As the US continues to have a surplus of protective Covid vaccines, some experts hope that a transition from the EEA to full approval status for the two mRNA vaccines will boost public confidence in them and, in turn, just increase the country’s vaccination rates It’s time to block the resurgence of Covid we’re seeing elsewhere, powered by the Delta variant.

While such a rapid upward shift can have this immediate effect, we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that the FDA will likely review the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines in record time. And their huge pool of real safety and manufacturing data doesn’t make that easy. Even so, the FDA plans to have its Covid vaccine regulatory exams take about half the time (3-4 months) it currently takes the agency to sign a priority drug / vaccine application (6 months) and only a fraction of that the time for a new application that is not accelerated (12 months).

There is no question that the agency should pick up the pace on both Pfizer and Moderna’s filings. Employers may be more willing to push for mandates once vaccines are fully approved. The Walchensee, a lake in the Bavarian Alps, is stable in the life of four generations of women from one family. With its lively weather, which intensifies and harmonizes with the stories that unfold in front of the camera, and the shadowy secrets beneath its glass surface, the lake serves both as a place and as a suitable metaphor for the ancestral story of the director Janna Ji Wonders recorded in this rousing, but somewhat overly long family album.

The film really gets going when it follows director Anna Werner’s mother and her spirited younger sister Frauke on the streets

But while the Werner women are the focus of Walchensee Forever, which examines how a single tragedy can anchor an entire family in a sadness that is difficult to escape, the film also works on a secondary level – as a firsthand account of what has passed – Counterculture movement of the 1960s and early 1970s in Germany and America.

A considerable advantage Wonders can tap into is the work of her mother, the photographer Anna Werner, whose revealing, informal portraits are a window into the worlds in which she moved. In addition, each of the women tended to self-chronicle, be it through hoarded letters, home videos or detailed diaries, which makes for a living carpet of memories. Anna Werner’s public profile – she was a member of an “experimental flat-sharing community” known as The Harem – will mean that this intimate trip will likely be most appealing to local audiences when they are familiar with Werner and her circle. Elsewhere, it should arouse further interest in the festival community, especially at specialist documentary events.

The family connection to the Walchensee was established almost a century ago when the great-grandparents of Wonders moved to the area out of mourning over the death of a child and set up a café by the water. Wonders’ soignée great-grandmother enjoyed the role of hostess, who slipped between the kitchen and the tables, immaculately coiffed and covered with jewelry.

But for her daughter Norma (who can be seen in archive footage in the film and is now a fragile 104-year-old), responsibility for the café was taken on out of a sense of duty rather than a calling. And it was a duty that weighed on her marriage to a man who was never wholly healed from his WWII experience. Asking her mother to read aloud from her father’s letter to Norma announcing their separation, Wonders opens the door to the first of many painful memories.

The film really gets going when it accompanies Anna and her spirited younger sister Frauke as they tour Mexico with dulcimer and guitar and perform traditional Bavarian yodelling. Her travels took her to the west coast of the USA, just in time to ride the wave of the 1967 “Summer Of Love”. But from the start, Frauke sought “more extreme experiences”, including peyote rituals in Mexico and psychedelic drugs in San Francisco. In the opening scene of Walchensee Forever, Wonders reveals that Frauke died young; It is a fact ominously on the horizon of a cleverly cut middle section of the film. Frauke’s death in a car accident and alleged suicide that followed a battle with mental health problems is a pivotal moment in history.

But like Anna, Walchensee Forever feels a bit unsteady after Frauke’s death. The grief leads her back to the Walchensee, but her eternal search for meaning makes her restless and restless. There is also a feeling that, despite reopening old family wounds in the film, Wonders is preserving their own experiences as a child who grew up in the tumultuous community environment. In an interview with the male member of the harem, Rainer Langhans, there is a palpable tension. And a revealing moment when another harem founder, Jutta Winkelmann, admits that the experiment was tough for the children, but that perhaps “open shock is better than repression”.

Any doubt about the star potential of Uncut Gems breakthrough talent Julia Fox should be dispelled by her effortlessly conspicuous twist as a sex cam dominatrix in PVT CHAT. She plays Scarlett, the center of an all-consuming obsession for professional online gamer Jack (Peter Vack). When Jack is convinced that he has seen Scarlett, who claims to live in San Francisco, shopping in Manhattan’s Chinatown, he tries to make a deal with her – if he can get photographic proof that she is in New York, she must accompany him to Paris for a romantic trip. Of course, the concept of romance is subjective when a relationship is filtered through multiple layers of deception and a computer screen and consists in one party paying the other to practically put cigarettes on its tongue.

Bratty attitude and rough energy to spare

Written, directed, shot and edited by Ben Hozie, better known as the front man and co-founder of the NYC art punk band Bodega, the film could be seen as a thematic accompaniment to Bodega’s debut album “Endless Scroll”. Both satirize a moment in which all connections are conveyed through a digital screen, both have a cheeky demeanor and raw energy to give away. The movie’s hip references go beyond Hozie and Fox: Buddy Duress, another Safdie Brothers alumni, gets a memorable cameo, and the score is by Austin Brown of Parquet Courts. Deliberately unpolished in its approach and happily uninhibited when it comes to sexual niche practices – less mumblecore than mumblehardcore – the film is intended to arouse interest beyond the festival circle. Because of its themes, it is particularly suitable for a VOD platform, but art-house distribution is out of the question.

The main challenge of the film – and one that it doesn’t quite live up to – is to turn Jack, a grubby Saddo with no limits, an obligation to lie and a tendency to underestimated risks, into a reasonably likeable main character. He’s not a very good player, it turns out. But Vack almost gets away with it, giving the character a disarmingly hapless stupidity that manifests itself in clumsy bragging rights – “That’s why they call me Blackjack Jack!” – and a gauche need for Scarlett’s approval. Meanwhile, the character of Scarlett dodges the darker aspects of sex work: she has agency, self-respect, and apparently a healthy level of job satisfaction by punishing and humiliating her online slaves. Fox, who worked as a dominatrix herself, is a magnetic screen presence.

But while great one-on-one scenes, like the banter that turns into a brawl between Jack and Larry (Duress) at a gallery opening, and the moment Scarlett realizes her boyfriend’s piece is based on her life, have a growling authenticity, t always flow together to form a coherent whole. The storytelling and the fragile handheld camera, reminiscent of the ups and downs of Jack’s everyday life, have a ragged, hoof-focused quality.

Does the film have anything new to say about virtual connections? Probably not. But even if it’s not the most conventional love story, it still leaves us the possibility that, despite all the lies, stalking, and cheating, there is ultimately an honesty in the relationship between Scarlett and Jack that no one has achieved with any other partner.

Quality in the traditional sense doesn’t necessarily have to be the point when it comes to the new forms of cinema brought about by Covid-19. When the story of the Lockdown era film is written, perhaps a subgenre closer to oral history than standard documentary will get the most attention. What counts is less artistic excellence than openness, empathy and quick reactions – and often courage and ingenuity under limited conditions. Whichever criteria were used, the Dublin-premiered Portmanteau documentary Is There Out Anybody Out There? – with the subtitle ‘Young Voices From Inside a Pandemic’ and created by an international group of around 60 students from Trinity College Dublin – will at least stand as an honorable, adventurous and engaging contribution to this form of crisis cinema.

Energetic and very committed work

The specific backstory of the film is the closing of Trinity College as a lockdown in March 2020, during which students will be asked to vacate their accommodation. Some managed to return to their homeland, all over the world (14 different countries are represented here); some students rejoined their families, others got together with friends, but many spent the lockdown in complete or partial isolation. It’s no surprise to see lots of bedroom interiors here.

We also see many familiar forms of communication, almost every platform you are likely to see on a laptop or phone screen today – Skype, WhatsApp, TikTok and, inevitably, Zoom. Many of these, along with images from television news and various Internet sources, are cleverly put together in the energetic mosaic sequence that begins the film, interrupted by the starting chord of a MacBook. This also introduces a connecting device that runs continuously: close-ups of a young man in his room anxiously scanning despatches from his peers around the world.

Some contributors seem to have it relatively easy in 2020: some sit contentedly in family houses or with pets, or find comfort in groups in the countryside. Others have a harder time: A woman talks about her infection experience, while a young man from Puerto Rico discovers that he is the only one still living in his hallway. Some of the contributors keep in touch, even though they are scattered around the world: a group of Chinese students exchanging messages from their respective locations in Dublin, London, New York, Italy and China.

There are optimistic perspectives, one woman expressing hope that the experience of lockdown could actually be beneficial to the world – “we can change for the better” – while the brother of a student with an autism spectrum disorder , happily admits that for him, homeschooling is “living the dream”. Darker tones are being struck by a report on the state of affairs in San Francisco and by a group of contributors in Peru reflecting on the crisis in their country’s health care system and the dire outlook for those at the bottom of the social ladder.

While Lockdown has forced some professional filmmakers to reinvent their practice and relationship with a very collective art form, the work shown here is only sometimes formal ambition (the exceptions are clever screen-in-screen video mixes and a sequence, which applies fragmented tones to Emmanuel Macron’s virus declaration “We are at war”). But mostly we are presented with a panorama of diary-style dispatches, some of them touching denominational. However, if you want to search the film for evidence of the current thinking and feeling of a generation, you might be disappointed, because the backgrounds and concerns of the participants are so different that they obviously seem to have relatively little culturally or politically in common (It is also surprising that that the other big story of 2020, the Black Lives Matter explosion, is barely an issue).

However, this is energetic and very engaging work, elegantly put together as a whole by editor Andy Wilson – though each of the makers of these essentially self-contained pieces have turned and edited their own sections. Overall, it’s a sobering film, but as one would hope for from a young perspective, not without optimism: Even the young woman who can be seen in front of the camera during the entire conversation, having had a year as gloomy as any other seems, gives an optimistic note at the end and suggests a simple, pragmatic tip to grab a moment of happiness. And when all else fails, as someone points out, there are always rescue dog videos.
