DENVER — San Francisco Giants infielder Tommy La Stella was reinstated Monday from the 10-day injured list and made his season debut at Colorado.

In other moves, the Giants transferred right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (right ankle inflammation) to the 60-day injured list and optioned outfielder Luis González to Triple-A Sacramento. Right-hander Yunior Marte was optioned to Sacramento on Sunday, and the Giants selected the contract of right-hander Mauricio Llovera.

La Stella, in the second year of an $18.75 million, three-year contract, missed time in his first year with the club due to a broken right hand and a hamstring strain. He underwent surgery in October to repair an Achilles’ tendon issue, and the recovery time forced him to miss the first five weeks of the season.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler welcomed La Stella’s return, saying his veteran presence bolsters clubhouse stability and resolve. La Stella’s defensive versatility also gives Kapler additional flexibility in managing the lineup, and his bat adds to the team’s overall fire power.

“Tommy is one of the better plate appearances in baseball right now, simple as that,” Kapler said. “He has great discipline, fouls off pitches, is extremely competitive in the batter’s box. He’s kind of the epitome of what we want our hitters to be, make a lot of contact, drive the baseball, occasionally draw a walk here and there and keep the line moving.”

Kapler also said that DeSclafani had not encountered a setback in his rehab of an ankle injury that has sidelined him since April 22. He said DeSclafani and team doctors and trainers have settled on a rehab program to gradually build back his arm and leg strength so that he’s ready to fill a slot in the rotation when he returns.

“A long, slow ramp for a pitcher is the most protective thing we can do for them,” Kapler said, adding that “getting him back to the big leagues healthy and strong and capable of taking down a full workload is the most important piece of this puzzle.”

in the case of the Colorado Rockies, if they were at the Olympics, they would have had a shorter night.

Olympic baseball, which began Wednesday, has some notable differences from major league baseball

The big guy is the rule of escape that would have saved the Rockies a few innings. The game ends if the team loses at least 10 runs after 7 innings. It shortened the 12-2 win over Philadelphia in Colorado on April 25 and the 12-0 win over San Francisco the next day, May 13, defeating Cincinnati 13-8.

The Olympic Course Rules were introduced by the World Baseball Softball Confederation in all games except the round medal game. A final out also occurred if the team advanced 15 runs after 5 innings.

Olympic baseball is a return to the preanalytical era. Since MLB Statcast is not installed, there are no problems with the spin rate, the exit speed or the starting angle.

“Basically we had nothing,” said American third baseman Todd Frazier after the Americas qualifier. “There was no video. There was no analysis process. This is your bat. Bring your own. “

Here are 10 nuggets to compare and contrast with.

10. The balls are different. The ball is not a Major League Rawlings breed, but a WBSC version with slightly different stitching. On the other hand, the WBSC ran out of baseball at the Americas qualifier in Florida and the organizers switched to minor league balls in the middle of the tournament.

9. Faster in kilometers. The only metric is really a metric: field speeds are listed in Yokohama. Both miles / hour and kilometers / hour stadium scoreboards. To those wondering, the average speed of 99.2 mph led by Jacob DeGrom’s Major League Baseball sounds like it doesn’t get any further at 159.6 km / h.

8. Who is here and who is not. Of course, DeGrom didn’t take part in the Olympics. The Olympics are limited to 40 players who are not on the Major League Baseball roster. Nevertheless, technically qualified players are often blocked by clubs. St. Louis three-time left-handed Matthew Liberatore was scheduled for qualifying for the United States, but the Cardinals refused to send him to Japan. The list has a vintage feel to it. The US team includes Edwin Jackson and David Robertson. The Dominican strike order in the opening round on Wednesday included Jose Bautista, Juan Francisco and Emilio Bonifacio. However, Japan canceled the tournament’s Central League and Pacific League seasons and welcomed Masahiro Tanaka as a pitching staff member. Oh: And the roster is 24 instead of 26.

7. More exiting runners. Even more extreme is the basic rule of placing a runner on second base at the start of each subsequent innings. Runners are placed first and second. MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association hired second base runners in an extra inning last year to get people out of the ballpark faster, but Rob Manfred will be dropped after this season. He said it was likely.

6. Check tick. Similar to Triple-A and Double-A in 2018, a 20-second pitch clock is used as the basis without a runner.

5. Look at the touch. There are also high five restrictions. There is no celebration from the coach while the base is being rolled. “When a batter hits a home run, members of his team are not allowed to touch the batter until he passes home plate,” they say.

4. Access and information. Probably a pitcher? Perhaps. What do you think of the coach before the game? According to WBSC spokesman Richard Baker, he won’t be able to hit the media on game day until the end of the game. Thoughts of game stars? The clubhouse is closed and players have to walk past the media on their way out of the stadium, but not the reporters.

3. Keep things moving. Manager and Coach Hill Trip? There are 3 additional trips in any game without a switch and every 3 additional innings instead of 1 per inning per pitcher with no pitching changes. Managers and trainers with batteries and base runners also have a limit of three stops.

2. There is no home plate collision. It is forbidden to put the barrel in the catcher and try to remove the ball.

1. Notice to HOUSTON ASTROS ALUMNI: “The use of electronic devices during the games is prohibited. Electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, camcorders, transceivers, field staff, shelters, bullpen, etc. Do not use to communicate with clubhouse or booth staff. The only exception to this rule is the use of phones / cell phones for communication between the shelter and the bullpen, but such devices are already in place. Must be approved by the WBSC. “

ST. LOUIS (AP) Nolan Arenado played against his former team, Adam Wainwright threw a three-hit ball into the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Colorado Rockies 2-0 on Sunday.

Yadier Molina hit an RBI double and Ryan Helsley got Josh Fuentes to start into a double-play final, with the bases loaded for his second career saave and the first this season. St. Louis completed a three-game sweep and won a total of nine out of eleven.

Colorado fell to a major league worst 2-14 on the road.

Wainwright (2-3) hit five and went three over 8 1/3 innings, improving to 11-1 against the Rockies.

Arenado homered the second against the German Marquez (1-4), who allowed two runs in six innings – one earned. St. Louis improved to 14-4 since April 23, the highest record in the majors during that period.

YANKEES 3, NATIONALS 2

NEW YORK (AP) – Giancarlo Stanton scored a Brad Hand single in the ninth inning at the end of the game, and New York beat Washington for their second straight win against the Nationals.

Hand (2-1) went to Tyler Wade and pinch-hitter Aaron Judge from ninth, the day after he went his first batter and lost the leads in the ninth and tenth innings in a game the Yankees scored 4 in 11 innings : 3 won.

An out later, Stanton hanged a slider into left field for his 24th RBI that season and only the fifth hit of the game for the Yankees. New York went 7-2 on their longest homestand of the year, improving to 18-16.

Michael King, Wandy Peralta and Aroldis Chapman (2-0) combined for 2 2/3 goalless relief. King had four outs that season that he couldn’t count on in 12 1/3 innings.

METS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

NEW YORK (AP) – Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was pulled after five innings with a tightness on the right on his return from an injury in a similar area, and New York won the fifth in a row.

DeGrom (3-2) was perfect through four innings but worked in the fifth, then called the coach after throwing two warmup pitches before the sixth. He was scheduled for an MRI.

The right-handed player came back from a 10-day break and skipped his previous turn in the rotation because of a problem with his right lat. Prior to Sunday, deGrom had a .51 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 35 overwhelming innings.

Edwin Diaz got five outs for his fifth save.

Arizona has lost six in a row. Rookie right-handed Riley Smith (1-2) allowed two runs in four innings.

ENGEL 2, DODGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Jared Walsh double with two runs in the third inning and the Los Angeles Angels held off the breaking Dodgers.

After the Dodgers scored the first hit on Chris Taylor’s two-time RBI single in the third period, the Angels reacted in the home half when Walsh looked like a ground rule double against Trevor Bauer (3-2) filled with bases.

The Dodgers were held on three hits but had plenty of baserunners after pulling nine walks from six Angels pitchers. The World Series defending champions left 12 on the base and were 1 to 11 with runners in the points position.

The Dodgers put the runners first and second in ninth place, but Raisel Iglesias retired Justin Turner and Will Smith for his fifth save.

Aaron Slegers (2-0) worked 1 1/3 hitless innings in relief and the Angels won two out of three in the Freeway Series.

The Dodgers have lost five series in a row and split one after winning two out of three from San Diego April 16-18. They started the season 13-3 but are only found 18:17 after losing 14 of 19.

RED SOX 4, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) – Rafael Devers and Hunter Renfroe homered, Nick Pivetta won his third start in a row and Boston improved to 6-0 at Camden Yards this season.

The Red Sox have won five out of six and have the best record in the majors with 22-13. During last year’s season shortened by the pandemic, they were 24-36.

Pivetta (5-0) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings and is now 7-0 since trading from Philadelphia to Boston last August. Matt Barnes fought his eighth save in as many tries with a perfect ninth.

Dean Kremer (0-3) gave up three runs in over five innings for Baltimore and has not won in nine starts since defeating the Yankees in his Major League debut on September 6.

RAYS 4, athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Willy Adames hit a three-run homer in run five, Mike Brosseau added a tie-break drive in the following inning, and Tampa Bay held Oakland to avoid a series sweep.

The A’s missed a chance in game eight when Matt Olson hesitated on a pass from Andrew Kittredge and was thrown out in third by catcher Mike Zunino.

Jeffrey Springs (3-1) hit two in fifth and took the win. Kittredge got five outs on his second save.

Athletics left player Cole Irvin (3: 4) could not hold a 3-0 lead. He allowed four runs – three earned – in six innings.

BREWERS 6, CUBS 5

CHICAGO (AP) – Tyler Anderson put in eight solid innings and Pittsburgh held out in the ninth to end Chicago’s five-game winning streak.

Wilmer Difo had three hits and drove in three runs when the Pirates won for the third time in their last 20 games at Wrigley Field.

After two runs and four hits from Anderson (3-3), the Cubs scored three times in ninth place. Richard Rodriguez knocked out pinch hitter Javier Baez with a grounder to finish him with a runner in second place for his sixth save.

Kyle Hendricks (2-4) allowed six runs – four earned – and nine hits in five innings.

PADRES 11, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Jake Cronenworth hit a splash shot, Fernando Tatis Jr. also met Johnny Cueto and San Diego pissed off San Francisco.

Padres starter Chris Paddack played three innings and took a 5-0 lead. Ryan Weathers (2-1) followed with three more shutout innings.

Cueto (2-1) hadn’t played since April 14 when he was training his left lat.

BREWERS 2, MARLINS 1, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) – Tyrone Taylor scored a two-out tiebreak single and seven Milwaukee pitchers combined on a six-hitter in the 10th inning.

Anthony Bass (1-3) of Miami retired the top two thugs in 10th, but after a deliberate stroll, Taylor’s hit brought automatic runner Pablo Reyes home from second place.

Josh Hader (3-0) achieved a perfect ninth place with two strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.71. Drew Rasmussen worked 10th and earned his first career savings.

ASTROS 7, BLUE JAYS 4

HOUSTON (AP) – Kyle Tucker hit a triple homer and reached a career high with four RBIs when Houston built a big lead over Toronto early on.

Jose Altuve added a solo homer for the Astros to help them win two out of three in the series. Tucker’s Homer highlighted a fourth four-run inning that extended the lead to 7-0.

Bryan Abreu (2-1) won for Zack Greinke. Ryan Pressly hit second in ninth place for his sixth save.

Blue Jay’s rookie Nate Pearson (0-1) was finished off with a career high of five walks on his first start this season and the fifth of his career. Pearson, the organization’s best vantage point, gave up three runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Rowdy Tellez homered and Bo Bichette had a double run for Toronto.

RANGERS 10, MARINERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Adolis Garcia hit his team-leading ninth homer and drove at the highest level in five runs, Dane Dunning (2-2) beat 10 in five innings and Texas beat Seattle.

The last seven wins for the Rangers came after falling behind, this time as they answered Seattle’s fifth out of two runs with a 2-1 lead with six runs at the end of the inning.

Nick Solak had a two-run tiebreak double when the first six Texan hitters hit the base, including Jose Trevino on shortstop JP Crawford’s first mistake in 27 games and the third of the day for the Mariners.

Leadoff man Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits and three runs when Texas won their third straight run, improving to 7-2 since May 1, returning to .500 for the first time since April 9.

Jupiter Sheffield (2-3) allowed seven runs – five earned ones – in five innings.

WHITE SOX 9, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) – Yermin Mercedes and Jose Abreu each had three RBIs to help Chicago end a three-game sweep and give Kansas City its eighth straight loss.

The Royals remained at their home stand with seven games without a win. They opened 1+ games in AL Central, but 3+ games are beyond their friendly limits. They were swept by the Indians earlier this week.

The White Sox have beaten the Royals 10 times in a row on the streets.

Lucas Giolito (2-3) gave up one run and four hits in five innings. It was the first run allowed by a Chicago starter in five games as they have an ERA of 0.31 in the last 29 1/3 innings.

The Royals’ three runs were the most that the White Sox had given up in a week.

Mike Minor (2-2) gave up five earned runs in five innings.

BRAVES 6, PHILLIES 1

ATLANTA (AP) – Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson homered, Huascar Ynoa won his fourth straight start and Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Freeman, the reigning NL MVP who started Game 1 for 24 in May, hit his ninth homer, a solo shot, to make it 5-1 in the third game as the Braves played their second straight game and fifth in the last six won. Freeman finished 3 for 3, hitting the base four times, increasing his batting average by 20 points to 0.217.

Aaron Nola (3-2) took the loss after allowing four runs and five hits in four innings.

Ynoa (4-1) gave up one run and four hits with six strikeouts in six innings. In his last four starts, the 22-year-old right-handed has an ERA of 1.11.

Randy Newman’s 1983 song “I Love LA” booms from the speakers at Dodger Stadium after every win in Los Angeles.

The Rockies need to hear this song in their dreams. Or nightmares.

The Dodgers beat them again Wednesday night, winning 4-2, sending the Rockies to their fifth straight loss. As of September 9, 2018, the Rockies have lost 32 out of 40 games against Los Angeles, including 18 out of 21 in Chavez Ravine.

“Obviously we’re not playing the baseball we want to play right now,” said all-star shortstop Trevor Story of his 3-9 team. “Guys feel that. But every day we show up we feel like we’re going to win. We are convinced of that.

“Of course this road trip wasn’t that great and we just need to get the process going a little better and execute it better.”

In the third inning the frustration boiled over.

Rockies manager Bud Black blew up home plate referee Phil Cuzzi and was kicked out for the 32nd time in his career, the seventh time with the Rockies. Black was rightly upset by Cuzzi’s attack on Garret Hampson. Starter Dustin May’s pitch was well below the strike zone. Black also thought that Rockies starter Jon Gray was “crushed” by Cuzzi in the first inning.

“I think we’re at one of those points where we don’t get calls and we don’t take advantage of some situations where we can score,” said bank coach Mike Redmond, who took over for Black. “Buddy did what managers do and sometimes you have to get kicked out to make a point.”

The only good news for the Rockies was that they finally made home plate.

Colorado hadn’t scored a run in 26 innings as it stretched back to the top of the fifth inning in San Francisco on Saturday. The losing streak finally ended in the fifth inning. It was by no means the required downpour, but the two runs reduced LA’s lead to 3-2.

Gray gave the Rockies a professional start – an emphasis on work. It took 89 pitches to get through his four innings, including 36 pitches in the first two-run LA inning. Still, Gray kept the Rockies in the game and went 3-0 back with his team.

“I think I made the right adjustment,” said Gray. “I was just too late in the first (inning) and I think that kept me from going five or six.”

A look at what’s happening at the majors today:

___

NOT FINISHED YET

Albert Pujols wants to join a new team and be an everyday player.

The 41-year-old superstar was fired by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, abruptly ending a decade-long stint at his second major league club. He was appointed to a nightly meeting with General Manager Perry Minasian and team president John Carpino the day after Pujols was unhappy with irregular playing times.

Pujols, who has beaten 0.198 this season, is determined to play for another team on a regular basis after clearing waivers, Angels manager Joe Maddon said. Pujols is fifth in Major League history with 667 career homers and 13th with 3,253 goals.

“He wants to play and he wants to be on the field,” said Maddon. “Hopefully he’ll get this opportunity elsewhere, and believe me, we’ll all promote him.”

The three-time NL MVP for St. Louis was last season of a 10-year $ 240 million deal with Los Angeles.

If another team picks up Pujols after clearing the waivers, the Angels still owe them the remainder of their $ 30 million, minus a pro-rated portion of the Major League’s likely minimum wage.

“Albert is not a banker,” said Minasian, the Angels’ first year GM. “Sitting on the bench wouldn’t do him any good and it wouldn’t do the team any good. He is more motivated than ever before. If the situation were different and he could have played rackets here, it would be different. “

REMEMBER ME?

It seems almost poetic: the St. Louis thug Nolan Arenado will compete for the first time against his former team and against the pitcher who was involved in the trade for him.

Arenado has one hit in three at-bats against left Austin Gomber, which was dealt along with four minor leaguers to the Colorado Rockies on February 1 for the eight-time Gold Glove winner. The Rockies also agreed to pay St. Louis approximately $ 51 million of the $ 199 million that remains under Arenado’s contract at the time.

It’s a deal that many Rockies fans still see red in the three-game series in St. Louis.

Gone is Jeff Bridich, the general manager Arenado argued with over the direction of the team. Bridich resigned last month from a squad that is currently in last place in the NL standings.

Arenado was a Rockies second-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft. He has grown to be a five-time all-star third baseman and one of the most adept outfield players in the game.

Arenado beats .276 with five home runs and 22 RBIs this season.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN ‘

A couple of fascinating matchups in the west begin as Mookie Betts and Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Champion visit Mike Trout and the Angels in the Freeway Series while the San Francisco Giants host San Diego with first place in NL West.

Julio Urías (4-0, 2.87 ERA) plays for the fighting Dodgers, who have lost three in a row and eight out of 10, against Griffin Canning (2-2, 6.20). Blake Snell (1-0, 3.51) is on the mound for the Padres against Anthony DeSclafani (2-1, 2.00).

BANGED-UP BLUE JAYS

Toronto outfielder George Springer is not expected to be ready to get back on the line-up when his last appearance on the 10-day injury list ends on May 13th.

The 2017 World Series MVP with Houston, signed to a $ 150 million team record and a six-year contract in the off-season, didn’t make his Toronto debut until April 28 with two different injuries, first a tight oblique muscle and later a quadriceps problem.

Springer landed on the injured list again after worsening his tense right cuboid.

“I would expect it would take more than just the IL stint,” said General Manager Ross Atkins.

Blue Jay’s reliever David Phelps was placed on the IL for a right lat stretch. Infielder Joe Panik had an MRI after experiencing calf pain, and catcher Alejandro Kirk is expected to be absent for at least four weeks due to left flexor strain.
