Companies are trying to bring employees back into the office. Early data suggests that workers still aren’t that keen.

According to a new report by Placer.ai, visits to office buildings have yet to catch up to pre-pandemic levels in such major employment centers as San Francisco, Manhattan and Chicago.

In May 2022, visits to office buildings in San Francisco were down by 67.8% as compared to three years ago, before the pandemic shuttered most of the country. Office foot traffic in New York is down 40.6% over the same period, and 45.7% in Chicago.

Placer.ai’s Office Building Index takes into account foot traffic from nearly 200 office buildings in San Francisco, Manhattan and Chicago.

The tourists are back in New York City, but employees are still holding out even as many of their bosses seek to pull them back to the office.

            Spencer Platt/Getty Images

‘They are not coming back’

After two years of working from home, many have adapted and adopted the work from home lifestyle, which has been particularly attractive given how high fuel costs have gotten. Not to mention the fact that COVID-19 is still out there.

Company chiefs are aware of the resistance.

“I have been unsuccessful, despite everything I’ve tried to do to get our people back to work,” Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks SBUX, -0.18%,
said during a New York Times event earlier this month.

“I want them back. I plead with them, I said I’d get on my knees, I’d do push-ups. Whatever you want. Come back,” Schultz said. “No — they are not coming back at the level I want them to… I realize that I’m an old-school person, and this is a different generation and I’ve been schooled by our people… We have to establish a new way of working. And I’ve embraced it.”

But early data also seem to indicate that some Americans haven’t yet fully adopted a permanent work from home lifestyle.

Last week, office occupancy hit the highest point since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, reaching 44.1%, according to Kastle Systems, which tracks key card swipe data.

Some 64% said they would consider looking for a new job if they were required to return to the office full time, according to a recent survey by ADP, a provider of human resources management software and services.

Of course, it’s a privilege for people to work from home, while so many other service workers have been showing up in person during the pandemic.

The Labor Department says only 7.4% of employees teleworked in May, down from 7.7% the month before. The Federal Reserve Board’s survey looking into Americans’ economic well-being released last month estimated a higher percentage of employees (22%) worked entirely from home.

Write to: aarthi@marketwatch.com

So read: ‘I’m very outspoken about my desire to never work in an office again’: CEOs and employees are locked in a battle of wills over returning to the office

There was a time when Señor Sisig, the popular Filipino fusion food truck, dispatched a fleet of six trucks to all corners of San Francisco throughout the week. It wasn’t uncommon to spot customers fidgeting on their phones while they queued up at the truck’s regular haunts around SoMa or FiDi neighborhoods. But that was more than two years ago, before a disappearing lunch crowd transformed the once-bustling districts into a ghost town.

The lack of customers around those enclaves eventually led co-owners Evan Kidera and Gil Payumo to re-evaluate their fleet of six and cut it down to four trucks. It also forced them to tighten their availability to serve their ever-popular California sisig burritos or crunch wraps to just a few spots around SF.

“There was nobody down there and it wasn’t even worth sending trucks down to our permitted locations, so we had to pivot,” Kidera said of his former downtown San Francisco outpost. “I think we were in a unique situation where we probably had more food trucks than anybody and to find six locations, seven days a week, for lunch and dinner was pretty much impossible.”

Customers line up at a Señor Sisig truck in 2019. During the pandemic, the popular Filipino fusion business reduced its fleet of six trucks to four as lunch crowds around San Francisco diminished.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGate.com

Kidera said that the fleet took a financial blow during the pandemic but the overall business was fortunate in that Señor Sisig had opened its first brick-and-mortar at 990 Valencia St. in the Mission District months before the shutdown. Then, a second location at 1628 Webster St. in Oakland opened in early 2021. It was a shift from Señor Sisig’s primary model, but one that pushed the business to continue to grow.

Still, running a food truck business in the Bay Area hasn’t come without its own set of glitches, despite its inherent takeout model. The dependency on lunch crowds forced some operators around the US to join third-party delivery apps or do home deliveries in suburbs, like Kona Ice of North Marin did, to stay connected with customers. It’s a trade that Matt Cohen, CEO and founder of Off the Grid, believes isn’t easy and necessitates being both “nimble and flexible.”

“Food trucks sometimes get forgotten in the challenges that they face,” Cohen told SFGATE. “You have to be able to communicate where you’re going to be and be able to get [people] to come out and support you. The ones with smaller audiences struggled more because of that.”

Off the Grid markets, now in their 12th year, are advantageous to participating vendors who, before the pandemic, could expect thousands of guests at the organization’s largest markets at Park Presidio and Fort Mason. After a two-year hiatus, Off the Grid’s Fort Mason market returns April 1.

In June 2020, Off the Grid planned a Fort Mason comeback, albeit with a smaller-scale project called Fort Mason Center Food Spot. Days after announcing the event, a spokesperson told SFGATE that it was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” but eventually launched the project at Fort Mason that same month. Throughout the pandemic, Off the Grid has kept a low profile with reduced markets and days it operated. Previously, it ran 12 different markets around the Bay Area, but Cohen estimates just about 20% returned, though more markets are anticipated to open in early April.

“Our company was founded on the idea of the power of in-person gatherings,” Cohen said. “The lack or inability to exercise that muscle for the last two years has been something like a phantom limb.”

When the market opens Friday evening, 25 vibrant trucks are expected to set up shop at one of Fort Mason’s sizeable parking lots, where guests will once again see some of the tenured food partners, like Señor Sisig and The Chairman, along with newcomers Vegan Mob , Media Noche and Papalote, plus more, which will join the existing rotation. This time around, the event will only focus on mobile vendors and not include tents, to help “maximize the potential benefit” of the food truck industry, Cohen said.

Dominic’s food truck was born out of the pandemic when owner Chris DeGrande added a truck to his business.

KRM Photography/ @karnamarie

Dominic’s, owned by Chris DeGrande, is one of the newer vendors, having joined Off the Grid beginning in November 2020. Before the pandemic, DeGrande’s background was in hosting banquets and catering large events where he served a dash of Italian and American staples. But during the summer of 2020, he decided to buy his first food truck, which would become an extension of his banquet facility, Dominic’s at Oyster Point, and one way to keep his staff employed amid some of his most challenging days.

“The food truck came about because the pandemic shut us down completely,” DeGrande said of his banquet and catering operations. “I never had [one] and it’s a great complement to what we’re doing. It was a huge help to be able to keep our employees working.”

Never in his wildest dreams did DeGrande fathom owning a mobile business. He reckoned that running banquets and catering were much easier than managing a food truck or restaurant as the number of plates needed on any given day was already accounted for by a caterer. While DeGrande views his experience in catering as an asset, especially with regards to Off the Grid, there were hard lessons along the way about operating an active food truck in the Bay Area.

DeGrande shared the vexing steps needed to run his food truck in San Francisco County, which he described as time-consuming, from clearing regulations with the fire department to applying for a number of permits. Señor Sisig’s Kidera, now a 12-year veteran, shared that a common misconception of running a business on wheels is that people assume it’s a lot easier than it appears.

The filet mignon sliders from Dominic’s food truck. Chris DeGrande, owner of Dominic’s, added a truck to his business model during the pandemic.

KRM Photography/ @karnamarie

“There’s a lot of moving pieces that make it a challenging business to run, and to run more than one, let alone six is, is a task,” Kidera said. “I look back and I’m like, ‘How did I even do six?’ That’s crazy… but you know, we’ve done it. Right now, the plan is to keep the four and continue to send those out.”

One way food truck vendors went around San Francisco’s permitting rules was to join Off the Grid, or other markets around the city, that hold lease agreements with landlords. In the case of Off the Grid, each market varies, but Cohen said he pays rent to landlords that range from specific cities to various institutions to private landowners. According to San Francisco Business Portal, food trucks that operate at Off the Grid markets must pay the organization a fee or percentage of their sales to participate.

What remains to be seen is whether the lunch crowd will come back. The answer is still unknown, at least for now, but it’s one Cohen hopes to realize with the Fort Mason homecoming.

“Fort Mason is special because of the setting,” Cohen said. “It’s the location that does the best job at capturing the spirit that we channel with every single one of our experiences. We’re really bringing back a good number of lunch markets in anticipation of people returning, at least to some extent, to work.”

DeGrande and Kidera are both excited to see the turnout at Fort Mason as they join others in the food industry who made it out the other side. Kidera, for one, is thrilled to meet many of the new operators, especially the ones who pivoted to mobile trucks amid the pandemic.

“Some of the best stuff comes out of these challenging times,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to see what the new landscape of the food truck industry is in San Francisco.”

Off the Grid returns to Fort Mason on April 1 and is scheduled to run each Friday from 5 pm to 10 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – San Francisco Pride announced this week it will return to in-person events this June for the first time since the pandemic as the nonprofit also prepares for a change in leadership this year.

“I think what stands out for me about my time here at San Francisco Pride is being really heartened by the resilience of our community of the ways we have consistently faced challenges with love and compassion,” said Outgoing Executive Director Fred Lopez.

READ MORE: Oakland City Council Approves A’s Howard Terminal Ball Park Final Environmental Impact Report

Lopez was in charge of the organization for the past two years, overseeing its journey through the COVID-19 pandemic. While the search for his successor continues, Suzanne Ford will take on that role in an interim basis.

“We’re going to step back into our greatness and we’re going to let the world know that the queer community is resilient in San Francisco and San Francisco Pride is at the center of that,” Ford told KPIX 5 on Thursday.

Community leaders say the return of a celebration in person will benefit the whole city. One estimate calculated that $357 million was generated for all of San Francisco over the two days of Pride weekend, according to the Castro Community Benefit District.

“Pride has always been a little bit like Christmas for the Castro as far as the small businesses go,” said Andrea Aiello, the executive director of the Castro CBD. “We’re back, we’re moving forward.”

READ MORE: Chabot Regional Park Officials On Lookout For Abandoned Python

While the benefit for the city is clear, the Castro District expects to see a much needed bounce for businesses who have struggled during the pandemic. Those who are located in the neighborhood say they are eager to have a safe and successful Pride celebration in 2022.

“This I think is a necessary thing for the community, to remember what it’s like to live life, and to get through the pandemic, we’ve come along way in the past two years,” said Paul Perretta, one of the owners of hot cookie “I’m a firm believer that in person is always better when it comes to celebrating with others.”

Some question if this is the right move at this time, hoping it will be safe but wonder if more time is needed to assess the current state of the pandemic.

“Bringing hundreds of thousands of people together seems a little premature,” said Louis Knox, a San Francisco resident. “I say baby steps, I say baby steps and evaluation, baby steps and evaluation because you see we’ve been here before, this is not the first time we’ve had a ‘reopening’ only to find out it’s a ‘reclosing. ‘”

Pride Weekend will be June 25 – 26 with “Love Will Keep Us Together” as the 2022 theme. Organizers say they will have more specific details to announce in another month. They hope people will donate to the organization or become a member to help fund their work.

“Everybody from the city who wants to say ‘Hey, San Francisco is open and we’re ready’ to accept people from all over the world who want to experience that sense of community and acceptance that San Francisco is known for,” Lopez said .

Some major events are returning to San Francisco, including the Lunar New Year Parade and Pride.

Organizers are happy to hold events or parades again and believe it could be an emotional return for some.

“It’s just the general consensus that the way things look at this moment that we’re going to be out on Market Street,” said Suzanne Ford.

After the pandemic canceled big in-person events, the LGBTQ+ pride celebration and parade plans to return in June.

Ford is interim executive director of San Francisco Pride and said bringing visibility to the community is important.

“I think it’s going to be one of the emotional outpourings you’ve ever seen in the city of San Francisco,” said Ford. “I really think people have a deep hunger to be together on pride weekend.”

They’re working to safely shape the celebration.

“We will be working with the city and we will make sure that our community is safe and we’re working hand in hand with any city guidelines that they issue,” said Ford.

Lunar New Year celebrations are underground too. The parade will once again wind its way through the streets this weekend in San Francisco.

It’s happening as the omicron surge fades and after indoor mask rules have eased.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade also plans to return and so does Off The Grid’s weekly Fort Mason Food Truck Market.

“It signals to me that we’re getting through this pandemic because of our vaccination rates we are not seeing the number of fatalities that we have in the past and we’re definitely in a better place,” said Mayor London Breed. “I’m really excited about what this means for San Francisco.”

But does that mean the city can stay the course?

“Well I hope so and the more people that get vaccinated and boosted will help to put us in a situation that would ease even more restrictions I think for now I think we’re doing pretty good it doesn’t mean we won’t see another surge or more challenges in the future,” said Breed.

Meantime, plans for celebrations and some normalcy are moving ahead.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Carl White expected to be greeted by a chaotic scene when he arrived at San Francisco International on Sunday for his flight home to the UK after taking his family to the Bay Area over the Thanksgiving holiday had visited.

But instead, the lines moved smoothly and there were few delays. The experience for most travelers was surprisingly stress free.

CONTINUE READING: ‘The Long Farewell’; New hope in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease

“We’ll be here probably six hours before departure – way too early,” said White. “I’m just trying to avoid the traffic on the way. Although we didn’t really come across one. “

For White and Samantha Jayasuriya, it was their first trip since the COVID pandemic started in 2020, so they just didn’t know what to expect specifically on such a busy weekend.

“We definitely had some concerns,” said Jayasuriya. “We had a great time in the US and bonded with the family we haven’t seen in two years, so that’s important.”

Kendyl Stewart said she was pleasantly surprised when she went through SFO too.

CONTINUE READING: Bay Area drivers are shocked by gas station stickers as prices continue to rise

“I honestly didn’t have any problems today,” she said. “I was expecting stress everywhere and just headaches and crowds and really wasn’t encountered.”

But Stewart has been aware of COVID and remains cautious.

“I try to stay away from the people at the airport,” she said. “When everyone is at the gates, I try not to interfere in other people’s affairs.”

The news of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron preoccupied many travelers. Starting Monday, new restrictions for travelers from South Africa and other countries will apply at airports across the country.

Travelers say they will be following the same precautions they followed during the pandemic.

“People are wearing masks, all measures are being taken, so it’s more or less okay,” said Konstantin Korodkii, who had come to the SFO from Russia on Sunday. “I think it’s similar to the Delta variant.”

Weekday ferry service to and from South San Francisco will resume on Nov. 8 after a long hiatus due to the pandemic, with officials pointing out reduced fares and an earlier service.

“We know it is important to have reliable and safe transit options from the East Bay to South San Francisco when employees return to the office. We are very pleased to be able to resume this service, ”said Thomas Hall, a spokesman for the Water Emergency Transportation Authority, the transit agency responsible for the ferry service.

The East Bay to South San Francisco ferry schedule on weekdays calls for a ferry to depart from the Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal at 6:05 a.m., 7:05 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 4:25 p.m. South San Francisco are 6:20 a.m., 7:20 a.m., 8:20 a.m. and 4:10 p.m. Arrival times in South San Francisco are 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 5:05 p.m. South San Francisco to East Bay are 7:10 AM, 3:20 PM, 4:20 PM, and 5:20 PM. The South San Francisco Terminal is located at 911 Marina Blvd.

WETA originally planned to resume service in South San Francisco in October. However, the summer surge in the Delta variant in COVID-19 cases led companies to postpone plans to return to the office from October to the New Year. Hall said many companies are aiming for employees to return to the office in January instead of October. Hall said the November service return ensures a safe and reliable public transit option rather than just a car option. Hall said WETA is focused on being flexible and agile to adapt to any other pandemic-related changes.

“We’re done predicting what’s next,” Hall said.

The return of service and planning improvements are part of WETA’s 2022 Pandemic Recovery Program, which includes a one-year service plan for lower fares on all Transbay routes to incentivize passengers. The WETA board approved the discounts from July through June 2022. Adult Clipper rates in South San Francisco were reduced from $ 8.10 before the pandemic to $ 6.75, a 17% decrease. Fares have also been reduced in Alameda / Oakland, Seaplane Lagoon, Richmond and Harbor Bay. The program improved access to ferry service as well as lunch and night service to support the economic recovery.

Hall said a longer-term change to the tariff program would be considered in the spring. The winter will provide the WETA board with more data on the long-term effects of tariff cuts in order to create incentives for drivers and to make decisions about future tariff structures. He found that the first results were very positive.

WETA doesn’t rule out adding more service as funding and rider numbers grow. It explores later times and higher frequencies to and from South San Francisco as the city continues to grow, particularly near Oyster Point. WETA is also open to connecting South San Francisco and San Francisco with ferries.

“Everything’s on the table,” said Hall.

WETA will rely on federal funding this year and in the future to provide programs and services to help drive back passenger numbers in South San Francisco and other areas.

“Without federal aid over the past two years, including ARPA, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” Hall said.

The transit agency is currently working with Redwood City and the Redwood City Port Commission on a terminal location and ferry service in the port of Redwood City on the east end of Seaport Boulevard. The proposed ferry service would connect Redwood City to San Francisco and / or Oakland. Hall said the city is currently working on a phase of the business plan, which should be completed by the end of the year, to identify funding needs and sources. It will delve deeper into the details of its operation, construction, and financing. Hall said public terminal access issues in Redwood City are still being considered, with calls for more bicycle access and housing to ensure easier accessibility. In July, the office of Congregation Speaker Tem Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, announced that the state budget has allocated $ 5 million in funding to Redwood City for the construction of the Redwood City Ferry Terminal.

It was time for Stanley, an oakRural craftsman, to return to his family in Kenya after 20 years. But there didn’t seem to be a way to save enough money for a plane ticket home while he was paying rent. So in July he gave up his place to take shelter in another, cheaper building.

But that protection fell through, and the 64-year-old has been on the streets ever since, spending his days in career centers and nights sleeping with BART. By carefully planning bus and train times, he was able to avoid sleeping on the street. With finagling credit from T-Mobile, he managed to keep his phone connected.

“It’s a mental thing to survive,” says Stanley, who asks that his last name not be published. “You have to use your brain.”

After Anna Geiduschek – a tenant of a building that Stanley used to do maintenance work on – and former friend Joe Rivano Barros became aware of his situation, they set up GoFundMe to get him a plane ticket to Kenya and promised to raise $ 800 between the two.

It attracted a lot of attention after Barros tweeted the GoFundMe link. Donors now aware of Stanley’s situation have raised more than $ 1,000. In order not to have to spend everything to survive here, Stanley – who came to Oakland in 1998 – lets Barros withhold the money to save it for life in Kenya.

But worsening medical conditions keep him here. Having diabetic neuropathy means that high blood sugar causes nerve damage throughout the body, but mostly in the legs and feet. Stanley decided a year ago to work as a handyman to prevent further long-term disabilities.

“Ultimately, we got him to realize that he was sick and needed a place to sleep,” says Geiduschek. “It’s all a wash when he’s too sick.”

Little rest and poor nutrition sent Stanley to the emergency services with dangerously high blood sugar. He says his doctor at the Tri-City Health Center in Fremont – which has a program for the homeless – wants him to stay there until medication stabilizes diabetic neuropathy. But the longer he’s on the street, the harder it gets.

“When you are hungry, you have no choice,” says Stanley, pointing to the fact that it is difficult to find healthy food when looking for your next meal.

Geiduschek and Rivano Barros have tried to help in other ways, using Stanley’s Geiduschek address for identification in California, research documents needed to get to Kenya, and a contact point for homeless services. Despite having access to the Internet, Stanley struggled to find his way around where to go or who to talk to.

“It is difficult to find services,” says Rivano Barros. “It’s not at all intuitive.”

Rivano Barros says his instincts as a former Mission Local journalist were used and he called as many people as possible for help. Stanley is now on a waiting list for shelters of over 1,000 people.

Stanley hasn’t told many people about his situation, including his grown-up children in Kenya. He doesn’t want his family to worry, nor does he want to hang out with someone he knows until he has a week to avoid ruining the relationship.

“It’s painful – you get lonely,” he says. “I don’t even know how to get back to a normal life.”

Stanley hopes to leave the country in March or April, but he’s battling cold and rain this winter. He has tried looking for odd jobs on Craigslist, but is having a hard time explaining his situation to potential employers.

Outwardly, he looks like any other resident of the Bay Area who walks from place to place with a backpack and coat. But he sees how other people look at people with more severe illnesses.

“They think the homeless are criminals,” says Stanley. “Most of them – they won’t do anything.”

First, Geiduschek says she feels like there isn’t much she can do as the Bay Area struggles to tame rising homelessness – a 2017 census found at least 7,499 residents on the streets of San Francisco alone. But even just 50 dollars can change Stanley’s week or month.

“A little help really helps a lot,” says Geiduschek. “There are actually a lot of people who are quietly homeless, and you don’t really notice that.”

CUPERTINO (CBS SF) – A surge in COVID cases fueled by the Delta variant is thwarting Silicon Valley companies’ plans to get workers back into offices.

Apple reportedly postponed plans to get most employees back to the office from September to October. Many smaller companies do the same.

CONTINUE READING: Philip Kreycik’s family is hoping to find the missing jogger in the second week

“The first concern is the type of new virus called Delta,” said Bochen Wang, who runs a small financial services startup called Zeitro.

His company only has 15 employees but is grappling with some of the same problems as the tech giants.

“We should be back on July 1st and have postponed our return to the office
plan three months later. Now it will be October or November 1st, ”said Wang.

Google had planned to bring back 60 percent of its employees for a few days a week from September. But now the schedule is in question as the company is observing what is known as a “dynamic” situation.

In the meantime, the City of San Jose is seeking the gradual return of its 6,000 employees and the reopening of the City Hall on August 2nd.

CONTINUE READING: Big rig fire blocks eastern lanes of I-80 in El Cerrito, growling traffic

“We are not currently planning to change our current plans,” said spokeswoman Vicki Day.

And this week, Santa Clara County brought back many of its 22,000 employees who were still working from home.

“We prepared ourselves by having the vaccination status of each employee determined,” said District Chairman Dr. Jeff Smith.

Smith said over 90% of the county workers are vaccinated and all
must be masked in all public areas of the district buildings.

But many public and private company employees are in no hurry to get back to the office. They hope to be able to permanently extend work from home for at least a few days a week.

“Your productivity has increased significantly,” said Zeb Feldman, a CEMA Union official who represents 2,000 people in the county.

MORE NEWS: Overcoming hesitation about COVID vaccines, myths and misinformation are becoming increasingly difficult

“You have been able to work from home successfully and we would like to push employers like the county in that direction,” Feldman said.
