Recently, as my family cruised up Highway 50 toward Lake Tahoe, we glimpsed the destruction wrought by last summer’s Caldor Fire: charcoal forests up and down the ridges; metal roofs melted into puddles; and chimneys protruding from foundations, some of the more than 1,000 structures destroyed.

The sight shocked us. But it wasn’t the first time we’ve driven past the charred remnants of a megafire. Those have become a part of the West Coast landscape as much as its storied beaches and granite peaks.

For my 10-year-old twins, Didi and Gege, their childhood memories of summer take place against a backdrop of a fire season burning ever hotter, ever longer.

It’s a sickening “here we go again” ritual of checking the air quality before heading outdoors, rearranging or canceling activities, and worrying about the people caught in the crosshairs of wildfires while also wondering if the blaze might reach us too.

On the other side of the lake, smoke from the Washburn Fire in Yosemite National Park was starting to drift into the Tahoe basin, a line of smudge looming over the mountains.

The next day, as the haze thickened, blurring the view, Didi said, “I don’t want to be in a fire! I don’t want my stuff to burn up.”

We assured him that the fire wasn’t nearby, but he and his twin brother have experienced threats closer to home: planned power outages, red flag warnings, a sky that turned orange due to wildfire smoke.

And for a while now, they’ve been complaining about the heat in California.

“Why can’t we go somewhere it’s raining?” Didy asked.

Places that rain in the summer are usually humid, we explained. Then he announced that when he’s an adult, he’s going to move somewhere colder.

That could be in San Francisco or along the coast — if the iconic fog is still around then; it too is at risk due to climate change.

“I like Tahoe better in the winter,” Gege said. “I like the snow. Why didn’t we come more often then?”

It was a dry winter, we said. Trying not to fan the proverbial flames, we didn’t mention that global warming is a threat to the future of the ski industry. This week, Britain reached record highs in a heat wave, with wildfires also sweeping through parts of France and Spain.

As much as parents might want to shield their children from the gloomy forecasts, young people know what’s happening. In a survey released last fall, nearly 60% of the 10,000 respondents — people age 16 to 25 in 10 countries — said they were “very or extremely” worried about climate change.

About 65% of those surveyed agreed that governments are failing young people, while just a little more than a third agreed that governments acted according to science. Countries with the highest percentage of those worried were those already hard hit by the climate crisis, including the Philippines, India and Brazil.

Yet despite the havoc humanity wreaks, nature finds ways to persist. At least for now.

As waters receded in Lake Tahoe due to drought, dormant seeds of lupines became exposed and bloomed in a spectacular show in June, reportedly the most abundant since 2015.

On our trip in mid-July, we hiked through pine trees, our family marveling at the red blaze of Indian paintbrush; purple checkerbloom; patches of thimbleberries; and masses of mountain coyote mint, beardtongues, yarrow, bird’s-foot trefoils, and Woods’ roses.

Saying their names felt like an incantation, to protect the wildflowers and call them forth, now and in the future.

A continuing rise in mortgage rates along with declining interest from homebuyers led the median San Francisco home price to drop 7% year-over-year to $1.38 million in August, according to a report from real estate company Redfin.

The San Francisco metro—along with neighboring Oakland where prices dropped 1.4%—were the only two metro areas that saw median sales prices decline during the last four weeks. By contrast, nationwide median home prices rose 6% over the same time period.

“Home prices in San Francisco are quickly approaching 2019 levels as they contract in reaction to higher mortgage rates,” said Taylor Marr, Redfin’s deputy chief economist. “Tech jobs fueled the boom in SF, making it unaffordable, and the exodus of tech workers is also driving a bust right now.”

The federal government’s efforts to fight inflation have pushed 30-year mortgage rates to 5.89%, the highest since November 2009. In August, fewer homes sold above their listing price than at any time since February 2021 and the typical home went for 0.3% below its final list price.

Laila Salma, a real estate agent with Salma & Company, said the drop in home values ​​is notable but placed the decline in the context of a larger cooldown in the city’s residential real estate market.

An August market report from real estate brokerage Compass noted other signs of a real estate cooldown, including a rise in the number of days a typical listing spends on the market, the number of overall listings and the number of price reductions for properties (up 117 % year over year). Though a “letter of intent” ceremony is typically held when a high school athlete announces where they’ll go to college, one Kentucky high schooler had his own to sign with a plumbing company.

According to WDKY, Montgomery County High School senior Jacob Bradley signed a letter of intent to join Fast Flow Plumbing after his graduation this month. He’ll join the company as an apprentice and work under a master plumber for two years before earning his journeyman’s license.

It’s just more of my style,” Bradley told WKYT after signing with the Fast Flow Plumbing. “I was never really wanting to be an accountant or sit down.”

“I enjoy working with my hands a lot and just the environment and those types of people,” he added.

Bradley’s ceremony, which took place May 18, was the first non-athletic signing event for the high school, counselor Lacy Gross told WKYT.

“This is something that we have done several times for our athletes who are attending college upon graduation,” Gross explained. “But this is something new here at Montgomery County High School, but I hope that this will continue.”

“His dad and I are just over the moon,” Bradley’s mother, Angie, told WKYT. “Actually, he’s a great kid and we are very lucky.”

But plumbing isn’t entirely new for the graduating senior. Bradley spent half of every school day learning the trade since meeting Fast Flow Plumbing Vice President Ben Crum at a career fair.

“We are willing to invest in anyone that comes to us,” Crum told WKYT of recruiting students into the field. “We want to make sure they have the opportunity in two years to get their journeyman’s license.”

According to US News & World Report, plumbers, on average, made about a salary of $56,000 in 2020, with some earning over $75,000. The median salary for plumbers has increased steadily over the last decade, the outlet reported.

After the NFL Draft concluded, the San Francisco 49ers brought in a duo of talented UNC football players as undrafted free agents.

The Wilmington, North Carolina native was not utilized much in the Tar Heels’ offensive scheme, as he recorded just 37 catches for 439 yards and four touchdowns over the last two seasons. However, he does possess some traits that make him an interesting undrafted free agent target.

Extends his hands to make the reception away from his frame. Gives effort blocking at the line of scrimmage and downfield, and he squares into defenders to take them from the action.

His lack of size, combined with his below-average and average blocking ability, are the likely reasons why he wasn’t selected as part of the NFL Draft. However, he’s a hard-working player who has room to develop and could benefit from working alongside a player like George Kittle, who is regarded as one of the top tight ends in the entire sport.

If he can impress early on in rookie camp, maybe there will be a spot for Walston on the 49ers’ tight end depth chart moving forward.

Some visitors say things are still slow around town. Economic experts and locals agree that there are signs that a recovery may be right on the horizon.

After nearly two years of hearing about businesses struggling to find a way through the pandemic, major retailers are now moving into San Francisco. IKEA is moving into a building on Market Street and just three blocks away, Whole Foods is putting the finishing touches on its newest location set to open in just a matter of weeks.

Rodney Fong from the city’s Chamber of Commerce says there is interest in San Francisco from major retailers. “IKEA coming, Whole Foods on Market Street. These are large retailers that are occupying space that, as you mentioned, have sat vacant for quite a while,” said Fong. “This is an exciting time. We think these are little barometers, little indicators of what’s happening in San Francisco.”

Importantly, major retailers are just the beginning. “Yes, you need those formula retail, sort of anchor tenants, and that then stimulates smaller businesses around it,” said Fong.

The key to San Francisco’s economy is the tourism trade, and now the hotel formerly known at the Sir Francis Drake is preparing to reopen and rebrand as the Beacon Grand. The hotels in Union Square acting like anchor businesses, bringing visitors and foot traffic to the area. “This is a landmark hotel, and a very important one to put more energy in Union Square,” said Fong.

Fong points to this past weekend’s Chinese New Year Parade as evidence that people want to come back to the city. “A couple hundred thousand people were in San Francisco enjoying the Chinese New Year Parade. Those are signs people want to get back into the city.”

Longtime residents say they’ve watched businesses shut down over the pandemic, and are now starting to see signs of life around town. “Yeah, if you went down to Fisherman’s Wharf yesterday it was very, very crowded. Pier 39 was packed,” said Francis Howard from San Francisco.

But some visitors say while the city is coming back, it’s nowhere near the levels of pre-pandemic activity. “At least for us, it feels like it’s still in transition,” said Priti Wirasinghe from Sunnyvale. “Last night we stepped out at about 8:30 pm, 9 o’clock, we were hoping to get some dessert and there was nowhere to really closed. Everything seemed closed.”

The chamber says the city is like a lot of little interconnected micro-economies. One of the major ones that is still struggling is the Financial District. Fong says he’s hearing with the omicron surge fading, several big employers have told him they’re planning on bringing workers back in person within the next two weeks or so.

Ben Partridge traveled far from home to play golf at Hutchinson Community College.

A native of London, England, Partridge was recruited by the Blue Dragons head coach Chris Young and decided to join the Hutchinson men’s golf team. Since then, he has outdone himself a lot and led the team to a national NJCAA championship.

Partridge was also the NJCAA Individual Champion and decided to sign and sign a letter of intent to play golf at the University of San Francisco.

Partridge was named a Jack Nicklaus Award winner for the spring golf season and also received many awards for being the first team in the junior college world. Now he’s excited to take the next step in his golf career and join the West Coast program.

“I got on really well with the guys on the team and also with the coach,” said Partridge. “I can imagine that I get more benefit from San Francisco than the other schools I’ve spoken to. So I’m looking forward to it.”

San Francisco is the nation’s 29th golf program in the NCAA Div. I national rankings. The university also ranks 14th in the nation for enrolling international students, according to the US News and World Report.

Young said he and his program were fortunate to have players getting through Hutchinson and switching to NCAA programs, like Charlie Crockett, who went to the University of Missouri and Lake Leroux in Wichita State and Eastern Kentucky.

“Hopefully we can take this in the right direction,” said Young. “We have seven kids in the top 90 (national ranking). I don’t think we’ve ever done that before.”

Partridge was attending TCU, UTEP, and San Francisco when deciding which college to go to, so choosing San Francisco for more than just golf.

“When I got there, it reminded me a lot of home, a lot of London,” said Partridge. “I’m really looking forward to spending time in my home country. This business administration course, this business administration course, is unbelievable, and the academic side, I think, is important for me after golf. After golf, it is business administration, and of course having a good degree is an advantage . “

Unlike his last engagement (later to Hutch), Partridge took his time with the process. In early September, Partridge said he visited San Francisco and had plenty of time between that Monday and last Monday to consider and weigh up his options before ultimately settling on the West Coast school.

With the confidence to take the next level, Partridge believes this will help him do better at tournaments this coming spring for the golf season. He said the spring tournaments would help him land on the right foot and defend his national title as well.

The ambition and goal is to go pro, Partridge said. That’s another reason he chose San Francisco because it will give him a chance to potentially get a foot in the door of the PGA Tour. ”

Partridge attended Hutchinson Community College in 2019 and signed his letter of intent to attend college. His first golf season had to wait due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the wait has been worth it after such a dominant spring season.

“My second year really went by in a flash,” said Partridge. “I didn’t think it would go away so quickly. We are almost at the end of the fall semester. Another semester here. I’ve put a lot of work into it and I’m looking forward to it. “

PISCATAWAY, NJ – General Plumbing Supply Inc. (GPS) has signed a 300,000 square foot industrial lease at the Piscataway Logistics Center in northern New Jersey. The property, set on 16 acres and 36 feet headroom with ample parking for cars and trailers, will serve as the headquarters, showroom, and distribution center for GPS. Avison Young’s Tim Cadigan, Matthew Turse and Grant Otto represented the landlord, a partnership between Transwestern Development Co. and QuadReal Property Group, in the rental negotiations. Ed English and Ron Ganter from Avison Young and Michael Schipper from Blau & Berg represented GPS.
