Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.

Well, there’s a kiosk for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.

“You enter the fare gates and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one minute, a three minute, or a five minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit – known as BART. “You hover your hand over which length you want and it dispenses a long receipt like short story.”

It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March.

Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works, like Rainbows by Erica Johnson.

“[W]e always had this place, our place, our home. Away from the prejudice and the preachers,” Johnson writes. “Away from those who saw our relationship as wrong. Just you, me, and the beach with water as far as the eye could see.”

Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders.

“We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our dispensers and then you would be a published artist and BART helped make you be a published artist and I love that.”

Ridership on transit systems across the country have been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit?

Consolation thinks so.

“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says.

And you’ll never be without something to read.

GILROY (KPIX 5) — California’s high-speed rail project is moving ahead with the approval of the San Jose-to-Merced section by way of Gilroy.

The approval by the state High-Speed ​​Rail Authority board of directors was cheered by Gilroy officials who envisioned building a transit hub around the rail stop.

“I believe this will be transformative for the Gilroy community,” said Mayor Marie Blankley.

The approved alignment for the San Jose-to-Merced segment which will take tracks through the Gilroy station, before heading across Pacheco Pass into the Central Valley.

“This will be a connector for bus and rail to Monterey, to the east, to San Jose and it’s going to really help people who are going to be needing transportation to get to jobs as we increase the housing supply in California,” Blankley said .

Gilroy resident James Suner says it all looks good on paper.

“It would be like having an airport terminal in town, it acts as a hub, brings in transit-oriented development and would be a catalyst for the next century for Gilroy,” he said.

But given the high-speed rail project’s history, Suner is skeptical it will actually happen.

Although construction of rail infrastructure is ongoing in the Central Valley, there are no firm plans for when the San Jose-Gilroy-Pacheco Pass segments would be built.

“High-speed rail is the biggest boondoggle in the history of the state,” Suner said.

Others like bike shop owner Ro Gaeta are hopeful that it will help make Gilroy more of a destination.

“We’re just a little bit of a secret town that people know as for the Garlic Festival, but I think that would be a plus for this town if it actually happens, and it sounds like it eventually will,” Gaeta said.

Mayor Blankley said she’s been told to expect pre-construction activity to begin sometime within the next two years.

Proponents of East Bay Transit are pushing for better transit.

About 50 transit advocates and elected officials attended an event in Latham Square, Oakland Friday to call for the restoration of service and priority for transit. “This is a critical moment for transit in the East Bay. It seems like the recession is forcing us to cut service every ten years. That forces drivers into cars. For our climate and social justice, we need to reinvest in our systems operations with new sources of income, ”said Darrell Owens, vice chairman of the East Bay Transit Riders Union and one of the speakers at the event.

The meeting in Latham Square was part of the larger Transit Month celebrations across the Bay Area aimed at bringing service back to pre-pandemic and beyond. According to a press release from Seamless Bay Area, which aims to integrate timetables and tariffs among the Bay Area’s 30 or so transport companies, the event provided the opportunity to:

• Show your support for public transport for its important role in our communities
• Thank you to the operators and employees for their tireless work
• Call everyone to make more use of local public transport
• Support post-pandemic recovery and the continued expansion of local transport, including redesigning our roads to make local transport a priority.

Supervisor Connie Chan is promoting a completely car-free JFK?

Supervisor Connie Chan hasn’t made many friends in the community for safe roads lately with her support for the closure of the Great Walkway (turning it back into a freeway for de facto exclusive use by motorists). But she posted a letter from JFK Drive this week that looks pretty promising. From lawyer Emily Huston on Twitter:

Streetsblog will keep an eye on this. According to the Twitter thread, several supporters were skeptical of de Young Director Thomas Campbell’s call to ensure “safe access for people with disabilities” for those who “need to drive.” That doesn’t make sense as the museum has underground parking with its own underground street leading to Fulton Street. The garage has 800 parking spaces, including ADA spaces directly in front of the museum entrance. The ban on cars on JFK trips has nothing to do with museum access. But the “Legislative text includes access for motorists to JFK on 8th Ave for ADA parking * on the JFK drive *,” emphasized supporters of the Great Walkway in the thread.

Still, it is a very encouraging sign that the letter appears to be supported by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Walk San Francisco. Let’s hope all the harmful details can be corrected. Make sure to check out the thread.

BART scraps the last of his lemons

BART trains are not all created equal.

BART is reaching certain milestones as it is slowly replacing its old fleet. Last week the agency scrapped the last of its C2 trains, see above. Of all the old BART trains, the C2 bought 30 years ago had a bad breakdown history. BART was happy to see her go.

The last of BEARDThe troubled 1990s wagons known as C2 wagons have left the building. The C2’s had more than their share of issues involving drivers and workers, and were strategically focused on being the first cars in the old fleet to be completely decommissioned. The last one was scrapped in August.

C2s were most likely to have had HVAC failures resulting in hot cars and driver ailments. The driver’s cab was cramped with sliding windows that were prone to failure. Engineers and mechanics had to find solutions to problems such as overshot windshield wipers and passenger doors jumping out of lane, car shutdowns and delays.

BART now has 23 new “Fleet of the Future” trains in operation. As Streetsblog reported in August, the agency is still working with the manufacturer to iron out teething problems with the new fleet.

Transit in San Francisco and across the country was hit hard during the pandemic. This was made worse in San Francisco by lack of maintenance that resulted in subway closings for over a year. Muni is struggling to come back as rider numbers are still at just 224,000 weekday boardings – a third of what it was before the pandemic. With this challenging backdrop, the San Francisco Transit Riders hope that this year’s Transit Month, which is slated for September, will help push Muni’s return a little further.

“Transit lanes set up during the pandemic make journeys faster and more efficient. Headway management has made travel more reliable. Drivers we spoke to in the Mission District said they really appreciate the added service and reliability they have experienced over the past year, ”SFTR’s Cat Carter wrote in an email to Streetsblog.

And from an SFTR publication about the event:

For our sixth annual celebration, we’re switching from a week-long program to a full month as the city is out of the pandemic, students are returning to school, businesses are opening up, and people are returning to their jobs.

The group has already started planning, with the following events set up to start marking in calendars:

• September 8th: Community members and city guides take Muni to the town hall
• 1.-30. September: Ride Muni Challenge for city guides, members and the public to ride along (with prizes!)
• October 1st: Public transport and drivers celebration at the Rider First Awards Party!

Meanwhile, the following graph shows the trend lines for the number of passengers. Note the black and green lines that show the drop in passenger numbers in 2020/2021. And while it is clear that passenger numbers are rising again, things are moving slowly and it remains to be seen how passenger numbers will eventually change.

As the graphic shows, Muni cut things down to its core bus route utility at the start of the pandemic, but they have slowly brought the lines back. The M Ocean View train service between Embarcadero station and Avenues San Jose and Geneva will resume in mid-August. Likewise the 5R Fulton Rapid service from La Playa to the Transit Center Bus Plaza. A full list of scheduled service restores is available on Muni’s website.

The question is whether the passenger numbers will follow. For this to happen, it will not be enough to go back to the pre-pandemic way of doing business.

“When we talk about the future of transit we need to remember that before the pandemic we saw missed trips everywhere, which meant huge travel delays and drivers missed transfers. SFMTA made service promises it couldn’t keep and it looks like they are trying to avoid this mistake when they bring service back. We want all routes to return by winter, but we also need to be realistic about what the service levels will be, ”added Carter. “We’ll talk about it a lot throughout the transit month and beyond.”

The SFTR also has a petition asking the mayor and board of directors to give Muni their own lanes, priority at intersections and the ability to return 100 percent and beyond.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Congestion prices would force drivers to pay a fee to get to the busiest areas of San Francisco during rush hour.

The program, which is currently under investigation, could get traffic moving, increase safety for drivers and pedestrians, purify the air, and promote justice, according to the San Francisco County Transportation Authority.

“As a visitor and as someone who comes here regularly to see the sights, eat in restaurants and just wander around and have fun, knowing that I have to spend money on everything else …” said Ben Flores of Manteca. “And if not me, other families are sure to be.”

According to the city, planning a congestion price program will take at least 3 to 5 years.

Two zones are considered. The most important ones include the Financial District, Chinatown, and SoMa. The larger one is to be expanded to include North Beach, Russian Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf.

There may be a $ 6.50 base fee to attend if you’re earning more than $ 100,000 per year. To be fairer, lower-income drivers do not pay a fee, and people who pay tolls, have a disability, or live in the zone may be eligible for discounts.

The Alameda Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) has placed an order with New Flyer of America Inc. for 20 zero-emission, hydrogen-fuel-cell-electric 40-foot high-performance Xcelsior CHARGE H2 buses. The purchase was made through California’s State Cooperative Procurement, for which New Flyer was selected as the top-rated approved supplier in 2019.

The bus offers up to 350 miles of range on a single refueling; Refill times range from 6-20 minutes, depending on the bus model and operating conditions. The fuel cell bus uses a battery-dominant hybrid architecture in which the batteries are large enough to meet all of the vehicle’s performance requirements, while the fuel cell acts as a continuous battery charger to increase the range of the vehicle.

The heat dissipated by fuel cells is captured by a heat exchanger to complement the HVAC system.

The contract is funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and follows AC Transit’s purchase of 10 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and five battery electric buses from NFI in 2019 and has a proven track record of promoting AC Transit’s Clean Corridors Plan through 2023 ).

The Innovative Clean Transit Regulation of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires all California authorities to switch to zero-emission bus fleets by 2040.

AC Transit, based in Oakland, is one of the largest bus-only systems in America, serving the Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, offering more than 52 million trips annually.

New Flyer is the only manufacturer to offer both a 40-foot and a 60-foot fuel cell electric powered model that is eligible for federal funding.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Public transit drivers in the Bay Area may have noticed less freedom of movement on buses and trains in recent weeks. The number of drivers has steadily increased for many agencies, which coincides with the introduction of the coronavirus vaccine, which has increased driver confidence.

“We are very excited to see what we will see as drivers,” said Glenn Hendricks, Chairman of the VTA Board of Directors.

The number of VTA drivers has still decreased by around 75% compared to the prepandemic. Since the beginning of the year, however, the total monthly number of VTA drivers (system-wide boarding on weekdays) has increased:

• Jan 2021 31,579
• February 2021, 37.665
• March 2021 41,425

On Monday, VTA also announced that it would relax the rules on social distancing.

“It was six feet and now moves to three feet. This will dramatically increase the capacity of our vehicles for the community, ”said Hendricks.

In the North Bay, SMART is expanding train services by ten trips on weekdays and twelve trips on Saturdays. So far there has been no service on Saturday.

BART driver Brittany Bastida has noticed more passengers on the trains, adding that social distancing has become increasingly difficult on the trains.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency reopened all Muni Metro subway stations and on Saturday, for the first time since its closure during COVID, the historic F-Line trams along Market Street and the Embarcadero drove to Fisherman’s Wharf. 19 pandemic.

With San Francisco now in the yellow category and soon all business restrictions by the state will be lifted in mid-June, daily commutes are increasing as workers return to offices with the resurgence of tourist travel.

Transportation officials said drivers are still required to wear masks inside stations and on board trains. The transit agency also announced that the subway tunnels have been modernized and have a working WiFi service.

“To move San Francisco forward, we must do everything we can to get Muni back to full functionality,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed in a statement. “As we reopen more shops and activities, it is important that our transit service can accommodate more passengers and help people get around our city.”

The agency also listened to feedback and decided to create a new temporary bus route – the 36/52 Special. This bus route will serve the hill districts of Forest Hill, Miraloma and Sunnyside on a loop between Forest Hill Station and Glen Park Station.

The N Judah subway service will resume its full route between Ocean Beach and 4th and King Streets (Caltrain). The T Third will be extended to the West Portal and then continued as K Ingleside to Balboa Park Station.

The SFMTA made all changes to the service available on its website.

“Without public transportation, there is no economic recovery,” said Jeffrey Tumlin, SFMTA transportation director. “Our people are committed to keeping San Francisco moving and working tirelessly to bring Muni service back better than ever.”

The Clipper Card can be added to Apple Pay and used with Express Transit features on San Francisco Bay.

The Apple Wallet on the iPhone has support for adding certain transit cards from within the app. These cards can be used in Express Transit mode and reloaded with Apple Pay.

The last card to be added is the clipper card. It is the San Francisco Bay Area transit card of choice and can be used with all 24 transit agencies in the area.

San Francisco is also one of the cities with enhanced transit instructions, so users can find real-time schedules for a bus, train, or ferry that are compatible with the Clipper Card. Just hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near a Clipper reader and you’re done.

Express Transit Mode is a feature that allows users to assign an Apple Pay card for use without authentication. It is necessary to pass through busy areas like a turnstile without having to pause and authenticate the transaction.

Cards used in Express mode are also available up to five hours after the iPhone battery is discharged. This means that the user can use transit services even if the device’s battery is empty.

The Clipper card connects the TAP card and the SmarTrip card in Apple Wallet. Apple maintains a list of all transit cards available for Express Transit mode by region.
