PARADISE — Water experts are still finding traces of harmful chemicals in parts of the water systems burned by the Camp Fire and in interior plumbing more than a year after the disaster, but the cases are rare.

Fears about the contamination have been a hurdle for recovery. The water utilities say they are addressing the problem through tens of thousands of tests and hundreds of repairs.

One big question remained on the minds of residents: What about their own taps? Home plumbing is not the responsibility of the utility. Many residents paid for tests out of pocket. Now, an outside team of researchers is studying the issue with a grant.

So far, the team has found only a few cases where volatile organic compounds that are harmful to human health seened into home plumbing from the water system. Most of those cases tested largely below unsafe levels.

“We were kind of looking for those worst-case scenarios,” said Gina Solomon, the researcher leading the project. “What we found was actually really encouraging.”

Solomon presented the findings to the community at a meeting at the Paradise Alliance Church on Monday evening. Her study team includes experts from the Public Health Institute, UC San Francisco, and UC Davis. They sampled 125 structures in Paradise and Magalia in October and will continue sampling later this month.

Benzene, which has been linked to cancer, was detected in only two samples: one came from an outdoor hose bib that was unused since the fire, and the other came from inside an uninhabited home. Both were below the California regulatory limit.

Scientists are not exactly sure where benzene — which was first detected in water systems after an urban wildfire in Santa Rosa — comes from and how it spreads in a water system. One prevailing theory is that the contaminant comes from burnt plastic.

The team tested for over 100 volatile organic compounds.

Methylene chloride, a known carcinogen used in some solvents like paint and varnish removers, was also detected. It showed up at a quarter of the homes tested in Paradise. A handful of homes’ plumbing showed unsafe levels of the chemical. Paradise Irrigation District has also detected the chemical in some service laterals.

It might be formed from the burning of PVC pipes, according to some research recently unearthed by PID’s engineers. It might come from a reaction with galvanized pipes, which are more common in Paradise. It might also be a laboratory contaminant, said Solomon. So the team is re-sampling those homes to learn more.

Most commonly, they found disinfection byproducts linked to chlorine in most of the homes. The chemicals — trihalomethanes — are linked to cancer but did not surpass the regulatory limit in any of the samples and are not thought to be linked to the fire. Exposure can be limited with a water filter and with precautions like avoiding long hot showers, said Solomon.

Meanwhile, Paradise Irrigation District continues to test each service lateral to standing homes and lots that want to rebuild.

“We’re still finding the 5 percent, 2 percent that do have contamination, and it’s all over town and there’s no pattern, so it’s important that we still test,” said Sami Kader with Water Works Engineers.

A water quality committee looks over each test. More than 150 miles of main lines and 735 locations have been cleared so far. The utility is replacing service laterals to burned lots and service laterals with contamination. So far it has replaced 111.

Two weeks ago, PID approved a contract with a construction company to accelerate the repairs. The utility expects 650 laterals to be replaced by spring 2020.

Listing agent Herman Chan told SFGATE that “I spoke with a designer colleague, a San Francisco native, who told me there are only 14 single-family homes in San Francisco that have pools.” At the time of writing this article, SFGATE was unable to confirm this, but there is no doubt backyard pools are rare here — and a setup like 127 Castenada Ave. is even rarer.

If you know Joseph Eichler, you probably picture a Bay Area home with an airy atrium and light-filled rooms. What you’d probably never imagine is a concrete-shrouded condo — a towering hilltop eyesore on the Western Addition.

But the famed real estate developer had some forays into multifamily construction when he shifted his focus from single-family homes to helping build a collection of low-rise and high-rise buildings in San Francisco. One of these was 66 Cleary Court, an 18-story building that was part of the larger redevelopment of the Western Addition in the 1960s.

Today, the tall building feels almost tucked away, tucked away on a quiet street next to the much more imposing Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption. It’s gray and bare, especially against the city’s often foggy skies, and most people wouldn’t guess it was commissioned by the famous developer.

Upon entering #305, which just went on the market for $1 million, the small condo is filled with light. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors line nearly every room, and an entire living room wall overlooks a long balcony.

There is another smaller balcony in front of the dining room that flows into the kitchen. Three bedrooms all have floor to ceiling windows, and the master bedroom has an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet.

While the emphasis on natural light seems to be the only part of Eichler that made it into the blueprints, when the units come out today, they’re often advertised as “Eichlers.” “When it mattered [Eichler] High-rise buildings, they were much more general,” said Matthew Gordon Lasner, associate professor of urban studies and planning at Hunter College. “When it comes to structural considerations, there is much less room for creativity. … They are well built and well designed … but I don’t think so [66 Cleary Court] is a particularly interesting building. They don’t have what makes Eichler houses special.”

Still, listing agent Rebecca White said turnover in the building is rare, and when people buy an apartment, they spend a large part of their lives there. Unit 305 was occupied for more than 20 years by the father of Aaron and Lisa Schulman, who are selling the property after renting it more than five years after their father’s death. The siblings said their father loved the layout of the corner unit and particularly appreciated how convenient it was to so many parts of San Francisco.

The Cathedral Hill neighborhood name is the most tossed-up by real estate agents these days, but Eichler’s mission back then was to create a denser, new “neighborhood” called Laguna Heights. While a high-rise was being built at 66 Cleary Court, he had plans for three on the surrounding blocks, envisioning the next phase of American housing. “Very savvy builders could see that the suburb’s perennial expansion was coming to an end,” Lasner said. “It was part of this regional effort to push the boundaries and test the density models. … As part of that experiment, this particular building was an opportunity for Eichler to test whether high-rise buildings could work for families.”

Instead of an apartment building full of one- and two-bedroom studios, a building with only three bedrooms that are spacious is somewhat revolutionary, Lasner said.

There were also some unique amenities that remain today. There is radiant heating in the floors and the building has 24 hour security and a common area with a playground, basketball court, picnic tables and a BBQ area.

While 66 Cleary was being built in 1963, Eichler also undertook other projects in the city, including townhouses in Diamond Heights, the Geneva Terraces and Geneva Towers (which were imploded in May 1998) in Visitacion Valley, and the Summit on Russian Hill. While none of these buildings were considered his most successful projects — some would even say they bankrupted Eichler Homes — they were a reexamination of urban density and affordable housing that remains a talking point to this day.

“It’s a hugely important project, but it’s not on the radar of American housing history,” Lasner said. “It is truly a project that uniquely demonstrates the feasibility of density decades before we flocked to cities again. Historically, it’s a really interesting project. It was decades ahead of its time in a way.”

It’s been a long time since the Houston Texans beat the 49ers.

It was a rare feat for the Houston Texans to beat the San Francisco 49ers in a regular season NFL game as it happened only once in four chances in the history of the Texans franchise.

The Texans are 1-3 total of all time in the game against the 49ers, and this Sunday it will be only the fifth clash between the two franchises, with the game taking place at Levi’s Stadium.

Houston hasn’t beaten the 49ers since 2009 (with a 24-21 score in Houston), and back then players like Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels and Kevin Walter all played offensively for the Texans.

That win was so long ago that Brian Cushing led the Texans in duels at eight that October day and Mario Williams had a sack.

Houston Texans: Will 2 Rookie Quarterbacks Face Off?

Looking forward to this Sunday if it’s a rookie quarterback fight, how much fun would that be?

The Texans are set to start Davis Mills, who has improved his overall game in recent games, and if the 49ers can’t have Jimmy Garoppolo, who didn’t train on Thursday with a thumb injury, it will be rookie Trey Lance under the middle.

In three games in which he threw a pass, Lance is 25 out of 48 for 354 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception. He last threw a pass in week 5.

Mills had a unique season in which he was forced to play in Week 2 when Starter went 0-6, returned to the bench when Tyrod Taylor was healthy, was put in a game by Taylor because of a bad play, and now has was called the starter over a healthy Taylor.

Throughout the ’21 season, Mills has thrown 2,200 yards with 12 touchdown passes and nine interceptions, with a 2-7 starter record.

In weeks 14-16, since being named a starter over Taylor, Mills has five touchdown passes and only one interception. He has two more games, including this week against the 49ers, to prove he should remain the starter for the franchise’s evolution.

Don’t expect the Texans to fold on what’s at stake for Mills, but this game is important for the 49ers as well as they still have hopes of making the playoffs.

So the Houston Texans have their best chance of winning a game against San Francisco since 2009, and a big aspect of that game will be the performance of rookie quarterback Mills as he seeks to lead the Texans to their fifth win of the season.

After years of searching, the Alexander Valley truffle farmer Seth Angerer and his loyal truffle dog Leo have found out what the Angerer family is claims to be “the first cultivated truffle found in the Alexander Valley”. Seth was reportedly “up and down his family’s hazelnut plantations in Geyserville” last week when he came across the “Sonoma County’s 5.03 ounce black melanosporum.” Says his father Fran: “We waited nine years and eight months, and we didn’t find anything. Every year we get discouraged. “Sonoma Magazine reports that” the truffle hunting season typically runs from January to March, so an early truffle in November was an especially exciting find for the angerers.
