The Hawaiian-born, James Beard Award-nominated chef will continue to bring his unique flair to the Centurion Lounge at SFO with dishes inspired by his lineage and family memories including, Kochujang marinated chicken thighs, wild rice and coconut soup, and black vinegar and Honey glazed baby carrots.

Consumers appreciate premium dining options when traveling through airport lounges. A recent Amex Trendex* survey found that a majority of respondents (64%) said that premium food and beverage offerings are their favorite parts of airport lounges.

The lounge will showcase two custom floor-to-ceiling wallcoverings by abstract artist Tracie Cheng, and new interior design that takes cues from the local vineyards, landscape, and the iconic San Francisco fog to give guests a sense of relaxation.

UNPARALLELED ACCESS

With more lounge options than any other credit card issuer on the market and the only credit card issuer with a proprietary lounge at SFO, the American Express Global Lounge Collection is just one of the many ways American Express supports Card Members through their travels. American Express continues to enhance the Centurion Lounge network through new locations and expanding existing lounges. American Express has announced plans to open new lounge locations at the Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, DC and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport (ATL) in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

The question, as presented in a Reddit Ask Me Anything forum, seemed simple. Innocuous, even. Actor Nicolas Cage was answering questions from Reddit users during a press junket for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Along with the typical movie and acting queries came this nonsequitur: “What’s your favorite pasta shape?”

“I once went to an Italian restaurant in San Francisco about 25 years ago with Charlie Sheen because they had square tube pasta and he was very interested in trying square tube pasta and we did and we loved it so much we went back the next day to try it again,” Cage replied.

For media covering the AMA, Cage’s answer was just a kooky one-off. But for the food-obsessed and San Francisco locals, the answer set off a fun, low-stakes round of internet sleuthing. It presented a two-part mystery: What pasta shape is a “square tube”? And what San Francisco restaurant serves, or served, a dish the actors loved so much they ate it twice in two days?

If you’re looking for the tl;dr, here it is:

the pasta Paccheri.

the place Cafe Tiramisu on Belden Place, circa 1997-ish.

If you’re interested in the long version, however, it’s a fun one. Attempting to figure out the restaurant became a trip back in time for San Francisco locals, who tried to recall restaurants from that era. It also posed a pre-internet mystery, something not easily solved by a quick Google search. Marcia Gagliardi, the food columnist known as Tablehopper, has been covering the local food scene for 16 years. But when presented with the quote, she was at a loss. “It’s absolutely bizarre!” she wrote. “How funny and weird. Nothing is ringing a bell…I’m wondering if they were calamarata?”

The next option was to take the question to Twitter. The guesses came pouring in fast, a who’s-who of late ’90s restaurants: Rose Pistola, Tosca, Rubicon, Aqua, Original Joe’s, Scala’s, Mona Lisa, Buca Giovanni, Tommaso’s, Caffè Macaroni. Former Eater SF and San Francisco Chronicle editor Paolo Lucchesi solicited answers from friends and local chefs on Instagram. Along with the above restaurants, more theories were floated, in a virtual trip down memory lane: Ciao, Globe, Prego, Blue Fox, and Postrio were named. An internet sleuth shared an interview article, which detailed a flight Cage and Sheen took together to San Francisco, to further seal the likelihood of the story. As for pasta shapes, those guesses came in abundance, too: chitarra, mezze maniche, tonnarelli, paccheri, garganelli, and, yep, ravioli.

San Francisco, I need your help. In a recent AMA, Nicolas Cage was asked what his favorite pasta shape is, and not only is his favorite a square tube pasta, but it is something he was served in a local restaurant c. 1997: pic.twitter.com/cE2PiZ07La

— Dianne de Guzman (@diannedeguzman) April 18, 2022

Rose Pistola was a top guess, seeing as how it was a modern, buzzy Italian restaurant at the time, but owner Laurie Thomas, reached via email, didn’t have any answers either. Thomas didn’t have all of the restaurant menus to search through, she told Eater SF, and a look through the Rose Pistola cookbook for a garganelli dish (her guess on the pasta) turned up nothing. Another dead end.

Rubicon was another restaurant name mentioned, but this time with a Cage connection: Francis Ford Coppola, famously known for directing The Godfather among a legion of other movies, is also Cage’s uncle and an investor in the now-shuttered, but well-remembered, restaurant. Stuart Brioza, who now runs State Bird Provisions, once worked at Rubicon but picked up the chef helm around 2004. He did confirm he was never handed down any square tube pasta dish from chefs before him. Still, he was game to throw out some potential restaurant names. “The question is, is this a classic dish? Or is this kind of an interpreted [dish and] somebody came up with some phenomenal find,” Brioza mused. “And if that’s the case, I mean, you have restaurants like Cypress Club at the time. I’m trying to think of the more modern California cooking that was happening.”

Looking for an injection of more restaurants to contact, I reached out to the prolific Facebook group, San Francisco Remembered. Within a few minutes, group member Mark Kohtz confidently replied: “Cafe Tiramisu. You’re welcome. I actually saw him there twice.” Intrigued by the confidence, a quick search revealed that to this day the restaurant serves a “square spaghetti carbonara” and opened in 1992.

Co-owners Pino Spinoso and Giuseppe Scoppetto were both present and eager to take a call Tuesday afternoon. When asked if Nicolas Cage ever visited Cafe Tiramisu, Spinoso said yes, and mentioned Cage also visited his other restaurant, Little City, then stopped — “He’s the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, right?” Indeed. “I’m from the same town of his uncle’s, you know, Francis’s parents in Basilicata [Italy],” Pino shared. “When Francis used to come to one of my restaurants before, he used to take Nicolas when he was young and Francis came to this restaurant a couple of times.”

When asked what the “square tube pasta” dish could have been, Spinoso began describing a ravioli dish—then presented a different answer. “The other one was called paccheri,” Spinoso said. “It was pasta [dish] with an oxtail ragu. They are the size of a half candle, and then when you cook it, they get flat a little bit. Almost like a rigatoni, but wider, larger.”

Last, but not least, did Francis’s nephew ever show up with Charlie Sheen? Yes, confirmed both Spinoso and Scopetto. “It was when Sharon Stone used to live right across the street from Tiramisu,” Spinoso said, naming the building. “Sharon was a good customer of Cafe Tiramisu, at the time she was married to Phil Bronstein.”

The checkable parts of Spinosa and Scopetto’s story do fit the timeline: Spinosa mentioned Basilicata, and Coppola’s grandparents (not parents) are noted as being from that region. Stone was married to Bronstein from 1998 to 2004. That was enough for me, case solved. But hey, Nicolas, if this story ever reaches you and you want to confirm or deny, reach out. I’d love to chat.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco Mayor London Breed recently traveled to Europe to pitch San Francisco to tourists. But the trip didn’t sit well with a group of Bay Area mothers, who have responded with a different pitch to potential visitors: just stay home.

The group, called “Moms Against Drug Deaths,” spent $25,000 on a new billboard in Union Square that reads: “Famous for the world over for our brains, beauty and now dirt-cheap fentanyl.”

“It’s cheeky. We hope it gets attention,” Gina McDonald, one of the group members, told ABC7 News.

“Moms Against Drug Deaths” is made up of a small group of women with children who have either died from — or are addicted to — fentanyl. They hope their campaign brings awareness to the city’s open-air drug market.

COMING SOON TO SAN FRANCISCO: This billboard calling out the city’s drug crisis

“Famous the world over for our brains, beauty and, now, dirt-cheap fentanyl.”

The group “Mothers Against Drug Deaths” is behind the campaign. The billboard will be up starting Monday in Union Square pic.twitter.com/C0cxhiURoc

— Liz Kreutz (@ABCLiz) April 2, 2022

The lead organizer is Jacqui Berlinn, whose son is currently an addict living on the streets of San Francisco. She said their group launched the campaign after Mayor Breed’s decision to end the state of emergency in the Tenderloin, followed by the mayor’s recent trip to Europe where she pitched San Francisco as a safe, enjoyable place for tourists.

RELATED: SF Mayor London Breed heads to Europe to court international visitors back to Bay Area

“And we’re like, wait a minute, it’s not changed. We should still be in a state of emergency,” Berlinn said. “And then she went to Europe and said, ‘Come to San Francisco. It’s fine.’ Um, no, it’s not fine. It’s really not.”

Here is the “Moms Against Drug Deaths” billboard, now up in Union Square. Member Jacqui Berlin says they hope their message reaches Mayor @LondonBreed. She says they’re considering putting some up in European airports if they don’t see real change soon. pic.twitter.com/GCR9ohPkPu

— Liz Kreutz (@ABCLiz) April 4, 2022

McDonald said the group took the mayor’s pitch as a “slap in the face” and they ultimately decided the billboard was the answer.

The group said they used their own savings and donations to pay for the $25,000 ad campaign.

Several San Francisco tourism and business associations, including the San Francisco Travel Association, The Hotel Council of San Francisco, the Union Square Alliance & The Golden Gate Restaurant Association, released a joint statement denouncing the campaign.

“The passionate campaign being launched today by MADD, although impactful, is not the solution as it will only hurt local small businesses and our hospitality workers who just now are beginning to crawl out of the economic disaster caused by COVID and its continuing fallout,” the statement said.

VIDEO: Father recounts what it’s like to raise a child surrounded by drug dealing and crime in SF’s Tenderloin

Joe D’Alessandro, the CEO of the San Francisco Travel Association, said they agree the city needs to address the drug crisis but believes a campaign putting down San Francisco is not the answer.

“They’re asking people to stop coming to San Francisco right now,” he said, “So that hurts people tomorrow.”

Many of the San Francisco tourism/business associations have come together to respond to the billboard going up in Union Square calling out the city’s drug crisis.

— Liz Kreutz (@ABCLiz) April 4, 2022

A spokesperson for Mayor Breed argued the city is working to crack down on drug use.

” The Mayor agrees that we need to break up open-air drug dealing in San Francisco. Police officers are making arrests every day, and in the last few weeks an additional 20 officers have been added to the Tenderloin neighborhood to support our emergency response initiative ,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The Police have seized over 10 kilos of fentanyl in the Tenderloin area this year alone, which is roughly four times more than was seized over the same time period last year.”

“We know more needs to be done to make more arrests, but there also needs to be accountability for the people who are dealing drugs, committing acts of violence, and making our communities less safe. We also need to increase access to services and treatment ,” the statement continued. “We’ve hired over 200 new behavioral health workers, opened the Tenderloin Linkage Center to provide people who are suffering with issues relating to mental health and addiction with the help they need, and are in the process of adding hundreds of mental health and substance use beds.”

.@LondonBreed’s office just released this statement responding to the Moms Against Drug Deaths billboard.

It says Breed agrees open-air drug dealing needs to end & says this year police have seized 4x the amount of fentanyl in the Tenderloin compared to the same period last year pic.twitter.com/2WBkfrws1J

— Liz Kreutz (@ABCLiz) April 4, 2022

Moms Against Drug Deaths, however, said they are not seeing enough change. They felt their recent protest about drug use at the newly opened Linkage Center fell on deaf ears and that they needed to do more to get the city’s attention.

If you’re on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

Berlinn said if they don’t see change and progress soon, they may expand their campaign internationally. She said they may place these billboards in European airports to warn people about San Francisco.

“I know it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s not a fast fix,” she said. “But we need to start moving that direction.”

Majestically on the corner of Alta Plaza Park, 2500 Steiner is rising again famous. Therein, Unit No. 6 sold for $ 15.5 million that November, making the 3,500 square foot unit $ 4,428 per square foot. That price per square foot is the highest SF ever had for a cooperative, according to MLS data. The previous record was held by a cooperative on 1 Steuart Lane at $ 4,012 per square foot.

Since 2500 Steiner is on a ridge at approximately 285 feet, it is a recognizable sight in the San Francisco skyline. “The height and lack of tall buildings nearby make it one of the most visible buildings in San Francisco,” wrote Bay Area Architects.

It was built in the 1920s by Conrad Alfred Meussdorffer, who also designed the St. Regis apartments in Lafayette Park (whose beaux-arts beauty catapulted Meussdorffer’s career into the city’s elite) and Washington Street in 2006.

A cooperative is a special type of property. In contrast to a condominium, in which the owner owns both the unit and a joint stake in the property, in a cooperative the owner does not technically own the property at all. These sales can be complex as prospective buyers must seek approval from a cooperative committee and buyers face significant HOA fees. Financing can also be tricky: some lenders won’t offer credit union loans if there are rules in place that restrict how or to whom you can sell your shares.

But none of that mattered to this apartment, which was being sold at its record-breaking price.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – Union Square in San Francisco is losing another major retailer, with DSW – the Designer Shoe Warehouse – being the newest store in the neighborhood to shut down for good.

“Things I used to know aren’t here anymore,” said Linda Hill, who was visiting from New Jersey.

“It’s a lot sadder than it was before COVID,” said Judy Keith, a visitor from Texas.

Marisa Rodriguez, the new executive director of the Union Square Alliance – formerly known as the Union Square Business Improvement District – hopes to change that perception.

“It’s always disappointing when a cornerstone of our community has to be closed. As far as I know, they are closing more than just their location here in San Francisco, ”said Rodriguez.

She agrees that there is a problem with the image of Union Square that she attributes primarily to the pandemic and the toll it has taken on tourism and retail. It is Rodriguez’s goal to address the image problem.

“That perception will soon go away,” she said. “Union Square is ready and waiting for visitors. We have so much to offer. “

The holiday season has already begun with the return of the traditional Christmas tree and ice rink to Union Square.

“It will be lit on November 18th,” she said. “People love the ice rink. In contrast to last year, when everything was closed, it is open. “

She also noted that some companies are moving in while others are moving in.

Omega, the watch store, has just opened in Union Square, one of nine upcoming openings and reopenings, according to Rodriguez.

“These range from restaurants, wine bars, retail stores – we even have a mattress store,” she said. “We are very excited about all of this.”

Perception won’t change overnight. But Rodriguez believes it will continue to move in the right direction when people venture back into the world and relive Union Square.

MORE NEWS: Opening of a large charging station for electric cars in the Valley Fair Mall

“I think you will come here and be amazed at how activated, how beautiful and how clean and safe it is,” she said.

The DSW on Union Square in San Francisco closes its doors after nine years.

A green “closed” sign now adorns the store at 400 Post Street and customers could only pick up orders there, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
While DSW hasn’t said why the four-story store closed, it’s more than likely the latest fallout from the pandemic.

The company’s parent company, Designer Brands, said in March it could close about 65 stores in the US over the next four years, including 24 in 2021. The stores that are closing have not been identified. An official said the leases would expire shortly.

“As retail traffic is still restricted and consumers continue to choose to shop digitally and forego in-store visits, we are carefully evaluating our existing store infrastructure,” said Jared Poff, Chief Financial Officer of Designer Brands, at the time.

Several retailers closed locations in downtown San Francisco during the pandemic. Including: Gap, H&M, Marshalls and Uniqlo. In addition, Walgreens announced last month it would close five stores for excessive shoplifting. Nordstrom Rack closed its 555 Ninth Street store in October, resulting in 41 layoffs.

Some traders are moving to the area. The jewelry company Brilliant Earth rented offices at 300 Grant Avenue and joined the outdoor clothing retailer Arc’teryx. The Swiss watch manufacturer Omega also recently opened a store on 103 Geary Street.

“We have several leases in the works,” Cushman & Wakefield broker Kazuko Morgan told The Chronicle. “As long as the current climate lasts, we feel very good for 2022.”

An end to the pandemic travel bans can also strengthen local real estate. The JPMorgan Health Care Conference returns to town in January.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Digital payments company Square Inc. says it has agreed to acquire Afterpay, which gives merchants a “buy now, pay later” option in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $ 29 billion offers.

Square said Sunday it had agreed to buy all of the shares in the Australian company and that the estimated value of the transaction was based on the closing price of Square’s common shares last Friday.

Square enables retailers to process credit card transactions with devices that plug into tablets or smartphones. The San Francisco-based company said the acquisition is expected to close in early 2022.

The company plans to integrate Afterpay into its services so that merchants can offer their customers the option of paying for goods later without a credit card. Afterpay users could manage their installment payments right in Square’s Cash app.

“Square and Afterpay have a common purpose,” Square CEO Jack Dorsey said in a statement.

CONTINUE READING: Wildfire breaks out on Bradford Island in the early morning; At least 2 houses damaged, residents forced to evacuate

About 70 million people use Square’s Cash app. As of June 30, Afterpay served more than 16 million users and nearly 100,000 merchants, including large retailers, the company said.

Installment payments are popular with retailers as they encourage customers to spend more money. And they allow customers who do not have sufficient credit or credit at the time of purchase to leave a store with the item they want. Payments are made in multiple installments without interest over time – unless customers are late, in which case additional fees or interest may apply.

“Afterpay is deeply committed to helping people spend money responsibly without incurring service fees for those who pay on time,” said a joint press release announcing the deal.
