The heavy fog that persisted across the San Francisco Bay Area for days has finally lifted, and Tuesday marks the start of warmer weather and sunnier skies with temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s. But keep your jacket handy as temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend, and there’s even a chance of rain along with some desiccating offshore winds.

On Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said there’s a 20% to 30% chance the Bay Area could see light rain.

In the first half of October, the Bay Area saw an extended spell of thick summer-like fog that blanketed the coast most mornings and pushed into inland valleys many days. The marine layer persisted for about two weeks, bringing unseasonably cooler weather and also reducing the risk of wildfires at a time of year when destructive blazes are common.

On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to start climbing as high pressure associated with warming builds; inland areas could get into the low 80s and coastal spots the mid-70s. Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week with afternoon highs in coastal areas in the 70s and inland valleys in the 80s, according to the weather service. The hottest spots could get into the 90s. Thursday is expected to be slightly cooler than Wednesday.

“We’re definitely looking at a warm-up this week as temperatures get above normal in mid-week, at least 10 to 15 degrees above normal,” said Rick Canepa, a forecaster with the weather service.

After midweek heat (mid 80s to low 90s) across the interior, be on the lookout for rain this weekend. There’s roughly a 20-30% chance we’ll see a few hundredths of rain this weekend for much of the #BayArea and #CentralCA. #cawx pic.twitter.com/egoLmGl8qR

— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) October 18, 2022

Friday is forecast to bring another shift in the weather as a cold system from the Pacific Northwest pushes into California, Canepa said.

Canepa said there’s a chance of spotty showers across the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend, especially on Saturday morning, but the system will likely have mostly dried out by the time it hits the region.

“It’s mainly going to affect the Pacific Northwest and far Northern California,” Canepa said. “It’s not looking like the rain in the Bay Area would amount to much, a few hundredths to a tenth of an inch. I’d say there’s a very slight chance to a chance of rain. That’s definitely subject to change.”

The weather service released rainfall probabilities for locations across the Bay Area this weekend. In San Jose and Livermore, there’s a 32% chance of 0.01 inch, while in Santa Rosa there’s a 24% chance of 0.01 inch.

As the system exits the region on Saturday, it could kick up some offshore winds Sunday into Monday. These desiccating winds are common in September and October and are known for fanning wildfire flames. Canepa said strong widespread offshore winds that would trigger a red flag warning due to high wildfire risk are unlikely. Coastal areas and the hills of the North Bay and East Bay are most likely to see the breezy conditions.

A trough of low-pressure was spread across the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday morning, delivering heavy drizzle to many locations, the National Weather Service said.

A weather gauge in San Francisco’s Sunset District had measured 0.05 inches of rain as of 7:30 am on Wednesday. A gauge near Dolores Park picked up 0.01 inches.

The weather service’s downtown San Francisco gauge measured 0.01 inches. Is that a record? Not quite. In 2011, the gauge hit 0.03 inches on July 13. This record could be broken later this morning, said Dalton Behringer, a forecaster with the weather service’s Monterey office.

Up to 0.01 inches fell across the East Bay hills. Half Moon Bay has seen the highest amount of precipitation so far with 0.06 inches.

Behringer said residents in the Santa Cruz Mountains reported rain in their gutters to the weather service.

“It’s a light summer rain,” Behringer said. “I wouldn’t say it’s entirely unusual, especially in coastal locations.”

Behringer said the low-pressure system pushed into Northern California from the Pacific Northwest and it’s competing with a ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin.

“There’s a battle between a ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin and a trough out over the Pacific Northwest, and that trough is currently keeping us under that cool onshore flow,” he explained. “As we move into the weekend, some of the guidance is hinting at the ridge winning and warming up.”

Temperatures will start to climb Thursday with Saturday expected to be the hottest day of the week. On Saturday, afternoon highs are forecast to be in the 90s in inland locations and the 70s along the coast.

After the sweltering weather during the work week, the San Francisco Bay Area is expected to see cooler temperatures and breezy conditions through the weekend and a chance of rain on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

The ridge of high pressure that was hunkered over California and drove up temperatures has broken down, allowing cold fronts and storm systems to reach the region.

A dry cold front sweeping Northern California on Saturday is expected to push down Bay Area temperatures and kick up winds. Afternoon highs are forecast to be in the upper 70s inland and in the upper 50s on the coast. Winds will heighten wildfire risk, especially after the heat wave that dried out vegetation, the weather service said. On Sunday, temperatures will likely continue to drop, with afternoon highs in the low 70s in inland valleys and low 50s at the coast.

A weak storm system is expected to drop down from the Pacific Northwest on Monday, arriving in the North Bay in the morning and spreading south into the central Bay Area in the afternoon, said Roger Gass, a forecaster with the weather service.

This is good news for a region that saw record-low rainfall for the period of January through March, but the projected rainfall totals are minimal and won’t put a dent in drought conditions.

“Right now, generally speaking, precipitation chances for the Bay Area are in the 40% to 60% range for Monday,” said Gass. “Most locations will see less than a tenth of an inch. Some of the coastal ranges could pick up two tenths of an inch to a quarter of an inch.”

Feb 22, 1 pm The San Francisco Bay Area could have its coldest night of the year after scattered rain showers passed through the region on Monday, ending a 44-day dry streak for the region.

The National Weather Service’s Bay Area office announced Tuesday that a “freeze warning” is in effect for the interior areas of the Bay Area, the North Bay, and the Central Coast overnight, with freezing temperatures expected in these areas between 2 am on Wednesday and 9 am on Friday.

Sub-freezing temperatures are expected during the overnight & early morning hours over the next several days. A Freeze Warning is in effect for interior areas. Take action now to prepare and check on those without adequate access to shelter, including your pets. #CAwx #BayAreaWX pic.twitter.com/mfLJxk3Ny3

Temperatures could fall into the mid-20s to low 30s in some areas. NWS forecaster Brayden Murdoch says the NWS is looking at temperatures hitting as low as 28 degrees in some areas, which, he says, signifies a “hard freeze.” A hard freeze can destroy plants, damage unprotected outdoor equipment and be a danger to people.

The NWS noted Santa Rosa and Gilroy might break record lows overnight. ABC 7 forecaster Drew Tuma also pointed out on Twitter that the low in San Francisco may drop to 39 degrees, which would be the coldest temperature in the city in the past six years.

If San Francisco drops to 39°, it’ll be the coldest night in more than 6 years. We have a chance to drop that low tonight and tomorrow night

In anticipation of the hard freeze, the weather service warns people to take action now “and check on those without adequate access to shelter, including your pets.”

“This will not be just one night of colder temperatures, but several nights in a row,” the NWS said.

Feb 22, 11 am While San Francisco got its first rain in weeks on Monday night, a storm rolled into the Lake Tahoe region and delivered the first significant snow in weeks. South Tahoe Now reports that many ski areas got a foot of snow overnight. The site also reports that “another 2-5″ of snow at lake level is possible by the time the weather system exits tonight.”

Here are some of the overnight snow totals:

Feb 22, 6:30 am Isolated showers fell through parts of the Bay Area overnight, the National Weather Service reported, ending a 44-day streak of zero precipitation from January 8 through February 20. NWS forecaster Brayden Murdoch told SFGate that “this is fairly light” but everyone in the Bay Area should get a little.

But given the long dry spell, even a little rain prompted some serious enthusiasm from the weather service, including a video posted on Twitter that celebrated the glorious .004″ of rain that fell in San Francisco.

Happy 2-22-22!
The San Francisco Bay Area was soaked in sunshine on Friday afternoon, but forecasters say much-needed rain is on the way Saturday.

A weak weather system is expected to arrive tomorrow morning and deliver light, widespread rain into the afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

“The moisture tap with this system is greater and limiting rainfall potential,” the weather service said in its forecast.

A tenth to a quarter of an inch is forecast for areas across the Bay Area, Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the weather service said.

“There is always the possibility that some locations will see less than a tenth of an inch, especially in the three inland valley locations, and some spots could see a little more than a quarter of an inch,” Gass said. “It’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get.”

Cold air aloft in the atmosphere on Saturday could cause short spurts of moderate rainfall and even hail, and there’s a 10% chance of thunderstorms, the weather service said.

“The system does have a little bit of oomph to it,” Gass said. “There’s some instability that could cause an isolated thunderstorm, but the possibility remains very low.”

Showers will subside quickly by Saturday evening and dry conditions are expected overnight, but “there will be a nip in the air,” the weather service said. Widespread 40s are forecast overnight with some inland locations even getting into the 30s.

Temperatures are expected to rebound on Sunday and Monday marks the start of an early season heat wave with high pressure building over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The weather service is forecasting temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s for inland valleys and mid-60s for coastal areas on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday will likely be the hottest days of the week, with more locations breaking into the 80s.

“Either of those days could be the peak of the warming for this event,” Gass said.

After a soggy December, the San Francisco Bay Area has seen little rain in January, with the city recording a little over a half-inch since the start of the year.

Weather conditions have been completely dry for a week, with a high-pressure ridge hunkering down along the West Coast, blocking the jet stream and putting an end to the steady stream of storms that swept California last month.

So when is the rain coming back?

National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Walbrun said a weak storm is forecast to bring light rain to Central California over the weekend, with locations such as San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara likely being a bit wet. But he doesn’t expect the system to deliver even sprinkles to the Bay Area. Long-term weather models — which are only right half the time at 10 days and beyond — show the next chance for rain in the region in the last week of January.

“I would say with high confidence through Jan. 23, there’s no chance of rain,” Walbrun said. “When we get to Jan. 24, 25, 26, there’s some signal for a chance of rain. We might start to see a pattern change. But that’s two weeks out, so confidence in the forecast is low.”

Prolonged dry spells aren’t unusual during a Bay Area winter.

Jan Null, a forecaster who runs the private forecasting service Golden Gate Weather Services, combed through San Francisco rainfall data and found that over the past 71 consecutive rainy seasons going back to 1950, the city has experienced a dry period in December or January, averaging 19 days.

Null defines a “dry period” as consecutive dry days with no rain, or consecutive days that were broken by no more than two nonconsecutive intervening days of very light rain with less than 0.08 inch recorded.

“All of these dry periods began in December or January,” he wrote in an email, “with the exception of the 1964-65 period, which was 19 days but did not begin until Feb. 6.”

Null also noted that even the very wet El Niño seasons of 1982-83 and 1997-98 had intervening dry spells of 22 and 17 days, respectively.

“We get these mid-winter dry spells,” Walbrun said. “Not unusual, but the shorter we can keep it the better, so hopefully we do end it here by the end of the month. We’ve only got so many months of winter.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The National Weather Service is reporting small amounts of rain in San Francisco Friday night, the agency tweeted.

A light rainfall of 0.02 was reported, including gusty winds with a shower band moving through the southeast, the NWS said.

Considering the dry January and February, the Bay Area has seen a fair amount of rain within the first few days of March.

The Bay Area experienced a very dry January and February — which is typically the wettest time of year.

Up until mid-February, the drought was on track to be one of the driest in California history.

As of March 3, the entire Bay Area is classified in the “severe” drought category, according to the US Drought Monitor.

A late-summer storm system over the Gulf of Alaska will move south in the coming days, bringing a chance of rain to water-starved, wildfire-prone Northern California. It may potentially deliver a sprinkling to the San Francisco Bay Area and wet many of the wildfires that have burned for weeks, the National Weather Service said.

While the forecast will likely shift later this week, as of Tuesday morning weather models showed the window for rain in the Bay Area running from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

“The greatest chance is in the North Bay,” said Jeff Lorber, a meteorologist with the weather service.

The chance for rain stands at about 20% for Napa and Sonoma counties, 15% for San Francisco and 10% in the South Bay, Lorber said.

Latest Climate Prediction Center outlook shows high probability of below normal temps and above normal predict this weekend and early next week in the PacNW as a trough moves onshore. Might some premise reach the #BayArea?? We’re keeping an eye on it. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/PU3YfRO01j

The Pacific Northwest is expected to receive a soaking of rain Friday into Saturday. It’s unclear how well the system will hold together as it pushes into the water-starved Golden State, and Lorber said these storms often fall apart as they move south.

“It will reach the Pacific Northwest and, depending on how deep this trough becomes, will determine how far south the rain goes,” he said.

California is desperate for rain as reservoir levels sink to record low levels and the vegetation on the ground is parched and highly flammable after two consecutive dry winters.

The Dixie Fire, 250 miles northeast of San Francisco, has been burning for two months and is approaching 1 million acres. The Caldor Fire led to evacuations in South Lake Tahoe. Both of these blazes could benefit from moisture.

“It is a low-confidence forecast, but the best chances would probably be over the Dixie Fire over the Caldor Fire,” said Emily Heller, a forecaster with the weather service’s Sacramento office. “The further south we go, the less probability there is. The best chances would most likely be in the Saturday to Sunday timeframe, and as of right now we’re not expecting heavy rain or thunderstorms.”

Cooler temperatures are expected later this week with rains spreading into the area Friday night and Saturday. Storm total #rainfall through the weekend is expected to range from nearly 2″ across the N Del Norte mountains to a few hundredths of an inch in S Lake County. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/Nw686Ou4Vu

— NWS Eureka (@NWSEureka) September 14, 2021

The far northwest corner of California is expected to see the most rain over the weekend event; up to 2 inches is possible in the mountains of Del Norte County. Crescent City is forecast to see 1.36 inches, Yreka 0.54 inch and Shasta 0.42 inch, the weather service’s Eureka office said.

The forecast is likely to change in coming days as weather models are often in disagreement over the first storms of the rainy season.

“With these early season storm systems, often the models are overly optimistic,” said Lorber, noting that even the slightest bit of drizzle would still be beneficial with the dry vegetation. “Any rain is good news with the really dry fuels. Moisture is really desperately needed, as we have near-record dry fuels.”
