The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday that the man who was shot and killed by police at the San Francisco International Airport on Jan. 20 was 37-year-old Nelson Waynezhi Szeto.

Szeto, whose city of residence is unknown, died after a confrontation with police near the BART station entrance at the airport’s International Terminal. Initial reports from officials said Szeto was armed with two handguns, but an investigation by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office later revealed that he had two airsoft guns.

The situation started with multiple reports made about a suspicious individual in the International Terminal, officials said.

The San Francisco Police Department responded at 7:26 am and established that the suspect “appeared to be armed with a handgun,” the police department said in a statement.

Officers reportedly tried to calm down Szeto using nonlethal measures, but he continued “to advance,” and officers fired multiple shots “to neutralize the threat,” airport spokesperson Doug Yakel said in an email statement Jan. 20.

A medical team administered CPR, but Szeto died from his injuries, officials said.

A bystander in the area was also injured in the gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Yakel said.

The California Department of Justice announced that same day that it’s investigating the shooting. Under Assembly Bill 1506, which was passed in 2020, a state prosecutor is required to “investigate incidents of an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.”

Under the bill, Szeto is considered an “unarmed civilian” as he wasn’t in possession of a deadly weapon. Airsoft guns are considered “replica guns” and “are not considered deadly weapons unless they are used in some particular manner likely to produce death or great bodily injury (eg, as a bludgeon).”

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Wednesday night the young Alameda County Sheriff’s recruit who was killed last month in Oakland was remembered in San Francisco, where he lived and went to college.

A big turnout of family and friends – with special recognition for David Nguyen.

San Francisco Sheriff’s Deputies saluting pictures of David Nguyen, a 28-year-old Alameda County Sheriff’s recruit who was killed on Interstate 580 in Oakland as he drove home to San Francisco after a day of training.

“Just seeing the community get together for a cause, for my brother, that keeps me going,” said David’s sister Barbara. She was there to speak along with a number of others, including the San Francisco Sheriff, to honor Nguyen Wednesday night where he was so close to graduating at City College of San Francisco.

RELATED: Slain Alameda Co. Sheriff recruit honored, casket transported to Colma funeral home

Alan Wong is a trustee at City College of San Francisco who served alongside Nguyen in the National Guard.

“With the support of David’s teachers, I’m moving forward with a proposal to have City College confer him an honorary degree in liberal arts and sciences to help him and his family complete his academic degree at City College,” said Wong.
Nguyen was just one unit away from a degree. His girlfriend Shanice Vaughn read a journal of his where he vowed to do better in school.

RELATED: ‘We were like best friends’: Sister of slain Alameda Co. Sheriff recruit shares memories of his life

“My solution is to enter City College with a completely different mindset. The mindset to learn, progress, and most of all not cheat myself out of an education again,” said Vaughn.

David’s family and friends are still struggling with his loss but were happy to share David’s memories on cold city evening, with his mother, who has been hit particularly hard.

Barbara says she will remember the good times.

VIDEO: Alameda Co. Sheriff’s recruit fatally shot while driving home from work on I-580 in Oakland

“He took care of me at a very young age and he would force me to do everything with him either working out, Boy Scouts, all these things. I didn’t really appreciate it when I was younger but when I look back on it now, man he was a great big brother,” says Nguyen.

Deputies tell us there is still a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of David’s killer. As of right now, no arrests have been made.

(Our The Bay Area Snapshot series contains more than a handful of profiles of such images.) But on occasion, one of them tends to stick out above the proverbial fray. It sits differently on our eyes; it lands in our souls with perfect form. These specific stills remind us — in the flicker of a scrolling LED screen — just how fortunate we are to call the Bay Area home.

A recent snap of this grade, which was taken 5,000-feet above the Golden Gate Bridge and about three miles offshore, made rounds on Twitter and Instagram for its awe-inspiring nature.

“It’s amazing the response and amount of kind words I’ve gotten about this photo,” Oren Rubinstein, the photographer behind the still, told The Bold Italic in an email. “It reminds me of just how much a picture can mean to so many people — and take you completely by surprise.”

A Bay Area local for over thirty years, Rubinstein says that he’s been shooting pictures on an almost daily basis for many years now. His subjects? The region’s cornucopia of natural wonders and urban fixations.

“I’m intrigued by the natural beauty of the Bay Area, and how the urban/suburban landscape integrates within the canvas of the land, ocean, and bay waters,” he says. “Having lived on the coast-side for the past 20-years, the natural focus for me has been looking west towards the sea and northwest to the Gulf of the Farallones.”

With regards to this specific shot, Rubinstein (as well as TBI) like that the picture completely ignores downtown and SoMa, trading towering metropolitan sprawl for San Francisco’s more leveled, greener neighborhoods, like the Sunset District. There’s an uncanny feeling of unchanged-ness in this image — Golden Gate Park sitting largely as it has been for over 150 years; the Golden Gate Bridge still wearing its iconic red hues coming up for now 90 years — even though so much has shifted in SF.

“The ‘small towns’ of the Richmond and Sunset districts, feel connected and ‘bridged’ to that golden beauty of the Bay and beyond by the Golden Gate Bridge,” he adds in closing, before waxing on a bit more gratitude for how widely admired the picture has been.

When asked if we would like to have a more high-resolution photo of the image to use, Rubinstein noted that he actually preferred the more “paint-like” quality of the original photo. We’d have to agree with him, as we imagine other fans of the still—who’ve collectively liked and shared this photograph tens of thousands of times on Twitter, alone—do, too.

A 24-year-old Iowa City man was arrested and charged with multiple shootings of his landlord.

According to a criminal complaint, the landlord of a property on the 400 block of East Fairchild Street in Iowa City arrived at the residence around 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning, December 21, to work on a plumbing problem. The landlord had already taken care of the work at this point.

After doing some work on the main level of the building, the landlord went upstairs and knocked on a bedroom door for access to additional plumbing. Shots rang out as he knocked on the bedroom door. Authorities say Carter Wolf, who was in another bedroom in the home, shot through the door of the bedroom he was in, towards the door.

The criminal complaint states that Carter “shot the victim through his bedroom door at least 6 or 7 times… The suspect admits he never saw the victim because his bedroom door was closed.” The suspect admits shooting through his closed door in the victim’s direction.”

The landlord was beaten multiple times and required immediate surgery and was hospitalized after the incident. The name of the landlord and the current condition were not disclosed.

Wolf was checked into the Johnson County Jail in Iowa City on Monday evening, January 3. He was charged with reckless use of a lighter resulting in grievous injury, a Class C felony. Wolf remains in the Johnson County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.

A recruit from the California Sheriff’s Department who was killed Tuesday in a freeway shootout in Oakland has been identified, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

David Nguyen, 28, was off duty when he was shot dead while driving home from the academy, authorities said. He was supposed to graduate in February.

Investigators have not yet determined if Nguyen was the target of the shooting.

“I don’t understand why anyone would choose to use their gun, probably for nothing,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Sheriff said. JD Nelson told FOX 2 about the Bay Area. He called Nguyen “popular” and “highly motivated”.

Nguyen’s family and girlfriend were “dismayed” by his killing, FOX 2 reported.

After Nguyen was shot near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll booth, his vehicle crashed into a guardrail. According to FOX 2, he was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – An Oakland man was shot dead in a cul-de-sac on Lakeshore Avenue on Lake Merritt on Christmas Eve, where a woman was previously fatally shot and seven other people injured, authorities said.

All of these gun violence incidents have occurred since May, East Bay Times investigators said. They did not disclose whether the shootings were related.

Oakland’s Devani Aleman Sanchez was shot dead in a cul-de-sac around 12:50 p.m. on November 16. She was taken to a hospital where she died a few days later.

According to police, she was standing in front of a vehicle when at least one person approached her and tried to rob her at gunpoint.

In the most recent incident, officials reacted to reports of gunfire around 8:19 p.m. on Friday. When they arrived, the officers found a man in the middle of the street.

Firefighters and an ambulance tried to save the man, but he died in the hospital. His name was withheld until the next of kin were notified.

It was the 134th murder in the city – the highest number in Oakland since 148 in 2006. Last year, Oakland Police investigated 109 murders in the city.

Michael Ziolkowski lives in the facility and has heard four opposing shots. From his apartment he saw the victim lying in the middle of the street. He said it appeared the man had been shot in the back.

“Several people around him are trying to help him and whatever and tell him to lie down. He kept trying to get up, ”said Ziolkowski.

The incident kicked off a heavy Christmas weekend in Oakland. Police said there were multiple shootings, robberies and car thefts.

People who live in the Lake Merritt area said they no longer feel safe there.

“It’s been getting more dangerous the last six months I’ve lived here,” said Maya Hendricks area residence.

Hendricks no longer feels safe at Lake Merritt. She stays at home after dark.

“It is not customary to leave [my home] after 7 or 8 pm I try to get in just before the sun goes down, ”said Hendricks, who was walking her dog.

“It’s scary. I don’t know why the increase. I think there has been a lot of activity here since the pandemic,” said Tsiolkovsky.

The 1400 block on Lakeshore Avenue is a popular spot where people just park, hang around in their cars, and admire the views of Lake Merritt. Most people just assume it’s a safe place until they find out about all of the shootings.

“It’s a little intimidating and nerve wracking. It’s a little scary, ”said Matthew Ball, who was walking his dog by the lake.

As for Hendricks, she said the beauty and vibrancy surrounding the lake is no longer worth the risk.

“I’m actually moving out. So I don’t have much to say other than that I can’t stay here much longer, ”said Hendricks. “For me personally it is getting more and more uncomfortable [to live here]. “

SONOMA COUNTY (CBS SF) – Sonoma County’s health authorities are expanding the requirement to receive this year’s flu shot to include all geriatric and home care workers.

According to the health officer Dr. Sundari Mase’s ordinance, the revised requirement applies to employees in adult and elderly care facilities, home and home nurses, hospice workers, and employees in regional centers serving people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Employees in the above sectors must receive the flu vaccine by November 30th. Officials said workers given medical exemption or religious precautions from the flu vaccination must wear a surgical mask or respirator when working indoors.

Last month, the county made compulsory flu vaccinations for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care workers, with a deadline of November 15.

CONTINUE READING: California grocers and restaurateurs are calling for the new bacon law to be delayed

Mase expanded the contract due to concerns about a possible surge in influenza and COVID-19 patients in hospitals this winter.

“Now that we have a vaccine against COVID-19, we know that many people plan holiday meetings with other people who have been vaccinated. But the COVID vaccine won’t reduce your chances of getting the flu or spreading it to others, ”Mase said. “If we all get a flu shot, it will help keep people away from the hospital and free up our doctors and nurses to care for the sick in our community.”

Officials said the flu vaccine is widely used by health care providers, clinics, pharmacies and some COVID-19 vaccination centers. Both the flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine can be safely received on the same date.

San Francisco will pay $ 2.5 million to the mother of a man who was shot dead by a San Francisco police officer in 2017.

The payment, pending board approval, would settle a federal civil lawsuit that Judy O’Neil filed in December 2017, about two weeks after the death of her son, Keita O’Neil.

Police officer Christopher Samayoa had just graduated from police academy and started field training when he shot and killed O’Neil on December 1, 2017. O’Neil allegedly pushed a state lottery worker and stole the keys to her white minivan. Police accused him of stealing the van and leading her on a chase on Highway 101 that ended at a public housing complex on Bayview.

O’Neil opened the door to his van and jumped out of the moving vehicle as the police followed him. Samayoa, in the passenger seat of a patrol car driven by Edric Talusan, a training supervisor, pulled out his service pistol and fired through the window as O’Neil sped by. Footage of samayoa’s body-worn camera and surveillance video nearby revealed that O’Neil was unarmed and only yards away at the time of the shooting. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Three years later, in November 2020, Samayoa was charged with manslaughter, along with three other criminal charges: assault with a gun, reckless firing of a gun, and unlawful attack by a police officer. It was the first time in recent history that the city’s chief prosecutor has charged a police officer with murder in a case of use of force, and the third time in the region.

Since then, Boudin has charged five other officers who he believed used excessive force, including another for murder, which the prosecutor announced earlier this week. He has five criminal cases pending against police officers, including the one against Samayoa.

“This is one of the more ruthless shootings I’ve ever seen, mainly because the person was unarmed, the officer was in a safe position, and O’Neil ran past,” said John Burris, the O’Civic attorney. Neil’s family. “According to the principles of ‘reasonable’ and ‘necessary’ he was wrong in both cases.”

Julia Fox, an attorney who represents Samayoa in criminal proceedings, said her client “has full confidence in the legal process and he trusts a jury of his colleagues should this become relevant”.

“We are confident that Officer Samayoa’s actions at the end of his case, after a thorough review of all the circumstances presented, were reasonable,” said Fox.

Burris added that O’Neil’s mother, Judy, was traumatized and that the court had hired her younger sister to look after her. He called the case heartbreaking.

You can’t come to a vaccination center? San Francisco will bring the COVID-19 vaccine into residents’ homes, workplaces and private events through a new program called “Vax to You,” health officials said this week.

The mobile vaccine unit has been operational since February, delivering 6,000 doses to people in vulnerable populations who may have difficulty getting to locations, such as senior citizens in care facilities and the homeless. Now anyone in groups of five to twelve, anywhere, can get Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, or Pfizer vaccines for free and by appointment.

The program comes as the city pushes to increase vaccination rates as the number of COVID-19 cases rises, Mayor London Breed told. 84 percent of San Franciscans have at least their first dose, but there is still a void to fill in black and Latino communities – only 64 percent of the black population and 74 percent of Latinos received their first shot.

“We have to make sure these communities get the vaccine because what we are seeing now, with nearly 100 people in the hospital, most of those people are African American and Latino,” Breed said at a press conference at the Sheba Piano Lounge.

Breed said we are in the “ninth inning” of the pandemic, and the recent surge in the Delta variant means we will have to limit ourselves to vaccinations and wearing masks for a little longer.

“Just because we’re sick of COVID-19, just because we’re sick of all the rules and regulations and being told what to do, just because we’re sick of it doesn’t mean we’re sick of it,” Breed said. “It’s not gone because we want it to be gone. So that means that we have to do more. “

Although there have been cases of vaccinated populations lately, the city’s health director Dr. Grant Colfax that this is not a good time to be unvaccinated. Getting the vaccine could be life or death, he said.

“It can make all the difference whether you spend a few days at home in bed or a few weeks in the intensive care unit,” said Colfax. “So very important that people are vaccinated.”

Residents can schedule appointments Tuesday through Saturday by visiting sf.gov/vaxtoyou.
