A study released earlier this week showed that over 27% of all EV charging stations in the San Francisco Bay area are non-functioning. Failures are manifold, and the shortcomings many.

22.7% of connectors had unresponsive or unavailable screens, payment system failures, charge initiation failures, network failures, or broken connectors; another 4.9% of chargers had cables too short to reach the car charging port.

In turn, this means 77.3% of chargers were working. Still, this is far from the CPOs’ claims that 95- 98% of the network was in well-working order, so the study’s initiators.

The survey ‘Reliability of Open Public Electric Vehicle Direct Current Fast Chargers’ was headed by UC Berkeley bioengineering professor David Rempel and the environmental non-profit group Cool the Earth. They tested the functionality of 657 charging connectors at all 181 public charging stations in the Bay area, Tesla chargers excluded.

The testers were also not alone in their findings. A CARB survey published in February found that 44% of electric vehicle drivers have experienced issues at charging stations and considered operability and payment major issues to charging.

San Francisco introduced legislation on Tuesday that would place an 18-month moratorium on parcel delivery facilities in the city, a move specifically designed to slow down and investigate Amazon’s rapid expansion of its last-mile delivery operations in the city.

If passed, the legislation would be the first of its kind in a major metropolitan area in the United States to put a moratorium on Amazon warehouses, and lay a foundation for other cities looking to have a say in how Amazon operates in their communities. The bill is expected to pass unanimously, according to those familiar with the legislation.

“Cities are saying we have to push back against companies like Amazon,” said Shamann Walton, the president of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors whose district is the site of several new Amazon warehouse developments. “My hope is that with this legislation we’re able to make Amazon be a responsible employer and make them have conversations with the community. If that doesn’t happen then they won’t get the opportunity to do business here in San Francisco.”

The bill would impose “zoning controls” on the approval of all new parcel delivery service facilities to “allow time for” an investigation on how these facilities impact the communities they operate in, and to establish regulations “to encourage development which provides substantial net benefits and minimize undesirable consequences.”

In particular, the legislation is intended to give communities in San Francisco the chance to push back against low-paying jobs, pollution, and traffic congestion that Amazon brings into the city. Activists who are worried about Amazon’s expansion say that land being used to build more Amazon warehouses could be better used for green space or affordable housing in cities like San Francisco, which are suffering from a decades-long housing crisis and that new jobs should pay workers high enough wages to be able to live in the city.

Although Amazon’s name does not appear in the legislation or resolution, the bill’s proponents told Motherboard it is specifically designed to force Amazon to slow down its expansion into the city.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We want Amazon to pause and have a dialogue with the community, not just try to buy off groups,” said Jim Araby, the strategic campaigns director at UFCW Local 5, which represents 30,000 grocery store workers in northern California and has pushed for the bill. “If the bill passes, like any big project, the planning department will recommend mitigations for a job to be approved and Amazon will have to show the city how it will mitigate impacts, for example, by committing to all electric vehicles. That process, unlike the current one, will take two years instead of three to six months.”

Many of these fights, including the new push for legislation in San Francisco, are being led by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which launched a coordinated national effort, known as the Amazon Project, in May to unionize the e-commerce giant which it argues is dragging down working conditions across the logistics industry. In small towns and cities across the country, the Teamsters alongside other activists have been declaring victories in struggles to block Amazon warehouse plans and tax breaks. The moratorium bill would be a similar victory that they hope would have widespread impact.

Temporary moratoriums on warehouse facilities have passed in other, smaller California cities—and the bill’s backers—a group of labor, community, and environmental activists, expect the bill to pass unanimously in San Francisco.

“There’s concern from the board of supervisors about what happens when package delivery companies come in and pay $21 an hour with no retirement benefits, and flood the neighborhood with cars and trucks,” said Doug Bloch, the political director of Teamsters Joint Council 7, which represents UPS drivers in northern California.

UPS drivers, who are Teamsters union members in San Francisco, earn more $100,000 a year with pensions and healthcare benefits, Bloch noted. According to a town hall meeting led by Amazon in November, Amazon pledges to pay its San Francisco delivery drivers $21 an hour, and warehouse associates $17.25 an hour—less than a dollar more than San Francisco’s minimum wage of $16.32 an hour.

“As blue collar workers, we need to support each other, we need to raise standards. Amazon’s delivery drivers are getting paid far less than we do doing the same job,” said Philip Javier, a 32-year UPS employee who works and lives in San Francisco and earns $39.97 an hour. “I can still afford to live in this city I love because I have a union job.”

“We’re not against Amazon’s growth,” Bloch said, noting that Amazon packages fuel job growth for UPS drivers who are unionized. “But why should Teamsters make two times as much doing the same work for the same company as an Amazon subcontracted delivery driver? It’s about setting standards for a company that can afford to do the right thing for workers and communities and climate.”

During the pandemic, Amazon has rapidly expanded its last mile delivery station network in the United States in order to fulfill same-day and next-day deliveries. Delivery stations are Amazon’s smallest style warehouse and are often located in cities and suburbs, allowing the company to decrease the time it takes to deliver packages to areas with a high-density of Prime customers. Amazon already has three delivery stations in the city of San Francisco, and labor activists have tallied at least 28 Amazon delivery stations in the Bay Area.

There is also controversy over the San Francisco mayor’s office’s quiet agreement with Amazon to begin negotiating the terms of an Amazon delivery station in September at the site of a waste-management company formerly unionized with the Teamsters that could have been used to build 1,000 units of housing. The new legislation is accompanied by a resolution to put a hold on the planning for this Amazon project.

Walton, the president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the city’s top legislative body, says that with this deal and others, Amazon so far “hasn’t shown respect to their neighbors” in the city. “If you bring in a big business and employ a lot of people who aren’t part of that community, you start pushing people out because you take over the area,” said Walton. “Where do these folks have to go? You move out people who are already in the area.”

The legislation was brought to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors by the San Francisco Southeast Alliance, a group of residents, environmental groups, and labor unions. The alliance formed in September to advocate against the pernicious effects of Amazon facilities moving into San Francisco.

“I believe this law will send a message to Amazon in general that San Francisco is a labor city,” said Joel Gonzalez, a produce clerk at Andronico’s supermarket in San Francisco and a member of UFCW local 648. “If you’re going to come here and build your warehouses, you must respect your workers and unions that respect their workers.”

“One of the predictions is that by mid-century we might see tides a foot higher than they are now. So that’s 2050, ”said BART spokesman Jim Allison.

BART engineers say sea level rise could have a number of potential effects. For example, the Embarcadero train station in San Francisco could occasionally be inundated by floods.

Other stations could be threatened by rising groundwater, which would strain the existing pumps and the aging infrastructure of the system.

“The thing for me is that we’re at the height of technology and innovation in the Bay Area, but this is an old system that is really shabby,” said BART driver Jason Caballero.

BART has identified many of the potential problem areas, but the agency relies on injections of money from the federal government just to keep trains running.

“The devastating effects of the pandemic and the dramatic decrease in the number of passengers paying for their tickets have really turned our funding plan upside down,” Allison said.

BART drivers say they understand the transportation company’s financial plight but are concerned about the long-term costs of inaction.

“It might be better to say, ‘Let’s pretend it’ll happen in 10 years.’ And what could the BART system do in 10 years to avoid being caught wading in the BART system with pants down and knee-deep water? ”Asked rider Bianca Espinoza.

Die kurzlebige Tradition überraschte die Franziskaner und angeblich auch die Feuerwehrleute. Anfang Dezember 1948 erfuhren sie, dass eine Bürgergruppe dem am besten dekorierten Feuerwehrhaus einen Preis in Höhe von 1.000 US-Dollar geben würde. Jedes Haus hatte ein Ausgabenlimit von 50 USD.

“Die Feuerwehrmänner der Stadt haben sich mit einer Leidenschaft in das Dekorationsgeschäft gestürzt, die so heiß ist wie jedes Feuer, das sie gelöscht haben”, berichtete The Chronicle am 20. Das erste Jahr hatte eine zusammengewürfelte Qualität, war aber dennoch beeindruckend. Eine Station durchsuchte die Rückseite von Kaufhäusern nach kaputten Mannequins und baute sie zu einem Chor zusammen. Andere haben die Beleuchtung übertrieben. Ein Feuerwehrhaus hatte einen Weihnachtsmann, der mit leuchtenden Augen über der Nachbarschaft auftauchte.

Nicole Meldahl, Geschäftsführerin des Western Neighborhoods-Projekts, sagte, das Thema werde immer noch unter Mitgliedern der gemeinnützigen historischen Organisation diskutiert, in der Farbfotos der Feuerwehr ausgestellt sind, zusammen mit einem Aufsatz von Robert und Marilyn Katzman.

„Viele der Dekorationen waren so aufwendig. Es würde animierte Krippen geben “, sagte Meldahl. “Unser Bürgermeister war wirklich stolz darauf – wir waren damals die einzige Stadt, die dies tat.”

“Die Welt war voller Nachrichten über Krieg, Preissenkungen und Mobilisierung – aber für 46 grinsende, drängelnde Kinder im grün-weißen Muni-Bus war es eine Welt voller Weihnachtszauber”, berichtete The Chronicle am 19. Dezember 1950. “Es gab bunte Lichter, aufgezeichnete Weihnachtslieder, Winterschneeszenen, Zuckerstangen und einen Papier-Weihnachtsmann mit einem Bart aus gesponnenem Glas, der durch zwei 1000-Watt-Augen blinzelte.”

Aber dieses Jahr war das Ende der Tradition. Als die Stadt im November 1951 eine Gehaltserhöhung für Feuerwehrleute ablehnte, enthüllten die Dekorateure das Offensichtliche: Die Displays kosteten weit mehr als das Ausgabenlimit und das Geld war aus den Taschen der Feuerwehrleute gekommen.

Ein Beamter “sagte, die Feuerwehrleute könnten sich die Kosten für Dekorationen und Lichter in diesem Jahr nicht leisten, weil sie einen großen Beitrag zur Kampagne für die Verabschiedung von Proposition A geleistet hätten”, berichtete The Chronicle 1951. “Proposition A, am Wahltag von den Wählern besiegt.” hätte den Feuerwehrleuten und Polizisten der Stadt eine Gehaltsskala gegeben, die auf Veränderungen der Lebenshaltungskosten ausgerichtet ist. “

In den nächsten zwei Jahren versuchten Stadtgruppen, die Tradition wiederzubeleben, indem sie mehr Geld und freiwillige Hilfe anboten. Der Bürgermeister von San Francisco, Elmer Robinson, versuchte einzugreifen, aber die Feuerwehrleute stimmten zweimal gegen eine Wiederbelebung. Das Western Neighborhoods Project enthält Fotos und Geschichten anderer längst vergangener Traditionen in San Francisco, darunter den als Santas Schornstein verkleideten West Portal-Eisenbahntunnel und eine Krippe in Lindley Meadow im Golden Gate Park, zu der lebende Schauspieler und eine Schafherde gehörten durchstreifte den Park in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Krippenausstellung endete 1977.

“Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren alle Schafe verschwunden und mussten Schafe aus einer Herde in Half Moon Bay importieren”, sagte Meldahl. “Es war eine Familientradition, eine Tasse heißen Kakao zu holen und an einer lebenden Krippe vorbeizufahren.”

Was bleibt also im Jahr 2020 übrig?

Dies ist eine dieser Zeiten, in denen Nostalgie einige der besonderen Dinge trübt, die weiterhin auftreten. November 2014, nach Willow, einem verspielten Rentier, das auf dem Dach der kalifornischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in San Francisco, Kalifornien, weidet. Ein Paar Yukon und Willow von Rentieren werden während der jährlichen Ausstellung „Tis the Season for Science“ der Akademie während der Winterferien bis zum 4. Januar im East Garden wohnen.

Von Krippen mit Schauspielern bis hin zum Emporium-Kaufhaus Santa Parade und Dachfahrten, Feuerwachen, die wie Geschenke verpackt sind, Rentieren, die auf einem lebenden Dach grasen, und Gebäuden, die von der anderen Seite der Bucht aus wie verpackte Geschenke aussehen, sterben die Feiertage in San nie Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency reopened all Muni Metro subway stations and on Saturday, for the first time since its closure during COVID, the historic F-Line trams along Market Street and the Embarcadero drove to Fisherman’s Wharf. 19 pandemic.

With San Francisco now in the yellow category and soon all business restrictions by the state will be lifted in mid-June, daily commutes are increasing as workers return to offices with the resurgence of tourist travel.

Transportation officials said drivers are still required to wear masks inside stations and on board trains. The transit agency also announced that the subway tunnels have been modernized and have a working WiFi service.

“To move San Francisco forward, we must do everything we can to get Muni back to full functionality,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed in a statement. “As we reopen more shops and activities, it is important that our transit service can accommodate more passengers and help people get around our city.”

The agency also listened to feedback and decided to create a new temporary bus route – the 36/52 Special. This bus route will serve the hill districts of Forest Hill, Miraloma and Sunnyside on a loop between Forest Hill Station and Glen Park Station.

The N Judah subway service will resume its full route between Ocean Beach and 4th and King Streets (Caltrain). The T Third will be extended to the West Portal and then continued as K Ingleside to Balboa Park Station.

The SFMTA made all changes to the service available on its website.

“Without public transportation, there is no economic recovery,” said Jeffrey Tumlin, SFMTA transportation director. “Our people are committed to keeping San Francisco moving and working tirelessly to bring Muni service back better than ever.”

Service between Balboa Park and Sunnydale. This route will use the newly opened Muni Metro

• Weekends: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Muni Metro buses run between the hours of owl service (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and rail transport

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency (SFMTA) plans to reopen all subway stations this Saturday and introduce a new temporary bus route, officials said this week.

The SFMTA was already restoring the bus routes as the city shifted into less restrictive tiers earlier this month. With this announcement, the agency also announced that the subway tunnels have been modernized and have a working WiFi service.

“To move San Francisco forward, we must do everything we can to get Muni back to full functionality,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed in a statement. “As we reopen more shops and activities, it is important that our transit service can accommodate more passengers and help people get around our city.”

The city closed its metro stations during the lockdown last year, but after the city entered the yellow row last week, the SFMTA has continued its reopening plans.

The agency also listened to feedback and decided to create a new temporary bus route – the 36/52 Special. This bus route will serve the hill districts of Forest Hill, Miraloma and Sunnyside on a loop between Forest Hill Station and Glen Park Station.

With the restrictions lifted in the city, the agency is bringing back the historic railroad lines as well as the N Judah subway service, which will resume its full route between Ocean Beach and 4th and King Streets (Caltrain). The T Third will be extended to the West Portal and then continued as K Ingleside to Balboa Park Station.

The SFMTA made all changes to the service available on its website.
