SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Andersen — the leader in tax, valuation, financial advisory, and related consulting services — and The University of San Francisco (USF) have extended their partnership to create The Enterprise MBA program, in which eligible Andersen employees can earn an MBA in three to five years, fully funded by Andersen on behalf of its employees. Modeled after the USF Masagung Graduate School of Management’s rigorous Part-Time MBA offering, the new program offers a standard MBA curriculum with courses tailored to address the specific professional development needs of Andersen employees in today’s complex, global business environment.

The new program is available to employees of Andersen member firms and collaborating firms, starting with US employees and rolling out worldwide in 2023. Full- and part-time Andersen employees from senior associates to partners — regardless of tenure — are eligible for the program. Participating students must take three to four courses per year, delivered online and asynchronously, to complete the program requirements in five years. The first cohort of nearly 50 students started the pilot program in June 2022. USF welcomed 14 new Andersen students to the program in November 2022 and is targeting another 25-50 for January.

“Andersen strives to be the best professional services firm in the world and this new program is consistent with our dedication to continuous professional development and stewardship,” said Mark Vorsatz, CEO of Andersen. “To be the best in our industry, we have to attract and retain the best talent — that’s why we’re so committed to investing in our people. Working closely with the innovative educators at USF, we’ve built a customized program that reflects and enhances the work Andersen employees do on behalf of our clients every day. As the program grows, we expect it to be a unifying employee experience across our practice areas and global offices.”

Andersen’s offering is unique in the degree to which the firm was involved in course development, and the fact that the program is global in nature, fully funded by the firm, and does not have any kind of clawback, employees should choose enrolled in the program to leave the firm.

“Andersen’s culture is what keeps us together and what sets us apart,” continued intent. “Our investment in our people at all stages is just one component of how we are building and maintaining that culture.”

A Customized MBA to Meet Andersen’s Business Needs

Andersen and USF’s Masagung Graduate School of Management worked together to create a customized program, including content, delivery, modality, structure and timing, and even jointly creating a special elective class on the importance of company culture. In addition, in certain classes, Andersen senior staff may serve as adjunct professors to aid in instruction. Three trimesters of courses are offered each year: from early January to mid-to-late February; from early May to the end of August; and from early-November to mid-December. Given Andersen’s tax-centered business, program courses are offered outside of the busy tax seasons between March 1 and April 15 and between September 1 and October 15.

“This a truly unique and collaborative program and the close partnership between USF and Andersen sets a new standard for the future of corporate education,” said Otgo Erhemjamts, Dean of the School of Management at USF. “It demonstrates how educational institutions and companies can come together to address skill gaps and prepare organizations and their personnel for the rapidly evolving business world.”

Andersen and USF started their collaboration in 2014 when the organizations first partnered to provide Andersen personnel the opportunity to earn a Master of Laws in Taxation (LLM) or a Master of Legal Studies in Taxation (MLST) from the University of San Francisco School of Law . To date, more than 120 employees from 11 countries have graduated from those programs.

“The University of San Francisco, founded by the Jesuits in 1855, has long worked with the business community in and beyond the City to strengthen their talent pool,” stated USF President Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, SJ “Our work with Andersen has been a terrific iteration of this work. The alignment of our cultures makes this excellent teaching/learning experience possible. We are especially grateful to Mr. Vorsatz for envisioning this dynamic partnership.”

Andersen Global is an international association of legally separate, independent member firms comprised of tax and legal professionals around the world. Established in 2013 by US member firm Andersen Tax LLC, Andersen Global now has more than 13,000 professionals worldwide and a presence in over 390 locations through its member firms and collaborating firms.

A program to alleviate teacher shortage in San Francisco has lost a key partner after fraud allegations that resulted in a $ 2.5 million settlement.

The University of San Francisco pulled out of the San Francisco Residency Program, launched in 2010, last month to help educators in education settle into classrooms during a teacher shortage.

Participants spent five hours a day in a classroom in the San Francisco Unified School District for the year, earning a scholarship, and getting used to the system as they pursued their teaching credentials. The program was announced to attract and retain educators with cultural literacy to mentor students in San Francisco, an ongoing problem in a high cost of living city.

But in March, USF announced internally that it would part ways with the program, the auditor learned.

The change comes after USF agreed to pay the federal government $ 2.5 million last May in a settlement with the U.S. Attorney General on fraud allegations. Now the university is at odds with SFUSD over how much of this settlement the district itself might have to pay.

USF called his departure a “difficult decision” and cited disruptions from the pandemic.

“Looking ahead, we are taking the time to decide if and how we would redesign the residency program with SFUSD,” USF spokeswoman Kellie Samson said in an email to the auditor.

The allegations of fraud surfaced when a whistleblower alleged that then program director Jonathan Osler falsified timesheets between 2014 and 2016 to get funds from AmeriCorps grants.

In a report to Congress released in September, the Federal Inspectorate found that USF had forged more than 1,500 timesheets and certified 61 awards during that period through its director, who received the grant. The Timesheets qualified USF to receive more than $ 1.7 million in grants through the Corporation for National and Community Service known as AmeriCorps.

According to the recommendation of the CNCS-OIG, AmeriCorps excluded Osler from the federal government on January 27th. This means that Osler can neither apply for or receive federal contracts nor act as a representative for other contractors until February 2024. Any affiliation with an organization that does business with the government must be “carefully considered”.

Osler is currently the Senior Director of Schools, Programs and Learning for the Oakland Public Education Fund, which works with the Oakland Unified School District. He joined the nonprofit as development director in May 2018 and rose to his senior position in October, according to the fund’s website and Osler’s LinkedIn.

“I firmly believe in what we wanted to achieve at SFTR: ensure that students from underserved schools have access to well-prepared teachers from communities like yours,” Osler said in an email. “I also believe in the collaboration we have had and hope that it can be repeated in other locations in the future.”

SFUSD spokeswoman Laura Dudnick said the district has reviewed its systems and is now allowing residents to receive a cost of living scholarship by participating in the program rather than based on specific activities recorded on a timesheet.

“One of the whistleblower’s complaints related to irregularities in time reporting for the AmeriCorps Grant, which was issued to SFTR partner USF,” Dudnick said in an email. “The timing irregularities related to a practice allegedly run by an employee overseeing the SFTR program. This person is no longer an employee of the district and has no participation in the SFTR program. ”

USF asked SFUSD to pay part of the settlement. It’s unclear how much USF is looking, but the demand comes at a time when the urban school district faces a projected structural deficit of $ 112 million by next year.

“The university has asked SFUSD that SFUSD pay its fair share of the settlement,” Samson said in an email last month. “SFUSD previously agreed to pay its fair share. SFUSD has not yet fulfilled its obligation. The matter is in formal dispute resolution. “

“The district was not a party to the dispute that led to the settlement,” said Dudnick. “This litigation was against USF, the Americorps scholarship holder. The district has not agreed to contribute to the settlement and does not currently expect to contribute. “

When the residency program was launched, the city made an effort to attract and retain educators for the urban school district. A 2015 report showed that 80 percent of program graduates remained in SFUSD after five years, compared to 50 percent of fellow SFUSD teachers and 20 percent of Teach for America graduates in the district.

The problems of the program and the loss of its retention rate benefits come at a time when SFUSD is already grappling with the structural deficit, insecure enrollment due to the pandemic, and ongoing work to get all students to a regular by the fall semester Bring back schedule. Layoffs are not expected because the district failed to issue notices by the required March deadline.

The program, now referred to as the Teaching Residency Program in SFUSD, has 23 residents from Stanford University and the USF this year. Dudnick said the program expects six to 12 residents from Stanford next year, plus six to 15 residents from other residency programs at San Francisco State University / Trellis and New York University.

United Educators of San Francisco President Susan Solomon, who served on the residency program advisory board, found the timesheet fraud “disappointing” and “surprising”. However, she hopes the district can stick to the program.

“Residency programs are a model program to really prepare people to become teachers,” said Solomon. “These are people who really learn, not only do excellent exercises, but get to know the school district really well and then commit to staying. It’s an excellent program that we fully support. “

When asked about rebuilding confidence in the future program, current director Jennifer Steiner said the deal came a long time ago and she feels that the program has since made headway.

“I don’t know that there is necessarily a trust problem on the table,” said Steiner. “We will maintain the integrity of everything that was good about the program. If USF decides to come back to the table, they are welcome. “

From Lovepreet Dhinsa

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin and USF School of Law Professor Bill Ong Hing had a live discussion on Facebook this week about the long history of anti-Asian racism in the United States.

USF Professor Hing currently teaches at the USF School of Law, has served on the city’s police commission committee, and has successfully published several books on racism and immigration.

Both Boudin and Hing expressed condolences to Daunte Wright’s family.

DA Boudin stated: “We are still watching the trial of George Floyd and now, not far from there, we have another young black person who died by the police. We share your pain. Something has to change. “

Prof. Hing also expressed his sadness and anger over the shooting and wanted to point out the Taser’s apology. Hing, a former committee member of the city police commission, led the opposition efforts against the opposition to the adoption of a taser.

In large part, he attributed the tool’s inefficiency to half the time it didn’t work, and found law enforcement to use this as an excuse far too often.

The conversation then shifted to the cause of renewed attention and increased hate crimes against the AAPI community. Boudin asked Hing to address the increase in these incidents.

Hing firmly believes that the cause of this boom lies in racism and hatred. He pointed to the APPI hate violence program which has followed these actions in which the The program has measured 3,000 incidents over the past six months.

He attributes this boom in large part, but not entirely, to President Trump’s rhetoric at the start of the pandemic when he began to refer to the pandemic as the “China virus.”

Hing believes that some people use this rhetoric as a license to act, while others, who may be unfamiliar with what is happening, might see a country leader saying these words and be forced to respond to them in a similar manner .

Presenter Rachel Marshall spoke briefly about the implications of these incidents for fueling division and undermining public safety. With this in mind, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, co-sponsored by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, recently passed Law SB 299 to ensure that victims of police violence are compensated and well protected.

District Attorney Boudin also stressed that these incidents are being taken extremely seriously with a policy of zero tolerance for racist crimes.

Boudin acknowledged that “the attention we pay to these incidents is necessary but not new. This racism, violence and bigotry is a long-standing problem and more effective tools are needed to address these problems. “

Prof. Hing was asked by the moderator to elaborate on this longstanding issue of racism, and he admits that while this awareness of change is new, racism and hatred towards these communities is not.

In 1982, Hing cited the Chinese Exclusion Law, which stopped the influx of Chinese workers into the United States. However, many people forget the violence that led to this law. In the bay, several grassroots organizations and coalitions have started an area specifically geared towards AAPI communities.

Professor Hing also referred to the 88 Chinese minors who were murdered in California that same year alone.

Similarly, in Antioch in the 1870s, many homes of Chinese immigrants had been burned down and many Chinese were driven from the city where they could be monitored.

Following these incidents, Professor Hing referred to a US spy plane that had landed in China and that the plane would return. Because of this, many began boycotting Chinese restaurants and discriminating against Chinese artists, often imitating their language and making fun of them.

Hing also noted the murder of Vincent China in Detroit at the hands of other auto workers over competition concerns and misguided beliefs about killing a man who was “Asian looking”. Hing stated that these competitive crimes were quite common as many Asians are alleged to be stealing jobs or opportunities.

Citing these references, DA Boudin mentioned that because of the “long and embarrassing history of the United States”, Chinatowns were created across the country in solidarity and as a safe haven.

Prof. Hing agreed with Boudin when he stated that “while some Chinatowns were herded into these communities, others created them out of solidarity”. Hing agrees that Asian people have asked for help here because they couldn’t trust law enforcement to protect them. He cited a law by the California Supreme Court that prevented Chinese immigrants from giving evidence in court.

The conversation then shifted when DA Boudin began asking Professor Hing about the challenges and opportunities we are currently facing in protecting our communities in San Francisco.

Professor Hing stated, “It starts with people like you. You have become much more than this event. It begins with leaders, elected officials, and other community leaders. And these leaders need it to speak out against these incidents. “Professor Hing specifically mentioned the importance of advocating for individuals, whether it be against a friend joking about racial groups or for examples of what our community is about.

The moderator then asked District Attorney Chesa Boudin about the challenges he faces in protecting these communities in San Francisco. While Boudin didn’t want to point out all of the efforts made this year, he focused on the priorities his office has right now, including voice access, trust building / developing and ongoing communication.

District Attorney Boudin emphasized the importance of helping Asian communities with language barriers, whether it be with what happens in a courtroom or getting help when needed. To further these priorities, he is hiring more Chinese-speaking staff and working to ensure that all of the services and resources provided by the office are accessible.

Boudin also stressed the need to build and develop trust.

Compared to a time when Chinese Americans could not testify in court and were not protected by law enforcement, he emphasized the importance of informing the community that his office is available to them and that Asian Americans who seek help from Chinatowns can also seek help in his office.

Boudin also stressed the importance of continuous communication to make sure people actually understand what the office is doing for them.

Boudin said he believes there is a lot of misinformation out there about what his office is doing or what cases they are pursuing; However, to advance these priorities, he participates in weekly roundtables with Chinese news outlets and community leaders.

Boudin stated that he is proactively reaching out to people in the community and working to improve communication efforts. He also stressed the need to work on crime prevention, as victims already suffer losses if a racially motivated crime is committed. Boudin also supports the pursuit of intercultural understanding and direct collaboration with the community.

Boudin also announced an upcoming summit on May 14th where he will join fellow community members and critical thinkers on these issues. Boudin mentioned the importance of community feedback in what they want to see from the office.

Hing acknowledged that repeating history is a central theme in order to be aware and to be proactive in advocating change. He looks forward to working with Boudin’s office and having future discussions.

Closing this discussion, Boudin said that these discussions will take place every two weeks with various members of the community featured on the District Attorney’s Facebook page because, although “we have failed in the past, we cannot allow this to happen together. We have to come together to fight it. “
