One by one, Waymo vehicles piled up at the end of an otherwise sleepy intersection in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond neighborhood.

The cars lurched to a halt, as if confused by the sign blocking their path, as they gave a strange mechanical hum. Then they did a U-turn, reversed, and headed south on 15th Avenue toward California Street, where they had come from.

A video shared by KPIX Thursday morning shows the Waymo cars performing the repetitive (and admittedly hilarious) dance that has puzzled neighborhood residents for weeks. The incident also caught the attention of Elon Musk.

“There are days when it can be up to 50 [cars]“Resident Jennifer King told KPIX. “We talked to the drivers, they don’t have much to say unless the car is programmed and they just do their job.”

The autonomous white SUVs with a blue and green W are ubiquitous in the neighborhood and across San Francisco as they gather traffic and other road map information, though it’s unusual for so many of them to get stuck at the same time. However, the cause of the jam is pretty simple.

“We are constantly adapting to the dynamic road rules of San Francisco. In this case, cars traveling on 15th Avenue north of California will have to turn around due to the signs for Slow Streets on Lake, ”a Waymo spokesman told SFGATE in a statement. “So the Waymo driver followed the same road rules that every car must obey.”

The section of Lake Street between 2nd and 28th Avenues was approved as permanent Slow Street on August 3 by the board of directors of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. Cars are only allowed to travel less than a block down Slow Street before reaching their destination.

Lake Street was established as a permanent Slow Street on August 3, causing Waymo vehicles to stop and turn around.

By Thursday noon the hustle and bustle seemed to be over. Only a couple of moving trucks blocked the intersection, and there wasn’t a single Waymo vehicle in sight – until about 10 minutes later I spotted one of the cars traveling west along California Street even though it wasn’t trying to turn right on 15th Avenue .

Waymo said it is currently restricting cars on the road.

No Waymo cars here – the road was mostly clear until Thursday afternoon.

A suspected burglar who snuck into a house chimney on Saturday died of burns after the homeowner unknowingly lit the fireplace, coroner officials said.

Cody Caldwell, 19, of Huron also died of smoke inhalation, according to Fresno County coroners.

Fresno County Police Department said Caldwell climbed the chimney to break into the house and got stuck. When the homeowner returned home, he lit a small flame in the fireplace, MPs said.

The homeowner didn’t know Caldwell was in the chimney before starting the fire, MPs said.

After lighting the fire, the homeowner heard Caldwell’s screams. When the house went up in smoke, the homeowner tried to put out the fire.

Ten minutes later, Caldwell was still moving, breathing in the chimney.

The fire department was finally able to dismantle the chimney to get to Caldwell.

But by the time they got to Caldwell he was dead, the MPs said.

From rehab units to building-wide brickwork, the construction noise drives some people crazy.

A disgruntled Steve Dishler posted a video on Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Twitter page about construction noise in his Lakeview building after management, his city council and the Department of Buildings said nothing illegal was happening so the work did not stop can be

“A thousand people live in this building. The students are obviously unable to carry out their work. Parents cannot rest their babies during the day. I cannot do my job. It’s incredibly inconsiderate, ”he said.

How many other people are fed up with recording their moves in public? CBS 2 reviewed the 311 logs. Within a few minutes’ walk of Dishler’s building, two complaints about equipment noise have been filed in the past 20 days.

CBS 2 asked Governor JB Pritzker’s office why condominium remodeling and facade work were not on hold until the stay at home order was cleared.

Consider other cities like Boston that have stopped construction since March unless it’s an emergency. San Francisco limited the crew to health and public works projects. Elective additions and maintenance are prohibited in Dallas. so is remodeling.

In Illinois, the governor’s stay at home makes construction an essential business.

Although the mayor can shut down the lakefront and large parks, city officials said they had opted for condominium associations to call for building construction to be stopped.

This might be a mystery to some housing associations.

“We as the building’s representative could be sued for unauthorized conclusions from a contract,” an anonymous woman told us about the ongoing construction work on her condominium building.

She said it was impossible to get anything done with all the noise the work made.

“I was sometimes unable to attend work meetings because it was so loud,” she said. “When I asked how long it was going to be, they said they still have a lot of woodwork to do.”

The threat of bills prevented the apartment sign from putting down the gavel for renovation work in the building.

“I just think that the state shouldn’t make them choose between taking legal action and protecting residents,” the woman said.

CBS 2 never heard directly from the governor’s office, but Pritzker answered a question about city rules at Monday’s press conference.

“The communities have the option to have stricter rules than we have proposed on any subject,” he said.

A city spokesman reiterated that residents can call 311 with noise complaints.
