Julie Andrews has revealed how she felt when she met her Mary Poppins co-star Dick Van Dyke for the first time.

Andrews, 88, starred opposite Van Dyke, 98, in the classic 1964 movie musical. She opened up about the memory during the two-hour CBS special “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” which aired Thursday (Dec. 21).

“If I remember correctly, it was very hot in early September and the Disney team had built a large stage out in the back of the studio and created a shade roof out of a huge tarp,” the Sound of Music actor explained. “When I arrived on the first day, Dick was already working with the choreographers and dancers.”

She continued: “I had never done a film before, and I had given birth to my beautiful daughter Emma almost six weeks earlier, and I quickly realized that I had better pull up my socks and get in shape.” I found It's pretty daunting, I can tell you that.

Andrews remembered Van Dyke as “young, as fit as can be and truly stunning to look at,” adding that the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor “couldn't have been kinder, genuinely sweeter and more helpful.” I like to think so “We hit it off straight away.”

“It was so nice to see him imitating the animated penguins or trying to ride the pony on the carousel. Become a magical chimney sweep. Actually, I think it was a very enjoyable film for the entire company,” she said.

“Mary Poppins” star Dick Van Dyke (Getty Images)

Andrews' first film role as the eponymous Mary Poppins, a magical nanny who brings fun and imagination into the lives of the two Banks children, earned her an Oscar for Best Actress. The next year she received an award for her starring role in 1965's The Sound of Music, followed by a third nomination in 1982 for the comedy musical Victor/Victoria.

Van Dyke, who played Bert in the original, returned for the 2018 sequel Mary Poppins Returns to play Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of Van Dyke, the greedy director of London's most important financial center also starred in the 1964 classic.

In early February, the Bye Bye Birdie actor revealed his secret to staying so young. “Having a beautiful young woman half my age taking care of me—that works!” Van Dyke told Yahoo!.

He credited his wife, 52-year-old makeup artist Arlene Silver, with helping him maintain a “positive attitude” and go to the gym “three days a week” to work out.

“I encourage everyone to do that because that’s how people age,” he said. “It's just a matter of stiffening up and not exercising the muscles and lungs. Practice is the answer.”

Dick Van Dyke was one of the 2021 Kennedy Center Awards honorees. The film and television legend's career was showcased as he accepted the award alongside fellow honorees Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks and Midori.

At age 95, Van Dyke has a long resume in the entertainment industry dating back to the late 1950s, according to IMDB. One of his most popular roles was in the 1964 film “Mary Poppins,” in which he played both the role of jack-of-all-trades Bert the chimney sweep and the role of bank boss Mr. Dawes.

In an interview with CNN, Van Dyke once said “Mary Poppins” was his favorite role in his six-decade career. “I probably enjoyed the role in Mary Poppins the most,” he said. “It was so much fun. That's my favorite movie too.”

The Oscar-winning classic film was a great example of Van Dyke's singing and dancing skills.

Here's a look back at some of Van Dyke's most famous appearances in Mary Poppins.

“Pavement Artist/Chim Chim Cher-ee”

One of the most famous songs from “Mary Poppins” is “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” the famous duet by Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. But Van Dyke also performed a solo version of the song while his character did his chalk drawings on the streets of London.

The character Bert didn't exist until composers Robert and Richard Sherman wrote the song. They were inspired by a sketch of a whistling chimney sweep and initially thought Mary Poppins would sing the song to the children, but Walt Disney intervened and suggested that it would be better to create a new character.

“Walt said, 'You know, we've got this guy who paints pictures on the sidewalk, and we've got a one-man band, and we've got a guy who flies kites – why don't we make them all one guy and call him Bert? and he will also be the chimney sweep?” Robert Sherman once said, according to SongFacts.

“Step in Time” with the chimney sweep cast

Who can forget “Step in Time,” Van Dyke’s famous number featuring Bert and the other chimney sweeps dancing and singing on London rooftops? It was one of the liveliest routines in the film.

More than 55 years later, Van Dyke's legendary “Mary Poppins” performance was also remembered when professional dancer Derek Hough performed a version of “Step in Time” in his honor.

“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” with Julie Andrews

One of the hardest song titles to pronounce – let alone spell – “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” made its debut in the Mary Poppins story when the Sherman brothers adapted PL Travers' book into a feature film, according to BBC News. The magical nanny Mary and her chimney sweep buddy recited the tongue twister word several times in one of the film's most famous sequences.

Richard Sherman once said the word came about the same way he and his brother invented words as children.

“We used to come up with the big double-speak words, we could think of a big offensive word for the kids and that's where it started,” he said. “We started with 'hideous,' and then you can sound smart and be precocious at the same time. We had “precocious” and “hideous” and we wanted something super colossal and that's cheesy, so we took “super” and doubled over to go “califragilistic,” which means nothing, it just came out that way. That’s what we did for two weeks in a nutshell.”

“I Love to Laugh” with Ed Wynn and Julie Andrews

Van Dyke showed off his Cockney accent more than his singing skills in the “I Love to Laugh” sequence. He told CNN that he focused primarily on dancing for the film, and the filmmakers gave him a vocal coach, who turned out to be Irish.

“And his Cockney wasn’t much better than mine,” Van Dyke said.

“While I was taking the picture, no one was making fun of me about the accent, but I definitely took it in afterwards,” he added.

Of the flights he took in the film – and particularly during this song – Van Dyke told the New York Times: “We had to fly all the time. Once [on the original movie] We were all up there playing “I Love to Laugh” and they were on their lunch break and everyone left and forgot we were DJing there. It must have taken 15 minutes for someone to notice and come and abandon us.”

In 1964, Dick Van Dyke played the role of chimney sweep Bert in the popular film “Mary Poppins” alongside his good friend and legendary actress Julie Andrews. Based on the popular novel series by Australian writer Pamela Lyndon Travers, the film has entertained generations with its imaginative portrayal of the magical Mary, an English nanny who must help two children and their neglectful father.

However, the highly entertaining and entertaining film found itself in some controversy in 2019 when Daniel Pollack-Pelzner criticized the film for perpetuating racist stereotypes in a story for The New York Times. He particularly pointed to a scene in which Mary and Bert dance with chimney soot on their faces, which he said resembles “blackface” – a callback to 19th-century minstrel shows in which white performers imitated black people.

He wrote about the racist undertones in the film and drew a connection to Travers' novel series, which featured multiple uses of blackface and racial slurs. The author claimed that black children who read her book liked the fact that some of the characters spoke in a stereotypical Southern American dialect. However, when the San Francisco Public Library banned the book, citing its alleged racially offensive material, Travers rewrote the questionable passages in 1981 so that her books would not be hidden from potential readers.

Smoke plumes filled the air in downtown San Francisco on Thursday evening, as firefighters quickly put out a vehicle fire.

The fire began shortly after 5 pm, as flames covered a turquoise van on the corner of Fifth and Mission streets. It quickly spread to a bus shelter right by where the vehicle was parked.

It was extinguished by 5:25 pm Access to Fifth Street was closed, but vehicles were seen driving on Mission Street.

It is unclear whether any passengers were inside the vehicle, though San Francisco firefighters were seen using equipment to open the vehicle after the fire was extinguished.

John Baxter, public information officer for the San Francisco Fire Department, said that there were no major injuries, and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Elsewhere in the Bay Area, there were at least two separate vehicle fires in Oakland — one on Highway 24 and Broadway Avenue in Oakland that was caused by a vehicle accident, and another on 34th and Wood streets. The latter fire killed two dogs and left three RVs fully burned, KTVU reported.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – City guides, school staff and students celebrated the Bowes Center of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on Friday with a first look at the venue and facilities, plus a special performance by cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

“This is an incredibly artistic city compared to where I come from, it’s unimaginable,” said Jess Konye, a technology and applied composition student at SFCM. “When I came back everything is different now. The space means that I can go to school anytime and whenever I want, and that makes me a better musician. “

The Ute and William K. Bowes, Jr. Center for Performing Arts is 165,000 square feet and rises several floors above Van Ness Avenue in the Civic Center. More than $ 130 million has been raised for this project.

“One of the biggest challenges we face in San Francisco is making housing affordable,” said San Francisco Mayor, London Breed. “This project offers students the chance to be housed and not worry about whether or not they have a roof over their heads while they try to study and protect their craft.”

It will host around 400 students, including Konye, who says having access to practice rooms at any time of the day will help her grow as a student in a way she never could before living here. Balancing her schedule and school commitments was a challenge, and she eventually left town during the pandemic.

“We didn’t want to be an obstacle for people who wanted to bring their families with them to hear and experience music,” said SFCM President David Stull.

The venue will offer 90 percent of its concerts to the public for free. The acoustics in the event hall on the 11th floor eliminate all noise from the busy streets below.

“The Bowes Center was built with the future of audio and composition in mind, and the facilities here really support that mission,” said Taurin Barrera, executive director of the Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) program.

TAC and the facilities used by SFCM students include new studios to help students become composers of the 21st century, Barrera said. Your skills will help them work on films, video games, and new media. In addition to music composition, you will also learn computer programming and other technical skills.

“The students had tears in their eyes when you hear how it sounds in this room, when you hear your own music recorded, you really feel the power of the sound in the studio,” he said.

Yo-Yo Ma performs at the Bowes Center. (CBS)

Yo-Yo Ma performed for the audience on Friday morning and spent part of his day working with students in a master class in the afternoon. He said he was impressed with the clarity he heard from his performances at the venue, and also how this will help students find their own creativity.

“If there’s one thing I love about what an institution like the San Francisco Conservatory can do with this new space – the Bowes Center – is create a safe space,” he said.

Located near other arts organizations in the Civic Center that work with the school, the Bowes Center helps students connect and collaborate with other artists in the city. The principals say they want the character of San Francisco to be present throughout the venue, including city hall views from the performance hall and rooftop.

“We can be rooted in the community, interact with the community, interact with the musicians there in these rooms,” Konye said. “I think for me as a student this really means the beginning of a new era for music here at the Conservatory.”

An open day for the public with guided tours and performances throughout the day is planned for February 12, 2022.

Bright blues and sunny yellows swirl through the room as visitors sit spellbound as Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork floats across the walls of the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in San Francisco.

Since it opened last March, the attraction has drawn the attention of many. The immersive Van Gogh exhibition is a unique way to see some of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings.

When entering the exhibition, visitors enter Goh’s painting. You can wander through the sunlight from “Wheat Field with Crows” and the shimmering lights from “The Starry Night”.

The exhibition uses projectors to throw his paintings on the walls of the cavernous venue. Most notably, the artwork is animated and arranged in a presentation accompanied by music.

“I like the picture with Iris. First the green stems came and then the flowers and it looked like the whole room was in bloom, ”said Julia Williams, a visitor.

Visitors reported pleasant experiences at the event and were blinded by the liveliness of the art.

“Van Gogh saw the world in such a shining light, despite struggling with depression. His paintings are so colorful, ”said Sarah Ricchiuti, a local artist.

Van Gogh used the Dough technology to give your pictures a 3D effect. This technique gives visitors a sense of how much paint Van Gogh used even on a flat surface of the walls.

“My own pictures are 3D and I want pictures that you can step into. With the immersive exhibition, you paint with Van Gogh, ”said Ricchiuti.

Corresponding Van Gogh Exhibition San Francisco, 60,6000 video frames were used to animate Van Gogh’s paintings. The exhibition’s creator, Massimiliano Siccardi, worked with Vittorio Guidotti, Creative Director of Animation, to create the swirling brushstrokes. Thanks to the 90 million pixels in the projection, Van Gogh’s famous brushstrokes are clearly visible.

Music accompanies the projections and flows with the paintings and lets the viewer feel Van Gogh’s emotions through his art.

the Playlist includes artists such as Edith Piaf, Blavatsky and George Handel, which reinforces the immersive nature of the exhibition. Luca Longobardi was the leading composer of the exhibition.

“I thought the extra music made it a lot more fascinating. It caught my attention. The playlist was very well put together, ”said Ruth Casab, a sophomore at Carlmont High School.

The Van Gogh exhibition began in Paris, where it attracted 2 million visitors before expanding to locations around the world like San Francisco. Ricchiuti was encouraged to see so many people at an exhibition about Van Gogh.

“As an artist, it is very moving to see how other people experience art. It’s comforting in this crazy world that people still love art, ”said Ricchiuti.

The San Francisco immersive exhibition is open until January 3, 2022 at SVN West.

Dick Van Dyke has announced that he would like to be knighted.

Speaking at the 2021 Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony, which honored the 95-year-old Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor with a Lifetime Achievement Award, when asked what’s next, the movie star replied, “I think the next one is a knighthood. “

The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony was held in Washington, DC, in early May, and Dick was in high spirits as he walked the red carpet with his much younger wife, Arlene Silver.

Next a knighthood! Dick Van Dyke, 95, has announced that he would like to be knighted

According to Der Spiegel, Dick quickly raved about his lifetime achievement award.

He said: “The recognition from your colleagues is always the icing on the cake. How did I get a Kennedy Award? I never trained or did anything. I just enjoyed it. ‘

The Hollywood icon also joked, “I just turned 95 so I’m happy to be anywhere. Had I known I would live that long, I would have taken better care of myself. ‘

At this month’s ceremony, the film, television and Broadway star was joined by other cultural luminaries, including influential folk singer Joan Baez, actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, violin virtuoso Midori and country music superstar Garth Brooks.

“I think the next one is an accolade”: The Hollywood icon has a heart for being knighted by the Queen (Pictured: The Queen who knighted Alastair Cook in 2017)

The ceremony was originally scheduled for December 2020 but has been postponed to May due to the ongoing pandemic.

Dick, who told ABC News that the award was “the highlight of my career,” seemed overjoyed to be there with his fellow artists.

The Mary Poppins star sported an infectious smile with lots of laughter as he walked the red carpet in a classic black tuxedo.

Loving Wife: The actor on the red carpet was joined by his much younger wife, Arlene Silver, who looked elegant in a low-cut, sparkling silver dress that was tied around her waist

Even though he moved on the cane, he still looked energetic and sported the shaggy white beard he has worn for the past few years.

Dick’s red carpet appearance comes after being seen handing out bundles of money to those in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Beloved Mary Poppins star, who played chimney sweep Bert in the 1964 classic alongside Julie Andrews, gave back to his ward when he ran errands in Malibu in March.

The actor stopped by the Malibu Community Labor Exchange on Civic Center Way, a nonprofit that helps people find day jobs in the area.

Dick left a small group of job seekers stunned after parking in front of the facility and handing out bills from his car window to people waiting in line for employment.

The generosity came when millions of Americans struggled to make ends meet after losing their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dick himself is believed to be at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19 due to his older age, but appeared unwavering and in high spirits as he helped those in need.
