NEW YORK (WPIX) – Police officers and a good Samaritan in New York City rescued a man who suffered a possible medical issue and fell onto the city’s subway tracks on Thanksgiving, police said.

NYPD Officers Brunel Victor and Taufique Bokth were conducting a transit sweep at the station, located at East 116 Street and Lexington Avenue, when officers were told by other riders that a man had fallen onto the tracks. Police immediately left the station to re-enter through the northbound side in order to reach the man, officials said.

Bodycam video released by the NYPD shows the officers rushing down to the subway platform and finding the victim on the track, where another rider was already trying to assist. Together with the good Samaritan, police were able to lift the 40-year-old man back to the platform and out of harm’s way.

One of the officers, however, was still on the track after helping to lift the man — even as the uptown 6 train approached, the footage shows.

He is soon helped back up the platform, with just seconds to spare before the train comes into the station.

While waiting for medical help, another responding officer was able to help the victim using his prior medical training. The man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted a video of the rescue on Friday, describing the responding officers’ actions as heroic.

“For the officers who rescued a man from an oncoming train after he accidentally fell on the subway tracks yesterday in Manhattan — courage is second nature. Join me in saluting these great cops,” the commissioner wrote.

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber also issued a statement praising the officers and the good Samaritan as well as state and city officials.

“The joint commitment by [Gov. Kathy Hochul] other [Mayor Eric Adams] to have additional NYPD officers patrol in subway stations and on trains not only helps riders feel safer, but in this case, enabled brave officers and a good Samaritan — in the finest tradition of New Yorkers helping each other — to save a life,” Lieber said.

SAN BRUNO (KPIX) — Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board gave Caltrain the all-clear to begin removing the train that was involved in a fiery crash on Thursday from the tracks in San Bruno.

The removal process started Saturday. Crews were busy on the tracks as the train moved ever-so-slowly throughout the day.

Simultaneously, NTSB investigators continued combing through the wreckage, collecting as much evidence as they can from the crash.

The train will ultimately be moved to a secure location where investigators can continue to examine it, according to an NTSB spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Caltrain service was still interrupted on Saturday. Caltrain continued to operate a bus bridge between Millbrae, San Bruno and South San Francisco.

While some people were aware of the crash and the bus bridge and budgeted extra time for it, others didn’t know about it and were a bit confused by the process.

“I was going to take the train up to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Now I find I have to take a bus. Then I’ve gotta get from the bus back to the train,” said Vince Larkin.

Mike Ruiz didn’t budget the extra time to get up to the city from the South Bay.

“I would describe it as a bit chaotic and hectic,” Ruiz said. “Now I had to reschedule a play that I was going to go watch.”

HAYWARD (CBS SF / BCN) – A person is dead Thursday morning after colliding with a Capitol Corridor train in the Hayward train station area, an agency spokeswoman said.

Capitol Corridor reported the problem shortly before 7:10 am on the 524 train, which runs from San Jose to Sacramento.
Spokeswoman Karen Bakar confirmed the death but had no further details about the person’s death.

All passengers on the train were switched to BART and the train stopped at Hayward station for more than three hours. At about 10:20 a.m. train 524 left again, said Bakar.

Capitol Corridor stated on Twitter that the delay was due to a so-called “intruder incident”. A second tweet said that another train, train 523, stopped at Oakland Coliseum station because of the delays with train 524.

Finally, train 523 was almost an hour late. Just after 9 a.m., the Capitol Corridor said that train 524 was still stopping at Hayward Station because of the incident.
