CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell below .500 with a stunning 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers, who won their second game of the season Sunday despite playing with a third-string quarterback and interim head coach.

Brady was 32-of-49 passing for 290 yards for the Bucs (3-4). One of those incompletions came when a wide-open Mike Evans dropped what would have been a 64-yard touchdown on the third play of the game.

Brady hasn’t had a losing record this far into a season since the 2002 New England Patriots dropped four straight games to reach 3-4.

P.J. Walker threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns for Carolina (2-5) in place of injured Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. The Panthers won for the first time under interim coach Steve Wilks, who replaced Matt Rhule when he was fired Oct. 10.

Tampa Bay’s defense allowed the Panthers to rush for 173 yards. D’Onta Foreman ran for 118 yards, adn Chuba Hubbard added 63 yards and a touchdown.

Carolina came in as a 13 1/2-point underdog and having lost 12 of 13 games. It’s now one game behind the Bucs and Atlanta Falcons for first place in the NFC South.

COMMANDERS 23, PACKERS 21

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense sputtered and Washington handed the Packers their third straight loss.

Nursing a sore thumb and out of sync with receivers, Rodgers was 23 of 35 for 194 yards and the Packers went 0 of 6 on third down. Green Bay (3-4) had just 232 total yards of offense to Washington’s 364 and lost Allen Lazard to a shoulder injury, making him the team’s third wide receiver to go down during the first losing streak under coach Matt LaFleur.

Rodgers finished the game face down on the turf after a failed final play that ended with him throwing a lateral out of bounds.

Washington’s front four also played a role in frazzling Rodgers and making him look more like a rookie than a 38-year-old four-time MVP. Only a series of penalties on the Commanders (3-4) made the game close in the final minutes.

Taylor Heinicke, making his first start of the season in place of injured Carson Wentz, threw for two touchdowns — including a perfect 37-yard pass to Terry McLaurin — and was 20 of 33 for 200 yards.

Heinicke got off to a rough start, going 1 for 7 — including an interception that De’Vondre Campbell returned 63 yards for a touchdown.

DOLPHINS 16, STEELERS 10

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Tua Tagovailoa got Miami off to a fast start in his return from a concussion, and the Dolphins held on throughout a scoreless second half to beat Pittsburgh.

The Dolphins (4-3) snapped a three-game skid that began on Sept. 29, when Tagovailoa was concussed in a loss at Cincinnati.

Miami coach Mike McDaniel opted not to have Jason Sanders kick his fourth field goal of the game midway through the third quarter for a two-score lead. Chase Edmonds was stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-3 from the Pittsburgh 13.

The decision loomed large as Miami punted on its next five possessions. But the Dolphins intercepted rookie Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett twice in the closing minutes to seal it.

The Steelers (2-5) fell short a week after they held off Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.

Tagovailoa finished 21 of 35 for 261 yards and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Raheem Mostert on the Dolphins’ opening drive. Miami added two field goals by Sanders to lead 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Pickett, who was cleared from the NFL’s concussion protocol Friday, was 32 for 44 for 257 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

CHIEFS 44, 49ERS 23

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns as Kansas City rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat San Francisco.

Mahomes got off to a rough start in this Super Bowl rematch with his early interception putting Kansas City (5-2) in a 10-0 hole. But he led the Chiefs to touchdowns on six of the next seven drives.

Mecole Hardman scored on two TD runs and an 8-yard catch, Justin Watson caught a 4-yard TD, and JuJu Smith-Schuster finished it off with a 45 yard catch-and-run. Clyde Edwards-Helaire also scored on a 16-yard run.

Kansas City improved to 13-9 with Mahomes when falling behind by at least 10 points, including the Super Bowl win over the 49ers (3-4) following the 2019 season.

The Niners (3-4) dropped back-to-back games despite getting a boost from the addition this week of running back Christian McCaffrey, who had 62 yards on 10 scrimmage touches in his San Francisco debut.

But San Francisco settled for three field goals and came up empty on another chance when Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception at the goal line before Kansas City ran away with it in the second half.

GIANTS 23, JAGUARS 17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Two New York defenders tackled Christian Kirk inside the 1-yard line as time expired to preserve the win over Jacksonville.

The Giants matched their best start since 2008. Quarterback Daniel Jones ran for a career-high 107 yards and a touchdown, turning to his legs to carry the Giants (6-1) down the stretch. He ran for 35 yards on a go-ahead drive and capped it with a 1-yard plunge after consecutive penalties by Jacksonville moved the ball inches from the goal line.

Jacksonville had a final shot and reached the New York 1-yard on Trevor Lawrence’s pass to Kirk. But Julian Love and Xavier McKinney stopped Kirk short of the goal line, even as Jaguars players tried pushing the pile into the end zone.

Lawrence finished 22 of 43 for 310 yards for reeling Jacksonville (2-5), which lost its fourth straight.

Saquon Barkley finished with 107 yards on 24 carries, and Graham Gano kicked three field goals for New York. Gano’s last one gave the Giants some breathing room.

JETS 16, BRONCOS 9

DENVER (AP) — Rookie Breece Hall ran for a 62-yard touchdown before leaving with a knee injury and surprising New York won its fourth straight by beating backup quarterback Brett Rypien and punchless Denver.

The Jets (5-2) are off to their best start since 2010, have their first four-game winning streak since 2015 and have already surpassed their win total from last year when they went 4-13. New York improved to 4-0 on the road.

The Broncos (2-5) lost their fourth straight despite another outstanding defensive performance as starting quarterback Russell Wilson sat out with a pulled hamstring.

Zach Wilson was held without a touchdown for the second straight week. He was 16 of 26 for 121 yards but did enough for the Jets to win.

Rypien went 24 for 46 for 225 yards and no touchdowns and threw a second-half interception. Rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner broke up Rypien’s fourth-down pass into the end zone to Courtland Sutton with just under 2 minutes remaining.

The Jets lost Hall to a left knee injury in the second quarter when he was tackled by Patrick Surtain II and Jonas Griffith after a short run. He was helped off the field and carted to the locker room. Coach Robert Saleh said after the game the initial diagnosis for Hall is an ACL injury.

RAVENS 23, BROWNS 20

BALTIMORE (AP) — Gus Edwards ran for two touchdowns in his first game back from a major knee injury, and Baltimore avoided another fourth-quarter collapse thanks to a couple huge Cleveland penalties.

The Ravens (4-3) led 23-13 after Justin Tucker’s 55-yard field goal with 11:24 remaining, but the Browns responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt to make it a three-point game. Then a fumble by Baltimore’s Justice Hill gave Cleveland the ball at its own 16 with 3:12 to play.

With the Browns driving, Amari Cooper was called for offensive pass interference, and a false-start penalty on a field-goal attempt forced Cade York to try it from 60 yards. His attempt was blocked by Malik Harrison with 1:59 remaining.

Cleveland (2-5) has lost four in a row.

Edwards missed all of last season and the first six games of this one, but he rushed for 66 yards scored on runs of 7 and 1. Baltimore remained tied with Cincinnati atop the AFC North.

The Ravens’ Lamar Jackson was sacked three times and threw for only 120 yards. The Browns’ Jacoby Brissett was 22 of 27 for 258 yards, but he was sacked five times and fumbled on one of them.

COWBOYS 24, LIONS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ezekiel Elliott ran for two 1-yard touchdowns and Dak Prescott threw for a score in his return from injury while Dallas leaned on its defense to beat Detroit.

The Cowboys (5-2) recovered Jamaal Williams’ fumble inside their 1 with a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Jared Goff was responsible for four other Detroit turnovers — he threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles.

Prescott was predictably ragged after missing five games with a fractured right thumb. He was 19 of 25 for 207 yards, while Goff was 21 of 26 for 228 yards. Goff’s first three turnovers led to the three Dallas touchdowns.

The Lions (1-5) got a solid showing for three quarters from the NFL’s worst defense, but coach Dan Campbell fell to 0-11-1 on the road with the Lions.

Elliott had 57 yards on 15 carries, and Tony Pollard rushed 12 times for 83 yards.

SEAHAWKS 37, CHARGERS 23

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Rookie Kenneth Walker III rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns, Marquise Goodwin caught a pair of scores, and Seattle jumped out to a 17-point first-quarter lead and beat Los Angeles.

Geno Smith completed 20 of 27 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, his fifth multi-TD game of the season. Jason Myers added three field goals for the Seahawks (4-3), who have won three of four and took a half-game lead in the NFC West.

Seattle led 17-0 late in the first quarter, its largest lead after 15 minutes since a win over New Orleans in Week 13 of 2013. It was the Seahawks’ largest road lead at the end of the first since 2000.

It was the third straight week the Chargers (4-3) fell behind by double digits in the first quarter. They rallied against Cleveland and Denver, but were unable to pull it off this time and had a three-game winning streak snapped. LA now trails Kansas City by one game in the AFC West.

Justin Herbert was 33 of 51 for 293 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, marking the second time in his career he has thrown at least 50 passes in consecutive games. Austin Ekeler had 127 scrimmage yards (96 receiving, 31 rushing) and a pair of touchdowns, giving him eight over the last three games.

TITANS 19, COLTS 10

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Andrew Adams returned an interception 76 yards for the first pick-6 of his career, and Tennessee never trailed while completing its second straight sweep of AFC South rival Indianapolis.

The reigning two-time division champion Titans (4-2) won their fourth straight overall, and they’ve now beaten the Colts five straight times.

Randy Bullock made four field goals, the last two providing Tennessee’s first points this season in the fourth quarter. Bullock’s 48-yarder provided the final margin with 4:47 remaining.

The Titans forced three turnovers, the last on Michael Pittman Jr.’s fumble with 3:22 left. Jeffery Simmons also had one of three sacks for Tennessee.

Derrick Henry helped seal the win with his third straight 100-yard rushing game, finishing with a season-high 128 yards on 30 carries.

Matt Ryan went 33 of 44 for 243 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice. The Colts (3-3-1) saw their two-game win streak end.

BENGALS 35, FALCONS 17

CINCINNATI (AP) — Joe Burrow passed for 345 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as Cincinnati scored on its first four possessions to roll past Atlanta.

The Cincinnati quarterback played his best game of the season, finishing 34 of 42 for 481 yards and three touchdowns and running for a 1-yard score as the defending AFC champion Bengals (4-3) moved above .500 for the first time this season.

Receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd both eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the first half. Boyd finished with a career-high 155 yards on eight catches. Chase also caught eight passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Marcus Mariota completed just eight passes for the Falcons (3-4), whose strong running game was also stymied by Cincinnati. Mariota threw for 124 yards and Atlanta generated only 214 yards of offense to the Bengals’ 537.

RAIDERS 38, TEXANS 20

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Josh Jacobs rushed for 143 yards and three second-half touchdowns as Las Vegas ran away from Houston.

In a battle of one-win teams coming off byes, the Raiders (2-4) dominated the Texans (1-4-1) after halftime, outscoring them 28-10 behind 227 yards of offense, including 98 from Jacobs on the ground.

Las Vegas, which erased a three-point, fourth-quarter deficit, scored on four straight possessions before safety Duron Harmon sealed the win by intercepting Davis Mills and returning it 73 yards for a touchdown.

Jacobs has rushed for 441 yards in his last three games. He became the first Raider to rush for more than 100 yards in three straight games since Napoleon Kaufman in 1997. It was his second career game with three rushing TDs.

Derek Carr completed 21 of 27 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. Davante Adams had eight receptions for 95 yards.

Mills completed 28 of 40 attempts for 302 yards and two touchdowns, along with his pick-6 to Harmon. Dameon Pierce led the Texans’ rushing attack with 92 yards on 20 carries.

It wasn’t pretty. In fact, it was ugly.

Really ugly.

It was a good old-fashioned beat down of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the hands of a rookie, third-string quarterback, Brock Purdy, and a talented San Francisco 49ers team.

The very first drive of the game resulted in a Deebo Samuel touchdown, which if anything was a sign of things to come. Earlier on that opening drive, a fantastic safety blitz by Keanu Neal was negated for a helmet–to–helmet hit on San Francisco’s quarterback, Brock Purdy. This ended up being costly, and although Keanu Neal’s aggressiveness has been a welcome addition for a banged-up Bucs’ secondary these past couple of weeks, there was no need for Neal to go high on the play considering he had a free run at Purdy .

7-0, 49ers.

With the Bucs’ first chance to respond on offense, after a solid drive consisting of several first downs, Brady threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans which was called back due to a Donovan Smith holding penalty. Shortly thereafter, on third down, Bucs’ head coach, Todd Bowles, inexplicably opted to send out his accurate but light-footed kicker, Ryan Succop, to attempt a 55-yard field goal. It didn’t come anywhere close to the uprights.

INLINE

On the following possession for San Francisco, an eight play 62-yard drive by Brock Purdy resulted in the quarterback putting an exclamation mark on the drive with a rushing touchdown.

14-0, 49ers.

The Bucs responded with a drive that consisted of a predictable screen pass to Chris Godwin, a check down to White, and an incompletion on third down with the pocket collapsing before another punt by Jake Camarda.

READ MORE: Cam Newton Says He’s Better Than Current Quarterbacks in NFC South

The man with the illustrious title of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’, Brock Purdy picked up right where he left off on the next drive, eventually connecting on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey, which upon video review, revealed that McCaffrey bobbled the ball. It didn’t appear to be clear whether he was able to regain possession prior to getting both feet in bounds. It was an impressive recovery by Logan Ryan who was initially burned on the play, but managed to knock the ball loose. After the review, the officials ruled it a touchdown.

21-0, 49ers.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, and the 49ers just passed midfield, Deebo Samuel took a handoff up the middle, and was folded up awkwardly when gang tackled by Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Devin White. Unfortunately, Samuel had to be carted off the field, and it appeared to be serious injury suffered by the San Francisco star.

The play resulted in a fumble, which was recovered by the Bucs, who then took over at their own 40-yard line.

With just under four minutes left in the game, Tom Brady connected on a 30+ yard pass to Chris Godwin to bring the Buccaneers into the red zone. Two plays later, on third down, Brady was furious with the officials after Godwin appeared to be dislodged from his route illegally, without a flag. On 4th and one, the Bucs stayed in shotgun to go for it from the San Francisco 9-yard line, and Brady missed a wide open Mike Evans in the endzone – firing the ball at his feet – resulting in a turnover on downs.

With San Francisco marching down the field yet again, Buccaneers’ defensive end Anthony Nelson dropped into coverage and picked off Purdy. But in a cruel twist of fate, and true to the way things have gone for the Bucs’ this season, the play was called back for a terrible defensive holding call on Carlton Davis – one that the announcers and officials expert all agreed was a bad call on the broadcast.

On the very next play, Purdy delivered a 32-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk who was wide open after burning Jamel Dean on a double move.

28-0, 49ers.

The best way to summarize what was a first half from hell for the Buccaneers is to take a quick look at Brock Purdy’s numbers heading into the locker room.

The last pick in the 2022 NFL draft went 14/18 for 185 yards passing, with 2 passing TD’s, a rushing TD, and a quarterback rating of 146.5 against the Buccaneers’ top-5 scoring defense.

Scroll to Continue

half time.

One bright spot for the Bucs was Deven Thompkins. He was effective as a punt and kick returner for most of the game. Bringing some juice to a role that had previously been nothing but vanilla.

Thompkins started the second half off with a big return, taking the ball all the way to the San Francisco 44-yard line.

Just a few plays later, under duress in the pocket, Brady overshot Mike Evans on another poorly delivered pass attempt which resulted in an interception. To make matters worse, Brady appeared to have suffered a hand injury on the previous play.

San Francisco responded quickly, with Christian McCaffrey taking a handoff to the house from the Buccaneers’ 39-yard line.

35-0, 49ers.

On the Buccaneers’ ensuing drive, they were able to march the ball into San Francisco territory. With Scotty Miller streaking down the far sideline on third down, Brady under shot the speedy receiver, forcing a fourth down. The Bucs converted 4th down on a pass from Brady to Fournette over the middle. On the next play, Brady threw an interception to 49ers linebacker, Dre Greenlaw, in the middle of the field.

With 2:48 left in the third quarter, the Buccaneers finally found the end zone. That said, it was more of an accident than a well executed play. Godwin couldn’t secure a pass in the front of the end zone, which popped into the air, and Russell Gage found himself in the right place at the right time, plucking the ball just before it hit the turf, and rolling into the end Zone.

35-7, 49ers.

After the Buccaneers’ traded ugly possessions with a mostly second string San Francisco 49ers team for the majority of the fourth quarter, the clock eventually struck zeros. For Bucs fans, the final whistle more than likely resulted in a feeling of relief, knowing it wouldn’t be possible for their team to experience any more embarrassment at the hands of a team that is expected to be a suitor for Tom Brady’s services next season.

For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this season has seen a lot of really poor play and execution. Their quarterback had not been a source of that poor play, by any means.

Until today.

Tom Brady was inconsistent, inaccurate, and very shaky throughout the vast majority of this football game. His two interceptions, and countless missed throws throughout the contest clearly support this claim.

That said, it’s not Tom Brady’s fault that the Buccaneers are collapsing before our very eyes. Considering what’s gone on around him, whether it be the litany of injuries, penalties, or terrible coaching decisions that have plagued this team, he’s been fighting an uphill battle all year. Although Tom Brady did not play well today, he’s played more than well enough for this Buccaneers’ team to have a lot more wins than they do.

The craziest part about all of this? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still sitting in first place in the NFC South, and are set to host a home playoff game at Raymond James Stadium within next month or so.

If the playoffs started today, the Bucs would host the 10-3 Dallas Cowboys in that first-round wild card game.

Although it feels like the football gods want to see Tom Brady play at least one more postseason game in his illustrious career, the Bucs are going to have to correct an extensive list of issues if they have any hope of not being embarrassed in that game.

And if today’s performance in San Francisco is any indication of what is to come, then I wouldn’t put my money on the Buccaneers’ hanging onto their current spot atop the NFC South.

I guess they’ll have to take it one week at a time, and work to build some positive momentum to close out the season. Hopefully that process won’t be as ugly as what we saw today at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.

New data from Clearwater-based moving and storage company PODS suggests people are moving to Central Florida in droves.

The company recently analyzed data from nearly half a million moves during 2021 and early 2022, and determined that the No. 1 destination for PODS customers, in terms of more people moving in than out, was the Sarasota area. Tampa Bay came in at No. 4, Ocala at No. 5 and Orlando at No. 9.

Sarasota and Ocala ranked high on the same list last year, but Tampa Bay and Orlando are newcomers. Jacksonville (No. 11) and Melbourne (No. 15) also made this year’s list.

Related: Tampa Bay, Gulf Coast cities lead America’s ’emerging housing markets’

While Florida’s cost of living is on the rise, the PODS study pointed out that it’s still generally lower than in places like New York or San Francisco, and the lack of a state income tax adds to the appeal. The study also drew a connection between remote work and retirees, as some workers might be looking to relocate closer to their aging parents.

Filling out the top 10 destinations: Dallas-Fort Worth (No. 2), Nashville (No. 3), Myrtle Beach-Wilmington, SC (No. 6), Knoxville, Tenn. (No. 7), Atlanta (No. 8) and Phoenix (No. 10).

Where are those movers coming from? According to PODS, the top 10 sites where more people are moving from than to are, in order: Los Angeles; the San Francisco bay area; Chicago; Long Island, NY; Central New Jersey; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Stockton-Modesto, Calif.; Hudson Valley, NY; and Philadelphia.

Sarasota topped the list in 2021, according to PODS’ moving trends.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Since the COVID-19 pandemic set in, many Americans have packed up and moved to states in the Southeast.

Whether it be due to working remotely, the desire to live closer to family or simply looking for a new ZIP code, moving and storage company PODS says Americans are packing up and settling in new cities.

While the moving company cannot predict the future, based on 2021 trends, PODS has comprised a list of the top 20 cities where people are moving to, and the Tampa Bay area tops the list.

Coming in the No. 1 spot, Sarasota led the nation in the highest increase in resides from January 2021 through March 2022. The Dallas-Fort Worth area ranked second and Nashville followed behind. In the fourth spot is the Tampa Bay region among US cities that have seen the most growth.

PODS says the move could be influenced by less volatile seasonal weather changes and more space to access nature — have you seen Clearwater Beach?

But what about where people are moving from? According to PODS, three California cities are among the Top 10 cities where residents are making a grand exit in 2021, and it’s continued in 2022.

Officials said the move could stem from high state taxes and the cost of living. In addition, PODS believes permanent remote policies could be another factor for the high number of moves out of the cities on the list.

The top cities people are moving out of include Los Angeles, the San Francisco area, Chicago, Long Island, NY, and Central New Jersey.

Tom Brady has some unfinished business and may very well achieve it all. The substantial dose of joy also brings in some Concern about his future. However, GM Jason Licht has made some clarity over the athlete’s stay in the Bay.

Despite the Bucs’ collective bargaining agreement renovation and salary-cap wizardry over the last 2 weeks, one agreement remains intact; The same one that enables quarterback Tom Brady to become a top free prospect in the offseason. Brady just has one campaign left with Tampa Bay, and he may become a free agent by 2023. As for rumors circulating that he may want to end his career with the San Francisco 49ers, everything seems to be an enigma.

The media asked Buccaneers GM, Jason Licht, at the NFL Owners’ Meet; Questioning if there had been any discussions about elongating Brady’s tender further than this season. To no one’s surprise, he could not even say.

According to Mike Florio of the Pro Football Talk, Licht said to reporters on Monday, “We’re just happy that we have him back. We’ll see where it goes from here. We’re just happy he’s going to be playing for us this year, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Corporate home buying worsens housing market

Companies are buying up rental properties faster than they can be listed for sale, squeezing renters and buyers totally out of the market.

TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa made the number three spot for US cities people are moving to, according to a recent study by the Seattle-based real estate brokerage firm Redfin.

Redfin’s study ranks Miami at number one, followed by Phoenix, Tampa, Sacramento, and Las Vegas to round out the top five.

This is having a significant impact on Tampa Bay’s housing market with Tampa forecasted to be the hottest housing market in the country in 2022, according to Zillow.

Last month, an analysis by Zillow found that housing inventory in the region is down 46% from pre-pandemic levels.

READ: ‘I think there is hope for the everyday first-time homebuyer’: Tampa realtor featured in HGTV show

The average home in the area sold for 41% over the expected asking price, according to a recent analysis conducted by Zillow.

“Tampa really has the best mix we found, of strong forecasted home value growth, strong demographics, a solid pipeline of buyers young and old; the traditional retirees and younger buyers looking to take advantage of a coastal lifestyle,” said Cory Hopkins, an economics manager for Zillow in an interview with Fox 13 last month.

Studies show a majority of the new home buyers in Tampa Bay are from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and DC

“Buyers need to ready, they need to be aggressive and need to be ready to make a decision and submit their offer immediately – you cannot sit around and contemplate and analyze…if you want a property you need to actions,” said Hopkins .

Tampa Bay grew by more than 40,000 people between July 2020 and July 2021, according to the US Census Bureau.

For a long time, researchers at the University of Florida included a question in their ongoing, decades-long survey of Floridians: If you weren’t born in this state, why are you here?

The answers remained a constant for so many years that in 2019 they stopped asking.

“‘The weather’ or ‘I moved here for my job’ were the two primary reasons. Considerably lower down, in third place, was ‘family,’” said Scott Richards, associate director at the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. “It was remarkably stable, even through severe economic disruptions.”

Experts say no one knows if those reasons have changed, like so many other facets of American life have, during the coronavirus pandemic. But Florida’s elected leaders contend that something different is luring residents. Gov. Ron DeSantis touts the state as a destination for those fleeing COVID-19 restrictions. Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has suggested northeasterners are escaping “tax hell” for the income-tax-free Sunshine State.

What we do know is the state had 221,000 more residents arrive from other U.S. states than leave from July 2020 to July of last year, according to the latest population estimates from the Census Bureau. That’s Florida’s largest gain in residents from within the U.S. since 2005.

The state’s net gain of approximately 260,000 residents, which includes 39,000 international migrants, is up a little over the previous two years, “but it’s not exceedingly high,” said Stefan Rayer, director of the population program at the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

Two recently released reports, one using data compiled by Zillow and Allied Van Lines, and the other analyzing new Florida driver’s licenses, show New York is the No. 1 supplier of new residents to Florida and Tampa Bay, as per usual. Other metro areas sending a lot of people to Tampa Bay specifically, according to that data, are Atlanta and Chicago.

“It’s New York pretty much every year, but if you look at No. 2 for people coming to Florida overall, it’s always Georgia,” Rayer said, referring to historic Census data. “And No. 1 for people who leave Florida is Georgia. So distance matters.”

The demographics of residents flowing in and out can affect the state’s economy and politics. For instance, the number of active voters registered as Republicans in Florida surpassed Democrats for the first time in modern history last year. Susan MacManus, a professor emerita at the University of South Florida and expert on Florida politics, believes that’s mostly due to Democrats suspending in-person voter registration efforts during COVID. But she said migration could also be a factor.

“It’s hard data to get,” MacManus said. “My big question is, ‘Were (new Florida arrivals) typical northeasterners who just want better weather and bring Democratic voting patterns with them, or more affluent people who were upset with lockdowns and who may vote Republican?’”

“If anyone tells you they know definitively,” MacManus said, “they’re lying.”

While experts say big-picture data is lacking, new arrivals and recent departures from Tampa Bay were happy to discuss personal reasons for moving. The Tampa Bay Times received more than 250 responses to recent social media posts seeking their stories.

Those responding to the survey, which wasn’t scientific, often cited lower taxes and more affordable homes, along with the sunny weather, as reasons for moving to Florida. A few mentioned COVID-19 restrictions. Many said they chose Tampa Bay because of fond vacation memories. After the weather, the most common reason for moving was job-related. Some had been offered a better salary to relocate, yet more cited the ability to work remotely. For those leaving Florida — hundreds of thousands move out of the state every year — many mentioned politics, but more mentioned a feeling that they could find better schools and more robust services somewhere else for the same cost.

Here’s what some respondents had to say.

Moved to Florida

Harshneel More, 30, Tampa (via San Francisco)

<img decoding="async" sizes="(max-width: 432px) 400px, 620px" alt="Harshneel More, 30, looks onto Sparkman Wharf from a deck of Industirous, a shared office building where he works from as a senior applications security engineer for tech company Fast, while waiting for programs on his computer to load to start his workday on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022. More and his wife moved to the area last summer from San Francisco. [ IVY CEBALLO | Times ]

When his San Francisco-based employer announced in 2020 that employees could permanently work remote from anywhere, the newly married More started thinking it might be time to branch out.”

He booked a trip to check out Tampa and Miami last summer. He ended up skipping South Florida after he and his wife, the founder of an architecture jobs marketplace startup, fell in love with Sparkman Wharf and Armature Works. They moved in July, trading a small one-bedroom for a two-bedroom apartment with a workout area in a new luxury tower in Tampa’s Water Street district.

“We were able to get a bigger space, with a dedicated home office,” while keeping his San Francisco salary, More said. “I really liked the amenities, like swimming pools, gyms, things you couldn’t get back home.”

He said the area was on his radar because of Tampa’s growing reputation as a hub for tech work. A senior application security engineer for Fast, an online payment services startup, More said he was especially impressed when he realized the publicly traded cybersecurity firm KnowBe4 is based in Clearwater. “I knew them,” he said. “Silicon Valley is always seen as the place to be, but I’ve been encouraging people I know to consider Tampa.” He said he feels even more rooted in Tampa since, a month after he moved, Fast announced it was opening a second headquarters where their CEO would be based, in Tampa.

He’s enjoying less expensive groceries and meeting a lot of other young professionals who’ve recently moved from places like Denver, New York City and southern California. His one peeve: “I did notice San Francisco had less traffic. It was small streets, so everyone drove small sedans. Here you see bigger cars, big pickup trucks, and they’re all moving at high speed — I had to get used to that.”

Rayellen Griffin, 48, St. Petersburg (via Independence, Ky.)

<img decoding="async" sizes="(max-width: 432px) 400px, 620px" alt="Rayellen Griffin, 48, walks her dog Rembrandt on the St. Pete Pier on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022 in St. Petersburg. Griffin moved to St. Pete from Northern Kentucky last March. [ DIRK SHADD | Times ]

Griffin had been vacationing in Tampa Bay for years from her home state of Kentucky. She had a series of life-changing events. She lost her parents and older sister within a couple of years. She watched the last of her three grown children leave home in rural Independence, about 15 miles south of Cincinnati. She separated from her husband after realizing their plans for the future were “very different.” So she wanted a fresh start.

Tampa Bay “felt less touristy than other places in Florida, and even the touristy areas didn’t seem so bad,” she said. She considered Bradenton first, but a coworker who’d moved to St. Petersburg suggested she visit. Describing herself as “actually very liberal, even though I’m from Kentucky,” Griffin liked the city’s political makeup and LGBTQ inclusiveness. “And there’s no freezing rain.”

She moved into an apartment in the Gateway neighborhood with her dog and cat “just before prices really started going up.” The only downside, she said, has been the cost of living. She’s watched her neighbors’ rent go up 30 percent and anticipates a big increase when her lease expires. “I’m having a hard time finding a job that pays me enough to stay in St. Petersburg,” she said. She does not have a degree but has experience doing administrative work and working in call centers. For now, she’s working temp jobs and living off savings. “I hope I can stay. … Kentucky was depressing. There’s plenty to do here, like the beach or the Pier, even if I’m broke.”

Julianne Recine, 49, Westchase (via New York City)

A lifelong resident of New York City, Recine relocated to Florida in July 2021 with her young son and husband, who works remotely for a defense contractor. “I didn’t come down here for the weather. It’s nice, don’t get me wrong, but I miss the winter and snow,” she said. “Quite frankly, it was freedom.”

Recine’s family began mulling a move as New York schools remained closed last spring due to COVID-19. “I didn’t want my son going to school on Zoom … and there was a high level of fear that made it hard to get together with people,” said Recine, who kept her remote job as a financial consultant.

Tampa had long been on her husband’s radar, but more as a retirement destination, until “the pandemic accelerated everything.” Recine said they were able to compete in the challenging housing market because they bought a home from owners who didn’t plan to move out for five months. The Recines did not sell their house in the Bronx.

An appreciation for DeSantis also factored in. “Do I agree with everything he says? No. But mostly.” Recine had once prided herself as being a “gritty, liberal New Yorker,” she said, “but the term ‘liberal New Yorker’ has been so distorted by where the left has taken it that I can no longer be associated with it.” Recine said she was specifically referring to New York being soft on criminals.

As for Tampa life, “I’ve been pleasantly surprised. … You hear there’s no good Chinese outside of New York, but (Tampa’s) Yummy House is excellent.”

Katherine La Rochelle, 48, Tampa (via Denver)

<img decoding="async" sizes="200px" alt="Katherine La Rochelle attends her first Gasparilla parade. She moved to Tampa in 2021 from Denver." class="lazy" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 511 790"/%3E" style="object-position:50% 50%;transition:opacity 0.5s ease 0.5s;opacity:0" title="Katherine La Rochelle attends her first Gasparilla parade. She moved to Tampa in 2021 from Denver."/>Katherine La Rochelle attends her first Gasparilla parade. She moved to Tampa in 2021 from Denver. [ Courtesy of Katherine La Rochelle ]

Last year, La Rochelle, a vice president at a San Francisco-based startup, and her husband, a software engineer, realized their 110-year-old Craftsman home in Denver was worth about 50 percent more than they’d paid a few years earlier and wondered: “What if this all blows up?” They’d limped through the 2008 housing crash as homeowners in Phoenix. They did not want to get stuck in Denver where, La Rochelle said, they were disillusioned by rising costs, homeless people in their neighborhood and what they characterize as an unchecked increase in violent crime.

“We wondered where can we do better on taxes,” La Rochelle said, “after being bled dry and seeing no improvements.” Florida made sense. They’d loved living near the water when they had lived in France years ago, and “we lean Libertarian, so we liked the personal freedom aspects.” Tampa became the top candidate when La Rochelle found a gifted private school for her daughter — one of only a handful in the state — and discovered a burgeoning girls’ youth hockey scene. “She and my husband play hockey, so that was very important to them.”

Their home on the western edge of Hillsborough County cost about what they paid in Denver five years ago, and La Rochelle kept her job. “I haven’t really looked at what jobs pay here,” she said. One thing she misses: public transportation in the form of light rail and frequently running buses.

Getting out of Florida

Adam Kuhn, 41, Asheville, N.C. (via St. Petersburg)

<img decoding="async" sizes="200px" alt="Adam Kuhn moved from St. Petersburg to Asheville, North Carolina." class="lazy" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 750 750"/%3E" style="object-position:50% 50%;transition:opacity 0.5s ease 0.5s;opacity:0" title="Adam Kuhn moved from St. Petersburg to Asheville, North Carolina."/>Adam Kuhn moved from St. Petersburg to Asheville, North Carolina. [ Courtesy of Adam Kuhn ]

After 16 years in St. Petersburg, Kuhn and his wife headed to the mountains in late 2020 in what he called a recent “mass exodus” of his family to Asheville. That included a sister who had spent 20 years in St. Pete and his parents in Pinellas Park. They visited the area often after some Florida friends moved first. They decided to make the move while their two children were doing school remotely, thinking it would be less of a “social impact” on them.

Kuhn, a web engineer for a Silicon Valley startup, said the other big factors included the desire to experience a new climate and environment and a desire to get away from Florida’s “shifting political landscape.” He said he appreciates living in a politically diverse state, as it gives him an opportunity to teach his children to accept other viewpoints and coexist with people they disagree with. He felt that was no longer the case in Florida. “I think there’s a lot of hay made about Florida being a purple state,” he said, “but my feeling was that it was deeply red when we left.”

The family chose to keep their home in St. Petersburg and rent it out, while also buying in Asheville. The somewhat higher cost of living was a bit of a shock, Kuhn said, but so far they’re happy with the move. Kuhn does worry about some of the same changes that he saw in St. Petersburg happening there. “I was a big fan of the 600 block, the Local 662, Fubar,” he said referring to St. Petersburg’s shuttered live music venues. “The same gentrification that happened there could happen here.”

Harrison Aquino, 29, Buffalo via Pensacola

<img decoding="async" sizes="200px" alt="Harrison Aquino moved from Florida to Buffalo, New York in 2021." class="lazy" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 629 828"/%3E" style="object-position:50% 50%;transition:opacity 0.5s ease 0.5s;opacity:0" title="Harrison Aquino moved from Florida to Buffalo, New York in 2021."/>Harrison Aquino moved from Florida to Buffalo, New York in 2021. [ Courtesy of Harrison Aquino ]

Aquino, an accountant, and his wife, a law student, decided it was time to look outside of Florida after having their first son.

“The poor school systems in Florida were, for us, a huge thing,” he said. “If you track the schools in New York, even in Buffalo, they’re ranked near the top every year.” Another big factor, which may come as a surprise, is the weather. “Yes, it’s freezing, but we don’t have hurricanes or really any natural disasters here. … We had a hurricane, with a newborn baby, and lost power for like a week.”

After getting priced out of their preferred neighborhoods in West Palm Beach, Tampa Bay and Pensacola, Aquino started considering Buffalo, where he had lived for a while in high school.

“Even in the best neighborhoods (in Buffalo), you can afford a house almost anywhere if you’re a married couple with a decent middle-class income,” he said. “I was making like $65,000 when we moved here and was able to buy a two-unit house for $250,000.” The second unit now has tenants and generates rental income. Aquino also found a new, higher-paying job, in software consulting.

“I like Florida,” Aquino said, “but it just didn’t make sense to stay. Maybe someday we’ll be back as snowbirds.”
