A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, shaking buildings and marking the strongest quake the region has seen in eight years.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 11:42 am local time about 12 miles east of San Jose at a depth of about 4 miles. The area is about 40 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco.

The earthquake was the largest the Bay Area had experienced in years, according to USGS data and seismologist Lucy Jones. The last notable quake was a 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck near Napa in 2014.

Jones told KNTV-TV the quake happened on the Calaveras fault, one of eight major faults in the Bay Area and a branch of the San Andreas fault line.

“The Calaveras fault is one that tends to have smaller earthquakes,” Jones said.

The National Weather Service’s Bay Area office said shaking could be felt at its Monterey office. Trains for BART and Caltrain briefly paused operation before resuming at reduced speeds, the agencies tweeted.

Santa Cruz County said on Twitter that there were no significant reports of damage following the quake. There was no damage to schools and classes safely resumed, according to the county.

Nearly 100,000 people reported receiving a warning before the shaking started through California’s earthquake early warning system, according to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, or Cal OES.

“Advance notice varied from two seconds for those very near the epicenter to 18 seconds for those in San Francisco,” the agency said.

Rich Constantine, the mayor of Morgan Hill, a city next to San Jose, said he was in the kitchen of his home when the “long and steady” quake struck.

“We had a frame in the house fall, everything was shaking but once it stopped, there was no damage,” he said.

A 3.1 aftershock followed about 5 minutes after the initial earthquake, USGS said.

Tuesday’s earthquake came just a week after the 33rd anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake — a magnitude 6.9 quake that struck in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Oct. 17, 1989, just as the World Series was about to begin in San Francisco. The quake resulted in 62 deaths and caused billions of dollars in damage.

“He’s an animal” is how new San Francisco Giants pitcher Alex Cobb described playing against Los Angeles Angels generational talent Shohei Ohtani.

Alex Cobb is departing the LA Angels after signing a 2-year, $20 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. Cobb, who spent last season pitching for the Angels in Anaheim, knows firsthand how good his former teammate Ohtani is.

“Watching him hit a first-pitch curveball out the other day in a Spring Training game gets you a little rattled. He’s an animal. Another reason I went to the NL. Of course, I pulled him up first,” said Cobb when referring to his decision to sign with the Giants. The Giants and Angels will not play each other this year as the former plays in the National League, while the latter plays in the American League.

Shohei Ohtani really is an animal

Alex Cobb had an impressive season in his own right in 2021. The right-handed pitcher had an ERA of 3.76, a WHIP of just above 1.2 and went with eight wins and three losses on the season.

Ohtani, who is a decade Cobb’s junior, outdid his departing teammate. The Japanese whiz finished the season with a record of 9-2. He also bested Alex Cobb’s ERA and WHIP for a team-best 3.18 and 1.0 respectively.

What makes Ohtani so notable is that he is just as much a menace to opposing pitchers as he is to opposing batters. While simultaneously logging the aforemnioned pitching stats, Shohei Ohtani hit 46 home runs and 100 RBIs. He also had an OPS of .965, making him the stuff of pitcher nightmares.

Cobb faced the Angels in Spring Training on Sunday. He pitched 3.1 innings and didn’t allow a run. He faced Ohtani twice, walking him intentionally in both instances. It may be a while before the two players see each other again. Like many of us, Alex Cobb will only watch and see if Shohei Ohtani reaches the potential we all know he has to become one of the best players in baseball today.

1 dead and another injured in shooting in San Francisco Haight-Ashbury

Two men were shot dead and one killed on Thursday afternoon in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. Neighbors and business owners report that they have recently noticed an increase in gun violence and other types of crime in the area.

SAN FRANCISCO – A double gunfight in San Francisco Thursday left one dead and another injured, and the midday murder near the busy Haight Street and Masonic Avenue intersection rocked the violence-rising neighborhood.

“We didn’t hear anything, it came out of nowhere,” said Gregory Kazzouh, a clerk who was startled by the sudden gunfire outside his window.

Bystanders rushed to take cover in the market, and Kazzouh called 911.

Outside he could see someone bleeding on the sidewalk.

“To be honest, it’s sad that this neighbor is changing for the worse,” said Kazzouh, who grew up in Haight.

“It wasn’t like that a few years ago and it’s changing. I do not like it.”

When investigators were working on the crime scene, the victim’s body was covered with a yellow tarpaulin.

Some of his relatives arrived at the police compound, clearly desperate and embraced with tears.

A second man was hit in the volley of shots and hospitalized, but details of the suspect and motive remained scarce.

“I can’t say that people knew each other, we just don’t know that yet,” said Captain Christopher Pedrini of the SFPD’s parking station.

Pedrini hears from residents alarmed that the once vibrant Upper Haight is now being ravaged by car and home break-ins and worse.

“In general, it’s a pretty quiet, peaceful neighborhood, although we’ve had some incidents lately that made people worry,” said Pedrini.

Many traders in the corridor are demanding more police presence.

“There was shooting down here two weeks ago and a guy was stabbed to death a few weeks ago,” said Mike Bishop, who runs a retail store. “The police come and go because they don’t like DA Chesa Boudin. They don’t think he’s going to prosecute anyone, so they don’t want to do anything.”

Bishop heard the shots from his shop and came running.

“If the police were around, the guy might have waited and taken him to the next block,” Bishop said, “but a police presence is preventive policing and that’s what we ask, we need it because we get it be shot. “

When the scene was cleared and the road cleared, a US Mail truck was towed away with its tire flattened by a flying bullet.

And in the evening, the people driving home were largely unsuspecting when they passed a small sidewalk memorial to the victim, in which about a dozen candles were burning.

“It shakes my sense of security, but my sense of security has been shaken since Covid started, so this is what it is,” said Dustin Espersen, a 15-year-old Haight-Ashbury resident who is soon moving to New York.

“I tell people they are more aware of those around them,” said Aaron Sanders, who has lived in the neighborhood since 1968.

“I could have been here at the wrong time and it happens too often, too many people, it’s like everyone’s a little bit scared,” said Sanders.

The last shooting in the area two weeks ago was a block away in Haight and Central.

One person was injured in the incident and several parked cars and a coffee shop were riddled with bullets.

Police blamed gang tensions for the violence, and it is possible that the outbreak was related to gangs on Thursday.
