The slow-moving storm is continuing across the region, with steadier drizzle seen along the coast and in our hills and mountains. The wet weather is expected to continue through the evening, with overnight light rain and higher elevation drizzle becoming less widespread.

By the beginning of Friday’s morning commute, lingering moisture remains mainly in the form of patchy dense fog, especially across North Bay neighborhoods. A few areas of drizzle are still possible, though streets should begin to dry as our morning rush unfolds.

The San Francisco Bay Area was soaked in sunshine on Friday afternoon, but forecasters say much-needed rain is on the way Saturday.

A weak weather system is expected to arrive tomorrow morning and deliver light, widespread rain into the afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

“The moisture tap with this system is greater and limiting rainfall potential,” the weather service said in its forecast.

A tenth to a quarter of an inch is forecast for areas across the Bay Area, Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the weather service said.

“There is always the possibility that some locations will see less than a tenth of an inch, especially in the three inland valley locations, and some spots could see a little more than a quarter of an inch,” Gass said. “It’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get.”

Cold air aloft in the atmosphere on Saturday could cause short spurts of moderate rainfall and even hail, and there’s a 10% chance of thunderstorms, the weather service said.

“The system does have a little bit of oomph to it,” Gass said. “There’s some instability that could cause an isolated thunderstorm, but the possibility remains very low.”

Showers will subside quickly by Saturday evening and dry conditions are expected overnight, but “there will be a nip in the air,” the weather service said. Widespread 40s are forecast overnight with some inland locations even getting into the 30s.

Temperatures are expected to rebound on Sunday and Monday marks the start of an early season heat wave with high pressure building over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The weather service is forecasting temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s for inland valleys and mid-60s for coastal areas on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday will likely be the hottest days of the week, with more locations breaking into the 80s.

“Either of those days could be the peak of the warming for this event,” Gass said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — United Playaz will host its annual gun buyback event in San Francisco this Saturday.

The event will run from 8 am to noon at 1038 Howard St.

Representatives from the mayor’s office, the San Francisco Police Department and community organizations will safely accept guns from people who no longer need them, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

People turning in guns will be offered $100 cash for handguns, rifles and shotguns, as well as $200 cash for automatic weapons.

United Playaz is a San Francisco-based violence prevention and youth development organization, according to its website.

Aaron Rodgers understands his hopes for a second Super Bowl title with the Green Bay Packers are running out of time.

The 38-year-old quarterback’s final postseason run begins Saturday night as he attempts to beat the team that has served as the three-time MVP’s greatest nemesis in the playoffs.

Rodgers has a 0-3 playoff record against the San Francisco 49ers, despite beating them in the regular season for the past two years. The top-ranked Packers (13-4) and 49ers (11-7) face off again Saturday night in an NFC division playoff game at Lambeau Field.

“I think mortality in football is something we all think about,” Rodgers said. “And we all think about how many opportunities are presented to us to move forward, and each one is special.”

Since stumbling to a 3-5 start, the 49ers have won eight of 10 while showing a knack for delivering away. They secured a playoff spot by recovering from a 17-0 deficit to win an away game in overtime with the Los Angeles Rams and followed that up with a 23-17 wildcard win in Dallas.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo says San Francisco’s slow start prompted the 49ers to adopt a playoff mentality prematurely.

“When you put that pressure on your team early on, it creates a mindset,” Garoppolo said. “It creates an atmosphere of urgency in the dressing room that we need to win now and make some plays.”

The Packers defeated the 49ers 30-28 on the road on September 26, with the 49ers erasing a 17-0 deficit and taking the lead in the last minute before Rodgers Green Bay for Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal positioned time up. The Packers also beat the 49ers away from home last season, 34-17.

But the 49ers can draw on their successful postseason history against Rodgers’ Packers, including a 37-20 win in the NFC Championship game two seasons ago.

“This is a special opportunity,” Rodgers said. “We’re not going to make it bigger than it is. We’ve come to the point where we’re level headed and balanced and haven’t triggered a roller coaster of emotions, and we will continue to do the same. So if it was good enough to get us this far, it’s good enough to get us past this point.”

DYNAMIC DEEBO

Deebo Samuel has added another role to his all-round squad.

The dynamic receiver and runner showed off his forecasting skills last week. After San Francisco intercepted a pass, Samuel challenged coach Kyle Shanahan to get him the ball and he would score. Shanahan called a handoff on the next play, and Samuel took it 26 yards for a TD.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve never been anywhere near a football player who’s done his own thing,” said Mike McDaniel, 49ers offensive coordinator. “I go to basketball, but when you play with 22 people on the field, 11 of them try to attack you with all their might. And you’re just like, ‘Hey, yeah, give me the ball, I’ll put the ball in the box’, and for him that was a special moment that only a special player could achieve.”

Samuel has 1,880 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns this season, including the playoffs.

STAY DISCIPLINE

Green Bay’s most obvious concern is slowing down a 49ers rushing attack. Elijah Mitchell and Samuel ran 168 yards together against the Cowboys.

The Packers say they also need to pay attention to what linebacker De’Vondre Campbell described as “eye candy.” Campbell was referring to various shifts and pre-snap moves that Shanahan uses to trick defenders into looking the wrong way.

“The way he designs his plays, the moves, and all the different kinds of shifts and all that kind of stuff, it’s something that draws everyone’s attention,” said Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark. “So if your eyes are in the wrong place, if you’re not doing your job or doing what you’re trained to do, he can take advantage of that.”

VIOLATION UPDATES

Packer’s offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) and cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) are questionable and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back) is iffy. The Packers are awaiting wide receiver Randall Cobb (core) and offensive tackle Billy Turner (knee) after injuries knocked them out for the latter part of the regular season.

49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (concussion), cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) and defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) are questionable. Bosa was deleted from the concussion log.

DEFEND DAVANTE

Green Bay’s Davante Adams caught 12 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ regular-season win over the 49ers.

San Francisco is stronger in the secondary now than it was in September thanks to Thomas’ late-season appearance, but defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans knows slowing Adams will be a tall order.

“They make it difficult because they move Davante great,” Ryans said. “He doesn’t stay in one place. He can move into the slot. He can play outside. He is everywhere.”

The forecast for Saturday in Green Bay calls for a high of 19 degrees with a low of 7, although no snow is expected.

A celebration of the life of the fourth San Francisco Poet Laureate will wind its way through North Beach on Saturday, meeting several of his favorite spots.

Jack Hirschman died on August 22, 2021 at the age of 87 after a life of poetry, art and social engagement. In 1973 he moved to San Francisco and was a permanent presence in the North Beach neighborhood, where he supported artists and poets from the city and around the world. He was named a San Francisco Poet Laureate in 2006, although he supported Gavin Newsom’s opponent in the mayoral campaign in 2003. In 2007 he founded the International Poetry Festival and in 2009 became Poet in Residence at the San Francisco Public Library.

He died in his home just minutes before he was due to speak to an online meeting for the World Poetry Movement, an organization he helped found. To honor his memory, a procession through North Beach will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2021, starting at 12 noon in the Specs’ Bar (12 Adler Place / William Saroyan Place), where a communal altar will be built and with live Music is blessed. Attendees can then take a second line procession to Caffe Trieste (601 Vallejo St.) for music and poetry readings before walking up Grant Avenue to Live Worms Gallery (1345 Grant Ave.) to honor Hirschman. The event will be relocated to Washington Square Park (Columbus Avenue and Filbert Streets) for a formal program and memorial service, which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and run through 4:00 p.m.

Friends and admirers of Hirschman are invited to bring items for the community altar. Masks and proof of COVID-19 vaccination are required for indoor specs, and most events are held outdoors for public health reasons.

The event is sponsored by the office of District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin. According to their press release, Hirshman’s main work The Arcanes comprises three volumes with 126 poems from 34 years. The World Poetry Movement supports a month-long call for “poetic actions” in October to commemorate Hirschman.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Smoke from forest fires in southern and central California has caused the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) to issue an air quality recommendation for Friday and Saturday.

The smoky and hazy skies are not expected to exceed federal health standards, and there was no Spare the Air Alert in effect, the district said. The Air District will closely monitor air quality across the region for smoke effects from forest fires.

The BAAQMD said if smoke odor is present, exposure should be avoided and if possible, stay indoors with the windows and doors closed until the smoke level subsides, if temperatures allow.

The district also recommended that those affected by smoke turn their air conditioning and car ventilation systems on to recirculation to prevent outside air from getting inside.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 conference set the schedule for their final football weekend.

The conference announced on Sunday that its teams will play six games, including Washington ranked 16th in Southern California in Friday’s Pac-12 championship game.

Oregon will face number 21 Colorado on Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in Southern California. The winner of this game could slip into a postponed title game if the Trojans or Huskies are unable to play due to COVID-19 issues.

Saturday’s games also include Washington State in Utah, Stanford at UCLA and Arizona State in Oregon State. Arizona will meet California at a time and place to be determined. The Wildcats sacked coach Kevin Sumlin on Saturday after losing to the state of Arizona.

The Pac-12 left the schedule open for the last weekend of the season to have flexibility in a year when the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in cancellations and postponements across the country.

USC secured a spot in the Pac-12 title game for the first time since 2017 by beating rivals UCLA 43-38 on Saturday.

Washington won its third Pac-12 North title in five years with a 38-21 win over Colorado.

The conference went to a home-hosted model for that season’s championship game.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued another air quality recommendation for the region due to forest fire smoke for Saturday.

It is the fourth day in a row that the BAAQMD has placed the Bay Area under an air quality recommendation. The region has also been under a Spare the Air Alert since Thursday – which prohibits burning wood or other solid fuels both indoors and outdoors. The Spare the Air Alert expires after Friday.

According to a press release issued by BAAQMD, smoke from wildfires in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, which moved offshore since the middle of the week, will continue to affect the Bay Area on Saturday.

“We look at the unhealthy air quality down on the ground. We assume that in the orange category it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, ”BAAQMD spokesman Aaron Richardson told KPIX 5.

The smoky air was inevitable for anyone outside in the Bay Area on Friday.

“You have this heavy feeling in your chest and it’s not an allergy,” said Kim Vostermans, who went on a bike ride with her friend Kelly Hodge in Campbell.

“It’s hard to exercise, it’s hard to walk, walk the dog, ride a bike. It’s hard to eat outside in this heat with the doors and windows open. It’s a shame, but again, we’re not the ones trying to fight the fires, ”Hodge told KPIX 5.

Rod Pomales rode his bike hard up Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose, the bad air in his eyes. “I can smell it a little. I don’t feel it, ”said Pomales.

The organizers of Campbell’s Boogie Music Festival – which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – are now hoping the air quality won’t keep people away this weekend.

“I hope the wind picks up a little tonight and turns a little,” said Ken Johnson of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

Masks are optional at the festival but are now preferred for several reasons, including smoke.

“It will possibly give people a bigger reason to put their masks on when they didn’t want to. So the hope is to have fun and be safe, ”said Johnson.

The fires in Northern California burned more than 1 million acres, or 2,000 square miles, during this devastating fire season. The Dixie Fire – which is spread across five counties – burned over 700,000 acres alone.

The McFarlane fire in Counties Shasta, Trinity and Tehama burned nearly 116,000 acres, while the Caldor Fire in Sierra Nevada grew again overnight and has now consumed over 73,000 acres, firefighters said Friday.

The persistent smoke hovering over the area will cause foggy, smoky skies with a noticeable odor in the air in some areas, despite officials saying pollution levels were not expected to exceed federal health standards. The air quality in the air quality index is expected to be in the good to low medium range, so there is no Spare the Air Alert for Saturday.

The Air District will continue to monitor air quality across the region for smoke effects from ongoing forest fires.

If the smell of smoke is noticeable, Bay Area residents are advised to protect their health by avoiding exposure. All residents – especially those with breathing problems – are advised to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed until the smoke subsides, if temperatures allow. The BAAQMD also recommends that those affected by smoke turn their air conditioning and car ventilation systems on to recirculation to prevent outside air from getting inside.

Residents can track changes in air quality at baaqmd.gov/highs or on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov.
