EDWARDS, Colo. (KCNC) — A father and his son who worked in a utility room beneath a Beaver Creek Resort Hotel were injured Friday.

The Eagle River Fire Protection District reported that its crews responded at 2 p.m. to The Charter in Beaver Creek for two people injured.

These crews were escorted to two injured men near a gate to the parking garage beneath the hotel. Both men were taken to hospitals.

“A valve assembly in the engine room appears to have released a large amount of high-pressure water,” the fire department said in a press release. “The reporter was extremely disturbed.”

The force of the water pushed against a wall of cinder blocks, partially collapsing them.

Outside the parking garage, water turned to ice. As a result, Offerson Road was closed from Avondale Lane to Village Road, cutting vehicle access to and from the ski area behind the hotel in half.

Eagle County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Amber Barrett told CBS4 Monday the two are a father and son. The father suffered more serious injuries and was taken to an undisclosed Denver hospital, Barrett said. The son stayed at Vail Valley Medical Center.

The extent of her injuries and her health are unknown, she added.

Barrett called the incident a “serious accident.”

Barrett said the partially collapsed wall was unsustainable. For this reason, the emergency services decided that the hotel did not have to be evacuated.

Neither the fire department nor the spokesman for the sheriff’s office knew whether the two men were employed by the hotel to work on the water system.

CBS4 reached out to the hotel’s owners Monday night for a statement. This story will be updated with every reply.

BOSTON (CBS / AP) – A woman from the Peninsula who is also the chief executive officer of a California liquor distribution company pleaded guilty less than a month ahead of the scheduled trial, according to court records Tuesday.

Marci Palatella will be the 33rd parent to admit prosecution in the case that uncovered a system where wealthy parents paid large amounts of money to put their children in top schools across the country.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: VTA officials hope to be able to partially restore light rail traffic by Sunday

Her plea deal with prosecutors requires her to sit behind bars for six weeks and pay a fine of $ 250,000. She also agreed to do 500 hours of community service and two years of supervised release, with the first six months in domestic custody, under the plea deal that must be accepted by a judge.

Palatella and two other parents were due to stand before the jury next month in the first trial since the so-called “Operation Varsity Blues” in March 2019.

The Hillsborough woman will admit she paid $ 500,000 to bring her son to the University of Southern California as a football recruit even though he wouldn’t actually play on the team, prosecutors said.

She will plead guilty to conspiracy charges to commit honest postal fraud. Prosecutors have agreed to dismiss the other charge she faced – conspiracy to commit federal bribery – in exchange for her admission of guilt.

Palatella was among 50 parents, sports coaches and others charged in 2019 in the case that implicated elite universities across the country.

Only a handful of parents are still fighting the allegations. More than 30 other parents have pleaded guilty, including TV actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, and Loughlin’s fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli.

The two parents on trial next month – Gamal Abdelaziz and John Wilson – are also charged with paying bribes to bring their children to the University of Southern California as bogus athletic recruits.

The selection of the jury is to begin on September 8th.

The Kerr County man, suspected in the last week’s shooting of his wife and son, died Tuesday night in a San Antonio hospital from injuries that authorities suspect were self-inflicted.

Kerr County Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer reported the death of Mark “Cornbread” Cormier, 54, at the San Antonio Military Medical Center on Wednesday.

He had been treated there for a shot in the head on Friday in connection with the incident in which Candace “Candy” Cormier, 61, and Jeremiah Cormier, 10, died.

“The investigation is ongoing,” said Hierholzer. “We’re still looking at your computers and trying to figure out a subject.”

CONNECTED: The Kerr County suspect reportedly asked for forgiveness

He said an injured Mark Cormier showed up early Friday at a neighbor’s home in the Shalako neighborhood on Goat Creek Road (FM 1338) asking for forgiveness for unspecified acts.

Rescue workers arrived to find the bodies of Candy Cormier, a real estate agent, and her adopted son in their home.

Mark Cormier, who owned a chimney sweep business, declined to speak to investigators before getting into an ambulance, Hierholzer said, and was unavailable due to a heart attack he suffered on the way to the hospital.

Hierholzer said two pistols had been seized at the scene and no one was suspected of being involved in the shootings.

FREMONT (CBS SF) – Police are still looking for a run over driver who killed an elderly Livermore man on June 30, leaving his family heartbroken.

The victim’s only child, Howard Sham, 24, said he was struggling with a great loss and an enormous financial burden. He asks the driver to report.

CONTINUE READING: Dixie Fire grows to 197,487 acres; 21% included

Allen Sham was a 69-year-old father and husband who died a week after being hit by a car on Peralta Avenue near Dusterberry Way before 10:30 p.m.

Police need public help to locate the suspect’s dark limousine, which can be seen in a surveillance photo. The front bumper, hood, or windshield area can be moderately damaged.

“I think I’m more angry than sad because someone just hit you and ran, you know?” Said Shame. “What kind of person does that … that’s my question, what if it were your father?”

Howard Sham lives in San Diego, where he takes a year off to work while studying. He says that before his father lost his job years ago, he was a craftsman and mechanic.

“He was hardworking,” said Sham. “I mean, even when he was out of work, he was still trying to find ways to make money and help. I just know that he did his best. “

At the time of the crash, Sham was pushing a cart full of recyclables and personal items, according to Fremont Police. After the collision, the car stopped briefly, but the driver did not try to look at Sham after hitting him from behind.

Sham said his father may have been collecting cans for cash.

Sham’s mother suffered a stroke at the beginning of the pandemic and is now in a nursing home. He started a GoFundMe page to pay for his father’s funeral and to pay his mother’s medical bills.

While police are still looking for clues to the investigation, a Fremont resident said it is not uncommon to see accidents on this stretch of road.
