivers Marcell Ateman, Dillon Stoner, DJ Turner and Javon Wims.

Renfrow leads Las Vegas at receptions with 38, good for 399 yards and two touchdowns. Edwards has caught 18 passes for 346 yards and one touchdown. Jones has six receptions for 115 yards and a TD.

“Zay and our other guys are going to get a lot more opportunities,” said Carr, “and I’m looking forward to them because they work so hard. …

“Roles change quickly in the NFL. And his role has changed along with the role of some other guys. But it still holds true: whatever your role, do it the best you can. It has to be like nothing ever happened. “

SANTA CLARA (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers showed off their two-quarterback system by receiving hasty touchdowns from both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance in a 34-10 exhibition win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Coach Kyle Shanahan rotated his two quarterbacks on the first two drives against the Raiders’ backups in preparation for the regular season when he plans to use both Garoppolo and rookie Lance.

Jimmy Garoppolo passes in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi’s Stadium on August 29, 2021. (Ezra Shaw / Getty Images)

Garoppolo started and was in the first three games before Lance stepped in and handed Raheem Mostert over for a 17 yard win on a zone reading game. Garoppolo returned for the next play, and both QBs got five plays on that drive that ended with Garoppolo battling for a 1-yard TD.

The quarterback move continued on the next drive, with Garoppolo converting a fourth-and-one sneaker before Lance scored two games later with a goalkeeper from 2 yards.

This ended the day for Garoppolo, who completed 4 of 7 passes for 64 yards with the two runs.

Lance stayed in the game through the third quarter, finishing 6 for 13 for 46 yards.

The Raiders took a different approach and kept most of their starters at home in Las Vegas. Nathan Peterman got his third straight game of big action. He took all but one snapshot the preseason when Marcus Mariota was nursing an injury and Derek Carr was resting.

Peterman went 18 for 29 for 175 yards with a 16 yard TD pass to Nick Bowers.

STAY AT HOME

The only projected week 1 starter on the depth map who saw action for the Raiders was linebacker Tanner Muse.

Carr, tight end Darren Waller, running backs Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake, receivers Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards as well as offensive linemen Kolton Miller, Denzelle Good and Richie Incognito are among the planned starters who had no action for the Raiders in the preseason.

READY RAHEEM

Mostert made his only preseason appearance for the 49ers and only needed one drive to show that he was ready to kick off.

Mostert got seven carries on that drive and gained 53 yards before taking the rest of the day off.

BACK TO THE BAY

The Raiders made their first trip back to the Bay Area since moving to Las Vegas last year. With the move, the NFL resumed the series of exhibitions between the Raiders and 49ers, which had been suspended since 2011, after a man was beaten in a toilet and another was shot multiple times in the parking lot of Candlestick Park.

INJURY UPDATE

Niners WR Travis Benjamin left the game with a concussion.

NEXT

Raiders: Las Vegas opens the regular season at home against Baltimore on September 13th.

49ers: San Francisco opens its regular season in Detroit on September 12th.

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers were in a bind this off-season. With the salary cap unchanged and big contracts already being given out to elite players, they needed a way to turn a little money into a big return.

So the Niners went to Las Vegas.

And – you see – things actually worked out.

The 49ers’ defensive line is the heartbeat of their team. In 2019, when San Francisco went to the Super Bowl, the Niners’ fast and furious line went eight, nine players down, and wreaked havoc on their opponents.

The Niners feel that the team’s defensive line is back to 2019 levels. Much of that confidence comes from the return of Nick Bosa and the advent of Javon Kinlaw, but part of it is getting this team serious with two – maybe now three – former Raiders players who have been cheaply signed this off-season Has depth.

“You know, we didn’t expect Arden Key and Hurst to become available, but the Raiders made a decision and we pounced on it,” said 49ers General John Lynch at the start of the training camp. “We think they are good football players who can help us. And the more depth of quality we can add at this point is, in our opinion, a good thing for us. And they know that they come here and get coached. They know we have a philosophy that enables these guys to shine and they know that they will be surrounded by quality players. ”

Lynch’s comments look prophetic as preseason game # 1 shows up on Saturday.

For those who haven’t spent much time in Napa or Alameda, Hurst was the surprise of the Niners defense at this training camp. Hurst isn’t the best all-around defensive tackle – he’s a bit smaller and his hands aren’t heavy – but he has one skill that is seriously polished and exceptionally valuable: he shoots the gap.

I’ve seen 11v11 drills too often at training camp to count – Hurst is breaking the line of scrimmage so quickly you turn to the umpires right away. No, he wasn’t offside, but now he’s behind the offensive and in the backcourt. The game is over for the offense.

Hurst may not be an all-down tackle – he won’t push back doubles or knock an anchored guard into the ground – but it’s easy to imagine he’s on the field when passing downs or if it’s a guard and center combination that the Niners want to take advantage of. He’s proven to be a great fit for the 49ers ‘all-gas, no-breaks’ front and is a significant upgrade over Solomon Thomas who has been one such player for the 49ers in recent years.

The Raiders signed Thomas last off-season and effectively voted him over Hurst. The Niners have been enthusiastic about this de facto deal so far. Meanwhile, reports from Nevada suggest Thomas may be on the chopping block.

The Raiders also ran Key – an LSU product that was considered a potential first-round pick ahead of a worrying 2017 season on the Bayou – this off-season. The Raiders picked him in the third round of the 2018 draft and threw him in the fire when they traded Khalil Mack for the bears.

To say that Key struggled with the Raiders would be an understatement for Raiders fans. It seemed that he could never translate his superior athleticism into effective rushes, only registering three sacks in 27 games.

But the film tells a different story – Key has heavy, lineman-agile hands and impressive movements, and leans over the edge. He’s a solid pass rusher when in the right position.

That wasn’t the case in Oakland or Las Vegas. Key said this weekend that he was playing a “tight-five” technique with the Raiders, which means standing face to face or just off the shoulder of the offensive tackle.

With the Niners, he’s Bosa’s backup on “Wide-Nine,” which means he’s outside the tight end.

“I wanted out of there,” Key said of the Raiders. “It was just all bad for me. Bad system. It just wasn’t right for me. I had to get out. ”

Playing Key at the 5 technique seems so ridiculous, given his speed and one-on-one ability, that I thought he exaggerated at this press conference. But I attended a couple of Raiders games for 2020 over the weekend and in fact it was Key who lined up for Snap across from the tackle snap.

However, that is the raiders’ system. We can discuss the merits of different defense fronts on another day.

For now, I’ll say that Key is in a better position for his skills and he looked like a solid plunge for the Niners in 2021.

The Niners are so excited about the Raiders’ committees that they signed another one this week – Shilique Calhoun, the third round of the Raiders in 2016. He’s facing a serious climb to reach the roster, but he could be a practice man for its San Francisco this year. But why not roll the dice again?

The Niners ‘strategy of signing the former Raiders’ defensive linemen is reminiscent of something the Warriors did in their first season at the Chase Center. It was never officially declared in a press conference or post-game huddle, but in the post-Kevin Durant era the Warriors tried to exploit the worst teams in basketball at the time – the Suns and the Timberwolves.

The Dubs signed Marquese Chriss because they were sure that his original team, the Suns, had no idea how to develop him at the age of 19. Chris has had two solid seasons for the dubs.

The Warriors later traded for Andrew Wiggins in what turned out to be number 7 in the NBA draft last month because they bet the Timberwolves weren’t competent enough to maximize Wiggins talent or avoid a bad season. You were right on both counts.

The Niners are doing the same thing to the Raiders here. You rely on talent.

They’re also betting on something I’m sure most Raiders fans will echo: the Raiders defensive coaches didn’t know what they were doing with this talent.

The Niners feel confirmed in their bets at this early point in the season. Both Hurst and Key signed one-year contracts for $ 1,045,000 – starvation wages for solid depth on the teams’ key positions.

The only question now is how much return the Niners can get on these investments and whether that win can bring them a trip to Los Angeles in February.

Many fans agreed with the Las Vegas Raiders’ decision to part ways with Right Tackle Trent Brown. He’s been called anything from “lazy” to “injury prone”, but will there be serious consequences if he walks away from him?

Brown’s stay with the Raiders was at least colorful. It seemed like there were constant drama and problems around the duel, and not for the best either. Much of it, however, was beyond his control, such as the near medical disaster when an IV accident caused air to enter his bloodstream. Even so, Brown’s advancement has the potential to come back and bite the Raiders in the rear.

The Raiders have completely revamped their offensive line this offseason, hoping to get faster and more athletic. This could end up restoring the team’s running game, which began to slide in 2020. Regardless of how you hold the trains, this unit has potential, but replacing Brown ends up on the shoulders of a rookie, Alex Leatherwood. In essence, the Raiders designed Browns replacements rather than spending on the vacant agency position. This is risky to say the least, so much so that some are calling it the worst move to organize this off-season.

The Raiders will keep their fingers crossed and hope …

The Athletic recently surveyed the NFL and tallied the worst off-season decisions of all 32 teams. Lo and behold, the raiders who made the real tackle were the intended move for Las Vegas. Vic Tafur shared his thoughts on the move, it is essentially a gamble for the Raiders.

Given how motivated Brown looked this off-season, trading doesn’t seem to have made much sense, Tafur pointed out.

“You should have kept him and paid him the $ 14 million he was due this season because Brown, 28, had already lost a ton this spring and is motivated for another big payday.”

Yeah, the man is playing for money so what, the NFL is a business. Fans saying they didn’t want Brown because he didn’t want to be a Raider is ridiculous in retrospect. If Brown was ready to dominate again in search of another big deal, why wouldn’t you milk that?

Leatherwood is now in a difficult position as a newcomer. He’ll have big footsteps to fill because let’s face it, when Brown was on the field he was one of the best.

Fair or not, the Alabama product is judged from the start, luckily it has Tom Cable running it. As for Brown, he’s likely to have a stellar season under Bill Belichick as the Raiders put their hopes in a rookie. Either the team will look like a genius or it could have dire consequences this season.
