New research shows that nearly half a million households in the United States, mostly and perhaps surprisingly urban, lack proper plumbing, according to The Guardian.

The data, compiled from U.S. Census Bureau statistics by the Plumbing Poverty Project (PPP), a collaboration between the University of Arizona and King's College London, and released Monday, found that renters and people of color even in some parts of the country In the wealthiest cities, people are more likely to live in a home without running water or flush toilets.

According to The Guardian, the problem was particularly severe in San Francisco, where nearly 15,000 families live without a functioning plumbing system. San Francisco also has the third-most billionaires of any city in the world, the outlet noted.

Data also showed that in 2017, black people made up 9 percent of San Francisco's population, but 17 percent of homes without indoor plumbing, The Guardian reported.

“San Francisco's history of plumbing poverty is inextricably linked to unaffordable housing, declining incomes, changes in California's post-recession rental sector, and racial wealth gaps fueled by a type of 'anti-black urbanism' that has either driven black .” “San Franciscans are being relocated to more precarious housing or leaving the Bay entirely,” Katie Meehan, lead researcher on the PPP and professor of environment and society at King's College London, told The Guardian.

San Francisco renters make up less than half of households in the city's metropolitan area, but nearly 90 percent of homes without working plumbing, The Guardian reported.

The research also showed that cities like Milwaukee, San Antonio, Phoenix, Seattle and Cleveland made little to no progress in improving their sanitation problems between 2000 and 2017. According to The Guardian, there are more than 3,000 households in all five cities without proper plumbing.

“It's not just that the gap between water-rich and water-poor in America is widening, but also because it's being driven by a housing sector that lacks any safety net for working families, particularly households of color, that are stretching astronomically “We can’t afford the prices of San Francisco, Seattle or now even Portland,” Meehan said.

The growing construction sector is notably driving the heating ventilation and air conditioning market growth. The construction sector plays a major role in driving the demand for HVAC systems. With the increase in the construction of commercial and residential buildings, the demand for HVAC equipment and services has been increasing, thereby driving the growth of the global Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) market. The construction industry is expanding significantly across the globe. There are a lot of factors leading to the expansion of the construction industry. APAC is the major market for construction and is expected to grow at the highest rate during the forecast period. The primary reason for the growth is the ongoing developments in the infrastructure and real estate sectors in the region. The commercial building sector has seen an upswing in office construction activities, particularly for the technology and finance firms. This is due to an increase in private investments. Similarly, hotel and hospital construction activities will propel the demand for HVAC systems.

This storied San Francisco home might be half finished, but it’s certainly full of history.

Members of the Pacific Palisades community will likely know the architectural significance of this particular Tudor Gothic Revival mansion. For the unsed, here’s the skinny: The landmark Tobin House in the Bay Area was built in 1915 for Michael H. de Young, a journalist and the founder of the San Francisco Chronicle. Now, the last remnant of his medieval-looking estate has just been listed for $13.85 million.

More than a century ago, de Young commissioned architect Willis Polk to construct the stately California property. It was initially designed to be two adjacent homes, one for each of his daughters. The current residence was meant to be built alongside a twin house that was connected via an archway, but the right side was never completed. No one knows for sure what caused Polk to stop halfway through, although local folklore suggests de Young’s daughter Helen wanted to remain in her own estate.

“Anyone who has been in this part of San Francisco for a long time has noticed this home’s beauty,” listing agent Stacey Caen of Sotheby’s International Realty told the Wall Street Journal. “The incomplete arch makes people wonder what could have been.”

The sellers, husband-and-wife duo Anthony and Celeste Meier, bought the Tobin House in 2004 for roughly $6.5 million and carried out nearly $5 million worth of renovations. Currently, the couple runs an art gallery on the first floor. “As a stand-alone, it’s a beautiful piece of sculpture,” Anthony said.

The 8,990-square-foot home has five bedrooms and five bathrooms spread across its four stories. While the exterior comes off as foreboding thanks to its gray concrete plaster facade and copper chimney stacks, the inside tells a much brighter story. There are diamond-patterned lead windows that let in ample amounts of natural light in the living room. In addition, the third-floor sitting area features a vaulted ceiling with a skylight. The modern floor plan also includes a wine room, a gym, a gourmet chef’s kitchen, a walkout terrace and a large library.

If you’re wondering why the couple has chosen to part ways with the historic property, it’s because, like many empty nesters, they’ve decided to downsize. Their loss could be your gain.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Every night in San Francisco, more than 4,000 people sleep on the streets without any form of shelter. In the same city, tens of thousands of homes are vacant without a single person sleeping inside.

“It is devastating to realize that for every person sleeping on the streets tonight, there are 14 vacant homes in our city,” county supervisor Dean Preston said.

KRON On is streaming news live now

A new report released Thursday by the city’s Budget and Legislative Analyst Office revealed that a staggering 61,473 homes were vacant in San Francisco in 2021. The number of vacant homes skyrocketed from 40,000 in 2019 to over 60,000 in 2021 — a 52 percent increase in just two years, according to the report.

That means that an estimated 15 percent of all homes in San Francisco are empty, by far the highest rate among major cities in the country, the report found.

“In a city where the cost of housing is out of reach for most working people, and with thousands of homeless people living on our streets, it is immoral and inhumane to have tens of thousands of homes sitting empty,” said Preston. “The dramatic increase in just two years shows the dire need for policy intervention to turn these empty units into places where people can live.”

(Data courtesy the SF Budget and Legislative Analyst Office)

In addition to having the highest overall residential vacancy rate, San Francisco also has the highest share of units that are vacant for seasonal, recreational or occasional use — more than 10,000 homes – such as vacation homes.

Homes that are “For Rent” but still remain vacant increased by 142% in just two years. “This data tells us that landlords are holding out on renting their units, waiting for a market rebound so they can charge more in rent,” Preston said. “We need to incentivize them to get their units back on the market and provide housing to San Franciscans in need.”

Meanwhile, 7,754 people can’t afford rent. The city’s most recent homeless census found 4,397 San Franciscans are living on the streets and 3,357 are sleeping in shelters.

The report noted policy interventions that could help reduce the number of vacant units in San Francisco, such as a tax on vacant units.

This November, San Francisco voters will decide whether to adopt an Empty Homes Tax. The proposed law will tax owners of buildings of three units or more, where a residential unit has been vacant for more than six months in a given year. The tax rate is higher for larger units, and it increases the longer a home is kept vacant.

The report’s authors wrote, “While new housing supply can be a primary contributor to
affordability … large numbers of vacant units in cities with existing housing shortages can also impact affordability by further restricting supply.
A coalition of environmental organizations under the name Zero Waste Massachusetts released a report Thursday morning that examines the effectiveness of waste bans, and calls on officials in Massachusetts to demand stricter enforcement of existing rules.

The state Department of Environmental Protection implemented waste ban rules in 1990, prohibiting materials such as paper, cardboard, glass, metal and wood from being deposited into landfills and incinerators, which can lead to pollution and public health problems.

But the coalition’s new report claims that banned materials account for about 40% of the waste burned and buried in Massachusetts. The state disposed of 5.5 million tons of waste in 2019, and the report says more than 2 million tons of waste could have been recycled instead.

Massachusetts has only six landfills — and almost all are due to reach capacity by 2030, according to Keep Massachusetts Beautiful, a Keep America Beautiful affiliate focused on waste reduction and recycling.

“The bottom line is: this should not be hard,” said Elizabeth Saunders of Clean Water Action, which is one of the Zero Waste Massachusetts organizations. “There are many environmental problems that are incredibly complicated to solve, but this is straightforward. We could drastically reduce waste in Massachusetts by doing the basics – enforcing the long established DEP waste bans.”

The report, which was released Thursday morning, compares the implementation of Massachusetts’ ban to three municipalities — the island of Nantucket here in Massachusetts and the cities of Seattle and San Francisco — and one state, Vermont.

Nantucket developed strict waste bans in 1995. Among other strategies, the town banned traditional curbside trash bins. The Department of Public Works requires residents and waste haulers to separate waste into three streams: recycling, compost and other waste, stored in separate bins. In addition, the DPW requires that all waste be disposed of in clear bags, which makes inspections of disposed waste easier, the report says.

In 2018, the most recent reporting year, 12% of what ended up in Nantucket landfills consisted of banned materials, compared to the 40% statewide.

In each of the four areas explored in the study, officials implemented separated waste streams and education programs either for the public or for waste haulers.

Based on the study results, Zero Waste Massachusetts recommended that MassDEP better enforce the state’s ban.

The coalition called on the state agency to require waste haulers to inspect trash bins and issue warnings and financial penalties for noncompliance. The state should also devote more resources to waste ban inspections by hiring additional inspectors whose sole job is to enforce the bans, according to another recommendation.

Using Nantucket’s policies as reference, the coalition also recommends mandating the use of clear trash bags and instituting waste stream separation. Another important piece of their strategy is a multilingual public education campaign, which the report says will help all residents understand the MassDEP regulations.

MassDEP did not respond to requests for comment about its waste ban enforcement in time for publication.

Executive director of MASSPRIG, Janet Domenitz, said the report was just the beginning of a process of working with MassDEP and lawmakers to better enforce the bans.

“If you walk down the street and ask 10 people if they know what items are banned from disposal in Massachusetts, maybe one of them will know,” she said. “We can’t fix what we don’t recognize. This is our first step in outreach to everyone from the DEP to lawmakers and everyday people.”

Domenitz said Zero Waste Massachusetts wants to meet with MassDEP to discuss their recommendations, and plans to organize a webinar on the topic. Domenitz herself is on the Solid Waste Advisory Committee at the department, and said she will bring up the results of the report at their next meeting.

Additionally, she said the timing of November’s upcoming election provides the coalition with the opportunity to “reach the next group of decision makers in Massachusetts and make sure they pay attention to this issue.”

“The next governor of Massachusetts needs to make reducing waste a top priority,” said Janet Domenitz of MASSPIRG. “Disposing of waste that could be reused or recycled harms our environment and health, adds to climate change, and is literally throwing away our tax dollars which subsidize disposal. We need enforcement of these bans, and we need a more ambitious plan to make Massachusetts a zero-waste state.”

Zero Waste Massachusetts is made up of the Conservation Law Foundation, Clean Water Action, Community Action Works and MASSPIRG.

New research finds that almost half a million households in the United States, largely and perhaps surprisingly urban ones, lack proper indoor plumbing, according to The Guardian.

The data, which was compiled from US Census Bureau statistics by the Plumbing Poverty Project (PPP), a collaboration of the University of Arizona and King’s College London, and published Monday, found that renters and people of color, even in some of the country’s wealthiest cities, are more likely to be in a home without running water or toilets that flush.

The issue was found to be especially dire in San Francisco, where nearly 15,000 families live without a working plumbing system, according to The Guardian. San Francisco also has the third-most billionaires of any city in the world, the outlet noted.

Data also showed that, as of 2017, Black people made up 9 percent of San Francisco’s population but 17 percent of homes without indoor plumbing, The Guardian reported.

“The story of plumbing poverty in San Francisco is inextricably tied to unaffordable housing, declining incomes, post-recession transformations in the California rental sector, and racialized wealth gaps, fueled by a kind of ‘anti-Black urbanism’ that has either driven Black San Franciscans into more precarious housing conditions or out of the Bay entirely,” Katie Meehan, lead researcher of the PPP and professor of environment and society at King’s College London, told The Guardian.

San Francisco renters make up less than half of households in the city’s metro area but account for nearly 90 percent of homes lacking functional plumbing, The Guardian reported.

The research also showed that cities including Milwaukee, San Antonio, Phoenix, Seattle and Cleveland made little to no progress improving their plumbing issues between 2000 and 2017. All five cities have more than 3,000 households without proper plumbing, according to The Guardian.

“It’s not only that the gap between the water-rich and the water-poor is widening in America, it’s also that it’s driven by a housing sector that lacks any safety net for working families, especially households of color, that cannot afford the astronomical prices of San Francisco, Seattle, or now even Portland,” Meehan said.

New York: Obtaining running water at home is a struggle for many people in the United States, and those who lack clean water overwhelmingly come from communities of colour, non-profit DigDeep said in a report on Tuesday. More than 2.2 million people in America still live without running water and basic plumbing in their homes, and tens of millions more without adequate sanitation, said the Los Angeles-based organization devoted to bringing clean, hot and cold running water into American homes. Also Read – Delhi Rains: Water Logging and Traffic Jam in Delhi-NCR After Heavy Rainfall, Rains to Continue | watch videos

The millions of people who are adversely affected by the water access gap are overwhelmingly from communities of colour, with indigenous households 19 times more likely than white households to live without running water and Black and Latino households twice as likely, it said.

“These people spend a significant amount of their monthly income just getting the water to survive,” DigDeep’s founder and chief executive officer George McGraw was quoted by Insider as saying. “The lack of access to water leads to health issues like diabetes, cases of mental health and a pileup of bills for buying bottled water.”

The water access gap impacts communities in all 50 states, urban and rural, but the largest impacts are felt at the rural level in communities that are generally isolated, not treated by the news and not seen, according to McGraw.

Ricci Wynne posted the video on Twitter last week, writing that the students were getting off the 14 transit line on 8th and Mission Streets when they encountered what appeared to be the homeless encampment sprawled across the sidewalk.

“This is no back ally [sic],” Wynne wrote. “This is a main artery in our city that has been hijacked bye [sic] drug dealers and now it is pure filth!”

SAN FRANCISCO — Deebo Samuel, star wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers who caught more than 1,400 yards last season, has reportedly asked for a trade.

Samuel, 26, told ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington on Wednesday he asked the team to trade him. Samuel said he did not want to discuss his reasoning for the request.

Samuel, who played at South Carolina in college and was drafted in the second round by the 49ers in 2019, finished fifth in the league in receiving yards last season with 1,405 and added six touchdowns. He was one of the league’s most explosive players, notching nine catches of more than 40 yards, tied for the league lead.

A dynamic threat, Samuel also added 365 yards rushing last season and eight rushing touchdowns. Samuel finished 10th in the NFL in rushing touchdowns.

In his six career postseason games, Samuel caught 281 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 239 yards and a touchdown.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported that the 49ers wanted to pay Samuel, who is in the last year of his rookie contract. But Samuel, who skipped off-season workouts, removed the 49ers logos from his social media page and made it known he wanted to change teams.

“It’s not San Francisco not willing to do the deal, the 49ers are ready,” Schefter said at the time. “Deebo Samuel is the one who has put a halt to everything right now.”
