The generosity of a Lower East Side bagel shop artisan was repaid with a brick in the face.

The 63-year-old victim had just offered a cup of coffee and a bagel to a local beggar when the attack began, as shown by police.

The violence quickly escalated, with the assailant first threatening the victim with a chair, then hitting the handyman with a vacuum cleaner, and finally hurling the brick at his receding victim.

No arrests were made in the case as the craftsman was treated for a cut on his nose from the projectile, the managing director of Kossar Bagels & Bialys said on Tuesday.

The victim came up to him and said, ‘You should carry on. We can get you a bagel, we can get you a coffee, ‘”said the manager. “Because that’s what we usually do when you see a homeless man out there. … The guy was apparently offended and unfortunately attacked one of my boys. “

The confrontation started in front of the store and then continued behind a nearby store, the police said. The victim, who tried to fend off the attacker with a stick, was treated at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in Lower Manhattan for a cut open nose and a bruised wrist.

“He was really shaken because nobody expected that, you know?” Said the manager of the handyman. “He went to the hospital and was examined to make sure everything was okay.”

The manager said the homeless man showed up at the store on Grand St. last month and another shop clerk saw the suspect arrested near a train station at 8:20 a.m. last Wednesday, prior to the attack. He’s still in the neighborhood, but manages to escape the police when the store clerks call the police.

“Personally, I think I hope they get it just because people with mental illness need help,” said the manager. “Let’s get them help.”

Police officers are asking for help from the public to identify and track him down. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls are treated confidentially.

The recent fake ad riot on Facebook has highlighted how unreliable social media reports can be. But a few years ago I learned this lesson firsthand – and in a very unexpected way.

My story actually starts back when I was in sixth grade and got the title role in my class production of Mary Poppins. It was the height of my elementary school career and seemed like a surefire sign that I was meant for the Broadway star. I beat out the lyrics for “Spoonful of Sugar” while dramatically pouring medicine onto a spoon. I smiled cautiously when the boy who played Bert serenaded me with “Jolly Holiday”. Our appearances were rewarded with seemingly endless standing ovations. Kindergarten children chased me for my autograph for weeks.

Unfortunately, my start was short-lived. A series of disappointing auditions in junior high productions convinced me that a career in front of the limelight was not in my future. But I still had Mary. I would always have Maria.

At least that’s what I thought.

A surprising revelation

Fast forward to Facebook FB Invention, + 0.01% and the Rise of Throwback Thursday (#TBT) when everyone is celebrating their past (or embarrassing their kids and friends) by posting pictures from a long time ago. Long-neglected class pictures appeared weekly in my Facebook news feed. So I wasn’t too surprised on a Thursday afternoon when a Facebook friend and ex-classmate – we’ll call her Karen M. – posted a photo of herself as a birdwife from sixth grade Mary Poppins production.

What surprised me, however, was Sarah B’s comment: “I was a chimney sweep. Jennifer K. was Mary Poppins … oh how I remember it! ‘

My jaw dropped and my eyes almost fell out of my head as I saw the words on my computer screen. What? What? Jennifer K. wasn’t Mary Poppins! I was Mary Poppins!

I immediately went to correct the record, but my fingers caught on the keys. It seemed kind of pathetic jumping in so quickly and reminding others of my time in the spotlight. Better to let someone else do it, I thought. Surely some graduate of Miss Schmitt’s class would want to pay homage where it is due.

I’ve waited and updated the page. Nothing.

I went back to a work project, then came back and freshened up again. Now there were comments about how terribly cute Karen M. looked in her plaid fringed scarf. But what about Sarah B.’s statement? Not a word. Not then, and not when I checked 10 minutes later. Or half an hour later. Or the dozen or so extra times that I went back that evening. What happened?

Deleted from Facebook?

It is often said that browsing Facebook is the most humiliating experience and I can’t disagree with that anymore. Everyone on Facebook looks happier than me. Everyone has more exotic vacations. Every Thanksgiving turkey is a prettier golden brown shade. Everyone on Facebook is better than me. It’s okay. I made peace with that.

But that was a whole new level of deterioration. Facebook didn’t just belittle me. Now it had actually wiped me out.

As far as Facebook was concerned, I was never Mary Poppins – and who should I argue with? I didn’t have my own pictures. All I had were my memories – and how conclusive were they when the internet was here now? It was a 21st century version of that unanswerable question: If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound? If something happens but Facebook doesn’t acknowledge it … did it really happen?

The next morning I went about my normal business and felt anything but normal. Instead, I felt kind of transparent, like the cashier at the grocery store could put her hand right through me like people did with Patrick Swayze in the movie “Ghost”. Yes, it was ridiculous – it was just a sixth grade play; it was just Facebook. But it was still sad. How could no one remember that I was up there on that stage?

Set the record right

And then, as I got into my car, a warning came on my cell phone: Karen M. tagged you on Facebook. I held my breath hoping this was what I thought and clicked my way to Facebook. Indeed, there was Karen M’s comment, glorious in its simplicity:

“I think Barbara S. was Mary Poppins.”

Oh happy day! If Mark Zuckerberg had been around I would have wrapped my arms around him. After a short time, Sarah B. agreed that she was wrong, and Jennifer K. spoke up to say that she had actually played the little girl Jane. Then Brad R., who played her little brother Michael, summed it up – with the word you say when there is nothing else to say:

Supercalifragilisticxpialidocious, he wrote.

For me, this #TBT post and its aftermath was a game changer. It showed me that Facebook is a funhouse mirror in which our reflection is not formed by what we do, but by what others make of us. No wonder people check their posts with such anticipation and hope for an endless stream of “likes”, “favorites” and other positive emoticons.

Although I still use it both professionally and personally, I have taught myself to look at the real world when I need recognition or a memory that is important to me. As a source of emotional comfort, Facebook is a fickle friend.

Far from being practically perfect in every way, Julie Andrews once put a bumper sticker on her car that said, “Mary Poppins is a junkie.”

It was a joking, failed attempt to banish the sugary reputation she had for the role – but if she’d actually told the truth behind the classic movie, she might have made it.

The actress shocked the kids in the film with her cursing and smoking on set – while co-star Dick Van Dyke was an alcoholic who struggled with suicidal thoughts while dancing around singing “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”

Meanwhile, the writer of the original Poppins novels was at war with the film’s producer, Walt Disney, obsessed with the occult, pursued by allegations of racism, and accused of ruining her adopted son’s life.

Matthew Garber, who played the cheerful young Michael Banks in the 1964 box office hit, later tragically died at the age of 21 after contracting hepatitis in India.

Despite all of this, the film remains a popular family favorite – and a sequel, “Mary Poppins Returns,” which began on December 21st with Emily Blunt as the bag-carrying nanny in the lead role.

Karen Dotrice, now 63, who played the young Jane Banks in the first film, is not surprised at his esteemed status. She says that despite what was going on backstage, the entire cast realized they were involved in something special.

She said, “We felt like one big family and we all had some fun together that felt really magical.”

But she still remembers her shock as an eight-year-old when she saw Andrews, then 28, in full Edwardian nanny outfit – having a cigarette and exchanging blue language with the crew.

Dotrice added, “There was a curse. Julie Andrews smoked on the set. It was a very real 1960s set, I can tell you that. At first they were polite to minors, but that was soon over. “

Van Dyke has admitted that by the time he played chimney sweep Bert, he was an alcoholic and would show up for shootings the night before.

The actor said, “I would go to work with a terrible hangover, which is really tough when I dance.”

Van Dyke, 37 at the time of filming and now 92, also revealed that alcohol led him into deep depression, revealing, “I’ve been in big trouble, you are becoming suicidal and you think you just can’t move on.”

For the most notorious part of his performance, the Cockney voice, which is still cited as the worst accent in the history of cinema, he does not blame the alcohol.

He blames Andrews for this.

He once stated, “I was working with a cast of almost all of the British and neither Julie nor anyone else said, ‘You know, you should be working on that accent.'”

Van Dyke’s accent is widely considered to be one of the worst in film history.Walt Disney Studios

In the meantime, he was aware that PL Travers – the author of the Poppins books – was not happy with the cast of himself or his co-star.

He said, “She hated Julie and she hated me.”

In fact, as described in the 2013 film about the making of Saving Mr. Banks, Travers hated pretty much anything to do with the five-Academy Award-winning adaptation.

For 20 years she’d sent Walt Disney to packing every time he tried to buy the rights to her stories – and when she finally gave in, she bitterly regretted it.

Her own Poppins character, who first appeared in a novel in 1934, was cold, intimidating, and prone to utterances with “a superior sniff.”

And yet the nanny was here, cute, smiling, in love and dancing with animated penguins. She took it as an insult.

After the premiere, Travers told Walt Disney, “All the animation has to go,” without realizing it was too late. The Mughal corrected her and said, “Pamela, the boat has sailed.”

Travers retaliated by refusing permission to do a sequel – allegedly even in her will that “no Americans should ever be allowed to work on a Poppins project again.”

PL Travers apparently hated the scene in which Van Dyke danced with animated penguins.Walt Disney Studios

She died in 1996 – and Disney is now behind the new film with the approval of her estate.

Ironically, the movie was a passion for Disney and the books a passion for Travers for the same reason – troubled childhood.

Dotrice told The Sun, “PL Travers’ father was angry with her. Walt Disney had a terrible relationship with his father. ”The Mughal saw the story as a fantasy of children turning a cruel father – like his own – into a loving one.

As a result, he changed the character of Mr. Banks from the kind in the books to cold and aloof.

And his painful memories of being an unhappy kid – forced to get up at 4:30 am to deliver newspapers in the snow – also made him determined to treat the kid stars on Poppins well.

Dotrice recalled, “I learned why Uncle Walt was so nice to me and my family because he didn’t want another 8-year-old to have the s-y experiences that he had.”

Travers had seen the character of Mr. Banks as an opportunity to bring back the bank manager father she idolized, but who had died of alcoholism at the age of 7.

She was horrified that he was now being made the villain.

Travers was born Helen Goff in the wilds of Queensland, Australia in 1899 and moved to England at the age of 25.

Walt Disney Studios

And although she created the thoroughly right character of Mary Poppins, her life was very unconventional by the standards of the time.

She enjoyed romantic relationships with both men and women.

For 10 years she lived with Madge Burnand, the daughter of the editor of Punch – who once took a picture of Travers frolicking topless on an Italian beach.

Travers later fell in love with the poet Francis McNamara, an Irish man who once told the author: “Mary Poppins with her cool, green core of sex has captivated me forever.”

Single again at the age of 40, Travers adopted a young boy named Camillus from a large, troubled family in Ireland.

What Camillus didn’t find out until he was 17 was that he had a twin brother, Anthony, whom Travers didn’t want to care for, even though his parents begged them to take them both with him.

When he learned the truth, he drank with his siblings, a habit that would develop into debilitating alcoholism for both of them.

Camillus died in 2011 as a result of his addiction.

The boys’ eldest brother, Joseph Hone, said, “I don’t think Travers was fit to raise children.”

She had reportedly chosen Camillus as her twin on the advice of her astrologer – and later became increasingly obsessed with the stars, the occult, and mysticism.

Walt Disney Studios

The popularity of Travers’ books faded over the years as racism in them became unacceptable – especially the shocking descriptions of black Americans.

In contrast, those involved in the film continue to thrive on their association with the smash hit.

Andrews, 83 – a stage star when she won the role – caused a sensation and landed an Academy Award for Best Actress and her role in The Sound Of Music. She is a lady now.

Van Dyke overcame his demons and became one of the most recognizable faces on US television.

Dotrice continued playing until the age of 24, then decided, “I’d rather just get married and become a mother and that’s it.”

Tragically, Garber, who played her brother Michael, only lived to be 21 years old.

Despite rumors that drugs played a role in contracting the hepatitis that killed him after a trip to India, his family insisted it was caused by eating bad meat.

He and Dotrice made a perfect team and worked on other films together as kids.

She said, “We had a great childhood. We shot three films together. “

“I wish he were here to make those comments too.”

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – As students prepare to return to campus later this month, the East Side Union High School District is expanding access to mental health care providers for students, families and teachers.

On Thursday, the district announced a partnership with Care Solace – an organization dedicated to simplifying the coordination of mental health care by offering a 24/7 Care Concierge and a bespoke online tool to help yourself Connect with community psychiatric care and remote.

CONTINUE READING: COVID Reopening: California Allows Indoor Meetings, Concerts on April 15; Test or vaccination required

District leaders said this is especially important as people return to learning in person and recover from the effects of the pandemic.

“We understand the adverse effects Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) have on student performance. This pandemic has been a traumatic experience for all of our students to one degree or another, ”said Pattie Cortese, member of the ESUHSD Board of Trustees. “We have to offer them opportunities to process what they have experienced over the past year.”

Cortese also stressed the need for staff wellbeing so that they can be fully present for the students.

District leaders say the most notable aspect of Care Solace is its navigation system, which connects students and staff to a database of behavioral and mental health resources to find “vetted” therapists and programs in minutes.

The database also contains resources for drug abuse treatment.

In addition, the Care Concierge is always available in any language to help all students and employees regardless of their insurance status.

“With Care Solace, we are moving from asking families, staff, and students to navigate the mental health system on their own, to providing support that allows us to walk side by side with them through the process,” said Dr. Chaun Powell, ESUHSD Director for Student Services.

The campuses will be taught in person on April 12th. Care Solace services are already available free of charge to all students, staff and their families in the East Side Union High School District.
