Updated: 5:45pm Wednesday

The following is an update from the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services:

Subway was reopened at approximately 4:30 pm (Wednesday) after verification that the plumbing was repaired.

Previously

The Subway sandwich shop on Fourth Street in Eureka was closed Tuesday after food inspectors found an “inoperable toilet and standing wastewater” in the establishment’s bathroom.

Subway is closed until its plumbing is repaired.

“Due to (a) lack of operable toilet available for food employees, the facility must cease operation and (the) permit to operate is suspended by this office,” a report released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services stated.

Subway has 15 days to request a hearing on the issue.

“A food facility shall not operate if there is sewage overflowing or backing up in the food facility or there are no operable toilets available for food employees,” the report states. “This is an imminent health hazard and major violation that requires reinspection.”

The inspector also saw a “mold-like substance” on the soda machine drainboard. It also noted, “ice buildup in the interior of the freezer” noting servicing was needed.

For decades, people have been coming to the Skatin’ Place, a closed-off section of Sixth Avenue in Golden Gate Park, to roller-skate and roller-blade along to music.

As David Miles, the founder of the Church of 8 Wheels known as the “Godfather of Skate,” says, “It’s as much a part of the park experience as going to the museum.”

But on Friday morning, after a few extended closures over the past four months, the Skatin’ Place reopened with a new look. A large-scale mural, paying homage to the area’s decades-long history as a meeting space for skaters, now covers the asphalt, defining it as a dedicated spot for the rollerskating community. There’s a new asphalt slab, too, in place of the old one that had experienced years of wear and tear.

“It is an amazing, iconic place and it deserved an amazing makeover,” said Tamara Aparton, a spokesperson for San Francisco Recreation and Park. “It’s just been generations of skaters there, and it’s a really remarkable, welcoming, inclusive community.

“We want to make sure that it’s there for generations to come.”

David Miles (center), “the Godfather of Skate,” and his cohorts gather at the roller skate area in Golden Gate Park to celebrate its new mural.

Jana Asenbrennerova/Special to The Chronicle

The mural was designed by Aimee Bruckner, a San Francisco artist, who has been part of the city’s skate scene for more than a decade. “Psychedelic Golden Gate Skate,” as the piece is called, takes the form of a color-filled 28-by-93-foot oval. The mural, Bruckner says, makes a subtle nod to the Golden Gate Bridge, with lava-lamp-like waves coming in from either side that evoke the city’s countercultural history. Naturally, she also put a roller skate right at the center.

Bruckner said she kept the design “cool and unique” but also “not so crazy that when you’re out there you get disoriented.” And she wanted to be sure the mural didn’t overshadow the community that skates there — over the years people have shown up to skate in furry leg warmers and rainbow sequins and butterfly wings.

“It’s the people and the skaters that bring all the color to this area,” she said. “I don’t want to compete with all the great styles and fashions.”

The park means a lot for Bruckner, in part because she found skating at a time when she was dealing with losing the use of her hand and struggling to figure out how to move forward in her art practice. Skating offered at “alternative creative outlet” — “a bit of an escape back to a simpler time, a funner time.” She’s since found a path forward with her art, and the mural, for her, symbolizes “a really great combination of the two worlds.”

As with most things skate-related in San Francisco, the mural — and the Skatin’ Place, too, really — can be traced back to Miles.

Skating has always had a home in Golden Gate Park — John McLaren, the park’s first superintendent, incorporated a rink into the Children’s Playground in 1891 — but the sport really hit its stride in the ’70s. (So much so that it briefly sparked a public panic.)

By the mid ’80s, though, the number of skaters was declining and Miles saw Sixth Avenue as a place to create a protected home for the community. He says he spoke to the city in 1985 about keeping it a street (rather than tearing it up and planting grass) while also keeping it closed off to cars. What started as a 30-day trial became a 60-day trial and then a 90-day trial, and eventually it stuck. “It’s just become better and better, year after year.”

“It’s the happiest place in Golden Gate Park,” Miles says. “You have the whole mixture of everybody who makes the city great. It’s everything that San Francisco is.”

Skaters show their moves at Golden Gate Park’s Skatin’ Place.

Jana Asenbrennerova/Special to The Chronicle

When Miles heard that the city would be laying down new asphalt, he pitched the idea of the mural. After some public meetings and the blessing of the park department and the city’s arts commission, it was a done deal. (Recreation and Park paid for the concrete; Bruckner donated her time working on the piece.)

At a time when rinks are closing, Miles said, it’s clear the future of skating is outside.

“I believe you should have a spot like this in every city,” he said. “It’s really become a source of pride for people.”

Miles and the park department are planning an event from 11 am to noon Saturday to really celebrate the Skatin’ Place and its new look. But he’s pretty sure it will be full well before that.

Scrolling through Instagram on a recent Tuesday, Kevin Diedrich said one image caused him to pause. His award-winning bar, Pacific Cocktail Haven, appeared just as it used to on-screen. It had been a year since an early morning fire triggered by electrical issues forced the celebrated watering hole to temporarily close.

“Last week was our one-year anniversary on Feb. 22,” Diedrich told SFGATE in early March. “It showed up in my Instagram feed … and it was tough. There was so much blood, sweat and tears that went into that place.”

Last February, Diedrich was stirred awake around 3 am by the firm buzz of an incoming call. On the other line, a loyal PCH customer frantically cried, “Kev! Kevin! Your bar is on fire. You’ve got to get down here.” It’s a call Diedrich will never forget as he described the difficult moment to SFGATE after the fire was extinguished. Diedrich then grabbed his belongings and sped to his bar, just a few blocks away from his home , and was confronted with every business owner’s worst nightmare.

Thick, black smoke billowed from the structure as fire crews actively worked to get the blaze under control. By 4 am, the fire was out but it was far too late for the Lower Nob Hill bar that endured severe structural damage. The fire also destroyed all the existing bar equipment, including funky glassware gifted to the bar by customers and Diedrich’s personal collection of rare liquor bottles amassed at conventions or on his travels abroad over the past 10 years.

Owner Kevin Diedrich poses with his signature Thrilla in Manila cocktail at the new location of the Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022. The bar is reopening in a new location after being closed for more than a year following a destructive fire in February 2021.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

“The equipment wasn’t really a concern because that can always be replaced,” Diedrich said. “We had a nice collection of mugs that people would bring from their travels and we would put them up on the beam. Those are things we can’t replace. I think the liquor was the hardest thing for me because they don’t make a lot of these bottles any more. But, at the end of the day, it’s just alcohol and no one was hurt.”

Five years of business had vanished in a moment, but Diedrich, an eternal optimist, wouldn’t let the fire crush his fighting spirit. Nearly a year after the incident, Diedrich, along with business partners Andy Chun and Jan Wiginton, looks forward to reopening the bar March 16 — just three doors down from its original home.

PCH will shift from the bar’s former moody atmosphere at its previous location and welcome guests into a new bright and warm space at 550 Sutter St. Dozens of lights suspended from the ceiling will illuminate exposed brick and a sundry of tropical plants positioned throughout the space. It’s a look Diedrich describes as “subtly tropical” but “not over the top.”

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/24/50/17/22184946/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="The new interior location for Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

The larger PCH will also offer more wiggle room to comfortably host about 100 customers at max capacity where it can avoid the bottleneck issue often experienced at the former building. But among the greatest features PCH will gain, especially at the two-year pandemic mark, is a gated courtyard positioned by the storefront that Diedrich said is a “game-changer.”

“The biggest thing that attracted us to the building was having this gated courtyard in front of the sidewalk,” he said. “That’s something to be very excited about.”

Securing a new home for PCH was a combination of perseverance, good luck and a connection with the landlord at the new site. The latter came during the pandemic, when PCH was allowed to use the courtyard to seat customers for outdoor service, in addition to the four parklets PCH already owned.

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/24/50/17/22184949/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="A live plant wall along the exterior seating at the new location for Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

After the fire, Diedrich lost 100% of his equipment and inventory, which resulted in about $430,000 of total losses. He said his insurance only covered $230,000. It was yet another blow for Diedrich, but with the help of a friend, PCH was able to raise an additional $53,000 of donations on GoFundMe that helped pay for staff wages. The stress of it all had Diedrich and his team weighing their options, even entertaining the ugly idea of calling it quits. But he was resolute. Remaining closed wasn’t an option.

“I’m just the type of person who just doesn’t back down on a fight,” Diedrich said. “PCH was my first bar — my baby. So, I said, ‘Let’s buckle down and see what we can do.’”

Determined to stay within Lower Nob Hill, Diedrich and the team reached out to the landlord at 550 Sutter St. to ask about setting up a bar and eventually struck a deal that will bring PCH, which was dubbed the “Best American Cocktail Bar” in the 2020 Spirited Awards, back.

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/24/50/17/22184954/9/1200x0.jpg" alt="A photograph of the old location of Pacific Cocktail Haven was on the wall of the new location in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

“We had looked at other spaces around the city, but they just didn’t speak to me personally,” Diedrich said. “So, it just happened to work out and we were very fortunate to stay on the block. Our main goal was to stay in this neighborhood.”

PCH’s return comes two years after San Francisco announced shelter-in-place orders on March 16, 2020, and in the aftermath of pandemic closures that shuttered dozens of San Francisco bars and restaurants within the last year alone.

When PCH opened in 2016, it was surrounded by neighboring businesses such as Hopwater, Summer Place, Hogwash and Liholiho Yacht Club. Each has experienced temporary or permanent closures.

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/24/50/17/22184945/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="Drinks line the shelves behind the bar behind the new location for Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

While there is some concern on Diedrich’s part regarding the empty storefronts nearby, he also said he believes the timing is right. If his other bar, Kona’s Street Market in SoMa, is any indicator, people are coming back.

“Business has been picking up the last week, so that’s definitely a good sign,” he said about Kona’s Street Market. “People are out and about and getting comfortable.”

Diedrich admits that, in many ways, reopening PCH feels like he’s debuting a different bar. That sentiment comes in part from the new space, but also due to a fresh set of bartenders and staff. During the pandemic, many of his veteran bartenders either shifted to different roles within hospitality or left the industry altogether. It resulted in 95% new talent at PCH, with the exception of bar manager Francis Stansky, who’s stayed on board since day one.

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/24/50/20/22184963/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="Owner Kevin Diedrich pours one of his signature Thrilla in Manila cocktails at Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco on Mar. 11, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

Stansky and Diedrich are leading the charge with intense training that focuses on teaching the staff how to fashion the bar’s famous drinks, among other aspects of running the business efficiently. For now, PCH plans to maintain its existing Rolodex of cocktails inspired by bold Asian flavors, so guests new and old can taste standbys like the miso old-fashioned, Thrilla in Manila and Kung Fu Pandan, among other classic bar staples. Eventually, PCH plans to add more creative libations down the road.

It’s been a roller coaster of a year for Diedrich who kept the momentum going with PCH pop-ups and road tours to Fresno and Las Vegas to keep the brand alive. With Wednesday’s reopening, Diedrich said he and his staff are ready for PCH 2.0.

The San Francisco Unified School District reopened campus on Monday for the beginning of the 2021-22 school year with applicable COVID-19 protocols.

Approximately 50,000 students and 10,000 teachers and staff were back for in-person lessons after more than a year of mostly virtual lessons.

The return to school came with an entirely different look due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Some of the health protocols included the following:

All employees must be fully vaccinated or have weekly tests by September 7; the district is considering a vaccination mandate for students aged 12 and over.

Students must self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms every day and wear a mask at all times.

All classrooms will be equipped with air purifiers.

Although some were nervous about returning, there was also some excitement.

The San Francisco Unified School District reopened campus on Monday for the beginning of the 2021-22 school year with applicable COVID-19 protocols. Cierra Johnson reports.

“The most exciting time,” said kindergarten teacher Lauren Goss. “We are happy to have them and love that they are excited to learn and families are ready to rejoin the community and help the students.”

I look forward to joining our community and city as we welcome our children back to school! We had to get our young people back to their classrooms where they will get the personal learning they deserve and we did! I wish all of our students a nice first day! #firstdayofschool pic.twitter.com/YpTABNGect

– London Breed (@LondonBreed) August 16, 2021

The Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, expressed excitement at the students’ return to the classroom, stressing that “It is important that children also have the ability to socialize, be with and in one another with other children To learn classrooms, “she said,” what do we? don’t want to do is that their mental health continues to decline. “

San Francisco Unified was just one of the few school districts in the Bay Area that resumed face-to-face classes on Monday. Others were West Contra Costa Unified, Berkeley Unified, Dublin Unified, and Vallejo Unified. It was also move-in day at UC Berkeley.

For parents in San Francisco who were still concerned about COVID-19 or the Delta variant and weren’t quite ready to get their kids back to the classroom, the district still offered an online learning option. These students would still have the option to return to campus when they are ready.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – People across the Bay Area are trying hard to get retested for coronavirus due to the Delta variant, but many find it not that easy to get a test appointment this time around.

“Appointment Only” signs are clearly posted on San Francisco’s newest high volume test site, which reopened Wednesday. The site on the 7th and Brannan can test 500 people a day.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Cache fire destroys dozens of homes, burns 80 acres in Lake County

But many are trying to get in and claim they urgently need to get tested anyway.

“Now I have to wait a couple of weeks until I’m free and get it ready. It’s kind of stupid, “said the San Francisco resident Mark.

The city’s test map shows some locations with drop-in availability, but opening times are often limited. Getting to a more distant location can be a logistical challenge.

“I was worried about getting a test. I am vaccinated. I don’t have a lot of time because I work a lot, ”said Mark.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health wants large health care providers to do more to offer testing during the surge in demand.

“I’ve had some symptoms like a sore throat and tiredness, so I just go in to make sure,” said a San Francisco resident who called her Christine.

Health officials are encouraging people – including travelers – to get tested by health care providers or buy test kits at home instead of using city websites.

“Every time we set up something for the public or for public consumption and try to keep the barrier down, we run the risk of people using it who may have other options,” said Dr. Andrea Tenner of the San Francisco Department of Healthcare.

Nancy and John Taylor, who were visiting from abroad, planned ahead and made appointments.

“It was all part of what we do every time we travel and when we are with our grandchildren. We make sure we get tested, ”said Nancy Taylor.

“Delta variant made it difficult. We’re vaccinated too, ”said John Taylor.

The city says it tests five to ten times what each of the private health systems do on a daily basis.

“We have to work together to make sure we can deliver the services people need to keep them going,” said Dr. Tenner.

In San Francisco, the number of daily tests has doubled since July, approaching the city’s capacity of 5,000 per day.

In San Francisco, the Clift, now known as The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel, recently reopened after a complete renovation by Gensler. The design team was inspired by the hotel’s centuries-old history and architectural elements found in the original 1915 drawings.

Every room in the hotel, from the lobby to the guest rooms, was given a lighter color palette of white, gray and metallic accents.

The Spanish suite, part of the original residence of the hotel’s first owner, Frederick Clift, has also been renovated. The outside deck is now enclosed to create additional event space. It also has new windows that blend in with the existing exterior.

The artwork for the guest rooms and corridors was inspired by the 1915 Pan American Pacific International Expositions, which show images of the structures erected for the event. (The paintings were discovered in the warehouse.) They have been renovated and placed in their original locations. The design team had the exhibition poster printed on a mirror and placed in an antique frame on the elevator walkway.

The Redwood Room has been refreshed with new seating and recessed lighting while maintaining the classic Art Deco style. The room also received original Gustav Klimt paintings that were found on site and have been restored.

Fredericks, a cafe that has been redesigned and replaced in its original location on the first level, has a black and white floor that was first seen in the room in the 1920s.

The facade will be restored and the building will be equipped with all new electrical, sanitary and mechanical systems.

Coming back as a church was a moving moment for many.

Organ music echoed in the cathedral banner, but this time there was a person in the bank.

“It feels a bit like a reunion, doesn’t it? It’s back to normal, ”said Regina Walton, a Grace parishioner.

Walton greeted the members.

Fourteen months after Grace was forced to close the door due to a pandemic, indoor personal worship was revived.

In 2020, Valerie Crane Dorfman spoke to her while watching a live stream of Grace’s Easter service from her home. For them, the return to the cathedral on Sunday was more than spiritual.

“I’m excited, emotional, and tearful. I feel the energy. It’s beautiful, ”said Dorfman.

Bishop Mark Andras got emotional and thanked the members who had stayed home during the pandemic.

“You have protected each other and your neighbors, you have literally saved lives,” said Bishop Andras.

Relationship: After June 15, CA will remove all capacity constraints and physical removal requirements

The service was still streamed live for those who are not used to coming back yet. However, those who came needed a face mask and social distance.

Only 200 people can enter the cathedral, which normally seats 2,000 people. Prior reservation was therefore required.

Grace had to close the door twice now. The first was during the 1918 Spanish flu, which resumed twice.

“I think this is a great celebration of the end of COVID,” said Stephen Bensch of Berkeley.

For many it was a return to Nob Hill.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – On Pentecost Sunday, the Christian Church’s birthday, the massive Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco celebrated something of a rebirth and opened its doors to worshipers for the first time since the pandemic began.

There is a tradition at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco that the ornate Ghiberti front doors remain closed except on special occasions or when the bishop is visiting. On Sunday both conditions were met and the doors were wide open.

CONTINUE READING: Frustrated San Francisco crime victims are demanding that DA Boudin step up enforcement or stand aside

Bishop Marc Andrus presided over Sunday Mass when the cathedral welcomed its congregation for the first time in more than 14 months.

“We saw it on Zoom every Sunday, but this is a great day to see everyone together,” said longtime parishioner Toye Moses. “God must be praised that we are alive today.”

During his sermon, the bishop thanked the people for their patience.

The bishop’s voice broke with emotion as he thanked the people for their patience.

“I am so thankful to you. You protected yourself and your neighbors. You literally saved lives, ”said Bishop Andurs.

CONTINUE READING: Oakland Coliseum bulk vaccination facility closes after administration of more than 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses

The masks were kept on and the only singing came from the cathedral’s male choir, but just being in the building with its stained glass windows and high ceiling inspired a feeling you can’t get from Zoom.

“It’s great! And for me the spirit and the height of the building is a nice, strong feeling,” said Linda Rae Hardwick, who was visiting on Sunday.

That is the intention. The cavernous interior, the huge historical murals, the larger-than-life statues, says the bishop, they are all meant to make people feel small – to remind them that there is something bigger out there.

“Everything comes together in this building. It gives us a vision of harmony, beauty and space, which is important, the idea that there is a reality of love that is greater than us, greater than the problems we face, ”he explained.

After the service, the congregation reported outside to receive communion on the front steps. It may have been a safety precaution for COVID-19, but it was also a reminder that while you can get inspiration inside the church walls, you usually have to go outside to help others.

“A lot of people have been under great stress and stress this year,” said parishioner Alma Robinson. “We hope that we will be able to be a better community, then be a better country.”

MORE NEWS: Residents evicted in 2-alarm fire in Oakland Apartment Building
