South San Francisco Unified School District schools will be closed Thursday due to the major storm expected to hit the state today.

“According to the National Weather Service, a major storm will hit the Bay Area at 3 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 4,” said Superintendent Shawnterra Moore. “Based on this information and out of an abundance of caution, our district is planning to cancel classes on Thursday, Jan. 5.”

The district serves the communities of Daly City, South San Francisco and San Bruno.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds that could result in flooding and power outages that impact roads and make driving difficult, according to a press release from the district. Consequently, all extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled for today and Thursday have been canceled.

“Jan. 4 is a minimum day, and we highly encourage families to pick up their children from school as soon as possible and to be off the roads and home by 3 pm on that day,” Moore said.

After school care will be available this afternoon for essential workers who are unable to take time off, but there will be no extended care services on Thursday.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — City councilmembers may take a crucial vote Thursday afternoon that will move the city closer or further away from an agreement with the Oakland A’s for a new stadium in the city.

Councilmembers will vote on whether to certify the final environmental impact report, a necessary step toward a new ballpark. The A’s are also considering building a ballpark in Las Vegas and moving the team there.

READ MORE: Injured Oakland Firefighter Remains Hospitalized; 2 Others Released

The $12 billion proposed project in Oakland includes a stadium seating about 35,000 people, up to 3,000 housing units nearby, a hotel with about 400 rooms, about 1.8 million square feet of commercial space, an arts venue for about 3,500 people and about 18 acres of land parks.

The development will sit on about 55 acres at Howard Terminal on Port of Oakland property bordering the Oakland-Alameda Estuary.

“A certified EIR will set the floor for the remaining negotiations, including robust community benefits and a development agreement that ensures that all Oaklanders benefit from this once-in-a-generation development,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said.

City council members will act on three items Thursday. Councilmembers will consider a resolution surrounding the project’s community benefits and compatibility with freight operations nearby.

Then the council will consider whether to certify the final EIR and whether to approve a jurisdictional ordinance describing what the city and what the Port of Oakland will do concerning the project.

Oakland A’s president Dave Kaval said the A’s are hoping the City Council certifies the EIR.

“It’s a big deal,” Kaval said. “Years of work have gone into this.”

Community benefits may include the construction of affordable housing as part of the project, which has been an important issue for city officials, as well as anti-displacement support and traffic congestion mitigation. The project is close to downtown and Chinatown.

Benefits may also include environmental and air quality protections. Kaval has previously said the project will result in cleaner air in West Oakland, the neighborhood nearest to the proposed project and one that has suffered from air pollution from freeways and the Port of Oakland.

Many of the goods traveling through the port go by rail, making it important that the project is compatible with freight operations. Not only will a bicycle and pedestrian bridge be built to accommodate travel over the nearby railroad tracks, but a bridge for vehicles is also planned, assuming the project is built.

READ MORE: San Francisco Mayor Lays Out Timeline For New School Board Members Following Recall Vote

The vote to certify the final EIR requires councilmembers to agree that the report complies with the California Environmental Quality Act, that the impacts of the project have been analyzed and mitigations have been identified and imposed and that the benefits of the project exceed adverse impacts that cannot be mitigated feasibly.

Oakland cannot enter into any binding agreements with the A’s for a new ballpark until councilmembers certify the final EIR.

The City Council will not be considering the construction of a gondola that had been proposed to take people to games at the ballpark. Council members will also not be voting on a development agreement, also known as a binding financial agreement, for the project, and the final binding agreement necessary for the project.

Assuming the City Council approves the jurisdictional ordinance, the city will then take responsibility for Howard Terminal, which is currently on Port property.

The City Council could fail to vote Thursday, moving the vote to March. City officials do not see that as a major stumbling block to getting the project done.

Following the vote on the final EIR, all the remaining approvals come forward together including a general plan amendment and among other things, the development agreement. Summer is the soonest for those approvals, according to the city.

Kaval said the team continues to pursue sites in southern Nevada.

“We remain on parallel paths,” he said, in Oakland and in Nevada until the team gets a new home.

He said the team is “driving forward with great haste” toward that home. The A’s lease at its current home at the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024.

“We’re desperately running out of time,” Kaval said.

The City Council meeting starts at 3:30 pm and the public can watch at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85184082009.

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will announce his retirement from baseball on Thursday, according to a report by The Athletic on Wednesday.

Posey, 34, has played his entire 12-year career in San Francisco, helping the team win three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

The Giants said last month they would exercise Posey’s $ 22 million club option for the 2022 season as long as the veteran catcher wanted to keep playing after a stellar year.

Posey hinted during the playoffs that he might be ready and said he was willing to spend more family time at home with four young children.

“I’m definitely going to take some time with my wife, talk to her, be a full-time father of four for the first time in a while,” Posey said. Take it slowly and see how things play out . ”

Posey chose from the 2020 campaign shortened by the coronavirus to help care for premature adopted twin girls. He and his wife Kristen also have twins Lee and Addison, who have just turned 10.

Posey, whose deal includes a $ 3 million buyout, helped lead the Giants to a franchise record of 107 wins and their first National League West title since 2012 by regularly on the track played and demonstrated its health and durability.

He hit .304 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs, showing that his surgically repaired right hip was finally back to full strength three years after surgery. Posey would be one of six division-era players to hit .300 or better in his final MLB season, according to ESPN Stats & Information Research.

Posey, the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, returned from a devastating leg injury at the end of the 2011 season and won the NL MVP the following year.

He tore three ligaments in his left ankle and broke a bone in his lower leg when he was run over by the Scott Cousins of the Marlins on May 25, 2011. Posey responded by winning the 2012 batting crown and MVP honors while turning the Giants to an a. led the second World Series championship in three years.

Posey advocated rules for better protection against collisions with home plate in order to avoid injuries for both catchers and baserunners.

“I try to stay out of the conversation as much as I can because I know people will connect me with him anyway,” Posey said in January 2014. “I just sit back and let the higher forces hammer it the end. I have my thoughts, but I keep them to myself. “

Posey was selected fifth by the Giants in the first round of the 2008 draft from Florida State, where he played all nine field positions in the same game in May 2008.

“Buster Posey is hanging them up. What an incredible career for a lifelong giant,” former Oakland Athletics left-hander Dallas Braden wrote on Twitter. “The statue is already being built.”

Posey is a lifetime .302 hitter, making him one of six catchers in Major League history to start 1,000 games at the catcher and have a lifetime batting average of .300 or more (subject to inclusion of Negro League stats) .

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Hundreds of people evacuated from a neighborhood near downtown San Jose after a gas line break on Wednesday will not be able to return until Thursday evening at the earliest, the fire department said Thursday morning.

At a morning briefing, the San Jose Fire Department said two gas lines were affected, an 8-inch line and a 12-inch line, and PG&E crews were working to fix both.

Officials said Wednesday that an 8-inch steel gas line ruptured around 10 a.m. in the Race Street and Eugene Avenue area. Gas from the underground leak could not be drained and accumulated underground and posed a greater danger to the environment, said the fire department.

The leak immediately resulted in the evacuation of homes and businesses within a 900-foot radius, with San Jose police going door-to-door alerting residents and businesses. About 325 addresses were affected, SJFD officials said. The gas was turned off for dozens of customers.

The number of BART drivers rose steadily this week, as the agency’s communications team announced on Twitter on Friday, reaching a new high that has not been seen since the pandemic began.

BART recorded 64,070 drivers on Thursday, 16% of the prepandemic. That’s still 84% fewer than the normal number of drivers, but it’s a significant improvement on the 90 +% drop in driver numbers that was seen for most of last year.

On Monday the number of drivers was 59,814, and the number has increased for every consecutive day. This can be explained by several factors: a) Cinco de Mayo happened, b) the weather was pretty nice, and c) San Francisco stepped onto the “yellow” row, which meant that many bars open indoor spaces on Thursday. Also, many people are now fully vaccinated who were less than a week or two ago, and these numbers will only increase in the coming weeks.

“We are preparing to offer quality service again because we know that this will get people back on the train,” says BART. (As you may recall, even before the pandemic started, driver numbers were in a slump, partly due to a general lack of safety and cleanliness.)

Ridership Watch:
Mon: 59.814
Tuesday: 62.731
Wed: 62,920
Thu: 64,070 (84% of drivers before the pandemic and new high).
We are preparing to bring quality service back because we know this will get people back on the train.
A thread from your favorite transit communications team pic.twitter.com/sJk4JKgxsU

– SFBART (@SFBART), May 7, 2021

BART says it will add 26 more trains to the daily schedule on June 15 as the state pledged to open more of the economy. And by August 30, it is said, the service will return to an “almost pre-pandemic level” thanks to the federal government’s economic aid.

“It takes several months of mandatory operator and station agent training [for this]”Says BART in a tweet.” We opened the Berryessa extension [last June] Without doing this, we need to hire / train more. “

The communication team also apologizes for the fact that several station entrances in different locations are closed. They say they know this isn’t very driver friendly, but it does allow them to keep things cleaner and safer for the time being at the open entrances. It’s only temporary, they say, and the entrances will “reopen when the number of drivers increases”.

“We want you to know we’re not holding back,” they tweeted. “The federal emergency grant gives us the confidence to hire more workers and get the trains back on track, and increase the frequency on weekdays and weekends as the weekends are a key part of recovery. So take the train.”

The pandemic is finally loosening its hold on the live music scene and artists are starting to step out again and play for small groups of people, rather than a moment too early when fans crave something to hear their favorite musicians put it down live .

The Tiny Stage of the Ellensburg community radio records steam in an acoustic environment in the 420 building and broadcasts local musicians. So far the audience has been somewhere on the internet, but board member Mollie Edson has postponed the concert series to Thursday night and they’ll be pumping the sound down for Pretty Fair Beer customers.

“Up to 15 people are allowed upstairs, mainly musician friends and crew. But I think playing in front of people will give the musician a better mood, ”said Edson.

On the first Thursday (April 22nd), Roslyn’s singer / songwriter Micah Jabez Heflen, known throughout the Pacific Northwest as Micah J, will perform.

“I look forward to it. I played for ECR years ago and really enjoyed it, ”said Micah J, who is the lead singer / songwriter, guitarist and pianist for the Dynamite Supreme trio. “There is a lot more freedom when I play alone. I know over 400 songs in which the band has 60 in their repertoire.

“I played in front of 6,000 players, but I’m looking forward to a small audience. I tend to get more nervous in front of small audiences than larger ones because it’s much more intimate and they pay more attention. “

The radio audience reaches the valley via the internet, but this will be the first tiny stage show that involves customers on the ground floor and is designed to give the musicians a better energy for the audience, and Micah J knows how to edit a room.

The 34-year-old from Roslyn writes and plays music every day and has remained focused and professional as the pandemic slowed down. He’s been playing a few live shows here and there lately. It helps more to get out, if not for your own mind than for anything else. A good thing about the time in quarantine, it gave him the opportunity to write songs and work some things out.

“I’ve been writing every day and have a lot of new songs that I hope to play (next Thursday). I’ll probably get some of my favorite covers like “Layla” or “What’s Going On?” Play. Maybe it’s not sunshine when she’s gone, he said.

“But I have some new songs like ‘Wonderful World’ and a song called ‘Fantasy’.”

He made it into the second round of the reality talent competition “American Idol” in San Francisco (2013), which was auditioned for “America’s Got Talent”. He made a small recording with the Ellensburg guitarist Al Kaatz, who was on tour with Bonnie Bramlett and Bo Diddley.

He played the Paragon Restaurant & Bar in Seattle, Swiftwater Cellars in Suncadia, the Hotel Interurban in Tukwila and appeared in the Unplugged Sundays Series at the Cornerstone Pie in Ellensburg.

Now he will indulge the radio audience with his first sense of live music and the brighter days to come when he steps onto the small stage in the 420 building.
