A trough of low-pressure was spread across the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday morning, delivering heavy drizzle to many locations, the National Weather Service said.

A weather gauge in San Francisco’s Sunset District had measured 0.05 inches of rain as of 7:30 am on Wednesday. A gauge near Dolores Park picked up 0.01 inches.

The weather service’s downtown San Francisco gauge measured 0.01 inches. Is that a record? Not quite. In 2011, the gauge hit 0.03 inches on July 13. This record could be broken later this morning, said Dalton Behringer, a forecaster with the weather service’s Monterey office.

Up to 0.01 inches fell across the East Bay hills. Half Moon Bay has seen the highest amount of precipitation so far with 0.06 inches.

Behringer said residents in the Santa Cruz Mountains reported rain in their gutters to the weather service.

“It’s a light summer rain,” Behringer said. “I wouldn’t say it’s entirely unusual, especially in coastal locations.”

Behringer said the low-pressure system pushed into Northern California from the Pacific Northwest and it’s competing with a ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin.

“There’s a battle between a ridge of high pressure over the Great Basin and a trough out over the Pacific Northwest, and that trough is currently keeping us under that cool onshore flow,” he explained. “As we move into the weekend, some of the guidance is hinting at the ridge winning and warming up.”

Temperatures will start to climb Thursday with Saturday expected to be the hottest day of the week. On Saturday, afternoon highs are forecast to be in the 90s in inland locations and the 70s along the coast.

San Francisco Lands Top Spot In Clean Energy Rankings For First Time

San Francisco took top honors in ACEEE’s 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, followed by Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Minneapolis; and Boston and New York.

San Francisco took top honors for the first time in the sixth edition of the 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, followed by Seattle (#2), Washington, DC (#3), Minneapolis (#4), and Boston and New York (tied for #5). The annual American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) report ranks 100 major US cities on efforts including reducing energy waste in homes and buildings and moving toward a cleaner power grid—and doing so equitably. It identifies the leading cities, the most improved, and those with ample room for progress, citing opportunities for each to advance.

Cities earned credit for policies and programs such as requiring large buildings to reduce energy waste or subsidizing access to transit and other efficient transportation options for historically marginalized groups, and for their success in reducing their overall greenhouse gas emissions.

San Francisco launched a new program that provides free home energy-saving kits to residents in areas that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution and are economically disadvantaged. The city also updated its energy code for new residential and commercial buildings with requirements that will reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and it was the top scorer on transportation policies.

“I’m so proud of the all the work we’ve done in San Francisco to achieve the top City Clean Energy ranking this year,” said San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed. “Thanks to consistent investments in our city’s clean energy program, innovative policies to decarbonize our buildings, and advancing environmental solutions centered around equity, we’ve shown that it’s possible to drastically reduce our carbon emissions while growing our population and economy. I’m looking forward to our continued work with ACEEE and cities around the nation to continue striving toward bold climate action.”

Source: 2021 City Clean Energy Scorecard, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)

Making Moves In Transportation

This year was the first time ACEEE assessed cities’ progress toward their climate goals for the transportation sector—which are based on either greenhouse gas emissions or vehicle miles traveled—using a comprehensive review of their reported data. Twenty-five cities have adopted such goals, and only three are on track to achieve them. Seventeen of the 25 cities could not provide sufficient data to assess their progress. San Diego showed the strongest progress in this category, achieving a nearly 3% annual reduction in transportation greenhouse gas emissions since 2015.

The report also found that cities’ most recent clean energy policy actions have primarily focused on sectors other than transportation. Of the 177 new city clean energy actions scored in the report, only 23 were related to transportation, which is responsible for the largest share of US emissions.

“Most cities haven’t set a goal for reducing vehicle travel or transportation emissions, and of those that have, only a few show progress, so that points to a big area for improvement,” said Stefen Samarripas, local policy manager at ACEEE and lead author of the report. “From investments in transit to incentives for installing electric vehicle charging stations and zoning changes that allow dense, mixed-use development, cities have to use all their tools to support an affordable transportation system that works better for all while slashing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Additional Findings

The report, which evaluated cities from May 2, 2020, to July 1, 2021, also found:

Seattle’s advocacy in the state legislature allowed its municipal utility to expand its electric vehicle charging initiatives; Washington, DC earned points for incentivizing the purchase of new electric vehicles by waiving the excise taxes on them.

Madison (Wisconsin) (#39), Charlotte (#42), and Honolulu (#24) are this year’s most-improved cities. Madison increased its investments in renewable energy and adopted requirements to install electric vehicle chargers in all multifamily and some commercial buildings. Charlotte created a program to train energy efficiency and renewable energy workers and directed city agencies to purchase efficient vehicles. Honolulu adopted a new climate action plan.

Many cities dropping in rank fell by not keeping up with peers who have adopted leading clean energy practices, increasingly rewarded in the Scorecard’s metrics.

Many cities encountered funding, staffing, and operational challenges for their clean energy efforts because of the COVID-19 pandemic, though a small number adapted their operations and plans quickly and effectively. Overall, the pandemic slowed many cities’ actions through 2020, but efforts generally recovered in the first half of 2021 with a renewed focus on the buildings sector.

“COVID relief and infrastructure funds from Congress provide a big opportunity for all cities to step up their efforts,” said Samarripas. “Cities can invest in upgrading buildings to cut costly energy waste. They can invest in efficient transportation, including public transit, to help lower-income residents reduce their travel costs and protect the climate. The leading cities provide helpful models for those at much earlier stages of their efforts.”

The Scorecard ranks cities in five policy areas: community-wide initiatives, buildings policies, transportation policies, and local government operations.

For the first time, the Scorecard grouped cities into six types based on the population of their metropolitan areas and their rates of growth, allowing for an examination of trends across city types. The Scorecard also includes a new analysis and scoring of cities’ smart growth strategies and a new tool (developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory) to quantify the potential of a city’s transportation system to connect people to services and activities in an energy-efficient, convenient, and cost-effective way.

You can read the full report online, including individual fact sheets that describe each city’s performance and recommend ways to improve.

Sometimes, in my daily wanderings through downtown San Francisco, I look to the sky and ponder all the empty office buildings and wonder: What’s going to happen to this city?

For decades, San Francisco and neighboring Silicon Valley have assumed they would remain the world’s top spot for technology and innovation, riding a revenue train that would never ever stop.

Well, our choo choo has slowed down quite a bit. And there’s no guarantee of return ridership. A recent study by the research firm Real Estate Witch ranks San Francisco as the 16th best city in the country to launch a startup, far behind places like Las Vegas (No. 1), Salt Lake City (No. 2) and Miami (No 4). The metrics considered in the study included favorable tax laws, access to an educated workforce and employment growth. San Francisco didn’t stack up. The cost of doing business in the Bay Area has been prohibitive, to put it gently.

That has worried local tech leaders. I recently spoke to Jennifer Stojkovic, executive director of sf.citi, a San Francisco tech trade organization founded by venture capital legend Ron Conway 10 years ago, in partnership with then Mayor Ed Lee. Conway, a centrist Democrat who has been active on the local and national political stage, built the group into a powerhouse, influencing policy while representing giants such as Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Twitter, Uber and Facebook. The group’s mission is “to empower the San Francisco tech community to have a voice in tech policy decisions and collaborate with government leaders on solving local issues.”

And that’s exactly what Stojkovic plans to do. With Conway retiring from the board chair position, she and two other prominent women in tech — Board Chair Rebecca Prozan (director of government affairs and public policy for Google’s West Coast region) and Vice Chair Kate O’Sullivan (general manager of digital diplomacy within Microsoft’s corporate, external and legal affairs department) — will lead sf.citi forward into an uncertain future. And frankly, they sound worried.

From left: Rebecca Prozan, Kate O’Sullivan and Jennifer Stojkovic are poised to lead sf.citi, a tech trade organization founded by venture capitalist Ron Conway, following Conway’s retirement from the board chair position. (Examiner photo stitch)

“San Francisco has not had the same level of recovery as cities like New York and Austin and Seattle and places like that,” Stojkovic told The Examiner. “One of the things that is very concerning, in our opinion, is that while we have a myriad of quality of life issues that we need to address to make sure that we are reopening our offices safely and reopening our downtown, that’s really a short – term solution. The long-term (question) for economic recovery is, ‘How do we remain the best place for folks to locate their business and to make sure that their talent is located in San Francisco?’”

Unfortunately, Stojkovic doesn’t hear anyone talking about this at City Hall.

“That, in my opinion, is the $14 billion question that we are not talking about at a city leadership level. We have been very, very fortunate to be a city that has been leading as the main capital of innovation in this country and in this world for several decades now. And we are now at a precipice where there’s potential for us to not have that same pull. … We need to make sure that we are, from a regulatory and tax perspective, continuing to be competitive. We’re the most expensive place to do business in the country.”

ugh Just when you thought you were full up on bad news, add this to the list. On my doomscrolling top 10, San Francisco’s tech center status ranks far behind Ukraine, inflation, fentanyl and homelessness. But it’s definitely on the list. We are a city based on technology and tourism, with a crucial convention economy that ties it all together. None of those engines are working at full capacity right now, so we need to pay attention when our tech leaders sound the alarm.

So what does Big Tech want San Francisco to do? You can read through sf.citi’s policy priorities, which map out some key areas one would expect from a business group. Favorable tax structure. Reasonable regulation. Eliminating bureaucracy. There’s also heavy emphasis on the pressing issues facing us all, including our lack of housing, aging transportation infrastructure, rampant homelessness and rising public safety concerns.

I would add one more to sf.citi’s list. Work with our largest tech employers to bring workers back to the office. And at the same time, embrace ideas forwarded in this column, and elsewhere, to repurpose space that will not be reclaimed by business. Empty offices? Make them into housing.

“I think the talk about repurposing the space downtown is one that a lot of folks are having right now. And I think that’s a realistic step and something we should be talking about,” said Stojkovic. “I also think that we have to do a good job of incentivizing people to want to be in San Francisco. At the end of the day, we keep coming back to the same thing. It’s very expensive to live in The City. So if we want folks to be coming downtown, and using the space more, we need folks to locate in San Francisco, which has not been on the forefront of housing development. California is not at the forefront of housing development.”

“(As for) transportation, a lot of our members are having concerns (about) their employees literally getting in and out of the city and getting to their offices. So we are advocating for better solutions from Muni and BART. That is important. Other perspectives? The state of the streets. Everybody says that. SF Travel is saying it, hospitals are saying it, every single association says the state of our streets has to change.”

For the record, sf.citi stands aligned with Mayor London Breed’s current plan to clean things up.

“We support the mayor’s initiatives, everything that she needs for public safety,” said Stojkovic. “But they’re not all tenable at the board level. We think that we need to be realistic about this. “

Conway and his organization have had some wins over the years, helping to make San Francisco startup-friendly while also advocating for improvements in local governance. For instance, this past year’s annual report shows they were heavily focused on mapping The City’s tech exodus and helping City Hall grapple with remote work, remote school and a remote population downtown.

Going forward, the organization’s new leadership wants to focus on keeping San Francisco relevant in the startup scene and helping to reenvision the city’s traditional downtown work spaces. From where I sit, this is core to our future success.

I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. The region was the Silicon Valley of the Industrial Age, booming beyond belief in the 1910s and 1920s. The post-war era was a time of prosperity as well. Just like San Francisco, the civic leaders believed the boom times would last indefinitely. But as the companies and factories started moving out, seeking cheaper labor elsewhere, a slow decline began that bottomed out during my childhood.

To Cleveland’s credit, the city has reinvented itself behind strong ties to biomedicine and life sciences, due in large part to institutions like the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University. But that took decades, and it’s still very much a work in progress. The key is to make sure you don’t hit bottom and have to build back from scratch.

trust me I’ve seen a downtown die. It’s not a pretty sight.

Editor’s note: The Arena, a column from The Examiner’s Al Saracevic, explores San Francisco’s playing field, from politics and technology to sports and culture. Send your tips, quips and quotes to asaracevic@sfexaminer.com.

An atmospheric river drenched the greater San Francisco Bay Area for three days, resulting in impressive rainfall.

A gauge on Mount Tamalpais recorded the most rainfall, at 11.37 inches, the National Weather Service said. Some of the highest peaks in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Mountains along the Big Sur coast received 9 to 10 inches of rain. Gauges in San Francisco measured between 3 and 4 inches.

Here’s a look at the Weather Service’s 72-hour precipitation totals and a map from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for locations in the Bay Area:

-Mount Tamalpais: 11.37 inches
-Ben Lomond Mountain: 10.06 inches
-Anderson Peak, Big Sur: 9.49 inches
-Boulder Creek: 9.32 inches
-Woodacre: 7.80 inches
-Santa Pink: 7.25 inches
– Saratoga: 7.21 inches
-Ross: 6.81 inches
-Cats: 5.95 inches
-The sling: 5.25 inches
-Orinda Fire Station: 4.98 inches
-Sunset District, San Francisco: 4.23 inches
-Oakland Hills: 4.78
-San Francisco International Airport: 4.03 inches
-Oakland: 3.95 inches
-Briones: 3.83 inches
-San Francisco, Embarcadero: 3.46 inches
-Travis Airforce Base: 3.40 inches
-Napa County Airport: 3.39 inches
-Novato: 2.46 inches
-Concord, Buchanan field: 2.43 inches
– Livermore Airport: 1.63 inches
– Mountain View, Moffett Field: 1.13 inches

The storm’s moisture hose was focused on the Central Coast Tuesday morning, but isolated showers and brief heavy rains remained in the Bay Area forecast. Cold air has entered the region, creating an unstable atmosphere and creating the opportunity for thunderstorms. Snow showers can also occur on the region’s highest peaks, such as Mount Diablo in the East Bay and Mount Hamilton in the South Bay.

Rain showers are expected to ease Tuesday night through Wednesday morning before a second weak and cold storm moves across the Bay Area Wednesday night through Thursday. This should bring another round of light to moderate rainfall to much of the region, with a possible 1 to 3 inches in coastal areas, 0.50 to 1 inch in the North Bay valleys and the Bay Area’s inner hills and 0.25 to 0.50 inch for most other areas.

Bouncing back from drama after drama, the Las Vegas Raiders — even after making the playoffs — are determined to come out with a clean slate.

In October, Jon Gruden resigned from his position as head coach after a series of offensive emails were released. And now the Raiders part ways with the general manager who set up the postseason qualifier:

pic.twitter.com/CnwaKywaCA

— Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) January 17, 2022

The Raiders compiled a 25-24 record in three years under Mayock’s leadership. In fact, Vegas has ended each of the last two seasons with a better record than the year before. It might not seem like much, but going from 7-9 to 8-8 and eventually going 10-7 with a playoff appearance isn’t too shabby. But it’s Las Vegas that doesn’t settle for “too shabby” in a city of endless entertainment options. Especially when “not too shabby” comes along with some high-profile touches.

Defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell was tied for fourth overall pick in 2019, but his playing time has fallen from 66 percent of defensive snaps as a rookie to just 24 percent in 2021. The Henry Ruggs II selection (legal issues due to fatal DUI crash) didn’t pan out. Cornerback Damon Arnette was cut after a video of him making death threats surfaced on his social media account. You may recall that Arnette was picked with one of the picks the Raiders were able to land in trading Khalil Mack. And rookie cornerback Nate Hobbs was arrested on DUI charges just hours after his team defeated the Colts late in the year. Even in their prime, the Raiders were a mess.

At the end of the day, we’re also talking about Mark Davis. The eccentric team owner who thrives on making splashy, headline-grabbing moves. Remember, Davis just made Becky Hammon the highest-paid coach in the WNBA, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. So that brings us to a trend none of us can ignore. Because after prying Gruden off the ESPN airwaves and pulling Mike Mayock away from his incredible job headlining NFL Network’s draft coverage, Davis is back in the market for a new coach and general manager.

In other words, the Chicago Bears now have *ANOTHER* team to compete with in their own search for new footballers at the top.

There was a lot of fuss about the Raiders and Jim Harbaugh. It would make sense for Vegas to take another big swing. And it’s reasonable for Harbaugh to return to where his coaching career began. Throw in his relationship with Davis, and the signs keep adding up. Harness that competitive edge and you’ll understand why a Harbaugh return to the pros isn’t a reach. And finally, think about how Harbaugh’s last NFL run ended. Things didn’t end on a high note. Harbaugh feuded with the 49ers. San Francisco was ready to kick him out the door. And the team fell apart in the immediate years after his departure. In all honesty, I wouldn’t call Harbaugh’s move to the Raiders another jab at his former employer. Especially since it is the former rival of the Raiders from the Bay Area.

And because there’s so much buzz surrounding Bears-Harbaugh, we’ll be keeping an eye on what’s happening in Vegas.

You know what they say: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, probably affects the bears in some way!

Catchy, isn’t it?

When the fog clears, the view across the bay from San Francisco’s secluded Mile Rock Beach is breathtaking. Boats pass under the bridge as the waves thunder against the protruding rock formations. Pelicans soar and sea lions frolic in the sand while the foghorn howls into the wide sky.

But between the small beach and the distant headlands, a confusing structure breaks through the horizon.

Today, Mile Rocks is a rusted helipad, for decades an iconic lighthouse for wedding cakes and, before that, the scene of a tragedy that claimed more than 100 lives.

—

The SS city of Rio de Janeiro arrived off the coast of San Francisco on February 21, 1901. The steamer mainly carried immigrants and cargo from China and Japan. On that day, 210 passengers and crew members were on board, who made their last leg to San Francisco after weeks at sea. As the fog cleared it was decided to anchor near the Cliff House and wait for the night.

The next morning the clouds appeared to be breaking up and Captain William Ward drew anchor and set sail for the dock. But the fog quickly closed again. At 5:30 a.m., while the passengers were asleep, the Rio’s hull was torn from the hidden rocks off the coast of Lands End.

Panic spread in the ship almost as quickly as the holds were flooded. Some survivors reported that a language barrier between the US officers and Chinese seafarers prevented lifeboats from leaving.

The SS city of Rio de Janeiro, built in 1878 by John Roach & Son in Chester, Pennsylvania, regularly carried passengers and cargo between Asia and San Francisco. Photo taken in Nagasaki, Japan, 1894.

Handing Out / Courtesy of San Francisco Maritime

In just eight minutes the ship was gone, its iron hull buckled on the seabed. The passengers, most of them immigrants only hours away from a new life in America, woke up trapped in their bunks. One hundred and twenty-eight didn’t come out alive. Some passengers fled their rooms and clung to floating wreckage in the cold water, and 82 lives were saved with the help of Italian fishermen hauling in their early morning catches nearby.

Captain Ward went down with the ship. His remains, identified by a watch chain containing a Chinese silver coin, were found on a Marin beach a year after the disaster.

Although the sinking of the Rio was one of dozen who met the same fate when they entered the Golden Gate, it was the most tragic and caused the greatest outrage in San Francisco. Captain Ward and Pilot Frederick Jordan, who survived, were both found guilty of gross negligence in choosing to drive through the fog that morning.

Treasure hunters flocked to Baker Beach and Lands End after rumors spread that the ship’s cargo contained gold and silver. This turned out to be wrong as only wreckage, tin and human remains washed ashore. The San Francisco Call accused the officers on watch at Fort Point of ignoring emergency whistles which they claim were never heard. The newspaper published extensive reports for days on the tragedy, which it described as “the horror of last Friday that shook the whole world”.

The San Francisco Examiner told “exciting rescue stories with crystal clear escapes” and published photos of the dead washed up on the quay.

Shortly after the disaster, Congress approved funding to build a lighthouse on Mile Rocks.

Building a three-story structure on one of the coast’s most treacherous and tiny rocks was no easy task, but five years later the construction of the three-tier cylindrical tower with balcony and lantern was completed.

“Built of concrete and steel, planned to use every inch of tooth and rock that protrudes from the bottom of the bay and to offer an impregnable front to the storms …” wrote the call.

The operation of the lighthouse was a four-man, full-time enterprise. A crew of four “Wickies” lived there for three weeks before returning to shore. Though just yards from San Francisco, the operation was so cut off that the government classified it as an “isolated station,” a designation usually reserved for outposts far away. The quarters were so close that the lighthouse was a designated “deer” station, which meant that women were not allowed to climb the ladder.

The Wickies spent their days and nights servicing the lights with 50,000 candles and the fog horn that activated when visibility fell below 5 miles. The waves and currents were so dangerous that mail and groceries could only be delivered via hoists from the weekly Navy ship that arrived from Fort Point. A 30-foot ladder connected to a board served as an entry point when the Wickies switched. The crew cooked a hot meal every day, and whoever took the last cup from the 4-gallon Eternal Coffee Pot had to make the next serving.

The upside of the job was that after 22 days on the rock, the guardsmen were allowed 8 days ashore in San Francisco, longer than any other post in the bay, but the work was arduous.

“It’s a constant cycle of scraping, guiding red, painting and scraping again,” one of the last guardsmen from Mile Rocks told the Examiner in 1963, lonely. “

“Sometimes the lights on the bank seem a bit distant, but you get used to them,” said another officer, Robert Schoener. “Every now and then the waves shake the tower and you wonder if you’re still here in the morning. But you always are. “

Keystone / Getty Images

The lighthouse was both dangerous and expensive, and inevitably in 1966, after 60 years of successful service with no more wrecks to be seen around the rocks, the station was inevitably automated via a submarine cable to Baker Beach. The upper two floors and the lantern room have been removed and replaced with a helipad to allow the Coast Guard to perform access and maintenance as they do today. The loss of the historic lighthouse was not welcomed by everyone, but the engineers sold the new station as “an unusual but aesthetically satisfactory structure”.

As for the SS city of Rio de Janeiro, despite countless explorers and divers who claimed to have found the wreck, it took 113 years to find the remains of the ship. In 2014, marine researchers found and identified San Francisco’s most famous shipwreck using a sonar-equipped submersible. The broken, sediment-covered hull was found half a mile offshore below Mile Rocks at a depth of 287 feet, the sunken remains of an eight-minute disaster over a century ago.

If you look out today, the rusted white structure fits nicely into the choppy horizon. Occasionally, Coast Guard helicopters still land on site, but most of the time, seagulls call the 50-foot-diameter platform home and stand in the ocean spray that was once tragedy.

The small beach with the best views of the structure is a few sandy steps from the Lands End Trail. In the 1950s, one guardsman remembered turning his light on in the lighthouse on lonely evenings to the same bay where his wife, who was walking her dog, waved back to say goodnight.

As we move into week 6 of the 2021 NFL season, many uncertainties remain. One uncertainty that is no longer in question, however, is who the top team in the NFL is. (At least IMO) With another exciting win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals – led by their defense – kept our top spot in this week’s power rankings. But what about the rest of the league?

As expected, the Miami Dolphins continue to crash after being run over by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. It was ugly, but not all of the weekend football was as challenging to watch as Miami. Many of this week’s games ended in one final possession, and I know many of us have watched our rival AFC East take his place at the top of the AFC with a win over Patrick Mahomes and the 2020 AFC champions, Kansas City, consolidated bosses.

It’s been a wild week, but not as wild as these power rankings are going to be.

For those who don’t know, the way we do power rankings on The Phinsider is a little different from other places on the internet. Instead of just taking last week’s leaderboards and moving teams that have gone up and teams that have lost, we start each week with a clean sheet of paper. Josh Houtz and Kevin Nogle then take turns in a draft-style leaderboard, answering the question, “Who will win the Super Bowl?” It can sometimes lead to dramatic changes in the rankings, but it can also keep a team on the pitch despite perhaps a poor performance over the past weekend.

This week Nogle is traveling so I’m (@Houtz) going to see Hans Solo! Go to the rankings:

TAYLORSVILLE, Plumas County (CBS SF) – Firefighters fighting the massive Dixie Fire that is burning in five northern California counties will use drones to drop fireballs from the sky to prevent flames from reaching the Taylorsville community.

On Monday, Jeff Surber, chief of operations for the East Zone, said Taylorville, which has seen flames approaching from three sides for the past few weeks, is currently threatened by a point fire from the Genesee Valley that has “slid” over a ridge and into sheer steep slopes , largely inaccessible avalanche terrain for crews and too dangerous to misfire.

CONTINUE READING: 4.1 Earthquake Rattles San Benito, Monterey Counties

“Instead of doing that, we built a bulldozer here over Taylorsville, expecting that over time [the wildfire] will move and it will align itself to a point where we are ready to burn [along the dozer line] to protect the Taylorsville community, ”said Surber.

Dixie Fire is slowly withdrawing near Taylorsville on August 28, 2021. (US Forest Service)

Surber said firefighters expect they will be able to deploy drones that can drop a line of fire over a path to create a firebreak.

“It’s a drone that drops so-called ‘ping pong balls,’ which are very small incendiary devices,” he said. “We plan to burn this at night in the coming days when we have access to this equipment, and when the time is right and the wind is right, we plan to burn this in a controlled manner to tie it down and protect Taylorsville . “

Until then, Surber says crews will continue to use helicopters to dump water along the fire site southwest of Taylorsville to keep the flames at bay.

“It wasn’t moving at the end of the shift last night,” said Surber. “It won’t go away. We assume that it will continue to be a problem area for us, but it is currently being kept in check. “

Other point fires have crossed the fire lines along Grizzly Ridge south, and the crews have bulldozed new emergency lines before additional point fires could arise that could threaten communities along Highway 70 such as Greenhorn, Sloat, and Cromberg. Additional emergency lines were built north of Lake Davis to protect homes.

In Butte County, the sheriff’s office on Monday was able to end the county evacuation warnings for the Jonesville, Butte Meadow, Lower Butte Meadows, Snag Lake and Lake Philbrook areas, among others.

By Monday morning, the Dixie Fire had burned 771,183 acres, more than 1,200 square miles in Butte, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama counties. It is the second largest forest fire in California history.

More than 1,200 buildings, including nearly 700 residential homes, have been destroyed since the fire started on July 14 over the Cresta Dam in the Feather River Canyon area of the Sierra-Cascades region. It is currently 48% included.

As with the Caldor fire further south, firefighters were closely monitoring the wildfire on Monday as a red flag warning is due to take effect. Gusts of wind and low relative humidity are expected for most of Tuesday night.

The Detroit Pistons could try to trade from # 1 in the upcoming NBA draft, said ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. (h / t CBS Sports.)

According to Givony, the Pistons may be trying to step out of the coveted # 1 slot and that the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder are potential candidates looking to raise the pecking order.

Houston and Cleveland are the most likely candidates as they are currently numbered 2 and 3. The Rockets also have a lot to offer in exchange for a trade-up, CBS points out, as they took control of the Brooklyn Nets’ first-round picks through 2027 as part of the James Harden deal in January.

But the final decision rests with Detroit, who could move the order down and potentially still draft the best prospect of their choosing – be it superstar point guard Cade Cunningham or someone else.

The 2021 NBA draft starts on Thursday, July 29th.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – A couple are recovering after being attacked outside their home in the Mission District on Saturday.

The police are investigating the attack that occurred in a parking lot.

The couple told KRON4 they didn’t even want the parking lot, they were just moving a car so someone could pull out of a driveway.

“It’s scary. They said they had guns,” Alicia Franzolini. “That they’re going to shoot us. It’s scary.”

Franzolini and her wife Claudia say they are scared and still shocked.

They were temporarily parked in their landlord’s driveway near 15th and Valencia streets.

He had stopped behind them but had to back away so the couple could leave. He was reversing into a vacant space behind him when another car tried to jump into the same space.

He got out to explain the situation to the driver when a woman interfered from across the street.

“When the neighbor comes out and Craig’s car drives off, she just slaps it with her hand,” said Franzolini.

Franzolini was still sitting in her car and watching this happen.

Fearing for the safety of her landlord, she got out of the car.

“She’s out on how super vicious,” said Franzolini. “She starts shouting profanity at me.”

Franzolini says she tried to explain that they didn’t want the parking lot – they just had to drive back and their landlord would drive back in.

The woman started calling out her name and bringing up her sexuality.

Franzolini’s wife Claudia got out to protect her.

“The lady’s daughter comes out of nowhere and then tries to attack Claudia,” said Franzolini.

After the argument ended, the woman got back in her car and the landlord got into his. But the two suspects came back.

“They came and finished him off,” said Franzolini. “And we were in our vehicle trying to stay safe, but the window had a tiny crack and she splashed in there.”

Franzolini managed to take two photos.

She called the San Francisco Police Department and they interviewed the victims and witnesses.

They say they are investigating the attack.

“I am in great pain,” said Franzolini. “My neck is dislocated, my wife was scratched and injured, and my 75-year-old landlord, who has a pacemaker, was attacked.”

Both women stayed home from work today.

One was wearing her uniform and said she was afraid the suspects might target her at work.

The landlord is still working on video of the incident for the police and said once the police got it they would make it public.
