A recent Oakland A’s home game against the Tampa Bay Rays drew 2,488 to the Oakland Coliseum, an aging ballpark that can hold more than 47,000. A’s attendance had not reached that low a level in 40 years.

Going to an A’s game these days might seem kind of sad, with so many empty seats. But there are perks, like being able to hear the balls-and-strikes calls of the umpires. At the A’s-Rays game on May 2, you could clearly make out the taunts from the sparse crowd.

If a quieter baseball experience is what you want, the Coliseum in 2022 is the place to be. But you might want to avoid sitting in right field, home to the cheering section of the Oakland 68s, whose members bang out beats on drums and cowbells.

“It’s kind of my social community,” said Esperanza Uruena, an Oakland 68er, one of about 20 in the bleachers.

Jorge Leon, president of the Oakland 68s, said, “We have different drumbeats for all the different A’s players. But we had to create new ones.”

That’s because the A’s traded away All-Stars and fan favorites who helped the team make the playoffs just two years ago.

Leon, 37, comes to just about every game. He said it’s not just the roster tear-down that’s driving attendance to such absurd lows. A’s fans are used to that, the whole moneyball thing. It’s the A’s trading all their good players, then raising ticket prices, all while threatening to leave Oakland. It feels like they don’t want the fans there.

“The last day that we could renew our season tickets, we are like, ‘OK, are we going to do this or not?” Leon said. “Part of our mindset was like, Fisher is doing this on purpose, so no one comes, right?”

“Fisher” is John Fisher, the billionaire owner of the A’s.

A’s President Dave Kaval swears the team is not trying to keep fans away.

“We don’t need to do that to relocate,” Kaval said. “That might have been true before the league gave us authorization on Las Vegas. And then it would have been a totally sensitive plan, maybe.”

Major League Baseball gave the A’s the OK to flirt with Vegas, partly to pressure the city of Oakland into helping them build a new ballpark, something more fan-friendly and less feline-friendly.

“I see the feral cats almost every day,” Kaval said. “I see the cats, I see the kittens, I see calico cats, I see tortoiseshell cats.”

Beyond the roaming colony of feral cats that’s captured media attention, the 66-year-old Coliseum has had sewage problems and lighting issues, and it used to have vermin problems — maybe before the cats showed up.

The A’s want a $12 billion waterfront ballpark development, complete with hotels, restaurants and housing. The city wouldn’t help finance the stadium directly from current tax revenue but would redirect taxes generated by the project itself into the surrounding infrastructure.

Opponents of the project say it’ll interfere with the Oakland port, make gentrification worse and steal attention from more pressing issues facing the city, like homelessness.

Kaval says if the A’s don’t get this stadium, they’ll have to find a home somewhere else. It’s not a new threat.

Leon has the memorabilia to prove it. Alongside A’s jerseys and newspaper clippings he preserves in a shed behind his home, Leon keeps an aging banner that fans used to hang at the Coliseum. “So we have one of the classic ones. It’s a ‘Keep our A’s in Oakland’ banner. I want to say from 1998, 1999.”

The city has changed a lot since then. It’s richer, more expensive, more gentrified. The always misleading caricature of Oakland as poster child for urban decay is laughably inaccurate in 2022 — the median home value is over $1 million.

But ironically, even as the city grows more prosperous, its sports teams are abandoning it. The NFL’s Raiders left for Las Vegas. The NBA’s Warriors left for San Francisco. The A’s are all that’s left among major pro sports teams.

Leon wants the new, fancy stadium. It’s the only way the A’s stick around. But he’ll miss the Coliseum, warts and all. He grew up not so far from it and met his wife at an A’s game.

“Playing baseball and hanging out with your friends and your crew. That’s why to me it’s the most beautiful place. I don’t need the fancy stuff that goes on in ballparks,” he said.

While other A’s fans stay home to send a message to the ownership, Leon still shows up. After some reflection, he doesn’t actually think the front office is trying to keep attendance low. He just thinks they’ve been arrogant.

At the May 2 game, which the A’s ultimately lost to the Rays, 9-year-old Harrison Stone was having a great time, enjoying those simpler things. He managed to walk away with some souvenirs: four baseballs.

“Probably because there’s, like, no one here,” he said.

He grabbed two foul balls, and two were thrown to him by an outfielder with limited options.

Harrison is an A’s fan. But he’s not local.

“We’re from Las Vegas,” he said.

It’s harder to get foul balls at Aviators games — they’re the A’s minor league team in Vegas. This year, some Aviators games draw more fans than the A’s do.

Customers at San Francisco’s Oracle Park will have enhanced access to concessions products.

The San Francisco Giants Major League Baseball team is deploying the Oracle Micros Simphony Cloud POS solution at its home stadium. The Giants intend to leverage the new POS technology to make it easier for customers to order food and beverage options at concession stands or from their mobile devices, while built-in restaurant business analytics and real-time data access will help Oracle Park improve inventory management .

The venue will leverage Simphony to obtain real-time insights into what is happening across inventory, pricing, and promotions. For example, if a popular promotion leads to an out-of-stock item, it will automatically be reflected on the park’s digital menu boards and mobile devices. Conversely, ballpark staff will also be able to see if there is a surplus of a certain food, with the option to run a new promotion to accelerate sales.

As part of this rollout, the team also moved its disaster recovery system for high-priority data, files and video to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Stadiums go frictionless
In future seasons, Oracle Park will implement self-service customer kiosks and “grab-and-go” frictionless checkout locations. Frictionless shopping is becoming an increasingly popular offering at professional sports venues across the country. For example, Aramark, the exclusive food and beverage provider at Houston’s NRG Stadium, recently opened the venue’s second store featuring Zippin checkout-free technology. Two Ice House Express locations in two different first-level sections of the stadium enable shoppers to tap a credit card to enter a store and then select the items they want.

Amazon, a pioneer of autonomous shopping with its Amazon Go store model in January 2018, offers its leading-edge contactless shopping and payment options at the recently opened Climate Pledge Area in Seattle. Frictionless shopping options at select food and beverage stores within the arena include Just Walk Out, as well as Amazon One palm-based payment.

And the Worcester Red Sox minor league baseball team recently partnered with retail computer vision platform provider Standard AI to retrofit the “WooSox” market store located near center field in its Polar Park stadium in Worcester, Mass. The store leverages artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras and the cloud to provide a fully autonomous shopping experience.

“From the delicious Crazy Crab Sandwich to our signature Gilroy Garlic Fries, Oracle Park is well-known for its world-class food and beverage program,” said Bill Schlough, senior VP and CIO, San Francisco Giants. “Oracle will help us make it faster and easier than ever for fans to enjoy our unique offerings while boosting our operational efficiency, better managing inventory, and reducing costs.”

“Maintaining agility in the face of tumultuous market conditions and ever-evolving fan expectations is essential for ballpark operators,” said Simon de Montfort Walker, senior VP and GM, Oracle Food and Beverage. “Oracle’s transaction platform, Micros Simphony Cloud, helps venues serve fans faster, arms staff with intuitive tech, and automates business operations. With it, Oracle Park can help ensure its fan experience and business performance continues to be one of Major League Baseball’s best. “

By Casey Harrison (contact)

Wednesday, March 16, 2022 | 4:34pm

A subcommittee for a cross-jurisdictional body that governs the San Francisco Bay voted today against removing port authority protections for a proposed site for a multibillion-dollar commercial district that includes a proposed waterfront stadium for the Oakland Athletics, a setback that could help the baseball team ultimately relocate to Las Vegas.

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s Seaport Planning Advisory Committee voted 6-3 against removing port priority use at the proposed Howard Terminal site, which would transfer maritime use of the site from the port authority to proposed $12 billion development which would also include a 35,000-seat waterfront ballpark for the A’s.

The commission, however, will hold a final vote on the matter June 2, likely determining the fate of the project. A’s President Dave Kaval said the development can’t move forward without approval.

“It’s very disappointing that an unelected body would choose a parking lot over a privately-financed ballpark and development including housing, which is sorely needed in the Bay Area,” Kaval said. “But that’s exactly what they did. And those are some of the challenges of doing business in California in the Bay Area.”

“The site has to be removed from the sea port plan for the project to move forward. And their recommendation was don’t allow a ballpark and the development to be built there (sic).”

Justin Berton, a spokesman for Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement the mayor agrees with the subcommittee’s decision.

“We believe the Port of Oakland and its leadership knows its best capacity, and we agree with their detailed analysis that shows they can continue to thrive and grow port activities well into the future, as well as support a transformational, world-class development that will open 18 acres of public parks along the waterfront and create more affordable housing and thousands of great union jobs for the region” the statement said.

The A’s remain on what Kaval is calling a “parallel path” in negotiating with partners in both Oakland and the Las Vegas valley to build a new stadium to replace the outdated RingCenter Coliseum. The team has played there since 1968, and it is considered by many to be among the worst stadiums in the big leagues.

Kaval said the organization within the last week have submitted another offer to purchase a site for a similarly-sized stadium here in Las Vegas. He did not specify where, stating only the bid was made to a private entity.

Kaval, however, did hint that should the team move to the valley, it is “focused like a laser beam” on building a stadium along the resort corridor, and that the team has made several offers at various sites.

“We have these handful of sites in and around the resort corridor, and we’re working very diligently both with resort operators/casinos as well as landowners to kind of get to a final site,” Kaval said. “We think that provides the best balance for locals and tourists, and that’s going to be critically important.”

Kaval said the nature of talks in both Oakland and Las Vegas are “moving quickly” and that he hopes to announce the location of a new ballpark sometime this summer.

“(We’re) hopeful that we can get to the point where the different parties would be comfortable, maybe even announcing it,” Kaval said. “I think that’d be a big moment to announce the site and show people what the vision of that is.”

Major League Baseball in May gave the A’s the green light to seek a new home and permission to speak with entities in other cities about possible relocation after deeming the Coliseum unfit to play. The team’s lease with the stadium expires in 2024, while Kaval and other team executives have made several trips to Las Vegas since.

On Feb. 17, Oakland City Council voted 7-2 to certify the environmental impact report for the Howard Terminal plan, at the time clearing a key hurdle for the city to keep the team in the Bay Area. Kaval said at the time the vote was a “necessary step” to continue negotiations, while also working on securing a spot in Southern Nevada.

The A’s have narrowed down a list of “about three or four” stadium sites in Las Vegas, Kaval said in February. Media reports in December indicated the A’s submitted a bid to build a stadium at the site of the Tropicana hotel, which is owned by Bally’s Corp.

“All of that is happening at a deliberate pace, a pace that balances the need to make progress with the importance of being thoughtful and smart,” Kaval said.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — City councilmembers may take a crucial vote Thursday afternoon that will move the city closer or further away from an agreement with the Oakland A’s for a new stadium in the city.

Councilmembers will vote on whether to certify the final environmental impact report, a necessary step toward a new ballpark. The A’s are also considering building a ballpark in Las Vegas and moving the team there.

READ MORE: Injured Oakland Firefighter Remains Hospitalized; 2 Others Released

The $12 billion proposed project in Oakland includes a stadium seating about 35,000 people, up to 3,000 housing units nearby, a hotel with about 400 rooms, about 1.8 million square feet of commercial space, an arts venue for about 3,500 people and about 18 acres of land parks.

The development will sit on about 55 acres at Howard Terminal on Port of Oakland property bordering the Oakland-Alameda Estuary.

“A certified EIR will set the floor for the remaining negotiations, including robust community benefits and a development agreement that ensures that all Oaklanders benefit from this once-in-a-generation development,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said.

City council members will act on three items Thursday. Councilmembers will consider a resolution surrounding the project’s community benefits and compatibility with freight operations nearby.

Then the council will consider whether to certify the final EIR and whether to approve a jurisdictional ordinance describing what the city and what the Port of Oakland will do concerning the project.

Oakland A’s president Dave Kaval said the A’s are hoping the City Council certifies the EIR.

“It’s a big deal,” Kaval said. “Years of work have gone into this.”

Community benefits may include the construction of affordable housing as part of the project, which has been an important issue for city officials, as well as anti-displacement support and traffic congestion mitigation. The project is close to downtown and Chinatown.

Benefits may also include environmental and air quality protections. Kaval has previously said the project will result in cleaner air in West Oakland, the neighborhood nearest to the proposed project and one that has suffered from air pollution from freeways and the Port of Oakland.

Many of the goods traveling through the port go by rail, making it important that the project is compatible with freight operations. Not only will a bicycle and pedestrian bridge be built to accommodate travel over the nearby railroad tracks, but a bridge for vehicles is also planned, assuming the project is built.

READ MORE: San Francisco Mayor Lays Out Timeline For New School Board Members Following Recall Vote

The vote to certify the final EIR requires councilmembers to agree that the report complies with the California Environmental Quality Act, that the impacts of the project have been analyzed and mitigations have been identified and imposed and that the benefits of the project exceed adverse impacts that cannot be mitigated feasibly.

Oakland cannot enter into any binding agreements with the A’s for a new ballpark until councilmembers certify the final EIR.

The City Council will not be considering the construction of a gondola that had been proposed to take people to games at the ballpark. Council members will also not be voting on a development agreement, also known as a binding financial agreement, for the project, and the final binding agreement necessary for the project.

Assuming the City Council approves the jurisdictional ordinance, the city will then take responsibility for Howard Terminal, which is currently on Port property.

The City Council could fail to vote Thursday, moving the vote to March. City officials do not see that as a major stumbling block to getting the project done.

Following the vote on the final EIR, all the remaining approvals come forward together including a general plan amendment and among other things, the development agreement. Summer is the soonest for those approvals, according to the city.

Kaval said the team continues to pursue sites in southern Nevada.

“We remain on parallel paths,” he said, in Oakland and in Nevada until the team gets a new home.

He said the team is “driving forward with great haste” toward that home. The A’s lease at its current home at the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024.

“We’re desperately running out of time,” Kaval said.

The City Council meeting starts at 3:30 pm and the public can watch at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85184082009.

OAKLAND (BCN) – Following a recommendation by the Oakland Planning Commission Wednesday night, the city council will consider whether to certify an environmental report for a new Oakland A ballpark in the city.

The city council will likely consider certifying the final environmental impact report at a meeting in February, city officials said.

CONTINUE READING: Vigil for Saturday in Santa Rosa to raise awareness of search for missing mother

The Planning Commission’s recommendation is just another step toward the city’s final approval or rejection of the Waterfront project.

“(The) recommendation from the planning commission that the final environmental impact report be sent to the City Council for certification is a major win for our entire region and brings Oakland one step closer to building a pioneering waterfront ballpark neighborhood with the highest environmental standards,” said Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement Wednesday night.

“For this EIR, our city has provided an extended public comment and review period and has responded in writing to more than 400 comments,” Schaaf added.

“A new waterfront neighborhood will provide a long-term home for our beloved Oakland A’s, 18 acres of beautifully landscaped public parks, 3,000 units with much-needed market price and affordable housing, and more than 25,000 union buildings and 7,000 permanent jobs will bring to our area,” Schaaf said.

Not everyone is as excited as the mayor.

“We’re disappointed,” said leaders of the East Oakland Stadium Alliance, a coalition of groups working to keep the Oakland A’s in East Oakland. “The lack of thorough analysis and inadequate response to public comments from the City of Oakland and the A’s has resulted in a planning commission recommendation that continues to put our community and the port at risk.”

EOSA executives said: “The final EIR does not address significant concerns related to traffic, air quality and pollution remediation, among others, at the proposed baseball field site at Howard Terminal.

CONTINUE READING: Warriors, Chase Center to require fans to provide proof of COVID booster shots

“Given the serious flaws in this document, we hope that the City Council will examine the report with greater care, recognize its obligation to protect our community from harmful development and vote no to certify the EIR,” said EOSA leaders.

But the commissioners have been very supportive of the EIR, Oakland A’s president Dave Kaval said in an interview Thursday, even as the A’s consider moving the team to Las Vegas.

The commissioners commented on the report’s “quality, prudence and robustness,” and two said it was the best EIR they had read, Kaval said.

Regarding baseball, Kaval called the planning commission’s recommendation “probably a solid single” for Oakland. He added that it’s important to keep runners moving.

Oakland needs to take more steps to keep the A in town. A number of documents need to be prepared by the city and sent back to the A’s, Kaval said, stressing that there is now a lot of work for the city court to do.

The A’s are still putting a lot of effort into the possibility of moving the team to Las Vegas. A study found Las Vegas to be a viable market for the A’s, Kaval said.

The next step is deciding on a Las Vegas location for the team, he said, and the A’s now have a handful to choose from.

The chair of Oakland’s planning commission did not respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.

Two California-based trucking associations continue to oppose plans to build a major league ballpark for the Oakland Athletics in the Port of Oakland at the Howard Terminal.

Major League Baseball recently turned up the heat and authorized the team to begin talks with other cities about a possible move once the lease for the current stadium, the RingCentral Coliseum, expires in 2024.

The truck associations said they had no objection to the American League Club building a new park – the Coliseum is the MLB’s fifth oldest stadium – but opposed it on the port area.

“When you talk about being in the heart of an active port, there are productivity, efficiency and safety concerns,” Shawn Yadon, president of the California Trucking Association, told TT. “I think people who depend on the port for their business have concerns.”

The Port of Oakland is the eighth largest cargo port in the country. In April, 217,993 20-foot equivalent containers were processed there, an increase of 34.3% compared to the same month last year. And it’s an important part of the west coast supply chain. For agriculture, it is especially important for farmers in California and the Midwest who ship millions of pounds of raw materials and frozen meat to Asian countries.

The Howard Terminal has not been used for cargo operations in nearly a decade because it is considered too small for large container ships. However, it is used for mooring ships, parking trucks and containers, as well as operating depots, training longshore workers, and other logistics services.

The privately funded stadium is only part of the Howard Terminal plan known as the Oakland Waterfront Ballpark District Project. The $ 12 billion redevelopment includes not only the ballpark, but also office, retail, hotel space, quality and affordable apartments, and an indoor events venue. A gondola takes baseball fans to a rapid transit station in the Bay Area in the city’s waterfront entertainment district.

The A are reportedly meeting with officials from other cities about relocation. Among them are Portland, Ore. And Las Vegas, where the NFL Raiders moved from Oakland last year.

However, Oakland City Council has written to MLB executives, advising that plans for a stadium at the Howard Terminal are moving forward.

Several city council members, including the vice mayor and president, said the city was determined to negotiate in good faith for a strong future for the A in Oakland and would take up claims that the city was unwilling to have a new stadium on Howard Terminal to negotiate. The city council also said it would consider a non-binding agreement with the team to move the stadium issue forward at its July 20 meeting.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, backing the Howard Terminal’s plan, said in a statement the day MLB authorized the team to begin moving discussions, “The only viable way to get the A’s roots in Oakland is a baseball stadium on the water, ”she said.

Port officials insist they did not take a position on the stadium issue because there is nothing to discuss until the council makes a decision.

“There is no action before the Port Authority Board so there is nothing to be said,” said Marilyn Sandifur, Port of Oakland spokeswoman. “Now the city has closed the comment period for the public and they are reviewing the comments on the environmental review process.”

Leading truckers said the better alternative would be to build a new ballpark near the RingCentral Coliseum on the site of the now-disused Oracle Arena, the former home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, who moved late in the 2019-20 season new Chase Center in downtown San Francisco.

“If you look at a major seaport or industrial site as soon as it creates tourist or residential attraction in those areas, that will be the beginning of the end of those industrial sites,” Weston LaBar, president of the Harbor Trucking Association, told TT. “The Port of Oakland is too important to sacrifice for a ballpark when they have a perfectly developed location to be in. The Port of Oakland is the lifeblood of California’s agricultural export industry. “

Sports stadiums advisor Marc Ganis has worked on two dozen stadium plans and said that time is running out for Oakland to build a new stadium somewhere as the 56-year-old RingCentral Coliseum is out of date and the possibility of moving is now real .

“Oakland should be promoted because they’ve already lost two teams, the Raiders and Warriors,” said Ganis. “The A’s will be reluctant to pack their bags if they can’t make an agreement on the port location.”
