More than 95% of the city of San Francisco’s employees are fully vaccinated, the San Francisco Department of Public Health said Friday.

The deadline for city workers to get their syringes is November 1, but some agencies working in high-risk environments, such as the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Fire Department, have required that staff be fully completed by Wednesday are vaccinated.

A total of 1,443 of the city’s approximately 35,000 employees remain unvaccinated, which is only 5% of the workforce. In San Francisco as a whole, 75% of residents are fully vaccinated while 80% received at least one dose.

Of SFPD in particular, around 5% of employees, including 76 police officers, remain unvaccinated. SFPD has 2,117 employees. 35 fire brigade workers and 39 sheriff workers are also unvaccinated. The FDF did not immediately provide a further breakdown by department.

Employees who do not get vaccinated on time will be put on paid administrative leave until the start of the regular hearing, the SFDPH said. Further hearings will decide whether the unvaccinated person’s employment relationship will be terminated.

The SFDPH allows employees with certain religious beliefs or medical problems to apply for waivers from the vaccination order. So far, around 800 vaccine exemption applications have been made.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented the city, its employees and residents with unprecedented challenges,” said the SFDPH. “To protect the health and safety of citizens and employees, the city has issued its vaccination guidelines.”

Nearly 190 San Francisco police and firefighters were still not completely unvaccinated hours before the midnight deadline for these city workers to shoot.

Police Chief Bill Scott told the Police Commission on Wednesday evening that 118 sworn police officers – 5% of all sworn officers – remain unvaccinated and 61 are partially vaccinated. Another 31 non-sworn employees are unvaccinated and 11 partially vaccinated.

A spokesman for the police department said Thursday morning that the numbers are “likely” to change, but has not yet been able to give an exact number. It was not immediately clear how many had not reported their vaccination status, which was also required by the deadline.

The police have 2,835 employees, including 2,122 officers.

The San Francisco vaccination mandate, the first and one of the strictest in the country, aroused some opposition from unions, particularly from law enforcement. Workers in high-risk environments such as hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters faced a vaccination mandate as early as September 30, while the rest of the city’s 35,000 workers must be vaccinated by November 1.

The police are prepared for the possibility of operating and continuing to provide critical services without unvaccinated employees.

Two weeks ago, Police Chief Bill Scott said in an email that the department would be shifting staff to remove unvaccinated workers from patrol, where they regularly interact with the public, and said the department would continue to provide vital services without the unvaccinated Officials could provide.

Of the 366 San Francisco Police Department employees not vaccinated against COVID-19, 193 have requested religious exemptions to avoid the required vaccines, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

In June, San Francisco became the first major city to announce that approximately 35,000 city employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or risk losing their jobs, the Los Angeles Times reported.

All city employees must be vaccinated by October 13th. People who work in high-risk environments such as prisons or nursing homes must be vaccinated by September 15th.

At the end of last month, KBCW reported that 88% of city employees had already been vaccinated. About 2% did not report their vaccination status and 10% said they were not vaccinated.

KGO reported that the measure has been pushed back by city workers, with some city officials saying they would step down when the policy goes into effect.

In August, KGO reported that the city recommended eight officials, seven firefighters and two deputies to be suspended without pay for failing to reveal their vaccination status.

The San Francisco Human Resources Department reported on Chronicle 157 that police officers’ requests for religious exemptions have been tentatively approved. The department received a total of 296 requests for exemption from religious affiliation from employees of the city, 193 came from the police.

At the time of publication, DHR did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

“The only way out of the pandemic and to protect our employees is to make sure that as many people as possible are vaccinated against COVID-19,” Mawuli Tugbenyoh, head of politics at the DHR, told the Chronicle: “The damage that COVID-19 did to our communities, health and livelihoods is now preventable. “
