HAYWARD (CBS SF) – California State University officials announced Wednesday that they will require faculty, staff and students who have access to on-campus facilities to provide proof of a COVID vaccine booster vaccinated by February 2022.

The new requirement stipulates that the booster vaccination must be given by February 28th or six months after receiving the last dose of the original vaccination.

Officials said, however, that local circumstances may allow individual campuses to schedule an earlier compliance date for students and unrepresented staff.

“The vaccination, if necessary also a booster vaccination, remains our most effective strategy against infections and serious illnesses,” said CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro. “This is especially important given the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases across the state and nation as the Omicron variant spreads. The immediate implementation of the booster requirement will help to reduce the potential spread of the variant on the campuses that will be repopulated in January after the winter break. “

As already announced, the COVID-19 vaccination guideline of the CSU enables students and employees to apply for exceptions for medical and religious reasons.

The announcement came less than 24 hours after Governor Gavin Newsom issued a similar order for the state’s health workers.

In a Twitter video post, Newsom said it was taking steps to ensure there were enough healthy medical staff to handle a possible post-holiday surge in new cases.

“We all watch the news and have heard what President Biden said today about what was happening across the country and the rest of the world with the Omicron variant,” said the governor. “It’s not dissimilar to what’s happening here in the state of California. As a result, we are stepping up our efforts to get people vaccinated, but also to empower people. That’s why we’re going further today and calling for all healthcare workers to be reinforced – get the third admission, or at least the second admission when you get the J&J. “

Once again, Bay Area public health officials are talking about lifting the mask requirement for indoor use, using hospital admissions levels as the main benchmark. With hospital stays on the decline, it is safe to go without a mask.

But we’ve already seen this film. The numbers are going down, we’re relaxing the restrictions. The numbers are going up again. It seems people have escaped that the reason the numbers were dropping was because we had the restrictions.

Now is not the time to let our vigilance down for a number of reasons: We know that immunity is waning in those who were vaccinated early.

People who have received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine cannot yet receive a booster vaccine, and the latter vaccine is less effective than the mRNA versions. Children under the age of 12 cannot be vaccinated yet.

The weather is getting colder and people are relocating their activities indoors. And we don’t know whether another variant is coming up. Wouldn’t it be wiser to at least wait until everyone gets a booster if needed and younger kids can get their injections?

Get out of Facebook

Why would anyone trust a company that has its roots in providing college students with a platform to gossip about their classmates, dormitory, and roommates?

Facebook was not born with benevolence in mind, and that will now be apparent to anyone with social skills on social media.

Accommodation for the mentally ill

Regarding “SF Camp Solution Still Elusive” (Front Page, Oct 6), Thanks to Heather Knight for writing the article on the condition of the homeless in San Francisco.

One solution is to focus on building institutional housing for the mentally ill and drug users. The others have to WORK and take care of themselves – go elsewhere if they can’t afford to live here.

Affordable housing isn’t the solution as residents don’t want their traditional single family homes they worked for, punctuated by a two and four unit increase in housing – the city is only 7 miles by 7 miles!

Marilu Donnici, San Francisco

Mute the Blue Angels

Regarding “Ground the Air Show” (letters, October 5th): I fully agree with Ann and Richard Lanzerotti’s letter about the Blue Angels.

We shouldn’t have to endure the noise for days. And what about people who have pets who are scared by the noise? And I wonder about people with post-traumatic stress disorder who might be affected by the noise and the sight of the jets.

Couldn’t the money spent on the Blue Angels, including spending on fuel, be better used?

Brian Baum, San Francisco

Dems have done a lot

Regarding “The Party of Dysfunction” (Letters, Oct 7), I see you published a letter with that rather mundane and meaningless quote from Will Rogers that we have been hearing adore for decades. It wasn’t smart then, and it certainly isn’t now.

Do you mean the party that brought you social security, women’s suffrage, weekends, 40-hour weeks, the New Deal, the GI law, the civil rights law, and the voting law?

This is the same Democratic Party that elected the first black president, and the Democratic Party is the last party to have a budget surplus.

The Democratic Party never attempted a coup to overthrow a presidential election. And there is only one party that denies the effectiveness and necessity of COVID vaccinations and it is not the Democrats. There is something better you can do than post unoriginal and outdated frivolities.

By Sydney Johnson

Examiner employee author

Parents eagerly awaiting their children’s vaccinations could soon breathe a sigh of relief.

San Francisco announced on Friday that it is pressing ahead with immunization for children ages 5-11 as the Food and Drug Administration continues to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine for children under the age of 12.

“We anticipate that we can deliver 25,000 doses of vaccine per week at these locations to collectively meet demand from eligible children, adults who want a primary vaccination, and booster vaccinations of the third dose for those who qualify,” said Officials from the San Francisco Department of Public Health said in a public statement. “We need to underline that our top priority will be to ensure that all members of our community have access to the first and second dose, including children ages 5-11 if they are eligible.”

The announcement coincides with the release of a nationwide COVID-19 Vaccine Action Plan that explains how California is preparing to give booster vaccinations to immunocompromised and other eligible populations, as well as children under the age of 12.

Although schools in San Francisco have so far avoided a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for students, citing the county’s high vaccination rate among eligible students, other Bay Area counties such as Oakland Unified as well as the state’s largest school district, Los Angeles Unified, have chosen to require admission for eligible students.

State health authorities are similarly investigating that children 12 and over must be vaccinated to attend school.

“This conversation is part of what we are considering as a state, but no definitive action is being taken at the moment,” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, Minister for Health and Human Services, during a press conference on the state vaccination plan. “It was a long talk about vaccines in schools and their role in protecting students. … We watch the Los Angeles experience, understand what it means for students, families and staff, and watch other districts view the same thing. “

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an additional two-dose dose of the Pfizer vaccine for people 65 years of age and older, as well as those ages 12 to 64 who are due to certain medical conditions or the nature of the disease higher risk of serious illness have their work.

But the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are still at odds over who should get a booster vaccination. On Thursday, a CDC panel approved additional doses only for people over the age of 65 and people between the ages of 50 and 64 with pre-existing conditions.

Once fully approved by the CDC and FDA, individuals eligible for a booster vaccination are recommended to receive it at least six months after receiving their second dose of the vaccine.

As federal health officials continue to debate, The City prepares for another vaccine push, including younger San Franciscans. There are plans to use around 100 vaccination sites across San Francisco, including doctor’s offices, neighborhood clinics, pharmacies, and school locations that already offer COVID-19 vaccines. The sites have the capacity to deliver 200 to 300 doses per day, according to local health authorities.

Approximately 81% of the eligible population in San Francisco were fully vaccinated as of September 24th.

“Once the appropriate state and federal approvals are in place and individuals are eligible, we encourage people to schedule booster and vaccination appointments at their health facilities,” Health Department officials said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco police will stop publishing mug shots of arrested persons unless they pose a threat to the public to stop the perpetuation of racist stereotypes, the city police chief said Wednesday.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott and outside law enforcement experts said they believe the department would be the first in the nation to do so due to concerns about racial prejudice.

The accounting photos taken by the police when a person is arrested for a crime are often made public, regardless of whether the person is being prosecuted for the alleged crime or not. That can undermine the presumption of innocence and help maintain stereotypes, experts said.

“This is just a small step, but we hope others will consider it too,” said Scott.

Big cities like Los Angeles and New York already have policies against posting posting photos, but make exceptions. For example, the New York City Police Department, the largest in the country, publishes information about arrests but does not issue mug shots unless investigators believe it will cause more witnesses to come forward or to help find a suspect help. Georgia and New York have stopped posting posting photos to restrict websites asking people to remove their pictures and posting information.

Jack Glaser, a public policy professor at the University of California at Berkeley who studies racial stereotypes and whose work has consulted with Scott, said data shows that arrested blacks are more likely to have their cases turned down by prosecutors.

“This is possibly just part of the same problem where the police will stop and search the blacks at a lower suspicion threshold, and therefore their arrests are more likely to be unfounded,” Glaser said.

But the mug shots live on.

Numerous websites will post the mug shots regardless of whether someone has been convicted of a crime, and then charge a fee to those who want their photo removed. The phenomenon prompted the California attorney general to charge one of the largest operators with extortion, money laundering and identity theft.

Scott said this is helping Americans create an unfair association between people of color and criminal. The adoption of the new policy is part of an effort to stop the spread of negative minority stereotypes, which Scott, the black, experienced when he was out of uniform.

“You go into a department store and are followed and the security service looks at you suspiciously. I’ve seen that, ”said Scott.

In San Francisco, the only exceptions will be when a crime suspect poses a threat or when officials need help locating a suspect or person at risk, Scott said. According to the policy, the publication of photos or information about a person who has been arrested must also be approved by the Police Department’s PR team.

Eugene O’Donnell, a former NYPD officer and professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said not every department cracking down on the publication of mug shots gives a reason. The San Francisco Police Department is the first he knows is implementing policies to stop racial prejudice, he said.

He said preventing mug shots of suspects from being published on television shows and elsewhere should be part of a major judicial reform in the country.

“For a democratic society we are very unconcerned about human rights and the presumption of innocence,” said O’Donnell. “We are stealing freedom from people and ruining people’s reputations before anyone has ever made a decision about whether or not the person committed the crime.”

Nina Salarno, president of the Crime Victims United of California advocacy group, praised Scott’s efforts to address racial prejudice but expressed concern about how the department will decide which photos to publish. She said posting posting photos can help crime victims come forward.

“The only concern for the victims side is how they categorize and who decides which ones to release to the public.” Asked Salarno.
