One of the biggest surprises of the offseason is that Jimmy Garoppolo is still a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Garoppolo was anticipated to be traded this offseason but hasn’t seen a trade materialize. This situation muddies the 49ers’ quarterback room, as Trey Lance is still waiting in the wings.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler released an update about Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday. In his latest update, Fowler revealed why Garoppolo remains on the roster. He said:

“The market hasn’t been overly hot right now, largely because of Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery. Teams don’t know when he’ll be able to throw; it might be later in the summer. And so, can he pass a physical? “There are questions that teams are sort of asking right now. We mentioned the Panthers earlier in relation to (Baker Mayfield); they’ve done their homework on Garoppolo too. They’ve looked at all options, and Garoppolo is one. So that’s.” Something to watch down the road. Right now, San Fransisco is prepared to hold on to that $26 million salary, at least as a placeholder for now. They believe they can do all of their business with draft picks and free agents until they sort all of this out.” “I really do think that Jimmy [Garoppolo] would have a starting job right now, if it hadn’t been for the shoulder surgery.” – @AlbertBreer said on the @RichEisenShow.

Albert shared how the shoulder injury complicates things & made teams concerned he’ll miss key off-season time.

“I really do think that Jimmy [Garoppolo] would have a starting job right now, if it hadn’t been for the shoulder surgery.” – @AlbertBreer said on the @RichEisenShow.Albert shared how the shoulder injury complicates things & made teams concerned he’ll miss key off-season time. https://t.co/9YTPC42gqe

Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery couldn’t have been timed worse. Despite reports that he’ll be ready to throw in training camp, teams are skeptical he’ll recover in time to be worth trading significant assets for.

Another juicy piece of information dropped from Fowler was regarding the starting job. Fowler reports that Lance will be the Week 1 starter. fowler wrote:

“Meanwhile, Trey Lance has been working out in the Bay Area. I’m told that he’s got indications, at least informal indications from the team, that he’ll be the guy next year. He’s set to be that. Now, whether that means that they would still keep Garoppolo and that could change the dynamic, possibly. But right now, Lance is going to be the starter.” Here’s the entire quote from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler about #49ers QB’s Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance<svg%20xmlns=%22http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%22%20viewBox=%220%200%2018%2018%22>“/>Here’s the entire quote from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler about #49ers QB’s Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance https://t.co/Io8HONOzlw

Trey Lance as starting quarterback for San Francisco 49ers over Jimmy Garoppolo is significant news

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="lazy-img" width="1920" height="1280" data-img="https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2022/04/e33ad-16502174501837-1920.jpg" alt="San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance" data-img-low="https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2022/04/e33ad-16502174501837-1920.jpg" src="data:image/svg+xml,<svg%20xmlns=%22http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%22%20viewBox=%220%200%201920%201280%22>“/>San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance

Fowler reporting that Jimmy Garoppolo would be the second-string quarterback behind Lance is significant. But if Lance is starting over Garoppolo, why keep Garoppolo as a backup if you have to pay him $26 million in cap space?

The San Francisco 49ers have looming contract extensions due to Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel. Bosa and Samuel are two of the best players in the league at their positions and are each likely to command over $20 million per year.

Moving on from Jimmy Garoppolo gives the 49ers financial flexibility to extend one of them. Understandably, they want compensation for Garoppolo, but eventually, you have to cut your losses. Especially if a player like Samuel is willing to hold out or request a trade due to the lack of a new contract.

First, during Super Bowl week, Hall of Famer and 49er legend, Joe Montana said that Trey Lance “isn’t ready” and that the team should keep quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Last week, Montana’s successor Steve Young, who is also a Hall of Famer and 49er legend, began lobbying for Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady to come on board in hopes that either QB could help bring home the team’s 6th Lombardi Trophy this upcoming season.

While many 49er fans are split on the direction the team should take under center next year, it is quite obvious that it is time to start the Trey Lance era. No disrespect to either 49er legend or their opinions but despite what the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan put out this season, Trey Lance is more ready to play than we have been led to believe, there is a video to support that fact and Kyle Shanahan’s hubris will not allow an established future Hall of Fame QB to take over and lead the 49ers.

“When we were 3-5, that was kind of the breaking point where I knew it was getting close. I know everyone else thought it was there, which I agreed it was getting close to there, but once we won that game and went to 4-5 and ended up winning four in a row, I thought we had a chance…”

Kyle Shanahan made these comments a few days after the 49er season ended with a loss in the NFC Championship game. He made it clear in this statement that everyone in the organization felt that Trey was ready to take over and lead the team. He also alludes to feeling the same way. So why did he stick with Jimmy Garoppolo? Simple, the plan the entire year was to make a run with Garoppolo to increase his trade value. Getting beat out by a rookie with only 17 college starts on the FCS level would not bode well for the 49ers nor Garoppolo, who was auditioning each week for his next NFL contract. Garoppolo’s value increased with every win and he even began to change the narrative of his toughness as he led the 49ers on a deep playoff run playing despite an injured thumb and separated shoulder.

This was not to say that Lance wasn’t ready. This was the 49ers sticking to a plan that would enable them to recoup some of the draft capital spent on Lance. Whenever players were asked about Lance you heard rave reviews and words that made your ears perk up despite the company line of being all in for Garoppolo. One such comment came from All-Pro LT Trent Williams who said, “Trey is an outstanding talent. It’s hard to deny that. When you see him throw the ball, when you see him run the ball, you know that’s a generational talent. ” Generational talent is not something you hear too often as a description of a player’s ability. Being that the quote came from Williams, who is a generational talent himself, it is hard to believe Trey Lance couldn’t have taken the mantle as QB1 during some juncture this season.

As the chatter of Rodgers and Brady began to grow louder early in this off-season, something fishy happened. A cut-up of some “wow” throws from 49er practice leaked. I feel that this is the 49er’s way of showing Lance support despite the churning of the rumor mill. My sentiment comes from the fact that the video is eerily similar to the comments that Kyle Shanahan made after moving up to the third pick in last year’s draft. “If you’re going to draw it up, you’re going to draw the biggest, fastest, strongest, and best quarterback in the pocket… If you can get a guy who is elite with his arm and can play in that pocket and do everything and still run around and make off-schedule plays.” the leaked video is Lance putting all of these qualities on display.

Lastly, it is hard to believe that the 49ers pull the trigger on either Rodgers or Brady despite them being an obvious upgrade to Lance. Why? Because from the moment that Kyle Shanahan was handed the keys to the organization, he has exuded his desire to be the reason the 49ers win a championship. Brady nor Rodgers would fit into that narrative. A Super Bowl victory with either as the team’s QB would give off the perception that they were just as much the reason as he would be for the team hoisting the Lombardi.

Although the Shanahan family has a history with established future Hall of Fame QBs, if either Brady or Rodgers comes to San Francisco the story will be much different this time around. When Mike Shanahan came to Denver and won back to back Super Bowls with John Elway, he was seen as the piece that Elway got over the hump and solidified his place in Canton.

To be honest, you can’t truly blame Kyle Shananahan for wanting to write his own narrative. If Shanahan gets Trey Lance to become a Super Bowl-winning quarterback it would solidify Kyle Shanahan as an elite coach and maybe even an all-time great. It will take multiple championships from the pair to put Shanahan in that category but you have to feel that Shanahan has that much confidence in Lance considering the amount of draft capital he spent to get him. Sorry Rodgers and Brady, it’s Trey Day in the Bay.

Trey Lance on leading the 49ers in 2022: ‘I’m going to be ready to go Week 1, without a doubt’

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, the likely starter in 2022, stopped by NFL Network on Thursday to speak with Andrew Siciliano and Michael Irvin. This offseason, the team will likely transition from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to Lance, who started just two games this past season. Lance is confident he’s ready to take over if that’s what the Niners ask of him. “I’m going to be ready to go Week 1, without a doubt,” Lance said. “I’m super excited for the opportunity. I feel like I learned a lot. I’ll continue to learn. But yeah, excited to get it going again.” Lance was on the sideline when the 49ers fell

49ers’ George Kittle identifies areas where Trey Lance can improve

Trey Lance is just 21 years old and he only has two NFL starts under his belt. His experience will grow, though. It could grow quickly if Lance is the Week 1 starter in September, as most expect him to be. Lance spent his rookie season as Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup, learning from the veteran quarterback, studying the playbook, and running the scout team. Most of his reps in 2021 came during practice. On Thursday, Colin Cowherd of The Herd asked 49ers tight end George Kittle about the differences between Garoppolo and Lance during those practices. “I would say the big difference is Trey’s got a little more zing on [his passes],” Kittle responded. “He definitely has a big arm. He can make throws all over the field, which is really cool to see. jimmy can,

After speaking with players, Joe Montana thinks 49ers’ Trey Lance isn’t ready to play

Sports icon and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana sat down to speak with Kevin Clark of The Ringer at Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LVI. Of course, Clark asked about the Hall of Famer’s former team and the quarterback situation brewing in Santa Clara. The 49ers invested a lot to acquire Trey Lance, trading away multiple first-round picks and a third-rounder, moving up to the No. 3 overall pick to select the former North Dakota State quarterback. Unfortunately for Garoppolo, that meant the end was near for his time in the Bay Area. Last season, Lance started only two games, filling in for an injured Garoppolo. In the end, Garoppolo played through injuries and was part of the 49ers’ impressive playoff run that ended in the NFC Championship Game,

49ers QB Trey Lance on outside noise: ‘I only worry about people in our building’

On Thursday, NFL legend Joe Montana made some headlines, saying he feels that the San Francisco 49ers should hold onto quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo because his successor, Trey Lance, may not be ready to play. “I think they keep Jimmy until you find somebody else,” Montana told Kevin Clark of The Ringer. “I don’t think Trey’s ready to play yet, myself, and after talking to some of the players. It’s one of those things that if you can keep Jimmy healthy, he plays well enough to get you here (the Super Bowl). ” Lance insists he will be ready for whatever the 49ers ask of him, including starting Week 1 of the 2022 season. While not directly asked about Montana’s

With Trey Lance poised to take over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback next season, Niner Noise looks at some potential options to sign as the backup.

With a painful 20-17 loss in the NFC Championship game now in the books, the San Francisco 49ers must now look to the future next season.

Incumbent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will almost certainly be traded to provide some healthy cap relief, and Trey Lance will take over the helm.

That’s right, it’s the Lance era now for San Francisco. Lance will bring a lower floor but a higher ceiling to the position, and his play has undoubtedly improved as the 2021 season went on.

But with Lance moving up to the starting role, someone must now back him up, who won’t be Garoppolo if he’s traded on. The free agency market for a starting quarterback is exceptionally thin this offseason, but there is a bit of a market for potential backups on the way.

As Niners fans have learned a lot from previous seasons, a good backup quarterback is a must for any team. To have a chance of salvaging a season, you need someone who can take over if needed for a few games.

As Lance is a young, raw talent at the position, San Francisco would do best to bring in a veteran presence who can steer the ship if needed.

Luckily there are quite a few players who can be brought in.

Niner Noise will look at five potential candidates to back up Lance, backing up the pros and cons of bringing in that particular quarterback to the team.

Let’s take a look at the first quarterback on that particular list.

As the San Francisco 49ers take on the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round, Jimmy Garoppolo will be acting through pain after torn thumb ligaments and fractured a bone a few weeks ago. It could be his last game as a San Francisco quarterback.

As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport explained, the 49ers plan to move Trey Lance, their first-round pick from the 2021 draft, into the starting position next year, replacing 30-year-old Garoppolo.

“To my knowledge, the 49ers are still looking to pick Trey Lance as their starter in the first round, which means they will likely be exploring trade options for Garoppolo. And for his part, he seems to be really enjoying it and enjoying this moment.”

Going on from Garoppolo could be difficult at first. He’s a consistent option behind centre, although not a standout. He helped lead a strong offense thanks to stars Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. However, Lance has the potential to develop into more than Garoppolo is at the moment. San Francisco makes the smart move to get Lance up and running after a year of being owned by Jimmy G.

It’s a tough break for Garoppolo, who overcame injury to help the 49ers get into the playoffs. He admitted he’s been thinking about his future with the team and now it seems imminent that these playoffs will be his final drive.

While the fate of San Francisco’s season weighs on Garoppolo’s performance against a stingy Dallas defense, the state of the franchise’s future weighs the balance of Lance’s skills.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance became his second NFL star on Sunday against the unlucky Houston Texans.

Lance kicked off a battered Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb injury) in a game the 49ers needed to stay in playoff competition.

The former North Dakota state standout struggled initially, including intercepting a first half in a game where the 49ers were 7-3 behind in the half.

However, Lance scored a huge hit in the second half – he threw two touchdowns on the way to giving San Francisco a 23-7 win.

Trey Lance Statistics: 16 of 23 passing 249 yards, 31 rushing yards, two touchdowns, one interception

The breakout game of the game was that 45 yard touchdown pass to stud wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

All in all, San Francisco won a whopping 278 yards in the second half alone. With this achievement, the 49ers will have more questions than answers in week 18.

It is obvious that Garoppolo would have started on Sunday if he were 100% ready. Reports on Sunday suggested Garoppolo likely needs surgery, which would end the debate.

The background is the 49ers who determine their own fate in the NFC wildcard race. One win against the Rams and they’ll be playing football in the postseason. If not, San Francisco will have to rely on either the Philadelphia Eagles or the New Orleans Saints to lose.

The question now arises as to whether Shanahan will show up with Lance when Garoppolo is ready to leave. Based on what we’ve seen from the embattled head coach, that seems unlikely. He didn’t add much more to the mix in his post-game press conference.

“I think he (Lance) did some really good things. Apart from the bad interception, he protected the ball really well, ”said Shanahan of the rookie quarterback.

Not an ideal scenario for the 49ers. Objectively speaking, with Trey Lance below the middle, this team has a lot more upside potential than Garoppolo. It’s not even near.

For his part, Shanahan will be judged by this decision. With the Rams likely to have something to play on Sunday, the starters will take to the field. Los Angeles has also lost five straight games to the 49ers. The team will want to change that at home in week 18.

If Garoppolo starts and struggles while nowhere near 100%, it will lead to an off-season of questions surrounding a head coach in Shanahan who just clinched his second season winner in San Francisco.

It is certainly a plot to follow in Northern California to move forward.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance could make his second start of the season against the Houston Texans on Sunday. It all depends heavily on the status of starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s thumb. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Garoppolo had suffered a sprained right thumb. The quarterback didn’t train on Monday and the 49ers will re-evaluate him before training on Wednesday. Understandably, Shanahan didn’t give too many details about the injury, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter says it could be “a more significant one.”

The San Francisco 49ers could push forward, with rookie Trey Lance leading the offense on track and possibly into the playoffs. It all depends on Jimmy Garoppolo’s thumb. While head coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the injury, calling it a sprained thumb, NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter painted a more serious picture. Rapoport reported that the 49ers quarterback sustained a torn ligament and a broken bone in his right thumb. Schefter says Garoppolo sustained a rupture and fracture of the UCL. While Shanahan is probably trying to keep her coming

When will Trey Lance finally become the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers?

This question has been popular since the 49ers drafted him to third overall in the 2021 NFL draft. Jimmy Garoppolo and Lance fought at training camp before the incumbent was named a starter.

Then Garoppolo went down with a calf injury and Lance was thrown into the starting XI only to go down with a knee injury. Garoppolo has been the starter ever since, and fans are wondering if Lance will ever see the field again in the 2021 season.

Well, it looks like the 49ers have a plan, even if it’s not exactly encouraging to Lance.

The 49ers have revealed Trey Lance’s blueprint but are waiting to get it out

Everyone has been wondering when – or if – Lance will be back on the field this season. Last weekend, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport answered those questions and revealed the 49ers’ future plans for the two quarterbacks.

“Without a Super Bowl run, which is theoretically still possible at this point in time, this is the 49ers’ plan for the next season: start Trey Lance, trade Jimmy Garoppolo. No surprise, they were pretty open about that. What Garoppolo is doing now is add to the value of the picks the 49ers get on a trade he’s in and they make it more likely that a place he wants to go will want to take him away. “

Ian Rapoport on the 49ers’ plans with Lance and Garoppolo

So there it is, the answer everyone has been waiting for.

With the 49ers still alive in the playoff picture, it looks like Garoppolo will remain the starter. San Francisco has scored three straight wins to sneak into the wild card race, and Garoppolo hasn’t played badly either.

The veteran has 2,342 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions a year. It’s not great, but it’s been good enough to lead the 49ers to victory in the past few weeks.

Lance has only played five games and hasn’t been there since October 10, which was a bit of a surprise given his ability to lead football. Still, it’s Jimmy Time in San Francisco for now.

On the surface, the 49ers are doing everything they can to increase the commercial value of Garoppolo in the off-season. The quarterback market will be fluid as stars like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and possibly Deshaun Watson are available.

Garoppolo would undoubtedly be a lot cheaper than this one, and he can still offer a capable quarterback game. But the 49ers are worried here.

What if Garoppolo leads them to a deep playoff run? As Rapoport mentioned, the plan is to swap Garoppolo apart from one Super Bowl run.

Yes, a run to the Super Bowl is highly unlikely, but crazier things have happened in the NFL – especially this season. You never know, although Deebo Samuel’s injury makes things difficult.

Now turn the script over. What if nobody wants to pay to take over Garoppolo this off-season? That’s a very different scenario and a real possibility.

There are just so many factors and as long as the 49ers win with Garoppolo at the center, things will get more uncertain for Lance’s future.

Pulling Kyle Shanahan away from Trey Lance completely is another problem

Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo | Brian Rothmüller / Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

As long as the 49ers are winning football games, it makes sense to keep Garoppolo inside. On the other hand, leaving Lance completely is a concern.

Before the 49ers matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Shanahan explained why he deviated from the Lance packages (h / t Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports).

“I’m more concerned with telling you the truth. In terms of calling games, we get into a rhythm where we attack a defense and what fronts they play and what covers they play. Every move leads to the next move and you get a feeling for what our players are doing and I for what we are going to do. “

Kyle Shanahan on deviating from Trey Lance packages

Well that’s an interesting tidbit from Shanahan who was full of it when he was talking about Lance.

So it’s not Lance’s fault, but the head coach? That doesn’t sound good to Shanahan in terms of customization.

Ultimately, that doesn’t look at all promising for Lance for the remainder of 2021, or as long as the 49ers continue to stack wins.

It looks like a frustrating season for Lance fans, but a 49ers playoff offer would ease the pain a bit.

The ongoing situation between Garoppolo and Lance needs to be monitored while Jimmy remains in the roster.

The San Francisco 49ers had one of the most intriguing quarterback situations this NFL season. The team has yet to break away from reigning starter Jimmy Garoppolo, although Trey Lance was selected with the third overall selection.

According to a report by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the 49ers are sticking to their stance regardless of how well Trey Lance does on his first start in the big league. Rookie QB will take the reins while Garoppolo sustains a calf injury in the battle against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.

About Rapoport:

“Not only has San Francisco been very clear this week, it has really been since Trey Lance was drafted number three, when the 49ers moved to the top – that’s Jimmy Garoppolo’s job. Trey Lance, to my knowledge, is not expected to keep his job no matter what happens today. If Jimmy Garoppolo is healthy next week, it will be his job. This is something that Kyle Shanahan was consistent with. Trey Lance can’t win the job today. “

From @GameDay Kickoff: # 49ers rookie QB Trey Lance is getting started, but it could only be a week as established starter Jimmy Garoppolo approaches his return. pic.twitter.com/iu9QLaRnYF

– Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 10, 2021

But despite the fact that there is little Lance can do to change his fortune, Kyle Shanahan was still exuberant in his anticipation of the rookie’s maiden start.

“I’m excited to see him play,” Shanahan said of the 49ers’ rookie QB on NBC Sports. “I know he has the ability to do a lot of things. But it will be his first time for the whole game and I’m thrilled to see him play, but I’m not bothering to expect anything. “

The San Francisco 49ers see their future in Trey Lance. After you’ve spent all of your design capital to move up, it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. But aside from a massive change of heart, the present still belongs to Jimmy Garoppolo.

  RELATED PRESS

San Francisco 49ers Rookie No. 3 Pick Trey Lance will make his first NFL start when the young quarterback and his team face the undefeated Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Evidence has been pointing in that direction all week after Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a calf injury in the first half of the Seattle Seahawks loss last Sunday.

Garoppolo has not trained all week, a clear indication that Lance would be called to a 49ers team in desperate need of a win after losing two games in a row.

“Since this is his first start, he’s just trying to give him things he’s comfortable with, things we’ve been through him. You don’t want to sit there inventing too many new things,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan about Lance on Friday: “It’s only a few days to practice and we just want to make sure he’s as comfortable as possible.”

Lance replaced Garoppolo to open the third quarter last week in a 7-7 game at halftime against Seattle. The North Dakota rookie saw San Francisco fall 21-7 in the third quarter before leading two touchdown scoring drives. In the end it was not enough with a 28:21 defeat.

Lance saw his first extended season in the regular season, completing 9-of-18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns without interception. He added 41 rushing yards on seven tries.

Trey Lance gets a real chance of getting a job

Regardless of Garoppolo’s calf injury, it would be foolish to believe that Lance is a stopgap here. Should the young quarterback perform at a high level and lead the 49ers to an angry win over the only undefeated team in the NFL, he’ll most likely be the starter moving forward.

This situation is not too dissimilar to that in San Francisco in 2012. Alex Smith had led a team many were expected to be playoff contenders to a 6-2-1 record that season before facing then-St. suffered a concussion. Louis Rams in week 10.

A young Colin Kaepernick quarterback started next week’s Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears, leading San Francisco to a 32-7 win. The rest is pretty much history. Kaepernick led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance that season, while Smith was evacuated almost immediately after the championship game.

It would be absurd to conclude that the end result here will be the same. But there is a backstory to this whole situation. We know what the 49ers brass said in public. Garoppolo is the quarterback when he’s healthy.

MORE FROM FORBES“Growing Buzz” About The NFL That The San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance Should Startfrom Vincent Frank

But that’s nothing more than a PR spin at this point. The same brass, after there were two future picks in the first round and a move to # 3 for Lance, hinted that Garoppolo’s injury story was the main motive. In his first three full seasons with San Francisco, the Super Bowl quarterback missed 23 out of a possible 48 games. It’s just not sustainable.

At the same time, a strong performance by Lance against one of the NFL’s best teams on the road could start a changing of the guard.

The finances are not complicated

Trey Lance starts for the 49ers via Jimmy Garoppolo. (Photo by Brian Rothmuller / Icon Sportswire … [+] via Getty Images)

  Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Garoppolo plays under a five-year extension of $ 137.5 million he signed in February 2018 and expects to see $ 26.38 million this season. It has a cap hit of $ 27 million in 2022, $ 25.6 million of which San Francisco would save by either trading or releasing the veteran quarterback.

Lance signed a four-year deal for $ 34.1 million last summer. The young signal caller expects to hit $ 6.2 million against the cap in 2021 with a hit of $ 7.75 million next season.

MORE FROM FORBESSan Francisco 49ers on the Forbes NFL Team Valuations List

While unlikely the 49ers could find a trading partner for Garoppolo before the November deadline should he 100% return and Lance keep the starting job. The more likely scenario here is for Lance to perform at a high level, speeding up Garoppolo’s departure from Northern California after the 2021 season.

After all, in the era of wage caps, finances certainly play a role. For San Francisco, this is especially true for stars Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa, who are planning potential expansions after the 2021 campaign.

All things equal, it should be Trey Lance

Trey Lance should be the 49ers starter moving forward. (Photo by Gregory Shamus / Getty Images)

  Getty Images

A simple question must be asked in the field. What does Garoppolo deliver to San Francisco’s offensive that Lance doesn’t? Sure, the 21 year old rookie will make his mistakes. There’s a learning curve that goes from playing college football in small schools to battling JJ Watt and Aaron Donald in NFC West.

Still, it’s not that Garoppolo wasn’t prone to revenue in the last few starts. The week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers (interception, lost fumble) is a prime example of this.

If Lance can continue to make the wow plays that didn’t define Garoppolo’s tenure in Northern California, the mistakes will be easier to handle. It is broadly unacceptable to manage games while flipping the ball, as we saw from Garoppolo.

Regardless of our opinion on these two quarterbacks, one thing is pretty clear. San Francisco didn’t postpone two future first-round picks for Lance just to hold a clipboard. Whether in week 5, later this season, or in 2022, he should be anointed to be a starter. It’s better if a 49ers team that isn’t competing for the championship see what Lance has in them now. Who knows? Lightning could strike a bottle. We’ll see soon enough, Sunday versus Arizona.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite a barrage of seemingly endless questions about his quarterback situation, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan persisted that the plan was to ride with incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo as rookie Trey Lance evolves.

But if Garoppolo misses the games due to injuring his right calf in Sunday’s 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Shanahan will have no choice.

“We’ve been playing rookie running backs since the second game of the first game, and we just got a rookie quarterback,” Shanahan said. “Hopefully Jimmy is better and not as bad as we think, but Trey is here for a reason. You want to give him time, you want him to be completely ready, but you don’t always have that luxury. “

Garoppolo said he would have an MRI on his right calf on Monday morning. The Niners are also concerned about Trent Williams’ right shoulder and kicker Robbie Gould’s right groin, both of which require further testing.

Williams left the game on a cart in the fourth quarter and did not return. Gould’s groin problem occurred during the final warm-up exercises and he missed the game when player Mitch Wishnowsky took over the kick and poke.

Garoppolo said he felt the injury for the first time in the game’s opening streak. He didn’t know who it was, but Garoppolo said it felt like someone stepped on his right calf. During the first half, Garoppolo said his calf continued to cramp and he felt the pain spread to his Achilles tendon.

While Garoppolo doesn’t think it’s as serious as an Achilles tendon tear, he hinted that it might take him some time.

“Right now it feels like just the calf,” said Garoppolo. “I hope it’ll only be a couple of weeks or something like that.”

Even if it’s only a couple of weeks, that would mean Lance would make his first NFL regular season start next week against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals on the road. Which means the Niners would have to make some changes to the game board to cater more to Lance’s abilities and limited experience on the full offensive.

It would also mean the Niners would have time to schedule Lance as a starter, which they didn’t have on Sunday. Garoppolo continued playing on the injured right calf in the first half, and wasn’t disqualified until a minute or two before the start of the third quarter.

That decision hit Garoppolo hard, especially given his long history of injuries and the presence of the highly drafted Lance.

“It’s just tough,” said Garoppolo. “I’ve been in this situation too many times and it’s getting really old.”

Garoppolo finished day 14 of 23 for 165 yards with a touchdown, but started 6 of 6 for 70 yards and a touchdown on the first drive. But Garoppolo said he could feel the calf affecting his throws as the half moved on. He went 8 of 17 for 95 yards and an interception after the first drive.

Lance’s first steady job with the starters got off to a difficult start with a pair of three-and-offs and a few ugly imperfections. But he hit receiver Deebo Samuel for a 76-yard touchdown in his third series on a pass that Samuel was 17.6 yards apart at the time of the catch, the most for a receiver on a touchdown this season, according to NFL Next Gene statistics.

Lance seemed to settle in a little from there. After two scores in the fourth quarter, Lance led another scoring drive, beating Samuel for another score, this time from 8 yards. He finished 9 of 18 for 157 yards with the two values for a pass rating of 117.1. He also rushed for 41 yards on seven tries.

He said that he felt his first extended stint included some good and some bad.

“I’ve missed some big ones, missed some easy ones, missed some checkdowns, just definitely a few games that I want back,” said Lance. “I’ll go back tonight and see it and I think I’ll learn a lot from it.”

Shanahan made a similar assessment of Lance’s performance in terms of the kind of improvement needed if Garoppolo isn’t playing next week and Lance is actually needed for his first start.

“He was thrown in without expecting to come in,” Shanahan said. “I thought he ran the ball well, hit some passes, obviously missed some passes, was in a difficult position there when we were two goals back. He did well to move the chains a few times with his legs . But it looked like this. ” like a typical first game. “
